1/28/2021 LSU Sports Information By: Chelsey Chamberlain BATON ROUGE - The 2021 SEC Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll was released Thursday morning, and the league's coaches have predicted the LSU softball team to finish second in the conference. LSU picked up two first place votes as they sit behind Alabama. Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky round out the top five of the SEC. The Tigers are coming off a 21-3 overall mark from a shortened 2020 season.They return 21 players from last year's squad. Sophomore Georgia Clark led the Tigers at the plate with a .425 batting average and four home runs last season. All-SEC performer Aliyah Andrews and All-American Shelbi Sunseri also return for the Tigers. The Tigers kick off the 2021 season on February 11 with the Tiger Classic, playing host to McNeese State, Duke, Kansas and Central Arkansas. Points for the poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 basis. LSU Sports Information By: Chelsey Chamberlain BATON ROUGE – With a little over two weeks away from the start of the 2021 season, the LSU Softball team will begin the new campaign ranked fifth in both the in the USA Today/NFCA DI Coaches poll and ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. LSU, who has been ranked every week since the end of the 2014 season, ended the shortened 2020 season with a 21-3 overall record. The Tigers return 21 players from the 2020 season that was shortened due to the pandemic. LSU SportsInformation By: Chesley Chamberlain BATON ROUGE – The LSU softball team released the full 2021 regular season schedule Thursday afternoon. For a full view of the 2021 schedule, click here. The schedule begins on February 11 with the annual Tiger Classic, playing host to Duke, Kansas, Central Arkansas and McNeese. Following the Tigers Classic, LSU will host two midweek matchups against Louisiana Tech and North Dakota before traveling to Tuscaloosa for the Bama Bash February 19. In that tournament, the Tigers will face Gardner-Webb, Liberty and Alabama in non-conference contests. The second home tournament for the Tigers will take place February 25-28 and will include games against ULL, Oklahoma State and Buffalo. To start off March, the Tigers will face Southern Miss in a midweek matchup in Tiger Park before hosting Texas for a three-game series March 5-6. The Tigers will start out conference play on the road, heading to Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee March 12-14. They will return home to take on Texas A&M March 19-21 and will follow with a road trip to Florida March 26-28. Ole Miss will make a visit to Tiger Park Easter weekend, April 2-4 before the Tigers take road trips to Missouri on April 9-11 and to Kentucky April 23-25. LSU will play the final two weeks of the regular season at home with Arkansas on April 30-May 2 and Auburn May 7-8. An opportunity to make-up any postponed contests will be May 3-5 as a midweek doubleheader. The 2021 SEC Softball Tournament is set for May 12-15 at Rhoads Stadium on the campus of the Alabama. Throughout the conference portion of the season, the Tigers will have three midweek road matchups against Southeastern (March 16), South Alabama (March 24)and McNeese (April 13), and a home midweek against ULM (March 30). LSU will also play a three-game series at NC State April 16-17. NCAA Regional dates are set for May 21-23 with Super Regionals following May 27-30. The schedule features four home series and four away series with a built in bye weekend. "Day one is always full of excitement," said head coach Beth Torina. "It's all the emotions rolled into one. And this year means a little bit more. Every pitch, every hit, every play, we are going to make it count." Over the course of the last couple months, the Tigers engaged in strength and conditioning workouts, individual and team practices and competed in many scrimmages within the team. The team started out Friday's practice in three different groups – a lifting group, a defense group and a hitting group. They rotated to the different areas throughout the practice, working on various drills. LSU returns 21 players from the 2020 season that was shortened due to the pandemic. The Tigers will have their entire pitching staff back in Sunseri, Maribeth Gorsuch, Shelby Wickersham, Ali Kilponen, Taylor Edwards and Victoria Abrams. The staff finished with the best ERA in the country at 0.95. Wickersham led the team with the second best ERA in the nation at 0.40. The Tigers added eight new freshman to the squad and will look to second year players in Taylor Pleasants, Ciara Briggs and Raeleen Gutierrez, who all made a significant impact in just a short amount of time last season.
