The Tigers bats would finally wake up as they outhit the Bulldogs 7-6, and would win game three, 8-3 in Alex Box Stadium. This was the first SEC win for the Tigers as they would improve to 16-5 overall and 1-2 in the SEC. 2nd ranked Mississippi St. would drop to 16-4 overall and 2-1 in the SEC. It was beautiful weather in Baton Rouge and a jubilant group of LSU faithful satisfied with Sunday's outcome. Mississippi St. got things started right out of the gate in the first inning, after 2 outs, Tanner Allen would get hit by a A.J. Labas pitch to reach first base, then steal safely to second base. Kamren James would step up and hit a hard shot up the middle that would allow Allen to score, giving State a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the Inning, the Tigers would respond. Bulldogs Pitcher Eric Cerantola would struggle as he would give free passes to Tre' Morgan and Brody Drost. Morgan would record his 7th steal of the season, taking second base safely. Dylan Crews would then reach first base on a fielder's choice, with Drost taking the out at second base, while Tre' Morgan would move up to third. A wild pitch would score Morgan, and move Crews to second. Another wild pitch would advance Crews to third. Gavin Dugas would ground out, bringing Crews home giving LSU the lead, 2-1 as we would head to the second inning. The Bulldogs would go down quietly in the second inning as Labas would get the Bulldogs out in order. The Tigers would manage to get a player on base, but a double play would get State out of the inning with no damage done. In the third inning the Bulldogs would get things started with a leadoff double by Scotty Dubrule to right field. After Dubrule would advance to third on a ground out, Bulldogs batter Tanner Allen would hit a deep fly ball to left field. Gavin Dugas would jump up on the wall and snag the ball for the out. However, Dubrule would tag up and score to tie the game 2-2. A.J. Labas would register a strike out to end the inning. Collier Cranford would lead off the bottom of the third with a single to the left side of the field. A ground out, would advance Cranford to second base putting him in scoring position. A pass ball by Bulldogs pitcher Jackson Fristoe would allow Cranford to move to third base. Dylan Crews would step to the plate and line out to end the LSU threat, stranding Cranford on base. Neither team would be able to produce any runs over the next two innings, as both teams would go three up-three down in the fourth and fifth frames. Labas would continue to pitch well, as he would again put the Mississippi State down in order to send us to the bottom of the sixth. Gavin Dugas would give the Tigers their first lead of the weekend series as he would hit a two out, solo homerun over the left field wall to put LSU up 3-2 after six. Ty Floyd would enter the game replacing Labas on the mound to start the seventh and pick up where Labas left off, taking the Bulldog hitters down in order quickly. LSU would get their bats going after the seventh inning stretch as Mitchell Sanford would lace a single up the middle. Cranford would then sacrifice punt Sanford to second. Tre Morgan would then double up the middle, scoring Sanford. Brody Drost would then step to the plate and hit a deep fly ball over the right center field wall for a 2 run homerun, putting LSU up 6-2. Floyd would give allow the Bulldogs to plate a run in the top of the 8th after giving up a couple of hard hit singles, ending his day as Mainieri would go to the bullpen grining in Devin Fontenot. Fonteneot would quickly get the final two outs to end the State's chance at a come back. In the bottom of the 8th inning, LSU would get rolling again as Cade Doughty and Drew Bianco would each earn walks. Jordan Thompson would then rip a double to right center field as the right fielder gave a diving effort, but came up empty missing the ball. Doughty and Bianco would both score to make it 8-3 LSU. Fontenot would get the State batters out three up-three down to end the ball game, giving LSU a 8-3 vicotry. A.J. Labas would earn his first win of the season (1-0), while Fontenot would register his second save on the year. LSU will now travel to Tulane on Tuesday, March 23, first pitch scheduled for 6pm, before traveling to Knoxville to take on 13th ranked Tennessee for the weekend series. LSU is 15-5 overall, 0-2 in conference play, and Mississippi State improved to 16-3 overall, 2-0 in the SEC. The teams will meet in Game 3 of the series at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The contest will be streamed on SEC Network+, and it can be heard on all the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network. The Bulldogs' starting pitcher, Will Bednar (1-0), earned the win, as he worked five shutout innings and allowed three hits, one walk and no runs. Reliever Preston Johnson pitched two scoreless innings before closer Landon Sims worked the final two frames to earn his second save of the year. “Mississippi State has a great pitching staff, and I give them a lot of credit, but we’ve got to find a way to generate some offense. Kids come to LSU because they want to challenge themselves against the best. If you want to play in the big leagues someday, you’ve got to rise up and hit this kind of pitching. It’s hard, but we’ve got to find a way to hit against them.” LSU starter Landon Marceaux (2-1) turned in a brilliant effort, but was charged with the loss. Marceaux allowed two hits, one unearned run and three walks through seven innings while recording three strikeouts. Marceaux has not allowed an earned run in 31.1 consecutive innings, dating back to last season. “It’s disappointing that we couldn’t get a victory for Landon,” Mainieri said. “He’s a terrific pitcher, and hopefully he’ll continue to pitch this way for us all year, and we’ll get better as a team around him.” Mississippi State took advantage of a lead-off walk and an LSU error to score a run in the fifth and break a scoreless tie. Shortstop Lane Forsythe lifted a sacrifice fly to score catcher Logan Tanner with the Bulldogs’ first run. MSU added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by centerfielder Rowdey Jordan, and the Bulldogs extended the lead to 3-0 when DH Luke Hancock walked, moved to third on Tanner’s double and scored on a groundout by first baseman Josh Hatcher. 3/20/2021 By: Mike Lanclos Da Boot Sports BATON ROUGE, LA: The LSU Tigers had a rough night trying to get base hits as they were defeated by Mississippi St. on Friday night, 6-1. Bulldog pitchers Christian MacLeod and Brandon Smith both handcuffed the LSU hitters all night long, as the Tigers would go three up-three down in order in six of their at bats in the contest. Jaden Hill actually pitched a solid ball game for the Tigers through seven innings, only throwing two bad back to back pitches all night. Two pitches that cost him dearly. The game would move along rather quickly through the first four innings as both teams would stay would stay scoreless. In the fifth inning the Bulldogs would get things going as Josh Hatcher would lead off hitting the ball to the deep left field corner, with a standup double. The next batter for the Bulldogs, Brayland Skinner would hit a two run homerun over the right field wall to put State up 2-0. Hill would settle down and get the next three hitters out to get the Tigers out of the inning. LSU would finally answer in the bottom of the sixth, as Cade Doughty, with two outs, was able to reach first base safely on a high pop fly into shallow right field, where Bulldog defenders would miss-communicate and watched the ball hit the ground between two defenders. Doughty would then score as Gavin Dugas would rip a double to right field to make the score 2-1 Mississippi State. It would appear that LSU would finally have woken up their offense. But that would end up only to be an allusion as the struggles would continue on. The Bulldogs would plate another run in the top of the seventh. Logan Tanner would draw a leadoff walk followed by a double to left field by Josh Hatcher that appeared would score Tanner. But in one of the few highlights of the night for the Tigers, Gavin Dugas relay the ball quicly into Jordan Thompson, who would make a perfect throw to Catcher Hayden Travinski. Travinski would had to step to the left side of the plate, stretched out and tagged Tanner out at home plate. Brayland Skinner would kill the LSU surge of energy quickly as he would send a hard single up the middle, scoring Hatcher to make the score, 3-1 Bulldogs. It's here in the top of the 8th inning where Hill would run out of gas, giving up three straight singles to load the bases, before finally getting the first out, then being replaced by Ma'Khail Hilliard. Hilliard would have his hands full with the bases loaded and would surrender a couple of hits that would allow State to plate three more runs. We would head to the 9th inning with LSU now trailing, 6-1. Hilliard would quietly take care of the State hitters in the 9th keeping them from adding anymore insurance runs to their lead. There would be no come back for the Tigers as Bulldogs closer Brandon Smith would have no trouble ending the contest with a three up-three down inning “I thought overall it was a well-played game by both teams,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Both starting pitchers were really good; I thought Jaden competed hard and did a lot of great things, and the relief pitching on both sides was good as well. MacLeod’s got unbelievable numbers, and you can see why. He’s a crafty guy who mixes all three pitches well and keeps hitters off balance. When the wind is blowing in the way it was tonight, it’s hard for your hitters to be confident, because even if you crush a ball you know it’s not going to go anywhere in the wind. But that’s no excuse, we’ve got to hit better, so we’ll turn the page and come out ready for tomorrow.” With the loss LSU falls to 15-4 overall and 0-1 in the SEC, while #2 Mississippi State improves to 15-3 and 1-0 in SEC play. Jaden Hill would get the loss for the contest as his record would fall to 2-2 on the season. Both teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6:30pm at Alex Box Stadium for game two of the series. SLU would come into the contest on a eight game winning streak and would give the Tigers a good ball game. LSU would build an early lead, then fight to hold on to the lead as the bullpen would continue to struggle in relief as we head into the opening of the SEC schedule this weekend. 1st INNING: Will Hellmers would get his regular mid-week start on the mound for the Tigers, and would look a little shaky. First he would give up a lead off single to Evan Keller and hit a batter, but he and the Tigers would get out of the top of the first with no damage done. The Tigers would strike first in the bottom of the first. After Dylan Crews would strike out looking, Tre' Morgan would then draw a walk, then advance to second on a wild pitch. Cade Doughty would fly out to deep center field. Deep enough for Morgan to tag up and advance to third. Gavin Dugas would take a base on balls, setting up Mitchell Sanford at the plate. Sanford would single to left filed to score Morgan. With runners on first and second with two outs, Hayden Travinski would step up and roar a homerun over the left center field wall. The Lions weren't done yet as Preston Faulkner would step up next and send the ball over the left field wall for back to back homers. Dugas would move up to second on the throw. Sanford would then ground out, followed by a walk by Travinski, setting up Cade Beloso at the plate. Beloso would single to left field, scoring Dugas, but Travinski would get tagged out in a run down to end the inning. 4th INNING: With the Tigers now up 5-3, Hellmers would return to the mound for more work. He would start the inning by hitting the lead off batter. However, Hellmers would get the next Lion up to hit into a double play... Next hitter up, Champ Artigues would ground out to first base for a quick top of the 4th inning.... Southeastern would go to the bullpen again, sending Andrew Landry to the mound to face the Tigers. After getting Jordan Thompson to ground out, Landry would walk Arnold and then Crews. Tre' Morgan would go down swinging, brining Cade Doughty up next to bat. There was no doubt when the ball left the bat that it was gone. Doughty blasted his seventh homerun of the season well beyond the left center field wall. The three RBI blast would extend the Tigers lead to 8-3. The Lions would pull Ryan Keeley from the pen to replace a roughed up Landry. A Dugas walk and a Sanford single up the middle would set up runners on first and second for Travinski. Travinski would come up with a big timely hit with a two RBI double to center field. The 4th inning would come to an end with LSU leading 10-3. 5th INNING: Ma'Khail Hilliard would enter the game to replace Hellmers who had a solid outing, finishing with going four innings, allowing five hits, while allowing three runs, with three strikeouts. Hilliard hit the lead off batter, then issue a base on balls. A fly out would move the runners to second and third with only one out. Hilliard would continue to struggle as he would then walk the bases full. No double paly ball would be in the cards, as Preston Faulkner would single to right field plating two runs. Christian Garcia would then fly out to left field allowing Burke to tag up and score from third base. The Tigers would finally register the final out, but the damage was done, as LSU's lead was now cut to 10-6. Ryan Keeley would quickly and quietly take care of the Tigers in the bottom of the 5th inning... 6th INNING: Theo Millas would start the 6th inning on the mound for LSU. The Lions lead off hitter, Nick Ray would hit a double to start things off. After Artigues would line out for out number one, Ray would steal third base safely. Cade Doughty would draw a lead off walk and would be awarded second on a pitchers balk, however the Tigers couldn't move him any further, stranding him on base. 7th INNING: Floyd would return to start the top of the 7th, striking out the Lions lead off hitter. Jacob Burke would step up and end up safely on first base on a fielding error. Burke would then steal second safely. Floyd would then walk Faulkner, as the LSU bullpen woes would continue to sting them like a bee. Floyd would then allow the runners to advance to second and third on a wild pitch, as Southeastern would put themselves in great position to keep chipping away at the Tigers lead. Floyd would come up big with a much needed strike out, sitting down Christian Garcia swinging for out number two. Floyd would strike out the side, sending us to the bottom of the inning with LSU still on top 10-7. LSU is now 13-3 on the season with SEC play beginning next weekend. 1st inning: UTSA goes three up-three down in the top half of the first inning as AJ Labas and the LSU defense would make quick work of the Roadrunners. LSU would come to bat in the bottom half and lead off where they left off last night with the long ball as Dylan Crews would lead off with a solo home run bomb that landed in the Diamond Deck bleachers. After Tre Morgan would ground out before Cade Doughty would continue to swing an impressive bat, as he would blast a home run over the left center field wall to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Tigers would leave two runners stranded as UTSA pitcher Kobe Jaramillo would end the inning with no more damage done. 2nd inning: UTSA came to the plate trailing by two and before you could blink Nick Thornquist would hit one to the deepest part of the ball park to put the Roadrunners on the board, 2-1. Labas would walk the next batter but then would quickly get the next three out to end any other threat. LSU would get a two out walk, then hit by pitch, followed by another walk to load the bases, but LSU couldn't come up with a timely hit as they would leave the bases loaded to end the inning coming up empty on the RBI opportunity. 3rd inning: UTSA would tie the game with one swing after Griffin Paxton would hit a homerun that would clear the right field bleachers. The solo dinger would be all the Roadrunners could muster in the 3rd. LSU would scoreless in the bottom half of the 3rd inning leaving two more runners on base.. 4th inning: Besides a two out double for the Road Runners, Labas would recover to leave him stranded and get out of the inning with no damage done. LSU would go quietly in the bottom half with things all tied at 2-2. 5th inning: The Road Runners get something cooking in the top half of the 5th with back to back hits. But Aj Labas would dig deep down and pitch his way out of the jam to end the threat. The Tigers would retake the lead in the 5th. After a Gavin Dugas walk, Mitchell Sanford would blast his first homerun of the season to right filed to put the Tigers up 4-2. Jordan Thompson would help his case as he would reach safely on a single then come all the way to third after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild throw. Next up Zach Arnold would join the homerun party, sending a two run blast over the left center field wall to extend the Tigers lead to 6-2. The Tigers would keep the fireworks going as Dylan Crews would reach base on a single. Two hitters later Cade Doughty would step up and single to left field to score Crews as we would head to the 6th inning with LSU up 7-2. 6th inning: UTSA would go down quickly, three up-three down in the top half of the 6th after AJ Labas would pitch one of his better innings of the game. Gavin Dugas would begin the inning with a lead off screamer that missed a homerun by inches for a stand up double. Following him in the line up would be Jordan Thompson who would rip a single to left putting runners on the corners with only one out. Jake Wyeth would then extend the Tigers lead after hitting a sacrifice fly out to right, scoring Dugas from third. Arnold would reach on a single moving Thompson to third. Dylan Crews would then come through with a RBI single to increase the Tigers lead to 9-2. 7th inning: Mainieri would decide to turn to the bullpen calling Javen Coleman in to replace AJ Labas after going 6 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. The first pitch thrown by Coleman would be crushed 400 feet by Ian Bailey for a solo homer. The Roadrunners then take advantage of an LSU error to score another run, cutting the lead to 9-4 before LSU could stop the bleeding, as they would leave two runners on base. LSU couldn't manage anything in the bottom of the inning besides a two out double from Dugas, but he would end up stranded on base. 8th inning: UTSA would get a base runner off a infield hit but the Tigers would eventually gun him down trying to take second on a dirt ball. The Roadrunners would go quickly in the top half of the 8th with the lead still 9-4 LSU... LSU would manage two singles in the inning, but would eventually leave runners stranded on the corners We would head to the 9th inning with the Tigers holding a comfortable 9-4 lead. 9th inning: The Roadrunners would take advantage of some poor pitching and an LSU error to scratch two plate two runs. The Rally would continue after Kyle Bergeron would belt a RBI double to cut into the Tigers lead 9-7. UTSA would then add another run after the runner tagged up on a sacrifice fly to center field. Rock would then step to the plate and hit a RBI single to left field to tie things up, 9-9. LSU would go quietly, three up-three down to send us into our second straight extra innings game. 10th inning: Going into extras both coaches agreed on the international tie rule. UTSA would continue to take advantage of more poor pitching from LSU. With runners on the corners, the Roadrunner would score another run on a deep sacrifice fly to right field. UTSA would then rip a double to left center to plate another run. A third run would cross the plate on a fielding error by the Tigers. LSU would finally bring the top of the 10th inning to a halt, but the damage had been done as UTSA would now hold a 12-9 lead going to the bottom of the inning. With Dugas placed on second base with one out, Jordan Thompson would give LSU a huge momentum swing as he would blast a homerun over the left field wall to cut the lead to a one, 12-11. LSU would send pinching hitter Hayden Travenski to the plate. Travenski would electrify the Alex Box Stadium crowd with a deep homerun to center field to tie the game at 12-12. The Tigers wouldn't be able to finish the game in the inning as they would leave the bases loaded. 11th inning: Theo Millas would take the UTSA hitters down quickly and quietly in the top half of the 11th. LSU would begin with the winning runner (Stafford) standing on second base because of international tie rule. Gavin Dugas would setp to the plate to lead off and he would end the game with a walk off base hit, scoring Stafford from second for the 13-12 victory... Final Score: LSU 13, UTSA 12 in 11 Innings........ LSU would blast 6 homeruns in a Gorilla Ball effort that would take every run to beat a really good, scrappy UTSA ball club. AJ Labas pitched well enough to help LSU get the win today going six strong innings. But the bullpen blows a late lead and a win opportunity for Labas. The Tigers get the sweep over UTSA this weekend at the Box having to earn every win coming down to the final play in all three contest. LSU moves to 14-3 on the season and will now shift gears and get ready to welcome in Southeastern Louisiana to the Box on Tuesday night for the final non-conference game before we get SEC play rolling next weekend. “Again, the overarching theme for this game, and the entire weekend, really, was the resiliency of our team,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Even after we gave up the lead in the ninth inning, you could just feel in the dugout that nobody was going to give up." "Theo Millas showed us something today,” Mainieri said. “He retires the side in order and sends his team to the dugout with a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 11th. You give kids an opportunity like that to see how the perform under pressure, and Millas has now done that for us on a couple of occasions. Sometimes you have to have these kinds of games to find out about players and what they’ll do when the lights are bright.” -Theo Millas (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Tigers. -Jordan Thompson lead the Tigers at the plate going 4-5, followed by Dylan Crews going 3-5, & Arnold going 4-6. -LSU hit 6 total homeruns -AJ Labas goes 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, & 7 k's. -LSU ends the game with two errors -LSU out hits UTSA 18-9 TIGERS WIN! TIGERS WIN! 3/14/2021 By: Michael Lanclos Da Boot Sports BATON ROUGE, LA: The LSU Tigers would find themselves were in a dog fight with UT San Antonio on Saturday night, but would manage to somehow pull off a late dramatic, walk off victory in the bottom of the 13th inning at Alex Box Stadium. Freshmen Jordan Thompson would hit a solo homerun to give the Tigers a huge 10-9 win. With the win the Tigers improved to 13-3 while UTSA would drop to 5-5. The Tigers had the lead early in the game that they would shockingly lose late in the contest, forcing them to dig deep, and battle back twice to avoid an upset. UTSA also never quit, as they kept putting pressure on LSU until the Tigers would find the will to win. The game would stay scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd inning as Alex Milazzo would lace a single up the middle and then would score after Dylan Crews would hit a shot off the left field wall for the RBI. Tre Morgan would then take a hit by pitch to reach base. Crews and Morgan would later score off of a 3 run home run to left field by Cade Doughty. At the end of three innings, LSU would lead 4-0. LSU starting pitcher Landon Marceaux pitched a strong 6 innings of scoreless baseball as he would strike out 11 Roadrunner batters as he would remain in command throughout his appearance. In the eighth inning UTSA's Joshua Lamb would hit a single to right field, then would advance to second base on a fielding error. Griffin Paxton would the come through with a single setting up Jonathan Tapia at the plate who would single to right center field scoring Lamb. Kyle Bergeron would single to right field collecting an RBI as Paxton would score. Dylan Rock would then single to center field which would allow Tapia to cross the plate cutting the LSU lead to 4-3. The Roadrunners would then load the bases with two outs. Shane Sirdashney would strike out looking at a pitch from Alex Brady angering UTSA head coach Pat Hallmark who would get tossed from the game after arguing the strikeout. LSU held a slim 4-3 lead after 8 innings. Starting the 9th, UTSA's Jonathan Lamb would reach first base after an error on the LSU infield at third base. Griffin Paxton would then double to left center scoring Lamb. The Tigers would be unable to score in the bottom of the 9th, as we would head to extra innings tied at 4-4. In the 10th inning LSU would need three pitchers, Trent Vietmeier, Jacob Hasty and Michael Fowler to shut down the UTSA offense and get out of the top of the inning, but not before Dylan Rock would take a walk. Austin Ochoa would then hammer a pitch to deep left field for a Roadrunner two run home run. Shane Sirdashney then would score tagging from third base during a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Tapia to make it a 7-4 Roadrunner advantage. In the bottom of the 10th the Tigers would rally back in full force as Mitchell Sanford would lace a single to left field center. Dylan Crews would then take a base on balls. There would be a change in pitching as UTSA would send Reece Easterling to the mound. He would strike out his first batter. But Cade Doughty would step up and hit a three run home run bomb to left center field to tie the game at 7-7. Cade Beloso would then nail the ball to left centerfield, bounce it off the wall for a triple, but would be left stranded to end the inning. After a scoreless 11th inning, we would head to the 12th where LSU pitcher Blake Money would surrender a single to left field to Austin Ochoa. Money would intentionally walk Paxton to try and set up a force out. But UTSA's Jonathan Tapia would hit a double to left field center scoring Paxton and Ochoa to give the Roadrunners the advantage again by a score of 9-7. LSU would come to bat down by 2 runs. Tre' Morgan would lead off roping a double to right center field. After Cade Doughty would strike out swinging, Will Safford would step in as the dh to hit. He would hit into a ground out, but pushing Morgan to 3rd base. . Gavin Dugas would then come up with the big hit, sending the ball to deep left center field for a two run home run scoring Morgan and tying the game at 9-9. In the top of the 13th inning, UTSA would go down quickly. With LSU coming up to bat, UTSA would change pitchers again. This time John Chomko would come to the mound. He would force Zach Arnold into a ground out. Jordan Thompson would step to the plate, and would hit a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left center field to clinch the win for the Tigers in walk off fashion. “This was a crazy game, and let me say first of all that UTSA has an outstanding ball club,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “There are lot of things that happened in the game that cause us concern, but the overarching theme of tonight is the resiliency of our team. They just never gave up, never quit. Even though it looked like we were done a couple of times, our guys kept battling and we got some big swings. If you’re going to spend this much time out at the ballpark, you might as well end up winning.” Blake Money would earn the win as he pitched 2 innings, allowing two runs to register his first win of the season. LSU would use 11 pitchers in the contest as Paul Mainieri would continue to test his bull pen before the start of conference play next weekend. LSU returns Sunday afternoon to play UTSA in 'The Box' at 1:00pm as they will try to sweep the series. 3/13/2021 By: Brittney Achord Da Boot Sports BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers would take game one against UTSA with a 3-1 victory. Five pitchers took the mound for the Tigers on Friday night. Jaden Hill would start and carry the Tigers through the sixth. Aaron George relieved Hill, Devin Fontenot opened for Ka’Khail Hilliard who would be awarded the win for tonight, and Garrett Edwards would come in the game late to close the night out. It was a tough battle as both teams struggled to generate offense through most of the contest. The Tigers have got to find a way to start hitting the baseball again before SEC play begins next weekend. 1st Inning: Battle of the Mound Jaden Hill would show that he was all about rebounding from last week's horrible performance as he would get the Roadrunners in order, three up - three down. The Tigers would have an opportunity to score in the bottom of the inning, unfortunately for the Tigers, Dylan Crews’ 5th steal of the season would be the highlight. Crews would successfully make it to 3rd, but the Tigers struggled to make a bat-to-ball connection, stranding him on base. We would head to the second inning scoreless. 2nd Inning: One, Two, Three Strikes You’re Out! Two outs, a full count, and the crowd clapping in unison, Hill and the Tigers send the Roadrunners back to the dugout once again scoreless. The Tigers would struggle again at the plate. Score remained 0 - 0 going into the 3rd. 3rd Inning: So Defensive! Hill would return to the mound for the Tigers and would relentlessly send the Roadrunners back to the dugout for the third time tonight scoreless. A single, sacrifice bunt, and taking a hit were not enough for the Tigers this inning as they too headed back to the dugout scoreless. 4th Inning: Where is the Wind When You Need It? The Roadrunners would mount a threat in the 4th, but Hill and the Tigers would get out of the inning with UTSA leaving two runners on base. The wind just was just not in the Tigers favor tonight as Cade Beloso and Brody Drost would both hit long balls that would fall within inches of going over the center field wall, as LSU could not get anything going as their hitting struggles would continue on. 5th Inning: The Standoff Determined not to allow any runs, Hill and the Tigers would handle business again in the 5th keeping UTSA scoreless. LSU would blow a scoring opportunity leaving two men on base as the scoreless standoff between the Tigers and the Roadrunners would continue into the 6th inning 6th Inning: Over the Wall to Left Field Landing It Goes! Two up - two down and a fly out to right field would send the Roadrunners right back to the dugout scoreless. As the American Flag lifted just a bit more than it had all night in the cool breeze, the wind was with Cade Doughty as he sent the ball gliding over the left field wall into the Left Field Landing. With the crowd screaming and cheering “T-I-G-E-R-S”, Doughty had put up his fourth home run of the season and the first score of the night. Tigers 1-0 over UTSA. 7th Inning: Standing Ovation After 96 pitches and 6 strikeouts, the crowd gave a standing ovation for Jaden Hill and his seven inning shutout. Coach Mainieri would go to the bullpen sending in Aaron George to finish the inning. George would show no mercy to the Roadrunners, holding them scoreless in the 7th. Six innings of struggle would linger on in the seventh as the Tigers would go three up - three down unable to extend their 1-0 lead. 8th Inning: Let There Be Life Devan Fontenot would start on the mound in the 8th, but would continue his early season struggles with his pitch location. With two outs and two runners on base, Mainieri would bring in Ma’Khali Hilliard. UTSA's Ian Bailey would hit a force field to shortstop. The throw to first was off target. Morgan, stretching as far as he could, dropped the ball allowing Shane Sirdashney to find his way home. Hilliard would shut down the inning sending Leyton Barry back to the dugout swinging. We would now head to the bottom of the 8th all tied up at 1-1. Dylan Crews had the crowd chanting “CREWS” as he hit a fierce single to right field. Morgan kept the energy going as the crowd joined in a game of “GEAUX” “TIGERS” back and forth to each section, taking a hit and advancing to first, sending Crews to 2nd. With two runners on base and no outs, Doughty would hit the ball to third forcing Crews out. A throwing error advanced Doughty to 2nd and Morgan to 3rd. UTSA would then intentionally walked Beloso. The crowd would begin to chant “LSU” as Dugas stepped up to the plate for the Tigers. If there were a roof on Alex Box Stadium it would have blown away as Dugas would rip a single bringing in Morgan and Doughty. In LSU fashion, “Callin Baton Rouge” began to play as the crowd sang along and UTSA changed pitchers. The Tigers now lead 3-1. 9th Inning: Garrett Edwards was brought in to close out the night for the Tigers. With two up - two down, the crowd jumped to their feet, cheering, clapping, stomping as strike three ended the night with a Tiger victory! 3-1! Tigers win! With the win, LSU is now 12-3 on the season. Ma'Khail Hilliard would get the win for the Tigers to improve to 2-0, while Garrett Edwards would record his first save. “It was a great ball game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “UTSA has a very good hitting team, and their pitching was outstanding tonight. We hit a couple of balls hard with runners in scoring position, but they made some very nice defensive plays. We didn’t swing the bats great, but I attribute some of that to UTSA’s pitching. We gave up the lead in the eighth, but we came right back to score the go-ahead runs, and I’m glad we found a way to win.” The Tigers will play UTSA in game two of this weekend's three game series on Saturday evening at 6:30pm in Alex Box Stadium. 3/11/2021 LSU Sports Information By: William Franques NEW ORLEANS, La. – Right-hander Will Hellmers fired five shutout innings Wednesday night, and first baseman Tre’ Morgan and designated hitter Cade Beloso combined for four RBI to lead No. 15 LSU to a 5-0 win over New Orleans at Maestri Field. LSU improved to 11-3 on the year, while UNO dropped to 5-7. The Tigers return to action at 7 p.m. CT Friday when they play host to UT San Antonio in Game 1 of a three-game series at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. In the seventh, Morgan reached on an infield hit, moved to second on a balk, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch.
