Da Boot Sports 7/2/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil Craig "IronHead" Heyward was drafted by the Saints in the 1st round of the 1988 NFL Draft. Heyward, at 5'11" and 330 lbs was a punishing running, a devastating blocker and hand great hands out of the backfield. He also displayed surprising quickness and agility. He played in New Orleans from 1988 to 1992 and was a fixture in the Saints' backfield, finishing with 1,813 yards on 432 carries and 13 touchdowns. Heyward would go on to play for Chicago in 1993 before landing in Atlanta from 1994-1996. In 1995 he rushed for 1,083 yards and six touchdowns for the Falcons. No other fullback has rushed for over 1,000 yards since. He played in St. Louis in 1997 and in Indianapolis in 1998. In November of 1998 he was diagnosed with malignant bone cancer at the base of his skull which ended his playing career before passing away on May 27, 2006 of an inoperable brain tumor.
