Kim Mulkey’s squad emphatically defeated the Kentucky Wildcats behind double-double performances from Aneesah Morrow and Angel Reese. Flau’Jae Johnson tallied 21 points in addition to her seven boards on the day. Hailey Van Lith finished with 15 scoring. In the loss, Kentucky Wildcats forward Ajae Petty secured a double-double of her own with a 13 point, 15 rebound performance. Star forward Angel Reese got the first points of the game for the Tigers before Hailey Van Lith followed it up with four early free throw makes. Aneesah Morrow tallied four points in the opening five minutes played. Kentucky held the Tigers to a 1-8 shooting stretch during the first quarter to keep the contest close. Morrow knocked down a step-back jumper to break the drought. Flau’jae Johnson earned her first game bucket through an acrobatic reverse layup off of a fast break. The stifling defensive effort from LSU held the Wildcats to just nine first-quarter points. If that is not impressive enough, Kentucky finished the opening 10 minutes with as many points as they did turnovers. LSU’s Van Lith and Reese exchanged a streak of layups with one another. The Tiger offense got hot and extended their lead to 31-17 with 4:11 remaining in the opening half. As soon as they heated up, the LSU women got ice cold. Throughout the final 3:28 of the first half, the Tigers got held scoreless as Kentucky drew to within six. The teams headed to the locker rooms with LSU leading 33-27. The Wildcats out-rebounded and outshot the Tigers in the first half, but halftime still provided an electric atmosphere as the seniors were honored. Escorted by their families and the legendary Shaquille O’Neal, Hailey Van Lith and Angel Reese walked to mid-court to meet Coach Mulkey. LSU erupted out of the break, running out to a 13-2 run and going back up by a wide margin. Johnson got flashy off a steal and tossed a behind-the-back pass to the tailing Van Lith for the easy breakaway basket. The Tigers got to their scoring prowess, leading 58-43 with just over a minute to go in the third quarter. Following baskets from each side, both teams headed to the fourth quarter as Kentucky trailed 60-45. Kentucky got the first bucket in the final period, but LSU’s Morrow responded quickly. LSU led 69-53 with 4:02 remaining in the basketball game. Although it was a relatively uneventful fourth quarter, LSU maintained its lead and delivered a win in the regular season finale. Up next, LSU will turn its sights onto the SEC tournament set to be held in Greenville, SC on March 6-10. LSU has already clinched the 2-seed for the tournament behind only Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks. An impressive performance would help LSU’s chances of moving up in seeding for the 2024 March Madness tournament. As always, Geaux Tigers! The Tigers held the Aggies to just 14 points in the first half and finished the night shooting 52.5-percent from the field. Aneesah Morrow earned her 16th double-double of the season as she led all scorers with 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead both teams off the glass. Flau’Jae Johnson finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds as she recorded her 16th-straight double figure game. Johnson went 7-11 from the field and connected on 2 three-point attempts. The Sophomore dropped 13 in the first half and was just one rebound shy from her first double-double this season. LSU opened the third with a 6-0 run that saw all 6 points come from the charity stripe inside the first two minutes. Both squads traded buckets through the middle of the quarter that featured some words exchanged back and forth by both teams. Technical fouls were assessed to Reese and A&M’s Kay Kay Green, those fouls offset and no free throws were taken. The Aggies started to chip into the Tiger leader after Reese was subbed out with 4 fouls halfway through the quarter. The Aggies went on an 11-2 run at the end of the quarter to trail by 21 heading into the final quarter. Texas A&M continued to gain on the Tigers as it put together a 7-2 run to get to as close as 18 points with over 8 minutes to play. The LSU women lead the all-time series versus South Carolina 22-18, but that holds close-to-no sentiment because the Gamecocks have been the victor in the past 14 meetings, including last season’s 88-64 throttling when both ranked in the top 3. An already electric atmosphere grew as tipoff neared. Pregame festivities included a plaza party outside of the PMAC, food trucks, a live DJ, shirt giveaways, and not to mention ESPN’s College Game Day making the trip to Baton Rouge to feature a women’s basketball game for the first time… EVER. South Carolina won the tip and scored the first basket of the game, an easy layup from Bree Hall. The offense came early and often for both sides, with Chloe Kitts leading the way for the Gamecocks and Aneesah Morrow for the Tigers. With 4:12 remaining in the opening quarter, LSU led 12-11. The Tigers went on a 9-0 scoring run over two minutes out of the official timeout before SC stopped the drought. Van Lith made her first trip to the free-throw line but missed both attempts. LSU gathered the rebound and punched it back out to Lith, where she nailed her first three-ball of the contest. The Gamecocks trailed 24-15 with nine ticks left in the first but capitalized, hitting a buzzer-beating three to draw within six. Kim Mulkey got the home crowd rowdy, and the fans got awarded for their support. Angel “Bayou Barbie” Reese got going in the second quarter with her scoring. She quickly jumped from three first-quarter points to double digits. Flau’jae Johnson joined the party and showed why she is a defensive force. Johnson poked the ball away from behind the South Carolina possession, leading to a fast break basket for the Tigers. Number four followed that up by stepping into a huge triple. Although Mulkey’s Tigers were able to extend their lead to as many as 11 in the opening 20 minutes of play, Stacey kept her Gamecocks fiery and coached them to a 6-0 run to close out the half. South Carolina trailed 41-36 as the teams headed for the locker rooms, setting the stage for an entertaining finish. The number-one team in the country did not come into Baton Rouge to lay down the fight. On the second half’s opening possession, the Gamecocks forced Reese into a turnover and finished it with a bucket on the other end. Mikaylah Williams started the scoring for LSU in the final quarter of play with a split pair of free throw attempts.. Angel Reese picked up her fourth foul early into the period, forcing Mulkey to sit the star forward. South Carolina led LSU 63-61. Angel Reese re-entered the contest. Aggressive defensive pressure from the Tigers and clutch shots from Hailey Van Lith and Williams put LSU back in front 67-65. Reese was dealt her fifth and final foul with just over four minutes to play. South Carolina tied the game and subsequently took the lead off a deep trey from Bree Hall. Van Lith displayed why she was a top player in the nation last year by responding with a massive triple of her own to tie the game at 70 apiece, final Timeout, LSU. The Gamecocks fired back with a “not so fast.” Hall nailed a dagger three-pointer against the Tigers, putting South Carolina in front 73-70. From there, they would not look back. The LSU Tigers simply could not muster enough offense. South Carolina would make another dagger basket and hit a free throw before the final horn sounded. Kim Mulkey and the Tigers gave the Gamecocks all they could handle, but in the end, Dawn Stacey and South Carolina rolled into Baton Rouge and proved they were still the Queens of the SEC. With the dIsappointing loss the Tigers are now 18-3 overall and 5-2 in the SEC. LSU will next travel to Starkville for a road date with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Geaux Tigers!
