2/10/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil Da Boot Sports! The LSU softball team will open the 2021 season this weekend as they will host "The Tiger Classic". Head Coach Beth Torina enters her 10th season in Baton Rouge with sky high expectations for her Lady Tigers who are preseason ranked #5 in the nation. Many felt that LSU had the best team in college softball last season. But before they could prove it on the field, the 2020 season came to a screeching halt thanks to the COVID-19 virus. At that time the Tigers were red hot with a 21-3 record. The team has 21 of 23 players returning, along with eight new talented freshman. The entire dynamic pitching staff returns, highlighted by senior Maribeth Gorsuch, junior Shelbi Sunseri and sophomores Ali Kilponen and Shelby Wickershman. This unit lead the nation in 2020 with an ERA of 0.95 in 148 innings. At the plate, LSU is deep and powerful in the lineup from top to bottom. Shortstop Taylor Pleasants batted .383 with four home runs and 21 RBIs as a freshman last season. Sophomore first baseman Georgia Clark batted .429 and center fielder Aliyah Andrews hit .408 with 18 stolen bases in 19 attempts enters her senior season.
