Da Boot Sports 3/16/2024 By: Terrill Weil STARKVILLE, MS - The Tigers returned to the diamond on Saturday afternoon looking to bounce back from a tough 10-4 loss to the Bulldogs on Friday, and that they did, defeating Mississippi State, 9-8 in a game they nearly blew. Griffin Herring (1-0) got the win for the Tigers while Nate Ackenhausen earned his second save of the season. “We had a great start to the game by our offense,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “We have talented players that are going through a lot of ‘firsts’ this year, and I’m really proud of them today. We executed what we wanted to do at the plate and kept putting pressure on their pitchers. “We had a lot of pitchers rolling out there for the first time in an environment like this, and we bent but we didn’t break. There’s not going to be an easy game on our schedule for the rest of the season, and I think our players now understand that and were able to execute mentally in a game like today.” LSU began the game like a pissed off team on a mission. Tommy White got it going with a one out solo home run to left field. After Brady Neal was walked, Jared Jones homered down the left field line, giving LSU A 3-0 lead as the game headed to the 2nd inning. The Tigers roared again in the top of the 2nd when Alex Milazzo singled to right field. Mac Bingham then stepped to the plate and launched a two run homer over the left field wall to increase the LSU lead to 5-0. State answered in the bottom of the 2nd. Connor Hujsak led off the inning with a walk. Aaron Downs then singled up the middle advancing Hijsak to third. LSU starting pitcher Gage Jump was charged with a wild pitch which allowed Hijsak to score. The Tigers were able to close out the Bulldogs in the inning with no more damage done. 5-1 LSU as we headed to the 3rd inning. LSU wanted more in the 3rd inning. Jared Jones led off the inning with a walk. Then Hayden Travinski blasted a two run homer to center field. After two quick Tiger outs, Milam, Milazzo and Bingham walked back to back to back, loading the bases. Tommy White would drive in two more RBIs for LSU with a single to right field. LSU now led 9-1 as the game moved to the 4th inning. Mississippi State refused to quit, battling back for three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning when Bryce Chance hit a three run homer off of Gage Jump. After the three run shot, Jay Johnson decided to go with Will Hellmers, who quickly got the Tigers back into the dugout. As the game headed to the 5th inning, LSU now held a 9-4 lead. The surging Bulldogs continued to peck away at the LSU lead, plating two more runs in the bottom of the 5th. Griffin Herring would replace Hellmers in the 5th with two on base with one out. He would surrender the two runs before getting the final out of the inning with the bases loaded. State had now cut the LSU lead to 9-6. State continued to chip away in the bottom of the 7th, while keeping LSU scoreless since the 3rd. The Bulldogs plated two more runs, cutting the lead to one, 9-8. LSU would threaten in the 8th and 9th inning, but couldn't add any insurance runs. Nate Ackenhausen would enter the contest in the 9th inning to get the final three outs for the victory. The Tigers improve to 17-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play... Next up for LSU will be the rubber match of the series with State on Sunday, March 17th. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
