Da Boot Sports 11/10/2024 By: David Penn NEW ORLEANS, LA - If you were curious about the tank vs win strategy the Saints (3-7) may employ after letting go of head coach Dennis Allen and trading all-pro corner Marshon Lattimore, answer received. In his debut as the interim head coach, Darren Rizzi displayed emotion and passion that many opinioned was missing under Dennis Allen and the Saints snapped a seven game losing streak against the division leading Falcons (6-4). In the first half, Derek Carr flashed the deep ball that’s been missing in the absence of WR Rashid Shaheed with recently acquired WR Marquez Valdez Scantling, who hauled in three receptions for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Valdez Scantling scored on a 40 yard reception, and his 67 yard reception set up his second receiving touchdown which allowed the Saints to enter halftime with a 17-7 lead over the visitors. Alvin Kamara became the Saints all-time leading rusher, passing former teammate Mark Ingram for the honor. Kamara carried 17 times for 55 yards and caught 5 passes for another 54 yards. The defense showed up and played inspired football against a Falcons offense that has scored an average of 25 points over their last 6 contests. The Saints didn’t pressure Kirk Cousins much throughout the contest, but the pressure arrived during the most pivotal moments of the fourth quarter when Cam Jordan registered his first sack of the season and two plays later Younghoe Koo would miss his third field goal attempt of the game, leaving the score 20-17 in favor of the Saints. On the Falcons’ next possession, an errant throw by Cousins would end up in the hands of Tyrann Mathieu with just under two minutes left on the game clock, but the Saints would only manage to possess the ball for 24 seconds before punting the ball back to Atlanta with 1:35 left. Chase Young would sack Cousins for a nine yard loss and force a fumble that was recovered by the Falcons, which made it 2nd and 29 with about :34 seconds to play. Cousins would hit TE Kyle Pitts on the sideline to stop the clock with :28 seconds remaining for 7 yards, setting up 3rd and 22. Cousins then completed another pass to Pitts, this time in the middle of the field and with zero timeouts remaining the clock running with a down and distance of 4th and 4. Cousins would get the snap off with 6 seconds remaining, swinging the ball short left to Ray-Ray McCloud who was tackled inbounds as the clock struck zero. Each team missed several opportunities to increase their own point totals, the Saints elected to go for it on 4th and goal in the first quarter rather than kicking a field goal, the 4th down conversion failed. Koo, who was almost automatic in the first meeting between the two teams, missed three field goal attempts during the contest. Kamara uncharacteristically dropped a wide open pass late in the fourth quarter that would have seen him walk into the end zone as he was several yards behind the coverage when the ball went through his hands. In all, the Saints and interim coach Darren Rizzi are happy to leave the Caesar's Superdome with their first win in nearly two months. The Saints will begin preparation for the visiting Cleveland Browns (2-7) who are facing struggles of their own. All eyes will be on Rizzi and the Saints to see how the team follows up his head coaching debut. **Make sure you go to DaBootSports.com for all of your LSU, Saints and Southern University coverage all season long.
