Strong Defensive Performance Lifts Jaguars Over Grambling In The 51st Bayou Classic

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- The collegiate state championship was on the line for Southern and Grambling State in the 51st Bayou Classic on Saturday afternoon, where Southerns' Dog Day D held the Tigers to under fifty yards rushing and under 100 yards passing to win their third Bayou Classic to take home the bragging rights for another 365 days. Final score form the Ceasars Superdome was 24-14. The Jaguars found success for the fourth straight week on the ground led by senior running back Kendric Rhymes with 110 yards including a 45-yard touchdown to seal the deal with 3:31 left the contest. Kobe Dillon finished the day with 81 yards off 12 carries. Jalen Woods finished the day with a solid performance throwing for 188 yards off 9-of-17 passing including a 45-yard touchdown to the 51st Bayou Classic MVPChandler Whitfield. Whitfield finished the day with a season-high 146-yards off five receptions and a TD.
The Dog Day Defense held the Tigers offense to only 148-yards of total offense, 99 through the air and 49 on the ground. Junior linebacker Vincent Paige Jr. led the Jags with nine tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss. Darrius Harry and Darrius Harry and Davin Cotton finished the day with seven tackles each. Seniors Horacio Johnson and Derrick Williams added another five tackles each and a combined 2.5 tackles for loss.

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Southerns' offense clicked on all cylinders on Saturday afternoon as they dominate Arkansas Pine Bluff in a 31-9 lopsided victory to clinch the western division title and punch their ticket to the 2024 SWAC Championship game against Jackson State on December 7th. "Saturday's performance was the game I've been looking for from his team all season," said Terrence Graves. "The kids are excited, and they should be. This is the time you get excited."
"It feels great. This is my second western division title since I've been here but this one is my favorite by far," said running back Kendric Rhymes. "It was fun to go out on senior day with my brothers."
The Jaguars found success on the ground by committee led by senior running back CJ Russell with 66 yards off 12 carries, senior running back Kendric Rhymes added another 65 yards including a 14 yard touchdown run and Kobe Dillon with 64 yards including a 6 yard TD run to pick up his first rushing touchdown this season. The Jaguars had the third different quarterback start this season in Jalen Woods where he finished the day 14-of-22 passing for 202 yards including the 71-yard TD toss to red-shirt freshman receiver Cam Jefferson. Woods tossed the ball around to eight different recievers on the day led by freshaman receiver Kobe Brown with three huge receptions.

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Southerns' offense was stagnant for three quarters until Jalen Woods throw 18 yard dart to Chandler Whitfield to give the Jaguars their first touchdown on the day. Final score from A. W. Mumford Stadium was 25-23 in five overtimes. The Jaguars found success on the ground on the day led by Kobe Dillon with 130 yards off 19 carries and senior running back Kendric Rhymes added another 92 yards including a 25 yard touchdown run in the second overtime. The Jaguars quarterbacks finished the day 13-of-28 passing for 164 yards. Czavian Teasett finished with 111 yards and Woods finished with 53 yards. In his first game back Whitfield led the team in receiving with 29 yards including a 18 yards touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars defense played with the bend but don't break mentality for sixty minutes plus five overtimes led by junior linebacker Vincent Paige Jr. with eleven tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Senior safety Horacio Johnson added another nine tackles along with .5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups.Derrick Williams added six more tackles and a tackle for loss.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Southerns' Czavian Teasett led the Jaguars 75-yards to seal the ball game late in the fourth quarter to remain top of the SWAC west division after knocking off Alabama A&M 25-20. The Jaguars emerging star quarterback threw for a conference-high 294 yards on the day completing passes to nine different receivers and three TD passes on the day. Kobe Dillon led the Jaguars rushing attack for the second straight game with 89 yards off 19 carries. Teasett added 59 more yards off six carries. Darren Morris led the Jaguars receiving corp with 96 yards off five receptions and two touchdowns. Senior tight end Dupree Fuller finished the day with 70 yards off four receptions including the one-hand grab for the win on the final drive of the game for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars defense played hard all day causing problems for the Bulldogs offense making the uncomfortable all game led by Herman Brister III and Vincent Paige Jr. with ten tackles each, Brister III grabbed his first interception of the season and a tackle for 7-yard loss. Horacio Johnson added eight more tackles along with two pass breakups and Derrick Williams added six more tackles and a tackle for loss.

BATON ROUGE, LA -- For the second straight week the Jaguars put together the winning combination in the second half to be successful and remain undefeated in conference play after knocking off Alcorn on Saturday night. Final from Homecoming 2024 was 24-14.
"When you play in big games like this, you have to make plays," said Vincent Paige. "We were helping the offense and putting them in position to score points."
The Jaguars QB, Noah Bodden went 13-out of-22 passing for 141 yards and one touchdown pass and another on the ground, along with completing passes to seven different receivers. He finished the night with 38 yards on the ground. The Jaguars came out determined to run the ball picking up 295 yards on the ground led by senior running back Kendric Rhymes with 133 yards off 17 carries. Kobe Dillon added another 91 yards on the ground off 15 carries. Datraveon Brown led the Jags with 59 recieving yards off three receptions and 37-yard touchdown from Bodden. Cam Jefferson finished the night with 33 receiving yards off three catches.
The Jaguars defense showed why the Jaguar Nation call them the Dog day D by making play-after-play all game to put the Jaguars in the best positions to be successful led by junior linebacker Vincent Paige Jr. with a game-high 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.0 tackles for loss. Rodney Johnson Jr. finished the night with nine tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and a force fumble. Elijah West added seven more tackles and two pass break-ups. Redshirt freshman Herman Brister III added another five solo tackles, along with his second straight game with a fumble recovery.

Southern Remains Undefeated In Conference Play After Knocking Off Texas Southern In Overtime

HOUSTON, TX -- It was a tale of two halves, where the Jaguars got off to their usual slow start in the first half but came out smoking in the second half to force the game into overtime off a 16-yard pass to Quay Davis. Final score from Baton Rouge, Tx was 22-19 in overtime.
"It's not magic, it's just those guys are resilient", said Terrence Graves. "I talk about it all the time, this team has the heart of a champion. It may not always look the best or prettiest, but this team won't quit."
The Jaguars QB, Noah Bodden went 13-out of-32 passing for 181 yards and two touchdowns, completing passes to seven different receivers. He finished the night with 34 yards on the ground. The Jaguars struggled in the first half running the ball, but came out in the second half determined to put the ball in the end zone led by CJ Russell (56), Kobe Dillon (53) and Kendric Rhymes (37 and a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter) picking up 146 of the Jaguars 194 rushing yards. Cam Jefferson and Rhymes led the team with 37 receiving yards each.
The Jaguars defense showed determination all game, making play-after-play all game to put the Jaguars in the best positions to be successful led by junior linebacker Vincent Paige Jr. with a game-high 11 tackles, a force fumble and pass breakup. BATON ROUGE, LA -- The Jaguars got off to a slow start and was never able to recover falling to Nicholls 51-7 on Saturday night.
The Jaguars QB combination went 17-out of-37 for 191on the night , junior Noah Bodden was 7-out of-20 passing for 98 yards and two two interceptions and sophomore Jalen Woods was 10-out of- 17 passing with one TD toss to Jason Gabriel. The Jaguars struggled running the ball for the third time this season with thirty-two yards rushing on the night with an average of 1.3 yards a carry. Junior receiver Darren Morris led the Jaguars in receiving with 47 yards off four receptions.
The Jaguars defense showed determination all game but lived on the field most of the game led by Vincent Piage Jr. with nine tackles and one tackle for loss. In his first back Horacio Johnson finished the night with seven tackles and Herman Brister III added six tackles along with three pass breakups.

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- The Jaguars got off to a slow start in the first half, but came out in the second half a complete different team to go 1-0 in conference play by knocking off Prairie View in overtime. Final score from AW Mumford West (Panther Stadium) was 31-24.
"That's what we're built on, going good to great," said linebacker Derrick Williams, "Bend don't break. When all our backs are against the wall, we're going to come out swinging. "The guys fought and played hard, I told them at halftime we've got 30 minutes to play and it was up to them to decide what we are going to do and how we're going to be remembered, said Terrence Graves". The Jaguars QB, Noah Bodden went 16-out of-29 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns, completing 55% of his passes on the night completing passes to nine different receivers. The Jaguars struggled in the first half running the ball, but came out in the second half determined to pu the ball in the end zone led by Kobe dILLON (82), Kendric Rymes (59) and CJ Russell (45) picking up 186 of the Jaguars 209 rushing yards. The Jaguars defense showed determination all game, making play by play all game to put the Jaguars in the best positions to be successful led by redshirt freshman Herman Brister III with 11 tackles and a tackle for loss. Linebacker Jamarlo Campbell finished the night with nine tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss, while Joshua Tate added eight tackles and a tackle for a two-yard loss. Jelani Davis and Derrick Williams finished the night with seven tackles each. Davis added three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks for 14-yards loss.

JACKSON, MS - The Jaguars (1-1) traveled to Mississippi to take on Jackson State (1-1). Southern dropped a tough one to an explosive Jackson State team, 33-15.
Noah Bodden played well after replacing an injured Czavian Teasett, going 17-29 for 352 yards with 1 touchdown and two interceptions. The running game sputtered all night long as the Jags only managed 29 yards rushing on 21 carries with one rushing score. Chandler Whitfield led the team in receiving with 85 yards on six catches. Darren Morris had five grabs for 86 yards. Quay Davis added 62 yards on four catches. Horacio Johnson led the Jags on defense with 14 tackles.
Jackson State took the opening kickoff and drove 58 yards in eight plays, having to settle for a 25 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 12:35 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers extended the lead on their next possession, driving 72 yards in 11 plays, culminating with a 1 yard touchdown run by JD Martin. 10-0 JSU, with 3:30 left in the opening quarter.
Jackson State continued to poor it on the Southern defense, driving 59 yards in only five plays, scoring on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Jacobian Morgan to Marvin Landry. 16-0 Tigers as the PAT was missed, with 14:48 left in the second quarter.
The Tigers added to their lead when running back Ahmad Miller took a toss and raced 30 yards for the score. The PAT was good, putting Jackson State up, 23-0 with 2:49 left in the first half.
Southern finally got on the score board late in the second quarter, driving 63 yards in nine plays. Joshua Griffen hit a 29 yard field goal to help cut the Jackson State lead to 23-3 at halftime.
The Jaguars offense struggled throughout the first half until the final drive of the second quarter. They only managed 14 yards rushing in the first 30 minutes and 111 total yards.
Southern opened the second half with a nice drive until Noah Bodden threw an interception to kill the scoring threat.
Jackson State took advantage of the turnover, as Gerardo Baeza hit a 39 yard field goal to extend the Tigers lead to 26-3 at the 9:21 mark in the 3rd quarter.
The Jags responded, driving 75 yards on six plays for a touchdown. Kendric Rhymes powered into the end zone from three yards out. The two point conversion failed, bringing the score to 26-9, Tigers.
Jackson State answered the Southern score, as Irv Mulligan scored on a five yard touchdown run to cap off a 7 play, 66 yard drive. With 2:23 left in the 3rd quarter, the Tigers increased their advantage to, 33-9.
Southern continued to fight back with an impressive 97 yard touchdown drive. Noah Bodden hit Jermaine Minor Jr. for a 16 yard touchdown. The 2 point conversion failed, but the Jags cut the Tigers lead to, 33-15 with 7:31 left in the game.
With the loss, Southern falls to 1-2 on the season.
Next up, the Jaguars will travel to Prairie View, Texas to play Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Spetember 21 in their first conference game of the season.

Southern Dominates Savannah State To Pick Up Their First Win Of The Season

BATON ROUGE, LA -- The Jaguars took control of the ball game after Czavian Teasett hit Chandler Whitfield down the left side of the field to give the Jaguars first touchdown of the day. Final score from A. W. Mumford Stadium was 42-10.
"You have to try to give your team a spark so we put Teasett in, let him go and we got on track offensively, said Terrence Graves"
Jaguars backup QB came in the game midway the second quarter to give the Jags a much needed spark and never looked back throwing a career-high 316 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back, Kendric Rhymes found the endzone off a four-yard run to cap off a nine play fifty-eight yard drive in the third quarter. Kobe Dillion led SU in rushing for the second straight week with 52 yards off 13 carries,, while the Jaguar receivers led the team in receiving with 247-yards combined of the 363 total passing yards thrown by Czavian Teasett and Noah Bodden. Dupree Fuller finished the night with three catches for 54 yards with a 31-yard TD catch from Teasett and Jermaine Minor Jr. added another 62 yards off four receptions.
The Jaguars defense proved once again that they are made for the big moments led by nickel back Elijah West with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakuop. Junior defensive end Darrius Harry finished the night with 4 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. Southern's defensive backs disrupted Savannah State's offense all night led by redshirt freshman safety, Herman Brister III with three tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GAME The Dog Day D held the Tigers to one first down and only 65 yards of total offense.

Southern Drops A Heartbreaker At McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. -- The Jaguars controlled the tempo of the game for 50 minutes before special teams woes gave McNeese the edge to take out the Jags 21-7 in front of 16,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium.
"It was tough, to play almost mistake free for three quarters and to have that happen," said Terrence Graves. "I've seen it before and it's never a good feeling. But we've got something to watch on film and improve on."
Freshman Barry Remo scored his first collegiate touchdown as a Jaguar in the second quarter on a one-yard run. The Jaguars QB, Noah Bodden showed some bright spots by getting out the pocket to avoid the defenders and finding open receivers to keep the drive going.
Kobe Dillon led SU in rushing with 52 yards off 14 carries,, while the tight ends led the team in receiving with 73-yards combined of the 132 total passing yards thrown by Bodden. Dupree Fuller finished the night with four catches for 36 yards and Jermaine Minor Jr. added another 37 yards off two receptions.
The Jaguars defense proved once again that they are made for the big moments led by safety Jamarius Brown with seven tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. Junior All American Ckelby Givens picked right back where he left off last season, finishing the night with 6 tackles and one tackle for loss. Southern's big men in the middle, disrupted McNeese offense all night led by senior defensive tackle, Willie Miles with five tackles and three QB hurries.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GAME One of the biggest highlights of the game was the Jaguars offensive line did not give up a sack on the night.

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University football team will officially open fall camp Friday night at A.W. Mumford Stadium and Pete Richardson Field. Southern will look to improve on last season's 6-5 overall record and 5-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). All practices – minus the Fan Day scrimmage – will be closed to the public. The Jaguars will practice Monday-Saturday at in the evening through Aug. 18 as part of fall camp, before moving to afternoon practices at the start of the fall semester Aug. 19. SU was picked to finish fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division preseason poll. Southern will see an influx of talented newcomers to bolster a solid corps of returners in all three phases. Southern Picked To Finish Fourth In The SWAC Western Division

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2024 Preseason Predicted Order of Finish on Tuesday during the league's media day. The predicted order of finish were voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
The Southern University Jaguars were picked to finish fourth in the SWAC Western Division. Southern will kick off their season August 31st, on the road against McNeese State University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cowboy Stadium and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
