Da Boot Sports 4/30/2022 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonts Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 9/10 Florida (37-13, 12-11 SEC) hitters collected seven hits across the first three innings, as they posted a 6-1 win against No. 19 LSU (32-18, 11-9 SEC) Saturday at Tiger Park. Florida scratched across two runs in the first with a home run to center field from right fielder Cheyenne Lindsey. Following two singles, left fielder Katie Kistler singled to the left side scoring the second run of the inning. The Gators tacked on a single run in the next four innings to bring the score to 6-0. LSU's senior Shelbi Sunseri brought the Tigers within five in the bottom of the seventh after smoking a ball over the left field wall for her 14th home run this season. Sophomore Morgan Smith followed with a double a couple batters later to account for the two Tigers' hits. Senior Shelby Wickersham (2-5) was charged with the loss after tossing one inning and giving two earned runs on five hits. Florida's Lexie Delbrey picked up the win, throwing six innings while only allowing one run. Head Coach Beth Torina On her team's performance... "It was bad softball. We just did not play well at all. I mean, when you look at the scoreboard we allowed twelve hits, four errors, and had two hits on our side. It was just a poorly played game." On if her team got too comfortable after the win last night... "I think our offense got frustrated. I think they got frustrated early and did not have a great response to it and that leaked into everything we were doing. We need to get more outs on the mound ourselves. We need to force more swings and misses and attack hitters better to help our offense have some time. It felt like the lead just kept climbing and climbing." Pitcher/Utility Shelbi Sunseri On the difference between the first and second game of the series… “Honestly, it was lazy. I think we just came out and didn’t have a lot of effort. We made errors, and we just didn’t have a lot of energy. We didn’t play LSU softball like we normally do. Our thing is 'can’t be crazy here', and I definitely don’t think we brought that energy today, collectively. Really, I just think we played bad softball today.” On the possibility of getting comfortable from the game one win… “I don’t know that we got comfortable; we just didn’t just show up today. It could have been a lot of things. I think, collectively, our dugout wasn’t in it, people on the field weren’t in it. I think as a whole, we didn’t play well. We didn’t make the routine plays we should’ve made, and it spiraled from there.” ON DECK The Tigers return to the diamond Sunday for the rubber game of the SEC series. The matchup is set for an 11 a.m. CT start, and it can be viewed on ESPN2.

Da Boot Sports 4/29/2020 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 19 LSU (32-17, 11-8 SEC) recorded a season-high .515 batting average behind 17 hits in the 9-1 victory over No. 9/10 Florida (36-13, 11-11 SEC) in six innings Friday night at Tiger Park. With the win, LSU claimed its 10th over a 12-game span and have registered 107 hits and 18 home runs. Every Tiger in the lineup had a hit and four players had multiple hits. Defensively, the Tigers held Florida to a .087 batting average led by junior Ali Kilponen who has nine consecutive wins to improve to 17-4 in the circle. Kilponen relinquished only two hits and one run with three strikeouts in six innings. Senior Shelbi Sunseri and junior Georgia Clark each had three hits in four at-bats. Clark had two RBIs on the night, including her 15th home run of the season. Sophomores Danieca Coffey and Taylor Pleasants was 2-for-4 at the dish. Coffey turned in her 25th career multiple hit game, while Pleasants – who also went yard for the second consecutive game – logged her 30th career multiple RBI game with a team-high three ribbies. The Tigers opened the contest with two singles and an RBI double from Pleasants, and sophomore Ali Newland hit a two-RBI single with two outs to grab an early 3-0 lead after the first inning of play. LSU extended its margin to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Freshman McKenzie Redoutey led off with a double to right center, junior Morgan Cummins singled to right field, and freshman Sydney Peterson drove in Redoutey with a single to centerfield. Sophomore Ciara Briggs drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, and Clark singled to left field for her first RBI of the game to cap a two-run inning behind four hits. Florida dodged being shutout by putting up one run in the top of the sixth inning, but LSU clapped back with four runs in the bottom half inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Pleasants and Clark. Sophomore Morgan Smith delivered the dagger with an RBI double to give LSU the 9-1 run-rule win. Head Coach Beth Torina On the team’s offensive performance... "It was great. It was great to see hits throughout the lineup. Everyone in our lineup had a hit today, which is incredible to think about. Seeing everybody have success like that, you know Howard [Dobson], Lindsey [Leftwich], and Sandra [Simmons] have really been putting in the work and it shows. The kids have been putting in work, and they are seeing the results. On how important it was to jump on Florida early... "Any time we can see two pitchers in game one, it helps us out in games two and three, so I was glad we were able to see multiple arms and that they only saw one of ours for just six innings." Pitcher Ali Kilponen On her performance… “I thought I did well. There are things that I can improve on. I think that I can watch my film tonight and see what pitches were working and what pitches weren’t. I can improve my changeup from tonight. It was kind of elevated, so I’m going to go in the bullpen and do some extra drills to make sure that I have that pitch.” On the team’s defensive performance… “The defense is unreal. Honestly, our team is behind me so well. The defense is amazing. They are making unreal plays. To follow up, their offense is unreal and they’re hitting the ball so well. I can breathe because it’s so easy and fun.” Infielder Georgia Clark On tonight’s hitting performance… “First thing that comes to mind is ‘what a good hitting performance.’ We executed in spots that we needed to. We wanted to do better with runners in scoring position and I think we were aggressive in making sure we didn’t leave any runners on base and getting early runs for our pitcher [Ali Kilponen] which gave us confidence.” On recent offensive performances… “I think the past few weekends we’ve dominated offensively and that’s a testament to our game plans and preparations made by the coaches so that we can come out and attack the strike zone. I would say this was an all-around good win. Infielder Taylor Pleasants On how the offense performed… “It showed what we did this week. We put in a lot of work, and we were very diligent with what we were looking for and looking at. We did a lot of machine work and hit a lot of balls this week, and it paid off.” On her personal performance… “Just putting in the work really shows. I came early this morning to work on that screwball from [Florida pitcher Elizabeth] Hightower and any outside pitches. Having that pay off was nice. Once one person gets going, it’s a trickle effect.” ON DECK The series continues Saturday, April 30 with the first pitch set for 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN2. ON DECK LSU takes on No. 13/14 Georgia for a three-game series in Athens, Ga. April 22-24. Da Boot Sports 4/16/2022 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 21/23 LSU (27-16, 8-7 SEC) completed the series sweep over South Carolina (23-21, 2-13 SEC) with an 8-0 shutout victory Saturday afternoon at Tiger Park. LSU dominated the weekend series in the circle as they concluded with its second shutout of the weekend. Overall, the Tigers recorded a 1.05 ERA and held the Gamecocks’ bats to a .186 batting average behind 23 strikeouts and allowed three runs in 20.0 innings pitched. Offensively, the Tigers had a .307 average with 23 hits and 15 RBIs. Senior Shelbi Sunseri had a day in the series finale as she hit her 13th home run of the season and No. 46 in her career, while also logging her second shutout this season to improve to 6-6 in the circle. In her first conference win in 2022, Sunseri logged four strikeouts and allowed five hits and one walk in her fifth complete game. Sophomore Ciara Briggs continued to rake at the plate as she finished with a 3-for-4 performance. Sophomore Ali Newland had a hit and led the team with three RBIs, and Sunseri had two RBIs in the win. Junior Georgia Clark and freshman McKenzie Redoutey each had one hit and one RBI, and sophomores Danieca Coffey, Taylor Pleasants, Raeleen Gutierrez, and junior Morgan Cummins each contributed a hit. The Tigers earned their first SEC sweep of the season and turned in their first sweep against a conference team since sweeping Georgia in 2019. LSU has swept South Carolina nine times in the all-time series and six times in Baton Rouge. The last time the Tigers swept the Gamecocks was in 2016. LSU struck first in the opening inning with three runs on three hits. Briggs and Pleasants singled, and Clark recorded an RBI bunt single to score the game’s first run. Newland reached on a fielder’s choice and was credited with an RBI, and Clark scurried home after a SC throwing error. Newland tallied her second RBI of the game on a groundout to the pitcher in the third inning to put LSU ahead, 4-0. In the fourth inning, Briggs registered a leadoff single to the shortstop, and two batters later, Sunseri hit her second two-run shot of the series to extend LSU’s lead, 6-0. The Tigers sealed the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Pleasants opened the stanza with a walk. A couple batters later, back-to-back RBI doubles from Newland and Redoutey completed the game as a run-rule. Head Coach Beth Torina On the Tigers’ ability to win in different ways... “We’ve talked about winning in a lot of different ways and we’ve shown that our team is capable of that. We’ve shown that we can do it all, so it’s nice to bring it all together in one weekend. That’s what we’ve really been searching for here all season long. On Shelbi Sunseri’s complete game… “She needed that. I think she needed a win, just personally, getting some confidence back. Everyone standing here knows how good she is. She’s very talented, and I think just kind of getting out of her own way and going back to just being herself, competing, throwing good pitches helped (her confidence) today.” Utility Ali Newland On the first sweep of the season… “I think that the sweep wasn’t really what we were worried about. I think we were trying to take it one game at a time and put our best foot forward every game so we can get to where we want come postseason.” On the shutouts for LSU against South Carolina… “I think it’s indicative of how well-rounded we are as a team. We can do so many things well. It’s never on one person. If one part of the team is not necessarily having their best day, we know we have shut down stuff coming from the rest of the team. It’s never like ‘oh the pitching staff’s not doing well, we can’t win this game.’ We have so many ways to win and it shows up all the time.” Pitcher Shelbi Sunseri On her homerun… “I just kind of put the bat on the ball. I’ve been disciplined all weekend and I just took a guess on what was coming. It was there and it happened. I was trying to extend the inning and pass the bat to the next person. On focusing on getting on getting a sweep… “We don’t really focus on it. We try to focus on one game at a time. That’s our whole theme as Tigers. We have a process and it’s win one pitch, win the next one, and win the game. Then it’s win game two and win the series. I think really focusing on winning each pitch leads us to get a sweep. It’s a good spot for our team to be in. It gives us confidence to know that we can do this and we’re capable of being a great team. We have so much talent. It’s a good reminder that the work we’re putting in is paying off and it’s going to continue to pay off. We just see that little by little.” ON DECK LSU will begin a four-game road trip Tuesday, April 19 at McNeese before traveling to Athens, Ga. for a three-game series against Georgia April 22-24. Da Boot Sports 4/15/2022 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 21/23 LSU (26-16, 7-7 SEC) softball team used a five-run fifth inning to defeat South Carolina (23-20, 2-12 SEC) 7-3 on Good Friday at Tiger Park. The win marks No. 20 for the Tigers at Tiger Park this season as they claimed the three-game series against the Gamecocks and earned their fourth conference win over a five-game span. Sophomore Ciara Briggs registered her 17th multiple-hit game this season as she went 2-for-3 at the plate and tallied a season-high three RBIs in the win. Sophomore Danieca Coffey followed with her 16th multi-hit game this season (2-for-3) and had one RBI. Sophomore Taylor Pleasants also registered a hit and an RBI. Freshman Raelin Chaffin improved to 5-2 in the circle as she dominated in relief. Chaffin shut out SC by striking out seven batters and allowed just one hit and no walks in 4.2 innings of work. Junior Shelby Wickersham got the start, logging two strikeouts in 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and three runs. After two scoreless innings, South Carolina crossed three runs in the third to force an LSU pitching change. That would be all the Gamecocks’ offense could produce as they finished with one hit in the final four innings. The Tigers responded with two runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double from Coffey. Coffey also accounted for the second run as she crossed home plate thanks to a SC fielding error. In the fifth inning, another Gamecock fielding error scored sophomore Ali Newland to knot the score at three runs apiece, and later with the bases loaded, Briggs struck with a three-RBI triple to give LSU the lead. Pleasants followed Briggs’ at-bat with an RBI single through the right side that capped a five-run inning, giving the Tigers a 7-3 lead after five frames. Chaffin continued to own the circle as she struck out four in the sixth and seventh innings combined, including the final out to end the game. Head Coach Beth Torina On Raelin Chaffin’s performance… “She did a great job. She came out well prepared and did a good job of executing the plan, throwing hard, and hitting her spots. On stranding runners early in the game… “I think that was the story of the game early on. We had a lot of runners left on base to start, but in the back half we only had 2. Capitalizing on opportunities and some of their mistakes and things that were given is what gave us the lead.” Pitcher Raelin Chaffin On her performance tonight… “Their weaknesses were my strengths, so that’s always good as a pitcher when your best stuff is what they are the worst at. That’s why I was getting in my groove because I knew that was my best stuff.” On her strengths as a pitcher… “For me, it’s throwing hard. We knew the velocity would get to them as well as me hitting my spots, too. We knew that if I could hit a corner, that they would struggle on that. So, I would say hitting spots and throwing hard.” Outfielder Ciara Briggs On the approach at the plate… “We’re just trying to use all our tools. We just wanted to stay in our plan with their pitching. Whoever it was, we just wanted to do us and just read the defense and whatever we can do to turn the lineup over.” On her triple in the fifth inning … “There are some days you just see the ball bigger, and I saw that one big and took my hack and it worked out for me in the end. Like I said, we put in the preparation, and it helped me out in the long run.” ON DECK The series will conclude with an 11 a.m. CT first pitch on Saturday, April 16 and will be televised on SEC Network. Da Boot Sports 4/14/2022 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior Ali Kilponen tossed her fifth shutout this season and 10th of her career as No. 21/23 LSU (25-16, 6-7 SEC) shutout South Carolina (23-19, 2-11 SEC) 4-0 in the series opener Thursday night at Tiger Park. LSU recorded its 10th shutout victory this season. Kilponen (14-4) started strong as she retired nine of 10 batters in her first round through the order and had four strikeouts through three innings of work. Kilponen proceeded to sit down the next seven batters and finished the game with 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits in her 10th complete game this season. Senior Shelbi Sunseri hit her 12th home run of the season and now has 45 dingers in her career. Sunseri led the team with two RBIs, while sophomores Raeleen Gutierrez and Danieca Coffey contributed one hit and one RBI, respectively. In the bottom of the second inning, junior Georgia Clark got on base with a walk and Sunseri crushed a 2-1 pitch for a two-run shot to give LSU its first pair of runs. The Tigers crossed another two runs in the fifth inning when Coffey reached on a fielder’s choice that resulted in sophomore Cait Calland and freshman Sydney Peterson touching home plate. Both reached on walks. Kilponen sealed the game by recording four strikeouts in the sixth and seventh inning combined. Head Coach Beth Torina On the performance of the team defensively… “They have been playing good defense the last few games. I think it is a big key. I always say, getting two out of three between pitching, defense and offense wins every day. We pitched well today and played great defense, and that is a big reason for the win. On moving forward for the rest of the weekend… “We are always working. I think it is easier to improve after a win than it is from a loss. It is a little easier to go back and analyze some things without feeling so frustrated. Learning from a win is a much better scenario than learning in a loss.” Pitcher Ali Kilponen On her performance on the mound… “I thought it was good. There are some good takeaways that I can use from today and there are also some things that I can improve so I can be better if I have to go in tomorrow.” On how the defense performed behind her… “My defense was incredible today. Taylor [Pleasants] and Danieca [Coffey] were incredible making the plays that they did. It is cool being on the mound when you have a defense working that hard for you.” Catcher Cait Calland On the defense tonight… “It was lights out. It’s easy to play when your pitcher is dealing on the mound like Ali [Kilponen] was. She did well, and behind her, we were lights out. It is awesome to play with.” On Kilponen’s performance… “She was so good. I think it’s just a representation of what she does in practice every day. That’s the Ali Kilponen that we all know and see every day at practice, and I think it’s so cool that it paid off for her today.” ON DECK LSU and South Carolina will play game two on Good Friday, April 14, at 6 p.m. CT.
