NEW ORLEANS – Edna Karr hadn’t played in a state championship game since 2020. That’s a pretty brief absence from the LHSAA Prep Classic for just about anyone except Karr, which appeared in 10 finals in 11 seasons from 2010-2020, including consecutive titles from 2016-19 and a runner-up finish in 2020 in Natchitoches . The No. 1 seed Cougars looked like a team that couldn’t wait to make the most of its return to the championship, scoring three touchdowns in the first 5½ minutes on its way to a resounding 53-8 victory over No. 2 seed Alexandria in the Division I Select Championship Game on Saturday afternoon. “Our team motto this season was reclaim,” head coach Brice Brown said. “We were trying to reclaim the sense of our identity, not just reclaim a state championship, but reclaim a sense of: we are the best team in the state of Louisiana, we are the best high school in the state of Louisiana, we have the best character, we have the best students. “We talked about it Tuesday at practice. We expected a running clock in the state championship.” LHSAA rules call for the automatic implementation of a running clock in a championship game when a team leads by 42 points or more. The Cougars (14-0) reached the threshold with 10:42 remaining on the way to their seventh state title. “I don’t want that to sound arrogant or cocky, but that’s the expectation,’ Brown said of the running-clock goal. “That had nothing to do with Alexandria. It had everything to do with us.” John Johnson rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 197 yards and two touchdowns to more than offset his four first-half interceptions, all of which came after the Cougars had raced to their three-touchdown lead. Johnson was voted his team’s “outstanding player,” though he rated his performance as “a six out of ten.” He received plenty of help as Bryant Sanchez rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown and the defense contributed a touchdown and two safeties while containing LSU signee J.T. Lindsey to 115 yards on 22 carries. Brown called Lindsey, who rushed 29 times for 179 yards and two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass in a quarterfinal loss to Karr last season, “the fuel that makes the car run.” Lindsey entered the game having accumulated 2,609 yards from scrimmage and having scored 29 touchdowns. “We said we can’t let their best player beat us,” Brown said. Brown said during the week that every championship “tastes different.” This one is Karr’s first since moving up to Louisiana’s highest classification and joining ultra-competitive District 9-5A, which Brown said is “like the SEC of high school football.” The Trojans (13-1), who won the comparably competitive District 2-5A, were making their first appearance in the Superdome and second in a title game, having lost to Acadiana 35-34 in 2020 in Natchitoches. “The goal isn’t to get here,” Alexandria head coach Thomas Bachman said. “We played a lot of championship-caliber programs. Until tonight we met every challenge. “(Karr) is a great collection of talent that is well coached and disciplined.” On Karr’s first possession of the second half it drove 76 yards on nine rushes and Sanchez ran one yard for a touchdown. Its second possession consisted of two pass plays – Johnson completions of 46 yards to Daejawn Smith and 22 yards to Taron Francis for a touchdown and a 46-8 lead that lasted into the fourth quarter. Johnson scrambled 18 yards for a touchdown that concluded the scoring and sped up the clock. On the second play from scrimmage Karr’s Aiden Hall returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown and on the Cougars’ first offensive play Johnson threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Francis. On Karr’s second possession it drove 58 yards, the last five of which came on Johnson’s five-yard touchdown run, producing the 21-0 lead that held up through the end of the first quarter. Even when Karr made a mistake it turned into something positive. On the Cougars’ fourth play of the second quarter Johnson’s pass was intercepted by Jaden Lewis at the Trojans’ 3, but on the next play Richard Anderson tackled Lindsey in the end zone for a safety. Alexandria’s next offensive play also resulted in a safety as Lyric Hawkins sacked Karsen Sellers in the end zone for a 25-0 lead. Johnson’s 47-yard pass to Oliver Mitchell set up Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown run before Max Gassiot’s five-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion pass to Alex Fontenot produced Alexandria’s only points. Brown said some people have a “perception” that because Karr is a pubic school, “we have players from Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi.” “But these guys are home grown from New Orleans, Louisiana,” he said. “They weathered the storm of every naysayer who thinks you’re one thing, but you’re really showing each and every one of them that you’re something else – that you’re a student-athlete, a great person, an excellent player and a phenomenal kid. “You’re reclaiming a sense of purpose, a sense of identity that a school that is predominantly African-American can be disciplined, can do their job on a consistent basis. That’s what we were trying to reclaim and I think we did it.”

NEW ORLEANS – The inevitable happened for Central Baton Rouge in an emphatic way on Saturday.Playing in its first state championship football game in 58 years, the Wildcats ended a title drought that lasted generations, spanned numerous presidents, and saw man land on the moon multiple times. Central defeated Ruston 42-0 in the Division I non-select state championship, securing its first state title since 1966. Central (12-1) held Ruston, the defending state champions, to just 90 yards, setting a new LHSAA Prep Classic record. “I think there was a lot of talk about us getting bullied (on defense), and our guys took that to heart,” Central coach David Simoneaux said. The win for Central (12-1) capped a day of two blowout games on the final day of the LHSAA Football Prep Classic. In the first game of the day, Karr defeated Alexandria 53-8 to win the Division I select state championship. Central quarterback Jason Firmin, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior who signed with Nicholls State, completed 17 of 28 passes for 233 yards and five touchdowns. Central outgained Ruston 317-90. Ruston quarterback Joshua Brantley, who signed with Tulane, rushed for 51 yards and completed 3 of 14 passes for 30 yards with two interceptions. “I’m just so proud of our whole town, administration, our kids, and our coaching staff,” Simoneaux said. Ruston, making its third consecutive state championship game appearance, finished the season with an 11-3 record. “For whatever reason, I just didn’t get our guys ready to play,” Ruston coach Jerrod Baugh said. Central made history by dominating the first half. The Wildcats scored on their second offensive play of the game when quarterback Jackson Firmin threw a 59-yard touchdown to receiver Keithon Womack, who ran behind the Ruston defense on a post pattern. Central increased its lead to 14-0 two plays later when defensive lineman Dakavius Mays picked up a fumble from quarterback Joshua Brantley and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats extended their lead to 21-0 in the first quarter with a 15-play, 69-yard touchdown drive that lasted 9 minutes and 24 seconds. The possession included two fourth-down conversions (one run and one pass) and five defensive penalties by Ruston. Firmin capped the drive when he rolled left and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kylen Thomas with 4:34 left in the first half. Firmin threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Steven Ranel to make the score 28-0 with 3:26 remaining and finished the first-half scoring with a 14-yard scoring toss to Tyrann Williams, making the score 35-0. The final touchdown pass for Firman came when he connected with Womack for a 15-yard touchdown with 7:53 left in the game.

NEW ORLEANS – Archbishop Shaw can call itself a football state champion for the first time since 1987. The Eagles emerged victorious in the Division II Select championship after defeating E.D. White 28-25 in the 2024 LHSAA Prep Classic on Friday at the Caesars Superdome. Shaw entered this game riding a 10-game winning streak after starting 1-2 this season, while E.D. White came in at 12-2, seeking its first state championship since 1969. E.D. White started off strong, securing the game’s first score with 4:12 left in the opening quarter after a one-yard rush by junior quarterback Grant Barbera. Shaw responded midway through the second quarter as quarterback Mason Wilson found open space to run in a 21-yard touchdown, tying the score with the extra point at 7-7. On the next drive, the Cardinals took the lead back after running back Carter Douglas rushed for a two-yard touchdown, making the score 14-7 with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter. With seven seconds left in the half, the Eagles tied the game at 14 after Wilson found wide receiver Jacob Washington for a 36-yard score. A scoreless third quarter gave way to the fourth quarter, and things got chaotic fast. With 9:22 remaining, E.D. White kicker Ty Powell knocked in a 27-yard field goal to give the Cardinals a 17-14 lead. Two plays later, Michigan commit Jasper Parker took off for a 62-yard run, scoring a Shaw touchdown with 8:59 left, giving them a 21-17 lead. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Barbera fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Shaw’s Tahj Turner at the E.D. White 13-yard line. Three plays later, Shaw found the end zone again with 7:29 left when Wilson threw to Washington for 10 yards and another seven points, giving the Eagles an 11-point advantage. However, E.D. White was not fully done just yet, as Jonathan Lee found the end zone on a 4-yard run, with Ben Guidry rushing in to convert the two-point attempt, narrowing the Cardinals’ deficit to three with 3:53 remaining. Shaw would hold the ball and run the clock out to secure their long-awaited state title, not giving E.D. White a chance for a comeback. Shaw head coach Hank Tierney said that during practice yesterday, the team role-played the trophy presentation in hopes of motivating them even more. “We presented the 1987 state championship trophy in two pieces because it’s that old,” Tierney said. “Just like it would go, and did go, after the game.” Tierney said he couldn’t be happier for his group of guys to etch their names into Shaw history. “I’m just so thrilled for these guys, this school, and this community,” Tierney said. E.D. White head coach Kyle Lasseigne said he was extremely proud of his team for getting to the championship game. “There were a lot of things we did right this season,” Lasseigne said. “But today wasn’t one of those things.” Lasseigne said he hopes his team will be back in the championship soon, with a different outcome when they do. “We’re gonna win one of these one day,” Lasseigne said. “If we keep getting back here, we’ll eventually hoist that trophy.”

Catholic-New Iberia holds off Dunham’s furious 4th quarter rally to win Division III Select title

NEW ORLEANS – After back-to-back upsets on the road over No. 2 Newman and No. 3 Calvary Baptist, No. 7 Catholic-New Iberia survived No. 1 Dunham’s late push to pull off its third straight upset victory in a 31-28 thriller. After Catholic-New Iberia (13-1) led 31-14 with 8:47 left to play in the third quarter, Dunham (13-1) scored 14 unanswered points, cutting the deficit to just three points with under four minutes to go in the game. After Dunham forced a three-and-out, the Tigers blocked the punt, and linebacker Joshua Lazard picked it up, eventually being tackled on Catholic-New Iberia’s 8-yard line. However, Dunham failed to score on the first three plays. To play it safe, the Tgiers could have attempted a chip-shot field goal from the 3-yard line to send the game into overtime. However, they decided to take a huge risk and go for the touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Elijah Haven tried to find wide receiver Jarvis Washington in the end zone, but the pass was intercepted by Panthers sophomore defensive back Karon Eugene to seal the win. “They said go make a play, and we went out there and made a play, then celebrated with the team,” Eugene said of his game-winning interception. On Dunham’s first drive of the game, the Tigers drove 76 yards down the field on 11 plays, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown run by Haven to take an early 7-0 lead. After Catholic-New Iberia kicked a field goal to cut into Dunham’s lead, the Tigers responded with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Haven to Washington to extend the lead to 14-3 with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Washington finished with 10 catches for 151 yards. Catholic-New Iberia responded with an 8-play, 49-yard drive that ended in a 14-yard touchdown run by Tristan Lewis. Catholic-New Iberia then took the lead on its next drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Landry to Bennett Woodring. The touchdown was set up by a 34-yard pass from Landry to Mitchell. The visitors extended their lead with a 2-yard touchdown run by J.D. Hidalgo, making it 24-14 with 36 seconds left in the first half. However, the first half ended with controversy. Haven threw a Hail Mary pass caught by Washington and ruled incomplete. Despite the replay showing that Washington had one foot in bounds, the referees upheld the original call after review. “There was no explanation,” Dunham head coach Neil Weiner said regarding the officials’ decision. “They ruled him out. His foot was in bounds. The official signaled that he was out of bounds, that his foot was not in. Everyone in the Superdome could see that his foot was in bounds. If it was about the catch, that’s fine, but that’s not what was called on the field, and I thought that was the purpose of the replay—to confirm the call on the field.” Catholic-New Iberia kept scoring at the start of the second half as Landry found Joseph LeBlanc for a 6-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 31-14 with 8:14 left in the third quarter. However, Dunham began to rally. Haven led a 13-play, 71-yard scoring drive, completing it with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10 points. Dunham then surprised Catholic-New Iberia with an onside kick that defensive back Grant Montgomery recovered. The Tigers drove to Catholic-New Iberia’s 1-yard line but committed a false start penalty. Woodring then stripped the ball from Dunham’s Trevor Haman and recovered it to force the turnover. After forcing Catholic-New Iberia to a three-and-out, Dunham struck seconds later as Haven found Haman for a 42-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to three points. Haman finished with 11 catches for 122 yards. With things already getting crazy, Dunham forced another three-and-out. LeBlanc then blocked Catholic-New Iberia’s punt, and Lazard returned it 16 yards to the Panthers’ 8-yard line. However, Dunham couldn’t convert on the first three plays near the goal line. Eugene intercepted Haven’s pass attempt into the end zone, marking his eighth and final interception of the year. “To do what they did was special,” Catholic coach Matt Desormeaux said. “They deserve this.” Landry completed 19 of 35 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 62 yards. Haven, named Most Outstanding Player from Dunham, passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns. “I just think it shows Coach’s confidence in us to go make a play,” Haven said of Weiner’s decision to go for a touchdown instead of a potential game-tying field goal. “We had all the confidence in the world that the play was going to work. That’s not how it worked out, and you just have to live with it. We gave it our all.”

Cecilia outlasts Franklinton, 35-32, in wild Division II Non-Select title game

NEW ORLEANS – The Cecilia Bulldogs, who had carried the sting of their 2023 state championship loss for 371 days, finally found redemption Friday night. The No. 18 seed defeated the top-seeded Franklinton Demons, 35-32, to win the LHSAA Division 2 Non-Select State Championship inside the Caesars Superdome. The triumph marked the school’s second state title, with the initial one coming in 1995. Cecilia fell short in last year’s final to district rival but a team loaded with playmakers came up clutch at key moments in all three phases of the game to take advantage of their second chance at glory. Trailing 32-29 with 3:21 left to play, the Bulldogs’ defense delivered its biggest play of the season. Defensive back Franky Frank stripped the ball from Franklinton’s Connor Magee, forcing a turnover and giving Cecilia possession at their own 49-yard line. Cecilia quarterback Diesel Solari, who had been stifled throughout the second half, was contained most of the night as a passer despite a big ground effort. After advancing to the Franklinton 39-yard line, he lofted the biggest pass of his football life. Solari lobbed the ball down the sideline into tight coverage. The ball ricocheted off wide receiver Ellis Stewart’s hands, but Stewart quickly adjusted, turning around to catch the bobbled pass behind two defenders in the end zone for a thrilling 39-yard touchdown, giving the Bulldogs what ended up as the game winning score with 1:17 remaining. Franklinton rushed down the field in the final seconds, near position for a potential game-tying field goal or a game-winning touchdown. The Demons reached the Bulldogs’ 28-yard line, but Cecilia’s defense came up with another crucial turnover. Demons quarterback Jacob Crain was sacked for a two-yard loss and stripped from behind. Called down initially, the replay system used for LHSAA football championship finals determined that Cecilia’s Jace Knott recovered the loose ball that came free from Crain’s grasp just before his knee hit the turf. The final fumble was the third forced turnover in the half for the Bulldogs. Unsurprisingly, Solari was named the Most Outstanding Player for Cecilia (12-3). The senior managed 148 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, while also throwing for 69 yards on 8-of-18 passing with the decisive score touchdown and an interception. Additionally, Solari set an LHSAA Prep Classic Division II record for the longest rush, an 83-yard run on Cecilia’s first offensive play from scrimmage. He scored to cap that drive on a six-yard scamper. Running back Braylon Calais also played a key role, contributing two touchdowns. He returned an 88-yard kickoff for a touchdown and added 52 yards on the ground with 9 carries, scoring another touchdown. Stewart led the Bulldogs’ receivers with 4 catches for 41 yards, with the 39-yard touchdown tip-and-grab marking the biggest catch of a topsy-turvy second half. For the Franklinton Demons (12-2), their magical 11-game winning streak came to an end in heartbreaking fashion. Despite an explosive offense throughout the first half, the Demons relied on their defense as well to stay in range after trailing 29-24 at the half. Senior running back Sy Austin led Franklinton’s ground game with 147 yards on 30 carries, scoring 3 touchdowns and adding a two-point conversion reception, earning Most Outstanding Player honors for the Demons. Crain fueled the air attack with 224 passing yards, completing 21 of 29 attempts with an interception. The junior also contributed 13 rushing yards and a touchdown. Demons wide receiver Damikies McClain led all receivers with 10 catches for 125 yards. Franklinton started strong, quickly marching down the field after receiving the opening kickoff. Crain completed passes of 20 and 13 yards, setting up Austen’s 6-yard touchdown run to give the Demons a 7-0 lead with 9:42 remaining in the first quarter. Cecilia responded just 13 seconds later. Braylon Calais took the ensuing kickoff at the 12-yard line, found a seam, and raced 88 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7. On their next possession, the Bulldogs executed a spectacular play. Starting from their own 16-yard line, Solari broke free for an 83-yard run before being stopped at the Demons’ 1-yard line. A false start penalty pushed the Bulldogs back, but two plays later, Solari scored on a quarterback sweep to give Cecilia a 14-7 lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter. Franklinton quickly answered with a surprise onside kick recovery, setting up a touchdown drive that culminated in Crain’s 1-yard score and a successful two-point conversion, putting the Demons ahead 15-14 with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter. Cecilia responded once again, starting a drive at their own 48-yard line. After a fumble threatened to stall the drive, the Bulldogs surprised Franklinton with a fake punt. Ellis Stewart threw a 27-yard pass to Calais for a first down, and Solari eventually punched it in from the 1-yard line for a touchdown. Calais powered his way into the end zone on the two-point conversion, giving Cecilia a 22-15 lead with 8:14 to play in the first half. Franklinton answered on the next possession with a 12-play, 78-yard drive, capped by Austen’s 13-yard touchdown run. The Demons attempted another two-point conversion, but Magee’s pass was incomplete. Cecilia maintained a slim 22-21 lead with 3:01 left in the half. Cecilia capitalized on the remaining time, driving 64 yards in 12 plays. Calais capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 29-21 with 28 seconds before halftime. Franklinton quickly responded, with Crain hitting McClain for a 43-yard pass to the Cecilia 17-yard line. Three plays later, Gabriel Ezell drilled a 36-yard field goal, trimming the Bulldogs’ lead to 29-24 at the half. The high-scoring first half gave way to a defensive struggle after halftime, with both teams remaining scoreless in the third quarter. Franklinton finally broke the deadlock on the first play of the fourth quarter, capitalizing on an interception. Crain and Austin moved the ball into the red zone, setting up the latter’s final touchdown of the night on a 14-yard run. Jaiden Garrett snared a two-point conversion toss by Crain in the back of the end zone, putting Franklinton ahead 32-29 with 11:45 remaining. In the end, Cecilia made enough big plays to complete a magical playoff run that included four road victories leading up to the Prep Classic drama.
Dartez, defense carries Vermilion Catholic to D-IV select title

NEW ORLEANS – On an afternoon when Jonathan Dartez did just about everything for Vermilion Catholic’s offense, it was a late defensive stop that sealed the Eagles’ 33-21 victory over Ouachita Christian for the Division IV Select state championship Thursday in the Caesars Superdome.Dartez, VC’s senior quarterback, rushed 47 times – the most ever in the 44-year history of the LHSAA Prep Classic – for 253 yards and two touchdowns and passed for two more scores to finish his brilliant career having accounted for a Louisiana-record 177 TDs. “Forty-seven carries,” OCS coach Steven Fitzhugh said. “He ought to sleep well tonight.” With all of Dartez’s efforts, it took a fourth-down 87-yard interception return for a touchdown from Caleb Guidry with nine seconds remaining to seal the victory for the top-seeded Eagles, who completed a perfect 14-0 season. “One of the most complementary games of football we’ve played all year,” said VC coach Broc Prejean. “All year long, teams have been able to get some yardage on us, but (in the red zone), they lock in. It’s almost like it’s their comfort zone.” Trailing 26-21, OCS (13-2) got the ball at its 20 after a missed field goal. The Eagles moved to the VC 21 in eight plays before three incompletions forced a fourth-and-10. Guidry stepped in front of Luke Vidrine’s pass to the far sideline and nothing but green turf in front of him. “Watching Caleb race down the sideline,” Prejean said, “my first thought was to look up at the scoreboard and ‘are we good?’” Said Guidry: “That was for the seniors. I just wanted to make that play for them.” In a back-and-forth game, Vermilion Catholic scored the game’s first 13 points on touchdown runs of 3 and 44 yards by Dartez, who had 16 carries for 113 yard in the opening 12 minutes. OCS got on the board on the first play of the second quarter on a 75-yard catch and run by Ridge Coats from Vidrine, and after an interception, the Eagles from Monroe claimed their only lead of the day on Makin Lenard’s 2-yard run with 5:18 remaining before halftime. A roughing the kicker call on a punt kept VC’s next possession alive, which ended with a 12-yard pass from Dartez to Allen McLain to send the Eagles from Abbeville to the locker room with a 20-14 edge. Dartez’s 20-yard pass from Jyrin Bessard extended the lead to 26-14 with 2:13 left in the third quarter. OCS made it a one-score game midway through the fourth quarter when Cam Volion went over two defenders for a 46-yard touchdown reception from Vidrine. After carrying the ball 29 times for 152 yards in the first half, Dartez “only” carried 18 times for 101 yards in the second half. Of the 60 offensive plays run by VC, Dartez was a part of 58 of them – and one of the two he wasn’t happened when he left the field for one play on the opening drive when his helmet came off. “There was no secret,” Fitzhugh said of Dartez. “We knew it just like everybody else this season knew it – you have to try to slow him down. Such a competitor. We hit him 25-plus times in the first half and he’s still going strong.” Dartez ended his final season with 2,761 yards rushing and 44 touchdowns and 1,638 passing yards and another 23 scores. Two years ago, Dartez was a sophomore and Prejean was a third-year head coach when VC lost 28-14 to OCS in this very building. Now, Prejean has his first state championship as a coach, 21 years after being a part of the school’s first title as a player. “Super special memory back in ’03,” Prejean said, “but if I’m being upfront and honest, there’s an amount of emotion and reward far greater than that.”

NEW ORLEANS – It was a rivalry renewed, and a battle of forces of power. In the end, the hurricane proved more forceful than the tornado.A total of 15 years after squaring off in New Orleans in a state championship game, No. 1 seed Haynesville and No. 2 seed South Plaquemines convened again Thursday afternoon in The Caesars Superdome. It took 15 years but the Hurricanes got their revenge. Jy’heim Williams caught a pair of touchdown passes, ran for a 2-point conversion and had a late game interception as South Plaquemines earned a 20-7 victory over Haynesville in the Division IV Non-Select state championship game Thursday afternoon at The Caesars Superdome. It is the first state championship for South Plaquemines since 2008 when Lyle Fitte was a star player for Cyril Crutchfield’s Hurricanes. Now, Fitte is a state championship coach at his alma mater.
Williams, who earned Most Outstanding Player honors, finished with six catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, rushed 14 times for 37 yards and had the game-clinching interception. After getting a stop to start the game, South Plaquemines drove 81 yards in 13 plays with Rod Parker hitting Williams with a 10-yard touchdown pass to take a 6-0 lead with 3:35 to play in the opening quarter. The Golden Tornado had a nice drive, reaching the South Plaquemines 14-yard-line early in the second quarter but a field goal attempt was blocked. Haynesville (13-1) got a short field off a short punt and took advantage, driving 48 yards in 10 plays with Isaiah Washington delivering a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jermarquis Hampton to give the Golden Tornado a 7-6 lead with 3:14 to play in the half.
The Hurricanes (11-3) regained the lead at 14-7 with 37 seconds left in the third quarter when Parker hit Williams with a 9-yard touchdown pass and Williams ran in the 2-point conversion to cap a 12 play, 71-yard drive taking seven minutes off the clock. Dean Encalade recovered a fumble and returns it to the Haynesville 35-yard-line with just over nine minutes to play in the game. That set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Trevontae Williams to make it 20-7 with 8:16 to play in the game. Jy’heim Williams intercepted a pass with 4:18 to play to seal the deal. The title is the third for South Plaquemines, with the pervious two championships coming with Fitte as a player in 2007 and 2008.

Running game, second-half stops lift Sterlington past St. James in state title game

NEW ORLEANS – The Sterlington Panthers rushed for 341 yards and came up big on defense down the stretch to defeat the St. James Wildcats, 35-28, in the Division III Non-Select state championship at the Caesars Superdome on Thursday night. With the score tied at 28-28 entering the fourth quarter, the sixth-seeded Panthers went on a drive using their bread and butter. A variety of players were involved in a 12-play, 67-yard drive that elapsed 5:03 off the clock. Five different Panthers had a carry on what turned out to be the game-deciding scoring drive and David Hickman finished it off with a six-yard touchdown run. The drive spanned 67 yards in 12 plays and came off a St. James punt that traveled only eight yards after a low snap. The top-seeded Wildcats had three possessions and were limited to 38 yards of total offense. Their most promising drive was when they moved the ball to the Sterlington 32-yard line. On 4th and 8, Jajuan Jackson threw incomplete for Kamon Mitchell as the pass carried out of bounds down the right sideline. St. James (10-3) had one more shot at it after they got a defensive stop, but Tomarion Burch picked off a Jackson pass with 25 seconds remaining to seal the Panthers’ third state championship in school history. Both teams traded haymakers in the first half as the first six drives ended in touchdowns. Sterlington (11-4) used their stout running game to set the tone. Their opening drive took half the first quarter and included a 4th and 6 conversion. Hagen Herring then took an option pitch down the right sideline for a 24-yard score. Jackson aired it out for the Wildcats as the freshman showed poise on the big stage. The Wildcats finished off their first two drives with touchdown runs. Then Jackson and St. James took the ball from their own 10 with 3:29 left. Jackson completed two big passes to fellow freshman Mitchell for 70 yards on a 90-yard drive. Herring led the Panthers in rushing with 121 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Hickman had two rushing touchdowns and 62 yards on 10 carries. Gaven Evans added 75 yards rushing on nine carries. Cam Bagwell led the defense in tackles with eight and had 1.5 sacks. Nolan Zenon of St. James had 23 total tackles, two shy of a state championship record. Jackson finished with 179 yards passing and was 12-of-20 through the air with a touchdown and an interception. Kani King Young led the Wildcats on the ground with 123 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.

Magnificent 11: New Orleans’ best high school football teams (Preseason Edition)
Da Boot Sports 8/28/2024 Article Courtesy of: Crescent City Sports By: Grant Chachere
As the summer heat gives way to the anticipation of fall, the New Orleans high school football scene is already buzzing with excitement. With all the enthusiasm surrounding this season, I’ve decided to introduce the “Magnificent Eleven,” where I’ll rank the top 11 high school football programs in the New Orleans area. Like all ranking systems, the Magnificent Eleven will be subject to change.
I don’t rank teams based on whether they would win in a head-to-head matchup, which is why a school playing 1A football might be ranked above a team playing 5A football. These preseason rankings are based on multiple factors: which players are returning this season, what each program has accomplished over the last few years, and the perceived hype surrounding the program, whether from outside or within.
If you see a team that you think is ranked too low or isn’t on the list, I can almost guarantee that your team will appear on the Magnificent Eleven in some form.
Edna Karr Edna Karr is the team to beat in the New Orleans area, which should come as no surprise. The Cougars have won back-to-back Catholic League titles and are looking to become the first team to three-peat since John Curtis did it from 2016 to 2018. However, Karr has not advanced to a state championship game since losing to Carencro in the 2020 Class 4A State Championship. That game was Karr’s fifth straight championship appearance, and they had won the previous four. This year could be different, as the Cougars return a wealth of talent, including blue-chip prospects: senior wide receiver Taron Francis, junior defensive lineman Richard Anderson, senior defensive lineman Corey Adams, and junior safety Aiden Hall.
Destrehan The Wildcats are back and are aiming to return to the Superdome for the second time in three years after a disappointing finish last season, when they were upset by Zachary in the Non-Select Division I quarterfinals. Destrehan boasts one of the most explosive offenses in the state, led by junior quarterback Jackson Fields, who threw for 2,404 yards and 23 touchdowns last season. In my opinion, the Wildcats have the best receiving corps in Louisiana, featuring LSU commit Phillip Wright IV, Louisiana Tech commit Johnnie Thiel, Jabari Mack, and Greg Wilfred. On defense, the Wildcats return another LSU commit in Jhase Thomas, the son of former New Orleans Saints cornerback Fred Thomas. Destrehan also has one of the best linebacking corps in the New Orleans area, consisting of senior linebackers Brody Picou, Myd Gilbert, and Semaj Walker.
Archbishop Shaw Shaw returns many key pieces from the 2022 squad that advanced to the Select Division II semifinals. The offense will be led by three-year starting quarterback Mason Wilson, senior running back Jasper Parker, and senior wide receiver Jacob Washington. Parker and Washington are both Michigan commits. On defense, the Eagles have one of the state’s biggest sleepers in senior linebacker Sheldon Green. Sophomore safety Rontrae Carter is another player to watch. With this team returning, the Eagles of the West Bank could make it back to the Superdome for the first time in over 15 years.
Riverside Academy The Rebels have much to be excited about a year after finishing as the Select Division IV runner-up. Riverside, the only 1A school to make the list, returns running back Dedric Lastie, one of the most electric ball carriers in the state. Lastie rushed for over 2,500 yards and scored 42 touchdowns last season. The defense should be strong again, as it returns defensive lineman Martrell Henry and linebacker Kaleb Brumfield.
John Curtis It feels strange to have John Curtis ranked this low. I’m pretty sure they’ll be higher once the season starts, which is why this list is called the “Preseason Magnificent Eleven.” The Patriots are ranked lower because they lost most of their offense from last season, including quarterback Dagan Bruno, wide receiver Michael Turner, two-time All-State offensive lineman Bryce Godfrey, and the running back duo of Marlon Prout and Jason Gabriel. Despite the losses on offense, all the new starters have been accustomed to the veer offense since middle school. They also return a solid defense led by senior linebacker Hayden Delatte, junior linebacker Jeffrey Curtis, senior safety Jason Curtis, and senior cornerback Trey Brown. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Patriots made a run for head coach JT Curtis’ 29th state championship.
Newman The biggest surprise about Newman’s football program is that it has never advanced to a state championship game. This might surprise many because of the talent the school produces, including Odell Beckham Jr. and at least four members of the Manning family. Fortunately for the Greenies, this might be the year they finally reach the Superdome. They return several big-time players and an experienced coaching staff led by head coach Nelson Stewart. The Greenies will return quarterback Eli Friend, a Princeton commit who did a great job filling the huge shoes left behind by Arch Manning. They also return veteran players such as wide receiver George Loop, running back Jake Randle, and offensive lineman Brett Bordelon, an LSU commit.
Mandeville Mandeville is getting a lot of hype right now, and for good reason. The Skippers return 13 starters from a team that made a Cinderella run, which included upset victories over 12th-seeded Sam Houston, fifth-seeded St. Amant, and fourth-seeded Airline before losing to Ruston, the eventual Non-Select Division I state champions. Mandeville will have one of the best backfields in the state, with running backs Nate Sheppard and Isaiah Baham. Both had multiple 100-yard games last season. Sheppard recorded over 2,000 all-purpose yards and 36 touchdowns last season, earning first-team All-District, All-Metro, and All-State honors. Baham also ran for 100 yards multiple times last season, despite sharing carries with a Division I running back. Also returning are quarterback Ben Hendricks, defensive lineman Marques Zenon, defensive back Dylan Henry, and kicker Creighton Wilbanks, one of the best in the country.
Lutcher Lutcher has always been talented, and this year is no different. Lutcher will return 15 starters from last season, including 10 of 11 on offense. On offense, Lutcher will return quarterback Zach Jenkins, the son of head coach Dwain Jenkins. They also have two playmakers in senior running back Trenton Chaney, a UL-Lafayette commit, and sophomore wide receiver Ashton Stark. On defense, Lutcher returns one of the top edge rushers in Louisiana, senior defensive end Reshad Sterling, a Houston commit.
Archbishop Rummel This year’s Rummel squad should be the best in a few years, as they return an experienced team with talent. Even though the Raiders finished with a 4-6 record in the regular season, they upset 15th-seeded Northwood-Shreveport, second-seeded Captain Shreve, and seventh-seeded St. Paul’s on the road before eventually losing to Catholic-Baton Rouge, the eventual Select Division I state champion. Although they lose star running back Jaidyn Martin, the Raiders return several starters, including quarterback Generald Buggage, offensive lineman Jamard Jones, defensive lineman Fred Banks, and cornerback Lennis Finnister.
St. Charles Catholic St. Charles had one of the best runs in school history, making five straight state championships and winning two. However, the Comets will have to replace arguably the greatest senior class in school history. Last year’s senior class played in five straight state championships and won two since they were in eighth grade from 2019 to 2023. They’ll have big shoes to fill with new faces at almost every position. Nonetheless, the commitment to excellence is strong at St. Charles. The Comets’ winning culture began under former legendary head coach Frank Monica and has reached new heights under his successor, Wayne Stein. Stein has done a fantastic job since taking over for his uncle, going 35-4 with two state championships under his belt. Although the Comets will move to Division II Select, don’t expect them to bow down to better competition. Some key players to watch out for are running back Skylar Edwards, wide receiver Noah Tucker, defensive end Shane Zimmerman, and cornerback Re’Shawn Helaire.
John F. Kennedy While they may not be as well-established as many of the schools that either made the list or just missed it, John F. Kennedy might be the biggest sleeper program in the New Orleans area. Fifth-year head coach Lynaris Elpheage has done a great job building a relatively new program into a legitimate power in New Orleans. Since fielding just 23 players on the team in 2023, the Cougars now have more than 50 players on the roster and have made two consecutive quarterfinal appearances in 2022 and 2023. After narrowly missing out on a semifinal appearance, John F. Kennedy is eyeing a state championship run, and they have the players to do it. The Cougars have one of the best passing attacks in the state with quarterback Amyne Darensourg and the wide receiver duo of James Evans and Kingston Jones. They also have a solid defense with linebacker Calvin Sparrow and cornerback Ernest Lyons.

CURTIS FALLS TO CATHOLIC IN FINAL SECONDS, 38-35
Da Boot Sports 11/25/2023 By: Terrill J. Weil
BATON ROUGE, LA - BATON ROUGE – Everyone knew this would be an epic contest between two high school football giants on Friday night and that's exactly what the quarterfinal contest turned out to be.
Catholic scored on the final play to take down the John Curtis Patriots in dramatic fashion, 38-35 when Daniel Beale hit Brooks Wright with a 15-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining.
Daniel Beale, has an outstanding ball game, accounting for all six touchdowns for the Bears.
“This is what our program is about, getting over tough circumstances and we fight , scratch, and claw to do our part and our team showed it tonight,” Catholic coach Hudson Fuller said.
The Bears took the early lead, taking advantage of a Curtis fumble by driving 25 yards culminating with Beale hitting Brooks Wright on a 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 with 2:36 to play in the first quarter.
John Curtis quickly answered as Dagan Bruno hit Tyler Mitchell on a 34-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7 by the end of the first quarter.
The Patriots took their first lead, 14-7 lead in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Marlon Prout.
After a Catholic 25-yard field goal pulled the Bears to within14-10, Jason Gabriel scored on a one yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a 21-10 halftime lead.
Catholic scored in the 3rd quarter to pull to within 21-16 on a 2-yard run by Beale. The two point conversion attempt failed.
The Patriots extended their lead to 28-16 lead on a 22-yard pass from Bruno to Michael Turner.
Beale would then find Bradley Wright on an 18-yard touchdown pass to cut the Curtid lead to 28-23 in the 4th quarter.
Catholic then scored on a one yard touchdown run by Beale after recovering an onside kick to retain possession. A successful two point conversion gave Catholic a 31-28 lead with 3:51 to play in the contest.
The Patriots fought back, responding with an 85 yard, nine play drive, culminating with a one yard touchdown plunge by Bruno giving Curtis a 35-31 lead with just 41 seconds remaining on the clock.
Catholic now advances to the semifinals and will host host the Rummel Raiders.
With the loss, John Curtis finishes the 2023 season with a 8-3 record.

NEW ORLEANS – The second verse was a virtual repeat of the first verse. Third-seeded Oak Grove dominated from start to finish in a 62-36 victory over fourth-seeded Haynesville in the Non-Select Division I state championship game Thursday evening at the Caesars Superdome. It is the fourth state championship in five seasons for Oak Grove and it was the third straight one-sided win over its north Louisiana rival. Oak Grove hammered Haynesville 61-27 at home in the regular season on Oct. 6. The Tigers also drilled the Golden Tornado 48-7 in the 2022 semifinals. Quarterback Jackson Bradley, a Louisiana Tech commit, and running back Jay Freeman each rushed for three touchdowns as the Tigers punished the Golden Tornado with 401 yards rushing. Bradley rushed 23 times for 211 yards, earning Most Outstanding Player honors while Freeman had 23 carries for 173 yards. The Tigers also took advantage of three turnovers by Haynesville. Oak Grove got a good kickoff return to start the game and took advantage of excellent field position, driving 47 yards in five plays with quarterback Jackson Bradley scoring on a 29-yard run to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Haynesville answered and it looked like it could be a good game as the Golden Tornado drove 80 yards in five plays with Isiah Washington connecting with JerMarquis Hampton on a 53-yard touchdown pass and it was 7-7 with 7:34 to play in the first quarter. The optimism for Haynesville was short-lived. Oak Grove ripped off the next 34 points to break the game open. Termarques Pritchard returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 14-7 lead. Spencer Foster then forced and recovered a fumble by Alonzo Jackson at the Haynesville 39-yard line. That led to a 6-yard touchdown run by Jay Freeman and it was 21-7 with 3:01 to play in the first quarter. After getting a stop, Bradley raced 69 yards for a score on the first play of the next Oak Grove possession to make it 28-7 with 53 seconds to play in the first quarter. The Tigers drove 54 yards in nine plays with Freeman scoring on a 2-yard run to give Oak Grove a 35-7 lead with 7:55 to play in the half. James Harris intercepted a Washington pass to set Oak Grove up at the Haynesville 9-yard line and three plays later, Bradley scored from eight yards out and it was 41-7 after the extra point was blocked. Haynesville ended the run when Byruss Burns broke a 68-yard touchdown run and Washington hit Jackson for the 2-point conversion to make it 41-15 by halftime. The Golden Tornado pulled within 41-23 when Washington scored on a 12-yard run with 1:44 to play in the third quarter. Washington ran in the 2-point conversion. Haynesville tried an onside kick, Oak Grove recovered, and the Tigers drove 49 yards in five plays with Freeman breaking free on a 31-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 48-23 with two seconds left in the third quarter. Temarques Pritchard picked off a Washington pass and returned it to the Haynesville 22-yard line. That led to another score as Freeman recovered a Bradley fumble in the end zone to give the Tigers a 55-23 lead with 10:04 to play in the game. Haynesville answered with a 60-yard drive in five plays, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Washington to make it 55-29 with 8:08 to play in the game after a failed 2-point conversion attempt. Oak Grove tacked another score on a 1-yard run by Madox Hurley to make it 62-29 with 6:45 to play in the game. Tra Brooks hit Hampton on a 29-yard touchdown pass to make it 62-36 with 4:03 to play in the game. Washington completed 6-of-19 passes for 113 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions and he rushed eight times for 63 yards and two scores as he earned Most Outstanding Player for the Golden Tornado. Haynesville (12-2) was once the dominant program among public schools, if not all schools, in the lower classifications in Louisiana, with 17 state championships, second most in Louisiana history. That torch has been passed to Oak Grove, as the Tigers captured the eighth state championship in program history.

NEW ORLEANS – In a game filled with momentum swings, Southern Lab grabbed it last. Jerome Harris’ 27-yard run with 2:44 remaining proved to be the difference as No. 2 seed Southern Lab defeated fifth-seeded Riverside Academy 42-35 in the Division IV select state championship game to open the Ochsner LHSAA Prep Classic Thursday at the Caesars Superdome. The title is the sixth in school history and second in the last three years for the Kittens (12-1). “We had a remarkable year,” said Southern Lab coach Darrell Asberry. “This is the best team I’ve had. These kids were resilient all year, two points away from being undefeated.” The Rebels (12-2), under second-year head coach Lee Roussel, played in a state championship game for the first time since 2016. “They’ve done something bigger than football,” said Roussel. “They may not realize now, but they will one day, what they’ve done not just for a football program, but for a school.” Harris scored twice in the fourth quarter as the Kittens rallied from a 35-27 deficit. He capped a 71-yard, nine-play drives with a 1-yard plunge, and Asberry’s two-point run tied the game with 6:13 to play, then scored the game-winner after a short punt put the Kittens in business at the Rebel 43. Riverside had one last chance and got into Southern Lab territory before Brock Bourgeois’ fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 29 seconds left. The Kittens kneeled out the victory. Dedric Lastie, who rushed for three touchdowns in the second half in leading Riverside back from a 27-14 halftime deficit, had 227 all-purpose yards, including 107 rushing. He was voted the Rebels’ outstanding player. He finished his sensational sophomore season with 2,528 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns. With Southern Lab’s defense stifling the run early, senior tight end Brennan Maus hauled in a pair of long touchdown passes as the Rebels jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes of the second quarter. Much like the Kittens did late in their semifinal win over Ouachita Christian, they rallied, scoring early and often and in all phases. Southern Lab outstanding player Armiryan Asberry, the coach’s son, rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Marlon Brown found Anthony Weatherspoon for a 58-yard touchdown pass and Ian James returned an interception 95 yards for a score just before halftime to send the Kittens to the locker room with a 27-14 lead. Early in the third quarter, the Rebels took advantage of a muffed punt to flip the momentum again. Lastie’s 23-yard run three minutes into the third quarter made it a 27-21 game, and after the Rebel defense forced a three-and-out, the offense went right back to work, capping a 62-yard drive with an 11-yard TD run to re-take the lead at 28-27. Lastie’s third touchdown, a 42-yard run to cap a 10-play, 95-yard drive, made it 35-27 with 10:40 left. The Kittens ran seven plays for zero yards with a pair of turnovers in the third quarter, but got the offense going in the final period.
Opelousas completes Cinderella run, tops Cecilia for Division II non-select title

NEW ORLEANS – For a school that last played for a state football championship when rock ‘n’ roll was a brand new term and needed to knock off four higher-seeded teams, all away from home, Cinderella might not be a good enough term to describe the Opelousas Tigers. The Tigers completed a storybook run to their first-ever title Friday, defeating District 5-4A rival Cecilia 26-13 in the Division II non-select championship game at the Caesars Superdome. No. 12 seed Opelousas (12-3), playing in its first state championship game since 1956, took out four of the top five seeds in a 22-day span en route to the title – fifth-seeded West Feliciana in the second round, No. 4 seed Lutcher in the quarterfinals, top-seeded North DeSoto in the semifinals and second-seeded Cecilia in the championship. In doing so, they became the sixth double-digit seed in the 25-year era of power rankings to win a state football title. “The expectation is to get to the Dome,” said Opelousas head coach Jimmy Zachery. “We wanted to make (Cecilia) earn everything … and it worked out in our favor.” Zack Malveaux, who accounted for 204 total yards, engineered most of the offense and was voted Opelousas’ outstanding player, but it was 215-pound running back D’Shaun Ford who delivered on the game-clinching drive. After Cecilia pulled within 18-13 with 5:02 left on a 6-yard Diesel Solari run, Ford gained 70 yards on six carries on the ensuing drive, capping the effort with a bruising 14-yard touchdown run with 1:33 left. Ford finished with 146 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns, both in the second half. Malveaux rushed for 114 yards, including first-half touchdown runs of 32 and 66 yards, and completed four of seven passes for 90 yards. The Tigers finished with 291 yards on the ground and 381 total yards. “D’Shaun gets better as the game progresses,” Zachery said. Opelousas’ defense held Cecilia (12-2) to 221 total yards. “For the most part, the box played well and we didn’t let them get going,” Zachery said. Solari accounted for both touchdowns, rushing for one score and passing for the other. Brent Gordon Jr., who had 16 tackles, was voted Cecilia’s outstanding player. Opelousas lost to Cecilia 25-22 seven weeks ago. The Tigers would not smell defeat again. “We had our chances; we didn’t capitalize on them,” said Cecilia coach Dennis Skains, who took his team to a state championship game for the first time in 28 years. “Hats off to Opelousas. They’re incredibly talented on both sides of the football.” The Tigers are the first state champion seeded 10th or higher since No. 15 seed Acadiana won the 2014 Class 5A championship. The other double-digit seeds to win titles were Acadiana (No. 27 in 5A) and White Castle (No. 15 in 1A) in 2010, Belle Chasse (No. 12 in 4A) in 2008 and Lutcher (No. 15 in 3A) in 2003.
