Da Boot Sports 5/10/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: LSU Staff AUBURN, Ala. – LSU fell to Missouri in eight innings, 2-1, Friday night at Jane B. Moore Field. Despite the tough loss, LSU will enter the 2024 NCAA Tournament with a commendable record of 40-15. Missouri will advance to the SEC Tournament Championship with a record of 43- 14. Pitcher Taylor Pannell (3-1) is gifted the win after not allowing a hit in the closing 1.1 innings. Pitcher Laurin Krings started the game, totaling two strikeouts and allowing no walks, four hits, and one run in 4.2 innings. Pitcher Sydney Berzon (18-8) received the loss despite throwing four strikeouts with no walks. The sophomore allowed three hits in 3.1 innings. Utility pitcher Kelley Lynch started the game but received no decision after dealing five strikeouts with three walks while allowing one run on one hit in 4.0 innings pitched. Four LSU batters logged hits in the contest. Outfielder Ciara Briggs led the way with a 2-for-4 showing and now has 19 multi-hit games this season to lead the Tigers. Third baseman Madyson Manning was one of three LSU Tigers to record a hit and drove in the clubs lone run of the day. Missouri took a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a solo shot from second baseman Maddie Gallagher. After both clubs went out in order in the fourth stanza, outfielder Ali Newland opened the fifth with a leadoff double. Catcher Maci Bergeron laid down the perfect sac bunt to move Newland to third, and Manning’s first career extra-base hit scored Newland to tie the game 1-1. Berzon retired the first six batters she faced and ultimately nine of the first 10 batters entering the eighth inning. However, Berzon and the LSU defense would find themselves in a bases-loaded situation in the eighth inning, in which Gallagher would bring home the winning run and her second RBI of the game for Missouri on a sacrifice fly. Moore Field. In the 14th inning, with the score tied 2-2, designated player Sierra Daniel hit a leadoff single to center field, and outfielder Ciara Briggs followed with a single to left field. First baseman Raeleen Gutierrez hit another single to center field to load the bases with one out, in which Pleasants stepped to the plate and laced a ball to the center field wall to plate the game-winning run. Pleasants now has three walk-off hits this season. “Our team was in this game,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “We were going to be hard to beat no matter how long we stayed out there. Our dugout, bench, and supporters were in this game, and though we didn’t get a break, I don’t think there was a moment where I wasn’t confident that this game wasn’t on our side.” LSU has six walk-off wins this season and holds a 5-1 record in extra-inning games. The Bayou Bengals registered the SEC Tournament’s first walk-off since 2022 (Tennessee def. Mississippi State, 1-0 in 13 innings) and LSU’s last walk-off win in the conference tournament since defeating Texas A&M, 5-4 in 2016. “I think the big thing with this team is that there has been a lot of positives, especially some moments where this team has shown they have as much fight and grit as any team in the country,” said coach Torina. “They have more walk-off wins than I can count, and that is due to their grit and toughness, which is what you want out of a team. I want them to go out and battle their opponents. Today was a great reminder of what kind of team we are, and we have done this throughout the season. Regardless of what happens tomorrow, we will go out and battle and give Tennessee a great game.” LSU has a 39-14 record and eliminated Alabama from the tournament, which is 33-17 this season. Berzon (18-7) earned the win after tossing five strikeouts in a career-high 14.0 innings of work and fired 208 pitches in the complete game victory. Berzon threw 13 consecutive shutout innings after allowing two runs in the first. Overall, Berzon gave up eight hits and six walks. Berzon’s 14.0 innings pitched are an SEC and LSU record for the most innings thrown in an SEC Tournament game. In the LSU Softball record book, Berzon is tied at No. 3 all-time for most innings pitched in a single game with Rachele Fico (2013 at Mississippi State) and Brittany Mack (2011 vs. Alabama). Pitcher Jocelyn Briski (7-5) was charged the loss after allowing a run on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Pitcher Kayla Beaver started the game by logging six strikeouts and allowing two hits, two runs, and four walks in 6.0 innings. LSU turned in its 17th game of the season with double-digit hits, led by Gutierrez’s three hits, which marked her 30th career multi-hit game. Gutierrez also scored one run and set a career-high with 24 putouts. Including the game-winning RBI single, Pleasants had two hits, drew three walks, and turned in a career-high nine assists. Pleasants now ranks No. 2 all-time in program history with 504 career assists. Daniel also had two hits and scored the game-winning run. Catcher Maci Bergeron and outfielders McKenzie Redoutey and Briggs accounted for the other hits. Bergeron added an RBI. Alabama scored on a two-run double by second baseman Kali Heivilin in the first inning. After both teams stayed scoreless for the next four innings, Redoutey wore a pitch to get on base, and Gutierrez hit a single that put runners on the corners with one out. Pleasants drew a walk to load the bases. After Beaver struck out the next batter, she walked Bergeron and hit pinch hitter Kelley Lynch, tying the game 2-2 through six innings. Neither team crossed a run in the seventh inning, forcing extras, and both clubs remained scoreless until the 14th inning. Weil KNOXVILLE, TN - After dropping Friday's game 3-0, LSU looked to bounce back against the Lady Volunteers on Saturday morning and that they did, defeating Tennessee, 1-0 in a very good softball game. Kelley Lynch (6-1), started in the circle for the Tigers and had an outstanding day, pitching the four hit shut out. LSU plated their only run in the top of the 4th inning on a Raeleen Gutierrez solo home run over the right field wall. The contest headed to the 5th with the Tigers ahead, 1-0. The victory evens the series at 1-1, setting up the rubber match on Sunday at 1:00pm CST. The Tigers improve to 35-9 overall and 11-9 in SEC play. LSU is now 33-8 this season, including a 10-8 mark in the SEC. Auburn moves to 23-13-1 and 5-10 in the SEC. Auburn pitcher Shelby Lowe (6-3) earned the win after allowing one run on three hits and two walks and struck out five batters in the complete game. “Shelby Lowe threw a good game against us,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “She was tough on us twice this weekend. I thought she did a good job against us both times she threw. It’s tough when you have a lineup full of left-handers and facing a lefty with good numbers. I think she had given up nine hits to left-handers coming into the weekend. It’s a tough, bad matchup. That’s all you can say.” Pitcher Raelin Chaffin (10-3) is charged with the loss after throwing two strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. Pitcher Sydney Berzon took over for the final 3.1 innings and threw three strikeouts, walked one batter, and allowed one hit. Three LSU batters recorded hits in the game, including first baseman Raeleen Gutierrez, catcher Maci Bergeron, and third baseman Sierra Daniel. Gutierrez drove in the Tiger’s lone run, and Bergeron had LSU’s only extra-base hit of the afternoon. A run-scoring single by Gutierrez in the opening inning gave LSU the early lead. However, Auburn scored three runs on three hits in the fourth, including a two-out, two-run bloop single from third baseman Annabelle Widra, giving the visiting team the 3-1 advantage. Following Auburn’s final run, both ball clubs combined for six total baserunners for the remainder of the game. LSU threatened in the seventh inning with two runners in scoring position and the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs on the board, but a flyout to centerfield ended the game. Up Next LSU will play in-state rival UL Lafayette at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday, April 16, at Tiger Park. Photos Below By: Paige Luper John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
