LSU Sports Information By: Brandon Berrio LSU Women's Golfers Lindblad, Stone Set to Tee Off at Palmer Cup ORLANDO – LSU women’s golf sophomores Ingrid Lindblad and Latanna Stone will compete at the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup Dec. 21-23 at Bay Hill Club & Lodge. Stone and Lindblad were announced as selections for the event in March. Stone was one of six committee selections based on her Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings, while Lindblad was one of three committee selections for the international team. “I am excited to watch Latanna and Ingrid play in this year’s Arnold Palmer Cup,” LSU women’s golf coach Garrett Runion said. “Any time you have a player make the Palmer Cup team it’s a great thing but to have two in the same year is really special. “Selfishly, it’s extra special for me as they’re the first two LSU women’s golfers to make the team, and I get to watch them play on my home course I grew up on, Bay Hill. I am really looking forward to seeing these two roommates compete to help their teams win and then return to Baton Rouge to compete on the same team.” Results will be available over the next three days at golfstat.com. The Ryder Cup-style tournament features the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States (12 men, 12 women) against a team of international players (12 men, 12 women). This is the third year that men and women have competed side-by-side at the tournament. Stone, who lives just an hour and a half away from Bay Hill, had one of the best seasons in LSU history during her debut a year ago. In the fall she earned a top-five finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational and also finished 12th at The Ally. Lindblad is coming off a top-30 finish at the 75th United States Women’s Open earlier this month. A native of Sweden, Lindblad is the reigning SEC Player and Freshman of the Year. She led the Tigers in all three tournaments this fall with finishes of second, third and seventh. LSU has had four men's players compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup – Sam Burns (USA, 2017) Luis Gagne (International, 2018 & 2019), Stewart Jolly (USA, 2014), and Zach Wright (USA, 2016). They are the first women to represent LSU at the event. The inaugural Arnold Palmer Cup was staged in Orlando in 1997, making Bay Hill the first venue to host the matches twice. The United States leads the all-time series, 12-10-1, entering this week's event. 12/21/2020

LSU Gymnastics unofficially kicked off their 2021 season with their first time back in the PMAC since their win over Arkansas on February 21, 2020. This third-ranked team put on a show last night and gave a sneak peak at the season to come. This is the eighth-straight season the Tigers are going into a season ranked in the top-five of the preseason poll and the 24th consecutive season ranked in the top-15. This season will be like no other. With the change in coaching, five freshman, seven sophomores who did not get a full season in 2020, and the COVID pandemic, these girls have some hurdles to jump over. "This is going to be a really unique year, and it is imperative to do our best to maintain our routine and traditions that our fans and team are used to," head coach Jay Clark said. "This event is exceptionally important for our team. The ability to get into the arena and acclimate to that space and equipment cannot be overvalued. We know our fans really enjoy it as well so we wanted to make sure there was an opportunity for them to see in person or online." The scene last night was one I have not seen in the 30 years. I have been a part of the LSU Gymnastics program. Even with the free 101 event, there has never been such an empty PMAC for a Tiger Gymnastics meet. That did not stop these girls from flying high, flipping fast, and making a statement that this is the year for greatness. As the night got started, new head coach Jay Clark spoke briefly about how the night would go and what we would see, then proudly handed the mic over to the legend herself, Coach DD Breaux. Coach DD along with the great Mike Smith would cover the commentary for the night and what a phenomenal job they did. They made sure to keep the crowd excited, informed, and cheering on these girls. Having only five of six scores count for each event, it is so important to try and get those 10.0 start values, as many bonus points as possible, and minimal deductions. According to Assistant Coach and Vault Coach Bob Moore, he has seven girls training vaults with 10.0 start values. While we will see Yurchenko Full twisting vaults tonight, many are training one and a half twists and one double twisting Yurchenko. LSU has a stacked vault lineup with three powerhouse freshmen, two dominating sophomores, and a senior like no other. Freshman Elena Arenas started the night off amplifying the crowd as she soared high above the vault taking a hop on the landing. Arenas would be followed by Freshman Chase Brock who also got plenty of amplitude fighting to make that landing count. Sophomore Alyona Shchennikova put a stamp on the mat sticking the landing at third in the lineup. If the “Stick Crown” were here tonight, she would have gotten her crown on this landing. Next in the lineup is freshman Haleigh Bryant and boy is she one to watch this season. With a 10.0 start value, her Pike front half vault is full of amplitude, beautiful lines, and a gorgeous landing. Senior Sarah Edwards would come fourth in the lineup bringing the experience with her. Another 10.0 start value, Edwards vault is as dynamic as her personality. Closing out the vault lineup for the Tigers is the great and powerful Kiya Johnson. Only having half a season as a freshman, this sophomore has so much to bring to this team. Though she did not perform the vault she will be competing this season, it was still a huge sneak peak of what is to come. Over to the uneven bars, coach Jay has a lineup that extends well past the 6 competitors. Tonight the three freshmen, two sophomores, and a senior as the anchor hyped up this crowd for what they will see this 2021 season. Sophomore Kiya Johnson got it started off with hit handstands, beautifully pointed toes, and a powerful double layout dismount. While she did not give us a sneak of the upgrade she has been practicing, we are assured we will see it come January 8th when the Tigers take on Arkansas in their first official meet of the 2021 season. Followed by Johnson were the freshmen trio: Chase Brock, Olivia Dunne, and Haleigh Bryant. All three did a tremendous job swinging with straight lines and hitting those handstands. Bringing up the fifth spot in the lineup was the graceful sophomore Alyona Shchennikova. With hit handstands, straight lines, pointed toes, and just a minor hop on the dismount Alyona’s routine is setting up to be a high scoring routine. It was Senior Sami Durante’s anchor position that stole the spotlight of the night on uneven bars with an unofficial score of 9.95 by the guest judge. This bar team is dynamite! It is with no question that the balance beam is always a make-or-break event. You are speaking of an apparatus that is 4 inches wide, 16 feet long, and 4 feet off the floor. Gymnasts must perform a combination of leaps, turns, dance moves, and tumbling on this miraculous event with poise and grace and absolutely no fear. The Tiger lineup for the 2021 season includes freshman Elena Arenas, a Sophomore Duo with Alyona Shchennikova and Kiya Johnson, and a Senior Trio with Christina Desiderio, Sami Durante, and Bridget Dean. Tonight Desiderio kicked off balance beam with a routine that did not waiver. It was elegant, sharp, and finished with a stuck landing. There was no question that this senior came to make a statement for this Tiger Beam Team this 2021 season and with the help of her teammates who followed in her footsteps it was a powerful statement. The final event of the evening and by far the favorite by the gymnasts and fans, the Floor. Tonight we got a preview of not only the six gymnasts who will be competing this 2021 season but once again, the deep roster that extends past those six. This LSU Tiger team is stacked full on each event with more than the six allowed competitors. Tonight on the floor we got to see Sophomore Alyona Shchennikova, Freshman Elena Arenas, Seniors Olivia Gunter, Christina Desiderio, and Sarah Edwards, Freshman Haleigh Bryant, and anchor Sophomore Kiya Johnson. These girls, along with Senior Bridget Dean, Freshman Sierra Ballard, and Junior Rebecca D’Antonio, rocked the house down with powerful tumbling, leaps showing off their flexibility, and dancing to match their fun and lively personalities. The Floor has been an event LSU has dominated for years resulting in numerous floor titles at all three levels: SEC, Regional, and National. This year will be no different. If anyone questioned how this Tiger team would handle not only a change in coaching, an extensive freshman lineup, and COVID restrictions they got their answer tonight. This Tiger team has one goal in mind and is on a mission to achieving that goal, National Champions. While LSU Gymnastics may not be setting any record breaking attendance numbers as they do every year, they will definitely be breaking some scoring records. This is such a dynamic team. They bring power, grace, and heart which is a recipe for success this 2021 season. Photos By: Brittney Achord
12/15/2020 By: Brittney Achord Da Boot Sports! The 0-3 Lady Tigers hit the court again as they would host the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Monday afternoon. Coming into this contest, LSU has never lost to UL in women's basketball holding a 24-0 record in the series. After tonight's hard fought 62-57 victory, it now stands at 25-0. Senior Faustine Aifuwa led the Tigers on the night with a double-double, scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds, 3 bocks, 1 steal. Sophomore Domonique Davis also played well bringing much needed energy to the team scoring 13 points total, while adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. She's definitely one to watch throughout the rest of the season. Sophomore Tiara Young and Khayla Pointer would each contribute double digit points tonight scoring 10 points each. Below is our 'Da Boot Sports' game breakdown on how the Lady Tigers were able to walk away with a 5-point win.... . 1st QUARTER: The Lady Tigers would take the early lead thanks to Rakell Spencer's basket. Both teams would battle up and down the court in a close 1st quarter of play. The Lady Tigers finish off the quarter with 12 points, shooting 40% from the floor. Huge improvement from their first three contest. LSU would also play solid defense, holding the Cajuns to only 8 points in the period. 12-8 LSU lead. 2nd QUARTER: LSU would begin the 2nd quarter with a 7-0 run with back to back baskets by seniors Faustine Aifuwa and Jailin Cherry, and a three pointer from Khayla Pointer extending the Tigers lead to 19-8. UL would respond with a 6-0 to cut LSU's lead down to five, 19-14 with 4:16 left in the first half. Both teams would continue to take turns making runs at each other, as the Lady Tigers would respond with another quick 7-0 run to go up 26-14 with 3:01 left. For the final three minutes the Lady Cajuns would take control and cut deep into LSU's lead, taking their next turn with a run outscoring the Lady Tigers, 8-2 to end the half. LSU would hold a 28-22 lead at the half. The Lady Tigers, while playing perhaps their best game of the season, would continue to struggle shooting at times. A problem that Coach Nikki Fargas hopes to improve on in the near future. 3rd QUARTER: UL would control the ball to start the 3rd period. Faustine Aifuwa would come up with a nice blocked shot, sending both teams racing up and down the court until Jaymara Mathis would hit a jumper for the Cajuns at the 19:01 mark. Two minutes later, LSU would go on a 8-0 run, extending their lead to 12 points, 36-24 with 6:37 to go in the period. Both teams would begin to trade baskets with each other towards the end of the period, as LSU would go into the final period leading UL, 47-39. 4th QUARTER: Leading by eight to start the 4th period, the Tigers would find themselves beginning to cool down as they would begin to struggle to score. The Ragin’ Cajun’s would begin to close in on the Tiger’s lead. UL would go on a 11-4 run over the next five minutes to pull within a point, 53-52. From here, Faustine Aifuwa would step up huge for her team as she would own the boards and score six of her 15 points on the night over the final four minutes of the game, helping the Lady Tigers seal the 62-57 victory to give LSU their first win of the 2020-21 season. Next up the Lady Tigers will travel to Las Vegas to participate in the "Duel in the Desert".. They will take on Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 19th at 3pm. Then battle Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Dec. 20th at 2pm. Photos By: Brittney Achord Photos below By: LSU/SEC 12/5/2020 By: Mike Lanclos Da Boot Sports! The LSU Lady Tigers were eager to get their home opener started as they welcomed the UCF Lady knights to the PMAC. LSU would start the game slow, but made the score look closer than the game actually was by a final score of 58-48. LSU dropped to 0-3 overall while UCF improved to 2-0. It would not take long before LSU would win the tip, but not long after, a UCF defender would knock the ball out of bounds. Then LSU would jump on the scoreboard with a 3-0 run as senior Awa Trasi would three free throws to get the Lady Tigers on the board. That would be the last point since the 6:34 mark in the first quarter. UCF would then get started as they would go on a 13-0 run. Senior Courtajia Sanders would lead the Knights in the quarter as she would hit a jump shot, layup along with 4 free throws. To assist her in scoring Sophomore Destiny Thomas would add a layup as Junior Diamond Battles would nail 3 free throws to increase the UCF lead. For the quarter LSU would struggle offensively as they would commit 7 turnovers and had 0% from the field in scoring. UCF would also commit 7 turnovers but had a 50% shooting from the field. For the second quarter their offensive struggles would continue, as UCF would eventually push their lead to 22-3 at about the 3:23 mark. LSU's first points in the quarter would not come until Freshman Sharna Ayres would hit a jump shot after Senior Rakell Spencer would add a free throw. UCF would then get some points themselves as Forward Britney Smith led the Lady Knights in scoring as she grabbed 6 points along with Jnaya Walker would toss in 4 points of her own to help the Lady Knights. Also Guard Courtajia would find a way to nail a three pointer. Right before the half Khayla Pointer would get fouled as she fired off a shot just before the halftime buzzer sounded and would only get 1/3 free throws to go down. LSU had plenty of chances, but was squandered by turnovers and missed opportunities as they would find themselves down 30-12 at the half. After the half, LSU would seem to come out strong as Senior Guard Khayla Pointer would hit a long range three point shot to close the gap some would have 8 points for LSU. But after that points for the Lady Tigers were not easy to come by, as Senior Rakell Spencer would hit 2 free throws right before Junior Sarah Shematsi would hit a 3 point bucket of her own. UCF, however would still take what LSU would give them and added points when they needed to. UCF Junior Diamond Battles would lead UCF in scoring for the quarter as she would have 6 free throws. As the time kept ticking away, it seemed like each time LSU scored UCF would find an answer. When the fourth quarter came, the LSU offense finally came to life as they would outscore UCF 23-16. The Lady Tigers Junior guard Sarah Shematsi would jumpstart the team as she would hit 4 three point buckets, something the team desperately needed to get the team back in the game. Senior guard Khayla Pointer would add a 3 pointer of her own to help the score look more respectable than how the game seemed from start to finish. For UCF Senior Courtajia Sanders led her team with 22 points as Junior Brittney Smith added 13 points for the Lady Knights. UCF would take advantage of the paint while scoring 32-6 over LSU. LSU would add pressure in the 3rd quarter, but UCF handled it well enough to do what they needed to do. On the other hand LSU's bench did well as they scored 23-8 over UCF. LSU head coach Nikki Fargas would speak about how the offense was slow to respond. She mentions how the team needs more points than 3 in a quarter because it can be hard to make up eventually. "We have to score more than 3 points in a quarter. I don't think I've ever experienced when we did not make one field goal, so its really hard to make that up. We have to knock these (shots) down, especially when teams are going to run a more base-line type defense and try to keep us out of the paint." The next game for the Tigers will be December 14th when the Lady Tigers host Texas Southern at 5 pm local time. Texas Southern has not played a game as of today. Photos By: LSU/SEC
