Da Boot Sports 12/1/2024 By: David Penn NEW ORLEANS, LA - Darren Rizzi suffered his first loss as the interim coach of the New Orleans Saints as the Saints fell to 4-8, the Los Angeles Rams meanwhile improved to 6-6. The Saints defense was nearly masterful during the first half of the game, keeping the Rams off the scoreboard for the first time since Sean McVay became the coach of the Rams. The Saints offense certainly missed on a couple opportunities, but did head into halftime with a 6-0 lead. One moment of controversy occurred early in the game, Derek Carr sent a long pass down the sideline and it appeared that the Rams Quentin Lake interfered with Juwan Johnson’s ability to catch the pass, and even with an official mere feet away from the play, no flag was thrown. The Saints would fake a punt and get a pass interference call a couple plays later, but the difference in yardage from the original no call was significant. Blake Grupe would miss a FG attempt on that possession, only Grupe’s second miss of the season so far. “We did a lot of things in the game that we set out to do and played the game in a lot of ways that we wanted to, but we didn’t execute in crunch time," Rizzi said. “We had a chance to win there. We had a guy open in the end zone and we can’t get the ball off. So, unfortunate.” Taysom Hill again proved how dynamic the Saints offense can be when he is lining up at various positions for the Saints’ offense as the Saints were most effective when Hill was a part of the formation. The bad break for the Saints came late in the fourth quarter when the Saints were driving for a game tying score and Hill was injured after picking up a first down in the red zone. The Saints were unable to convert on their final possession and turned the ball over on downs with less than a minute to play. The Saints defense was not nearly as effective in the second half. The Rams were able to score three touchdowns and averaged nearly 5.5 yards per carry rushing the ball. The Rams receivers were able to get past the man coverage that had held them in check in the three drives the Rams had in the first half. The Rams opened the second half with possession and scored their first TD. The Rams would score their second TD at the beginning of the fourth quarter and lead 14-6. The Saints responded with a 6 play 70 yard drive that ended with a deep ball from Carr to Marquez Valdez-Scantling, a 42 yard hook up that the Saints would follow up with a successful 2 point conversion with Dante Pettis hauling in the pass over the back of the defender and tying the game at 14-14. The ensuing kickoff was returned 43 yards by the Rams return specialist Jordan Whittington and the Rams were back in business. The Rams marched 54 yards in 8 plays and found the end zone when Matt Stafford swung a pass out to Puka Nacua for a 7 yard score, regaining the lead 21-14 for the final margin.
