By: Terrill J. Weil Da Boot Sports! The Saints finish the 2019 regular season with a 42-10 blowout win over the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, NC. on Sunday. New Orleans scored 35 unanswered points in the first half of the contest, as they dominated the dismal Panthers, who have dropped their last 8 games to finish the season at 5-11. The Saints wasted no time putting away the Panthers, taking the ball to start the game and with ease went 75 yards in eight plays, ending with Alvin Kamara scoring on a 15 yard run. Both teams would trade punts over the next three possessions. With 7:22 left in the quarter, New Orleans kicked it back in gear. After driving 81 yards in 11 plays, Alvin Kamara would find the end zone again from a yard out to increase the Saints lead to 14-0 to end the quarter. The Saints' dominance continued through the second quarter. With 12:04 to go in the first half, Carolina had it first & ten at their own 14 yard line. AJ Klein would intercept a Will Grier pass and return it into the end zone. 21-0.. The Panthers would quickly go three & out, and punt. Brees would then drive the Saints 65 yards in 9 plays, throwing a one yard touchdown pass to Tre'Quan Smith. 28-0 with 6:27 to go. Carolina continued to struggle, going three & out again, giving the ball right back to Brees & company. Four plays later Jared Cook would haul in a 21 yard touchdown strike from #9. 35-0. Carolina would finally put points on the board, as Joey Slye kicked a 23 yard field goal, ending the first half with a 35-3 score. The second started slow, with both teams trading punts. Finally, at the 8:16 mark, the Saints would start a 8 play, 75 yard touchdown drive. The score came on third and seven from the Panthers' 45 yard line. Carolina would leave Taysom Hill wide open and Brees would find him for a 42-3 lead. Chistian McCaffrey would score on a one yard touchdown to end the third quarter with New Orleans up 42-10. Sean Payton would rest most of the Saints starters for the rest of the contest. Carolina would threaten to score once more late in the game, but Janoris Jenkins would intercept Kyle Allen's pass in the end zone to end the contest. Drew Brees finished the game, 19/30, 253 yards passing, three touchdowns. Alvin Kamara found the end zone twice, while Latavius Murray lead the team in rushing with 61 yards on 17 carries. Tre'Quan Smith was today's leading receiver with 56 yards on 5 grabs and a score. Defensively, AJ Klein had a big game against his former team, with 6 tackles, and returning a interception for a score. The defense collected three turnovers, two sacks, and held Carolina to only 41 yards on the ground. The Saints (13-3), now need to wait for the results of the Seattle vs. San Francisco game Sunday night to know their playoff seeding situation. If the 49ers win, the Saints will host Minnesota next week. A Seattle victory, would give the Saints the #2 seed and a first round bye. Either way, the New Orleans Saints are the team to watch in the NFC playoffs, as they enter the post season playing as well as anyone in the NFL. 12/22/2019
By: Terrill J. Weil Da Boot Sports! The Saints moved to 12-3, as they defeated the Tennessee Titans in Nashville today, 38-28. After struggling through the first quarter and finding themselves down 14-0, New Orleans would score 24 unanswered points in the second and third quarters, which was more than enough to seal the victory. Falling behind 14-0, the Saints put together a drive that started late in the first quarter continuing into the second, as they would go 41 yards in 13 plays. Wil Lutz pushed through a 47 yard field goal to finally get the Black & Gold on the scoreboard. Later in the half, New Orleans retained possession with 2:23 left and wasted no time. It took Drew Brees one play, as he hit Jared Cook deep for a 61 yard touchdown. The half would end with the Titans up 14-10. Drew Brees threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Alvin Kamara returned to form, as he carried the ball 11 times for 80 yards and scored twice. But the story of the day belongs to Michael Thomas, who needs to be considered the best at his position in the game today, as he has 12 catches for 136 yards and one touchdown. He now holds the record for most receptions in a single-season, as he broke Marvin Harrison's record of 143 receptions set in 1992. After giving up 14 points early in the game, the Saints defense played well. They sacked Ryan Tannehill five times and came up with perhaps the biggest play of the game. Leading 31-28 with 4:26 to go in the contest, the Saints failed on a fake punt attempt, giving the ball back to Tennessee in good field position. On the next play Tannehill hit Kalif Raymond down the middle for a 23 yard gain to the Saints 39. Raymond was hit hard and fumbled. CJ Gardner-Johnson scooped up the ball and returned it all the way to the Titans' 25 yard line. It was the only turnover of the game and a timely one for the Saints defense, as it set up the final score of the game with Brees hitting Thomas in the end zone. Next, the NFC South Champions travel to Charlotte to play the 5-10 Carolina Panthers in their regular season finale. 12/16/2019
By: Terrill J. Weil Da Boot Sports! Just another record-breaking night in The Big Easy. Drew Brees continues his assault on the NFL record books. Brees passed Peyton Manning to become the all-time leader in touchdown passes. He also set the record for the highest completion percentage in a game in NFL history,(96.7%). Brees continues to prove himself as one of the greatest and most accurate passers ever. The Saints were hitting on all cylinders as they totally dominated the Indianapolis Colts, 34-7 on Monday Night Football. New Orleans moved the ball at will and scored on their first six possessions. Thomas Morstead's services weren't needed until 12:28 to go in the game. After being embarrassed by the 49ers last week, the Saints defense held the Colts to only 205 total yards (159 passing, 46 rushing), and nearly pitched a shutout. Indianapolis never threatened to score all game long until they found the end zone on their final drive, late in the game. Drew Brees was an incredible, 29/30, 307 yds passing, 4 touchdowns. He came into tonight's game with 537 touchdowns, one TD pass behind Tom Brady (538), and two behind Manning's record of 539 on the all-time touchdown passing list. Touchdown pass number 538 came on the Saints second possession of the game, early in the second quarter. Leading 3-0, New Orleans drove 90 yards in 12 plays, eating 6:17 off of the clock, with Brees hitting Michael Thomas for a 15 yard touchdown. The Colts would go three and out and give the ball right back to Brees. This time the Saints had a 10 play drive, going 85 yards in 6:09. Tre'Quan Smith hauled in a 21 yard pass for touchdown number 539, pulling even with Peyton Manning. Once again, the New Orleans defense forced a Colts' punt. Only needing one more touchdown pass to break the record, Brees drove the Saints deep into Indianapolis territory. With only 14 seconds to go in the first half, Brees connected with Tre'Quan Smith for a five yard touchdown after scrambling to avoid a heavy pass rush. As the celebration began, no one noticed the yellow penalty flag laying on the turf. Smith was flagged for offensive pass interference, nullifying the record breaking scoring pass. The Saints settled for a Wil Lutz field goal and a 20-0 Halftime lead. The Saints received the second half kickoff and picked up right where they left off. Drew Brees orchestrated a 12 play, 75 yard drive, taking 7:52 off the clock and breaking Manning's record by hitting TE Josh Hill for a five yard touchdown. Brees was given the ball, as he removed his helmet, pointing, waving, and blowing kisses to the Who Dat Nation. He would add touchdown pass number 541 late in the 3rd quarter, connecting with Taysom Hill for a 28 yard score. Here is a list of the NFL records that Drew Brees owns::: Most career passing yards Most career pass completions Most career touchdown passes Highest career completion percentage Highest single-season completion percentage Most consecutive games with a touchdown pass Most pass completions in a season Most 5,000 yard passing seasons Highest completion percentage in a game Most touchdown passes in a game (tied) The Saints, (11-3) will travel to the Music City to take on the Tennessee Titans, (8-6) next Sunday at 12 noon. 12-16-19 By: Terrill J. By: Terrill J. Weil Da Boot Sports! There was only 2:19 left in the game. The Saints had it 1st & 10 at their own 24 yard line. The San Francisco 49ers had just scored to go ahead, 45-40. The 40 year old Drew Bress responded as he usually does when the game is on the line, driving the Saints down the field quickly and efficiently with short accurate passes. It took seven plays and only 1:30, as Brees and Tre'Quan Smith connected on a 18 yard touchdown, to finish off the 75 yard drive. Sean Peyton decided to go the two-point conversion, that failed, however New Orleans had regained the lead with 53 seconds left on the game clock. Saints fans were rocking the Dome and cheering for their team's defense to come up with a game winning stop, and it looked like it was going to happen as the 49ers faced a 4th & 2 at their own 33 yard line. Joe Garoppolo dropped back and hit George Kittle with a short pass to the left. Kittle turned up the sidelines, running over and dragging Saints defenders with him for a 39 yard gain to the Saints 28 yard line. Marcus Williams was flagged for a personal foul, as he grabbed and wouldn't let go of George Kittle's face mask while desperately trying to bring him down. The penalty placed the ball at the 14 yard line with 28 seconds left to play. With the Saints out of timeouts, San Francisco ran down the clock, stopping it with two seconds remaining. Robbie Gould's 30 yard field goal was good. giving the (11-2) San Francisco 49ers, a 48-46 victory. The win improves the 49ers' chances for a first round bye and home field advantage in the NFC playoffs. The Saints played well early, taking a 20-7 lead, as Drew Brees hit Jared Cook on touchdown passes of 38 & 26 yards. The second quarter started with a bang, as Brees added his third scoring toss on the first play of the quarter, connecting on a 3 yard touchdown pass to Josh Hill. On the very next play, Garoppolo found Emanuel Sanders deep on a 75 yard touchdown strike. Gould's PAT made the score 20-14, Saints. New Orleans would respond with a 12 play, 84 yard drive, eating up 7:14 off the clock. Drew Brees would cap off the drive with a QB Sneak from the one yard line on 4th down. 27-14, Saints. San Francisco however would dominate the rest of the first half as they continued to move the ball through the air. Garoppolo continued to have his way with the Saints defense, as the 49ers scored twice more before halftime. With 5:59 left, Emmanuel Sanders threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to a wide open Raheem Mostert on a trick play that fooled the Saints badly. After a three & out by New Orleans, the Niners drove 80 yards in 9 plays, scoring on a 10 yard TD run by Mostert, to go ahead at 28-27. The third quarter began with the Saints defense intercepting Garoppolo on the third play of the half. However, New Orleans could only manage a field goal out of the opportunity, but re-took the lead, 30-27. The Saints would get the ball right back, forcing the Niners to go three and out. On the first snap of the possession, Alvin Kamara fumbled and DeForest Buckner recovered the ball for San Fran at the Saints 20. Garoppolo wasted no time, hitting George Kittle for a 5 yard touchdown two plays later. 35-30, 49ers with 9:40 to go in the 3rd quarter. The Saints responded, with a nice 10 play drive that ended with a Wil Lutz field goal, ending the scoring in the quarter. The Niners began the 4th quarter with a 14 play scoring drive that ate up 6:57 off the clock. On 2nd & goal from the Saints six yard line, Jimmy Garoppolo connected with Kendrick Bourne in the end zone. 42-33, Niners with 8:59 to go in the game. The scoring track meet continued as the Saints answered quickly to pull within two points as Brees completed a 21 yard touchdown pass to Michael Thomas. Robbie Gould would kick a 41 yard field goal with 2:23 left to increase the Niner's lead to 45-40, and set up the explosive ending. The Saints defense which stood tall over the last two weeks with late game heroics to preserve victories, was simply over-matched by the 49ers offensive attack. Jimmy Garoppolo out played Drew Brees and finished with 26/35, 349 yards passing & four touchdowns. The heartbreaking defeat puts New Orleans at 10-3, and drops them to the #3 seed behind Green Bay. Next for the Saints is a Monday Night Football match up with the Indianapolis Colts in the Mercedes Benz Super Dome. |
