Da Boot Sports 2/24/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 6/7 LSU (13-0) swept the 2024 Tiger Classic after registering two shutouts on day three. LSU defeated Houston (11-4), 5-0 in the day's first game, and run-ruled Austin Peay (5-5), 11-0 in five innings on Saturday at Tiger Park. Pitchers Raelin Chaffin (4-0) and Emillee Casanova (2-0) split 10 strikeouts evenly, and both tossed their third career shutout. Outfielder Ali Newland stole the show as she had four extra-base hits on the day, including her third home run of the season, and she added four RBIs. Freshman infielder Sierra Daniel started both games at second base and took advantage of the opportunity as she matched a team-best four hits and led the team with four runs scored. Infielder Taylor Pleasants was 3-for-6 and led the team with five RBIs highlighted by a three-RBI home run, and outfielder McKenzie Redoutey also had three hits, including two doubles, and extended her hitting streak to a team-best eight games. Outfielder Ciara Briggs and infielder Danieca Coffey had two hits and two runs, and Coffey had three total RBIs. She totaled five strikeouts and gave up two hits and one walk in her second complete-game shutout this season. Houston's Tamya Waiters (1-2) was handed the loss after walking three batters and giving up two hits in 2.2 innings. Shelby Smith pitched 3.1 innings and surrendered five hits and four runs. The Cougars' pitching staff could not strike out a single Tiger for the second consecutive game. Chaffin started dealing early, striking out four of the first six batters she faced, and the LSU defense retired 15 of the first 17 batters through five innings. A leadoff double from Gutierrez, followed by a double from Newland, gave LSU a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Tigers tallied four runs on four hits in the fifth frame to extend their margin to 5-0, highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Newland and Redoutey. Game Two Casanova turned in her second complete-game shutout this season, matching a career-high five strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Casanova gave up three hits but handed out no free passes. Austin Peay's Jordan Benefiel (3-2) picked up the loss, striking out two batters in 2.1 innings, giving up nine runs on 10 hits, and walking four batters. Offensively, the Tigers recorded their third game in a four-game span, reaching double-figure hits, finishing with 13, and scoring a run in every inning in their 11-0 victory. Daniel and Pleasants were 3-for-3 at the plate. Daniel scored a game-high three runs, and Pleasants logged four RBIs. Newland was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Coffey had three RBIs off one hit. A pair of two-out singles from Pleasants and Gutierrez set up an RBI double by Newland to put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the first. LSU went ahead 2-0 through two innings after another two-out single from Pleasants drove home Daniel, who reached on a single earlier in the inning. A busy third inning saw seven runs plated by the Tigers. Newland opened the inning with a home run, the third leadoff home run of the weekend, and after singles from Redoutey and Daniel that sandwiched a walk from Hannah Carson, Coffey hit a three-RBI double and advanced to third to burst the game open. With two runners on after Briggs drew a walk, Pleasants capped the inning with a three-run home run, giving LSU a 9-0 lead. The Bayou Bengals added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run pinch-hit home run from Abigail Savoy. It was Savoy's first career hit. Da Boot Sports 2/23/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: Keonte Herrera BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 6/7 LSU put together an offensive clinic on day two at the Tiger Classic that featured a .450 batting average behind 27 hits, 18 runs and 17 RBIs in a pair of wins over Boise State and Houston on Friday at Tiger Park. After securing the regular season sweep against Boise State (9-5) with an 8-5 victory, LSU improved to 11-0 with a 10-3 win over Houston (11-2), turning in a season-high 16 hits in the contest. No LSU Tiger struck out in the nightcap versus Houston. “Everybody wants to win every game, so there’s something to that mindset,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “Honestly, I think our players want to go out and win one pitch at a time with the best team effort they can put forth. If we play like that, hopefully, we end up on the right side of the game.” On the day, Ali Newland went 5-for-8 from the plate (.625) to lead the team hits. Newland was one of three LSU Tigers to finish with four RBIs and logged one of the club’s two home runs. Taylor Pleasants had a team-high .667 batting average and led a trio of batters with four hits, including Raeleen Gutierrez and Danieca Coffey. Pleasants and Gutierrez matched Newland’s four RBIs, and Coffey had two RBIs, which included a solo home run against Houston. Raelin Chaffin (3-0) earned a win and her first career save Friday as she threw 7.0 innings in two appearances that saw the junior hurler strike out a staff-high nine batters and held opposing batters to a .192 average. “She’s [Chaffin] thrown with a lot of velocity this year, and she’s done a good job of being prepared and working hard,” said Coach Torina. “What we asked her to do today was tough, and she had no second thoughts about it and went for it.” Emma Strood (2-0) made her second start of the season and received a win against Boise State, and Sydney Berzon concluded the day with a 0.00 ERA with three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Boise State's pitcher Taylor Caudill was charged the loss in LSU's first game of the day after striking out two batters and giving up seven runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings, and Houston's Shelby Smith (6-1) picked up her first loss in 2024 after relinquishing four runs and six hits in 3.0 innings. Game One Pleasants totaled her 55th career multiple RBI game with a game-high three RBIs and was 2-for-3 against the Broncos. Gutierrez followed suit with three RBIs and was 2-for-4 at the dish. Newland also recorded two hits in the game and drove in two runs in the victory, while Coffey matched a career-best three runs and drew two walks. Strood (1-0) got the start in the circle and picked up the win, striking out two batters while allowing six hits, five runs and three walks in 4.0 innings. Chaffin came in relief for 3.0 innings, sat down three batters, and gave up one hit and no runs for her first career save. LSU struck first against Boise State thanks to a two-RBI single by Gutierrez in the first inning. LSU stayed busy in the second inning with Pleasants’ two-RBI single followed by Gutierrez’s second hit to drive in her third ribbie of the game, stretching the lead 5-0. The Broncos cut into the deficit with a two-run homer to make the score 5-2 in the top of the fourth frame, and although the Tigers added a run in the bottom half-inning off an RBI double from Newland, Boise State hit a three-run dinger in the fifth to pull within one run at 6-5. The Fighting Tigers answered again in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to go ahead 8-5 courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Pleasants and an RBI double from Newland. The LSU defense wrapped up the game by retiring six of the final seven batters, featuring Chaffin’s third strikeout in the seventh. Game Two Coffey and Newland paved the way offensively with three hits, two runs and two RBIs each against Houston. The duo also hit their second home run of the season in the victory. Coffey jump-started the game with a leadoff home run for her second longball of the season. Newland gave the Tigers another run with an RBI double through the right side, putting the home club ahead 2-0 lead after the first stanza. Chaffin struck out four of the game’s first six batters she faced, including striking out the side in the second. She finished with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings to pick up her third win. UH crossed a run at the top of the third, but LSU responded with two at the bottom after Pleasants’ leadoff double and was brought home immediately from Gutierrez’s RBI double. Carson pushed another run across from a sac-fly RBI to make the score 4-1 through three. The Cougars made it a one-run game at 4-3 due to a couple of runs in the fourth, but Berzon took over in the fifth with a pair of strikeouts and ultimately held UH to just two hits in the final three innings, securing her fourth career save and first of the season. LSU rattled off five runs on six hits in the fifth to create distance on the scoreboard and balloon the lead to 9-3, and Newland capped the game with a solo shot to left-center in the sixth inning for her second home run of the season. Up Next LSU ends the Tiger Classic with another doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Tigers take on Houston at 4 p.m. CT, followed by a 6:30 p.m. CT game against Austin Peay at Tiger Park. It was Pleasants’ third career walk-off home run but her first in extra innings. The last time LSU had an extra-inning walk-off home run was when Shelbi Sunseri hit a solo shot for a 3-2 decision in 10 innings at Tiger Park against Drake on Feb. 26, 2022. Pitcher Sydney Berzon improved to 4-0 in the circle and tossed a complete game with a career-high 13 strikeouts. Berzon relinquished zero earned runs, walked one batter, and gave up five hits. “I think, more than talent or anything else, the ability to be gritty and be tough in difficult situations is huge,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “I think the offense was gritty with Taylor [Pleasants] getting that walk-off hit, but the gritty player tonight was Sydney Berzon. She kept us in this ball game and did a great job of pitching until we scored. I think her toughness and grittiness are a big strength for her.” Outfielder McKenzie Redoutey and infielder Danieca Coffey had their first multi-hit games of the season with two knocks, and outfielder Ciara Briggs also joined in with two hits as well, her third multi-hit game of the season. Redoutey hit her second home run of the season in the first inning, and designated player Hannah Carson accounted for the team’s second RBI in the third inning off a double to center field. Berzon had her stuff going early as she threw five innings of shutout softball and retired the first 14 batters she faced to open the game. Boise State threatened in the sixth inning with two hits and brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. Berzon struck out the first batter for her 11th punchout of the night, but back-to-back singles resulted in two runs to even the game, 2-2 through six innings. The score remained deadlocked at two runs for the next three innings as the clubs battled in extras to the 10th frame. Up Next LSU will play Boise State again at 4 p.m. CT on Friday, Feb. 23, and end the day with a 6:30 p.m. CT against Houston to end day two of the Tiger Classic. Head Coach Beth Torina recorded her 500th win at LSU with the victory and became the second coach in program history to reach 500 wins. Torina is now 27 wins away from passing LSU Hall of Fame Coach Yvette Girouard (526-171-1) as the program’s most winningest coach. After shutting down Oklahoma State’s (6-2) batters in four consecutive innings, LSU (8-0) got a leadoff single by Taylor Pleasants in the bottom of the seventh and was pinch-ran for by Maia Townsend. Raeleen Gutierrez moved the runner over to second on a ground out, and Ali Newland drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Townsend and Newland moved into scoring positions on a wild pitch, and McKenzie Redoutey loaded the bags with a walk. Facing an 0-2 count, Carson squared up the pitch that ricocheted off the third baseman’s glove, scoring Townsend and Newland for the club’s second walk-off of the weekend. The Tigers’ walk-off victory marks the first time since 2011 that LSU posted back-to-back walk-off victories, dating back to the first two games of the series against No.1 Alabama in 2011. Carson led a trio of Tigers with two hits, including Pleasants (2-for-3) and Ciara Briggs (2-for-4), and matched Gutierrez with two RBIs in the win. LSU’s Sydney Berzon (3-0) threw her second complete game of the season, registering five strikeouts, and gave up 11 hits and three walks. Oklahoma State’s Lexi Kilfoyl (3-2) was credited the loss after giving up two hits and two runs in 0.2 innings. Kyra Aycock started and had two strikeouts, with five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched, and Ivy Rosenberry threw 4.0 frames with two strikeouts and gave up four hits. For the third consecutive game, the Tigers played from behind, suffering an early deficit to a solo shot by the Cowgirls in the first inning. LSU reeled off five runs in the first two innings, beginning with a two-run shot from Gutierrez in the bottom half of the first, and a three-run second inning featuring RBI doubles from Karli Petty and Briggs, and a sacrifice fly from Danieca Coffey. The Cowgirls responded with a five-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead but were shut out by the LSU defense for the remaining four innings, highlighted by a 5-3 double play with bases loaded in the sixth inning to hold off the threat. Berzon retired the side in the seventh to put the bat in the LSU offense’s hand to seal the game. The LSU defense took NU’s batters out in order for just the second time in the game, and the offense sealed the deal with Gutierrez’s walk-off, marking the club’s third walk-off in three consecutive seasons. It was a dominant weekend to begin the 2024 season as LSU recorded five consecutive shutouts to open a season for the first time since 2000. The LSU pitching staff threw five complete-game shutouts, logging 29 strikeouts and holding opposing batters to a .112 average in 29.0 innings pitched. The staff only relinquished 11 hits and walks during the opening weekend. “The best part is that it's been with five different arms,” said head coach Beth Torina. “Five different pitchers, five different players, and I think if we had any questions about our depth, they were answered for us going into next weekend.” Offensively, the Tigers scored 47 runs and had a .370 batting average behind 40 hits and 44 RBIs, and they accounted for five home runs, including one grand slam from Taylor Pleasants. In the LSU Invitational alone, Pleasants drove in 10 RBIs and had three hits, including two home runs. In the field, Pleasants had a team-high nine assists and eight putouts. “You would be hard-pressed to find a better shortstop in the country,” said Coach Torina. “Taylor [Pleasants] is a massive reason for our success and some of the things she did this weekend took work. Most of these balls would go down as hits in other ballparks because those teams don’t have Taylor Pleasants. There is no question that she and the entire defense are a big reason for our success.” Other offensive standouts include Ali Newland, who batted .500 in the tournament, going 4-of-8 at the plate and added four RBIs and two runs, while Kelley Lynch hit .444 with four hits of her own. Ciara Briggs also had four hits in the tournament, scoring a team-high seven runs and chipping in five RBIs. Game One Raelin Chaffin registered her first win of the season and second shutout of her career in the 7–0 victory over Pittsburgh. Chaffin threw seven strikeouts in the complete-game effort and gave up only three hits and two walks. Newland went 2-for-3 in the batter’s box and had two RBIs. Lynch matched Newland’s 2-for-3 performance at the plate, and Karli Petty (1-for-2) and Pleasants tied for a game-high two RBIs. Pitt’s Kyra Pittman moved to 1-1 on the season after giving up three runs, six hits, and two walks in 3.1 innings. LSU wasted no time scoring runs. Pleasants drove in the first run with a sac fly to center field, and Newland followed with a single up the middle to cross another run in the bottom of the first inning. After two scoreless frames, the Tigers scored on another sac fly off Petty’s bat in the fourth and reeled off four runs in the sixth that consisted of an RBI single from Petty, back-to-back RBI walks for Briggs and Pleasants, and LSU’s third sac fly of the game, courtesy of Newland. LSU’s three sacrifice flies match a team game record, last done against Sam Houston State in February 2020. Game Two Emilee Casanova erased five batters to match her career-best in the 8-0 five-inning game over Memphis. Casanova gave up two hits and walked three batters in her season debut. Her most significant moment in the contest was retiring the side in the top of the fourth with bases loaded and zero outs. Memphis' pitcher Taniyah Brown (0-2) was charged the loss after pitching, allowing four hits and eight runs in 2.2 innings. LSU’s five hits were shared between five batters, and Raeleen Gutierrez led the way with two RBIs. The Tigers started fast by plating three runs in the opening inning. With the bases loaded, Gutierrez brought home two runners with a single up the middle, and McKenzie Redoutey was credited an RBI after grounding out to third to build a 3-0 margin. LSU scored five runs on three hits in the third, highlighted by consecutive RBI singles from Maci Bergeron and Sierra Daniel. Briggs and Newland each walked a run in, and Pleasants notched another RBI after reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Memphis built momentum in the top of the fourth as the first three batters drew walks. However, the LSU defense stood tall by retiring the side, including a swinging strikeout from Casanova as the third out of the frame. Casanova took that momentum into the fifth inning as she struck out two of the final three batters to end the game. The LSU pitching staff allowed four hits against 47 batters faced and held the opposing batters to a .103 batting average. Sophomore Emma Strood earned her first career decision with a complete-game shutout against Memphis, and graduate transfer Kelley Lynch also pitched a complete-game shutout in her first start for LSU. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 32-0 through the first three games. At the dish, LSU totaled 18 hits, 22 RBIs, and scored 24 runs on the tournament's opening day, led by Taylor Pleasants, who paced the team with three hits and seven RBIs with two home runs, including her second career grand slam. “It was important for the team to gain some confidence and momentum, and this is an experienced offense,” said head coach Beth Torina. “I didn't expect them to put up 19 runs, but this was an excellent start.” Other notable offensive contributors include Ciara Briggs, who logged three hits, three RBIs, and scored four runs, and Hannah Carson and Danieca Coffey, who both had three runs batted in. Game One Strood (1-0) turned in her first career complete-game shutout against Memphis after tallying three strikeouts and relinquishing just two hits and three walks in the 19-0 five-inning win. The LSU offense recorded 19 RBIs on 13 hits and featured five Tigers with multi-RBI performances. Pleasants led the way with five RBIs and had two hits. Ali Newland also had two hits and an RBI, while Briggs, Carson, and Coffey each had three ribbies in the game. Releen Gutierrez, who hit her second home run in as many games, also finished the game with two RBIs. The LSU Tigers struck first with an RBI single from Newland at the bottom of the first inning that brought home Coffey, who drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and advanced to third. LSU kept up the scoring in the second inning with four runs on four hits, highlighted by a three-run home run by Coffey, the fourth home run of her career. McKenzie Redoutey started things with a leadoff double in that inning. After the next two batters were retired, Petty walked, and Coffey stepped to the plate and hit a shot to right field to clear the bags. After a pitching change, Briggs reached base on balls, and Pleasants drove her in with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 5-0. The Fighting Tigers poured it on in the third and fourth innings, combining for 14 runs with eight runs in the third and six in the fourth. In that stretch, Guiterrez hit her second home run season, Pleasants drilled her second career grand slam, and both Briggs and Carson accounted for three RBIs. Game Two Lynch mirrored Strood’s two-hit shutout from game one, throwing six strikeouts and giving up two hits and three walks in 7.0 innings of work. Pleasants belted her second home run of the day in the bottom of the first, a two-run shot that brought her RBI total to 10 on the season. LSU crossed an unearned run in the third, and Petty increased the margin to 4-0 with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth. Briggs added the final run in the bottom of the fifth after she singled, stole to second, ran to third due to a wild pitch, and advanced home due to a throwing error. Up Next LSU wraps up the LSU Invitational with another pair of games against Pittsburgh and Memphis at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. I’m excited for the year she’s going to have, and I think this was just step one.” Berzon started where she left off last season in the complete-game shutout. She retired the first nine batters she faced and logged five strikeouts. Berzon relinquished only two hits against the 18 batters she faced and threw 66 pitches with no walks. Raeleen Gutierrez led the way on offense, going 2-for-2 at the plate, including the Tigers’ first home run of the season. Taylor Pleasants increased her hitting streak to seven games dating back to last season and had a game-high three RBIs. The Tigers’ offense scored its first run of the season on Gutierrez's solo shot to right field in the second inning. LSU continued to apply pressure and built a 4-0 lead behind a three-run third inning, highlighted by Redoutey's two-RBI triple and Karli Petty's RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pleasants made her presence known with a three-run RBI triple and came home due to a throwing error from Nicholls, making the score 8-0.
