Da Boot Sports 10/13/2024 By: David Penn NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2) beat the New Orleans Saints (2-4), 51-27 despite being displaced by Hurricane Milton and having their normal routine disrupted by Mother Nature. Injuries and mistakes continue to be a recurring theme for the Black and Gold and plagued the Saints again on Sunday. The Bucs took the opening drive the distance to take an early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing Saints possession Chris Olave fumbled a reception and the Bucs returned it for another touchdown to go up 14-0 only six and a half minutes into the game. The Saints started the second quarter trailing 17-0 but a frenetic 8 minutes of gameplay saw Rashid Shaeed return a punt for a touchdown, the defense forced a turnover, and the offense was able to punch it into the end zone. Before anyone could blink, the Saints were leading 27-24 following a 7 play 70 yard drive. The Saints would not score again the rest of the game, while the Buccaneers were able to take advantage of an interception, and poor tackling when the Saints defense was on the field, scoring 27 points in the second half. Spencer Rattler, the rookie QB’s first start, had some positive moments but looked very much like a rookie at other times. Rattler finished the game 22 of 40 for 243 yards, a TD, 25 yards rushing, and two INTs. On the play that Olave fumbled, he left the game for concussion protocol and did not return. The list of offensive inactives seems to grow each week. The Saints were already without Caesar Ruiz, Erik McCoy, Taysom Hill, and Derek Carr. “There were some encouraging things, some things that he’s going to learn from,” Allen said, noting that New Orleans' difficulty running the ball and defensive lapses in the second half made Rattler's job harder as the game wore on. “I don’t think we did enough around him to help him.” The normally steady defense gave up an uncharacteristically large number of plays and Baker Mayfield did a good job of extending plays with his feet and creating opportunities for his receivers. The Saints defense gave up at least seven plays where the Tampa Bay offense gained more than 20 yards. It’s not often that a defense creates three turnovers comes out on the wrong end of the scoreboard, but the Saints gave up 594 yards of offense, 277 of which were gained on the ground. It’s a short turn around for the Saints as they will host Sean Payton and the Broncos in the Super Dome on Thursday night. It will be the first time Payton will coach in New Orleans as the opposing coach. The Broncos will arrive at 3-3 with Bo Nix, their own rookie QB under center.
