 Photo By: LSU sports.net Da Boot Sports 4/30/2024 By: Alexis Persicke BATON ROUGE, LA – The LSU Tigers took on the Grambling Tigers in a Tuesday night contest in the Alex Box Stadium that concluded with a 26-2 victory for LSU. This game came close to breaking a record for total runs scored in a game for the home team Tigers. Grambling went three up three down, then the first run of the game was scored by Braswell in the first inning. He crossed the plate on a stolen base after being walked. Pearson had a double to left field that sent Larson home, ending the inning 2-0 LSU. In the bottom of the second, Grambling made a pitching change to try and hold back LSU. Neal would double, then score on a wild pitch. Milam and Braswell made it on base, followed by a single from Larsen. Tommy White then hit a base clearing double, earning three more runs. Grambling gave away another walk to Jones, then the bases were cleared again. This time by Travinski, with a three run homer with two outs. The inning ended 9-0 Tigers. Grambling continued to make pitching changes, and would do this every inning. They had the illusion of success in the third after quickly shutting down LSU. But, the bottom of the fourth was where the runs started racking up against Grambling. Many substitutions were made in the lineup. Starting with two four pitch walks, Jones and Ethan Frey would each send one in on RBIs. Yet another walk loaded the bases, and Bingham sent two in on a single, then he scored on a wild pitch. The lineup had now made it back around to Jake Brown, who doubled, scoring two runs. White had a two run homer, then Neal had his own 3 runner. Thirteen runs were scored this inning, ten of them earned, which is the most runs scored in an inning by LSU in 14 years. Grambling was able to advance a bit in the fifth. With a double and a home run, they gained their only two runs of the game. LSU did not let this slide, scoring four more runs in the fifth on two run homers from Brown and Zeb Ruddell, bringing the game to its final score. LSU would continue to change pitchers, and Grambling tried their luck on pinch hitters, but they were unable to close the vast gap that LSU had dug around them. Grambling had 9 walks and 23 earned runs against their pitchers. LSU Baseball is now 7-14 in the conference, and 29-17 overall. It was a disappointing loss for Jay Johnson’s crew who could not secure the sweep after winning the tilts on Friday and Saturday night. Auburn torched the Tigers early in the contest with a five run first inning, forcing an early exit for Kade Anderson. A leadoff double from Chris Stanfield got things going for the Tigers before two outs followed. LSU looked primed to escape the early threat, but the wheels fell off the wagon after four hits and a wild pitch aided Auburn in getting five base runners across the plate. The home team could not get a player on base through the first two innings, going down in order. Auburn led 5-0, but struck again in the top of the third with an RBI single from Cade Belyeu, extending the lead. LSU finally got onto the board in the bottom of the third frame with an RBI single from Ashton Larson, scoring Michael Braswell III. The Bayou Bengals got within striking distance in the bottom of the fourth inning. Steven Milam earned a 3-RBI home run after back-to-back base hits from Hayden Travinski and Braswell. Monster Milam brought LSU to within two, 6-4. The fifth inning was quiet before Auburn scored a much needed insurance run in the sixth to go back up by three. Belyeu came across home to make it 7-4. A pitching battle ensued between bullpens, and LSU could only muster one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Auburn held on to the lead and secured the 7-5 victory. Next up, LSU will continue their home stand with a Tuesday night matchup with the Grambling Tigers at Alex Box Stadium at 6:30 pm CST. Geaux Tigers! LSU’s Luke Holman picked up the victory, his seventh of the season, by dealing nine strikeouts over 6 ⅔ innings pitched. He gave up two runs and hits while walking three. In a low-scoring affair, a majority of the damage was done in the third and fourth innings for both squads. Auburn struck first in the top of the third frame. Deric Fabian reached first off a bunt, but a throwing error from LSU allowed the junior infielder to reach scoring position at second base. A fielder’s choice Chris Stanfield sent Fabian across home plate. The Tigers led 1-0. That lead would not last very long as LSU clawed back in the bottom half of the frame. With two outs, Tommy “Tanks” White and Jared “Bear” Jones delivered back-to-back solo home runs to put the Tigers in front, sending the Alex Box crowd into an eruption. Although leading 2-1, LSU just couldn’t hold onto it as the teams headed to the fourth inning. Another day, another Tiger error allowed an Auburn base runner to score. Auburn had runners at second and third before a wild pitch got away, allowing Christian Hall to score, tying the game at two apiece. No more scoring would come until the ninth inning. LSU’s Alex Milazzo got a lead off single to fall in the shallow outfield. He was then advanced to second base after a SAC bunt off the bat of Mac Bingham. Ashton Larson hit a line drive out to right field, but the ball was hit so hard that Milazzo could only advance to third instead of rounding towards home. Tommy White had an unfortunate strikeout when he came to bat, and the Tigers decided to intentionally walk Jared Jones. This sent Josh Pearson to the plate with the bases loaded, and two outs. Pearson delivered in the clutch. He sent a hard hit fly ball sailing over the center fielder’s head. Milazzo touched home plate, and chaos ensued as the Tiger fans whooped and shouted, celebrating the continued winning streak. LSU will look to sweep Auburn on Sunday when they play at 1 p.m. CST. The first two innings were a battle for who could get out of a streak of none on base. Auburn singled in the third to get out of the funk, while LSU went 0 for 3. The third inning is where LSU found their groove. They shut down Auburn once again while on defense, and Tommy White hit a solo home run for LSU’s first hit of the game, and his sixteenth of the season. The inning ended 1-0 Bayou Bengals. Auburn jumped on LSU in the fifth with a single and a stolen base. One of their players fought hard at the plate, being thrown 10 pitches, yet they were still unable to score. LSU didn’t go quiet either, as Travinski copied White with a solo home run. Nothing was earned for Auburn yet again in the sixth. On the mound, Gage Jump continued to keep them from making any progress. LSU gained two singles from Larson and White, but no runs. The game stood at 2-0. The seventh inning was the most eventful inning for LSU. Travinski had a hit, and advanced to third on Braswell’s single. Braswell then stole second. Milazzo doubled, sending two runs across the plate. A valuable hit for his only one of the game. Kling was hit by a pitch and Larson earned another single. LSU ends the inning with three more runs, 5-0. A pitching change is made in the eighth, Christian Little for Jump. Jump threw 101 pitches with six strikeouts and only allowed two hits. Little followed in Jump’s footsteps with three back to back strikeouts. In the final half, Little continued to hold his ground, allowing none on base. He had two 4-3 plays, and ended the game with a backwards K. Auburn went 0 for 3 in six out of nine innings thanks to LSU’s elite pitching during this game. LSU won 5-0. With the victory LSU improves to 27-16 overall and 6-13 in SEC play. The LSU Tigers will continue their series against Auburn on Saturday, April 27th at 6:00 pm in Baton Rouge. Photo By: LSUsports.net Da Boot Sports 4/23/2024 By: Alexis Persicke BATON ROUGE, LA – The Tigers took on the Nicholls Colonels in a Tuesday night game at Alex Box Stadium, coming away with a 9-0 shut out victory in front of 10,465 Tiger fans. The first three innings were not very eventful. Tommy White had two singles, Michael Braswell III had a single, and Jones hit a double throughout these innings. The Tigers also turned a nice 4-6-3 double play while on defense. The fourth inning is where it started to take off for LSU. Pearson hit the first home run of the game, and Braswell had another good at bat with a double down the third base line. Nicholls made a pitching change to try to accommodate LSU's hits, but Paxton Kling walked to load the bases, then Larson followed, walking in a run. Milam also scored on a wild pitch, ending the fourth inning with the Tigers up 3-0. In the fifth, Little was put in to pitch for Kade Anderson, and did not allow any runs. While on offense, Pearson hit a moon shot that almost made it over the fence, but was luckily still safe on second due to an error from Nicholls’s left fielder. Pearson made a defensive highlight in the sixth with an incredible diving catch for the first out. Nicholls once again changed their pitcher to no avail. Milam landed a home run, his second of the year, and his second run of the game. The Tiger defense stayed strong over the last few innings. Braswell made two incredible plays at first base, throwing from the outfield with Jones stretching to his limit to complete both plays. LSU would then exploded offensively. White hit his 14th home run of the year, and Jones did the same, sending the ball incredibly far over the batter’s eye and past the flagpoles. The seventh ended with LSU up, 6-0. To conclude the game, White hit his second home run in a row for three RBIs, taking the Tigers to their winning score of 9-0. Thatcher Hurd was put in to pitch, and finished the ninth inning with 3 strikeouts. Nicholls played six pitchers, but none of them were able to keep the Tigers from advancing. With the win, LSU improves to 26-16. Up next, LSU Baseball will play Auburn in a three game series at home April 26-28 in the Alex Box Stadium. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. LSU improved to 25-16 overall and 5-13 in the SEC, while Missouri dropped to 18-23 overall and 6-12 in conference play. The Tigers return to action at 6:30 p.m. CT Tuesday when they play host to Nicholls in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +. Herring (3-0) entered the game to start the bottom of the fifth inning with the scored tied 2-2, and he blanked Missouri the rest of the way, allowing just one hit with one walk and eight strikeouts. Centerfielder Paxton Kling and shortstop Michael Braswell III each drove in two runs to highlight LSU’s offensive effort. “I’m proud of our team,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “We didn’t get off to a great start, but they stayed with it and played with great competitive character. Griffin’s performance on the back end of the game was outstanding. He’s a team-first player, and in four of our five SEC wins, he did exactly what he did today. “(LSU catcher) Alex Milazzo also played a great game today behind the plate and with his at-bats; he was not going to let our team lose this game.” LSU starting pitcher Nate Ackenhausen worked the first four innings, limiting Missouri to two runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Missouri reliever Bryce Mayer (1-5) was charged with the loss, as he pitched the sixth inning and allowed one run on two hits with two walks and no strikeouts. An RBI grounder by designated hitter Jackson Lovich and an LSU infield error gave Missouri a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. LSU tied the contest in the fifth when centerfielder Kling lined a two-run double, third double of the weekend series. “We really needed that,” Johnson said. “Paxton is getting better, he’s played well over the last couple of weeks. He’s hit a lot of balls hard, and he’s made a really good step in his development for himself and for our team.” Braswell drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to give LSU a 3-2 advantage. Going into the 9th inning trailing 8-4, LSU's comeback fell just short. Missouri got on the board early as they plated two runs in the bottom of the 1st off of LSU starter Luke Holeman. 2-0 Missouri as the contest headed to the 2nd inning. LSU was able to answer in the 2nd. With runners on first and second Michael Braswell III hit a RBI single to left field. 2-1 Missouri as we headed to the bottom of the second. Missouri got the run back in the bottom of the frame to regain their two run lead, 3-1. The home team Tigers extended their lead in the bottom of the 5th. With a runner on first, Trevor Austin doubled to right center field to plate a run. After issuing a base on balls, Holeman was replaced with Aiden Moffett. Moffett struggled surrendering a ground rule double hit that plated another run. With runners on second and third, Danny Corona singled to clear the bases giving Mizzou a 7-1 advantage as the 5th inning mercifully came to an end. Jared Jones stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the 6th and launched a home run over the center field wall. Unfortunately, that would be all the Tigers could muster as they now trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the inning. Hayden Travinski pulled the Tigers closer in the top of the 8th with a two run homer, cutting the lead to 7-4. But Missouri answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer by Brock Daniels. LSU trailed 8-4 heading to the 9th inning. With the loss the Tigers fall to 24-16 overall and 4-13 in the SEC. The series rubber match will be played on Sunday at 2:00pm CST. The game was halted after the seventh inning due to the Southeastern Conference 10-run rule. LSU improved to 24-15 overall, 4-12 in the SEC, while Missouri dropped to 17-22 overall and 5-11 in conference play. The teams meet in Game 2 of the series at 4 p.m. CT Saturday in a contest that will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and streamed on SEC Network +. Jump (3-1) pitched the seven-inning complete game, limiting Missouri to one run on three hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts. He threw 98 pitches in the outing, 65 for strikes. “I was a great performance by Gage and a great win for our team,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “Gage controlled the tempo of the game, and our hitters took great at-bats. We produced a lot of line drives with runners in scoring position, and we controlled the game from the first pitch to the last.” Jump’s 14 strikeouts marked the most by an LSU pitcher since Ty Floyd recorded 17 strikeouts versus Florida last June in the College World Series. Jump’s seven-inning complete game was the first by an LSU pitcher since Paul Skenes posted a seven-inning complete-game win over Mississippi State on May 13, 2023. Missouri starting pitcher Logan Lunceford (1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings with four walks and four strikeouts. With the loss, LSU dropped to 21-12 on the season and 3-9 in conference play, while the Commodores improved to 25-7 on the year and 8-4 in the SEC. The Tigers return to action Tuesday night at The Box to take on McNeese State, which is slated for a 6:30 p.m. CT start. The contest is available to stream on the SEC Network + and can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates. LSU starter Javen Coleman (2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and three strikeouts through 2.0 innings pitched. Vanderbilt starter Carter Holton earned the win, firing 6.0 innings while allowing three runs on six hits. Vanderbilt opened the scoring in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles from designated hitter Camden Kozeal and catcher Alan Espinal. Coleman escaped the first inning without further damage and the Commodores led 1-0. Vanderbilt added to its lead in the second with a two-run homer from Holcomb. He drove in Davis who led off the inning with a double. The Commodores led 3-0 through two innings. In the third inning, Vanderbilt tacked on two more runs to make the score 5-0 after three innings. LSU got on the board in the bottom half of the third courtesy of a Paxton Kling double and a Vanderbilt error on a chopper from second baseman Steven Milam. Kling was awarded home plate on the throwing error from the Vandy shortstop that entered the first base camera well. The Commodores responded with a two-spot in the fourth inning on an RBI single from right fielder Matthew Polk. With a runner on third base, Kozeal scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1. Vanderbilt tallied one in the fifth and three in the sixth to make the score 11-1. LSU first baseman Jared Jones launched his 11th homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Jones drove in pinch runner Alex Milazzo who ran for catcher Hayden Travinski after poking a single to right field. The score was 11-3 after six innings. The teams meet in Game 2 of the series at 7 p.m. Friday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. Friday’s game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and it will be televised on the SEC Network. Thursday’s game was scoreless entering the bottom of the third when LSU rightfielder Josh Pearson led off with a homer, his fifth of the season. The inning was also highlighted by an RBI single from third baseman Tommy White, a two-run single by catcher Brady Neal and an RBI groundout by shortstop Michael Braswell III. The Tigers extended their lead to 9-0 in the fourth when leftfielder Mac Bingham blasted a solo homer – his eighth of the year – and designated hitter Hayden Travinski provided a two-run single. LSU starting pitcher Luke Holman (6-1) earned the win as he worked 5.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. He threw 4.1 perfect innings before allowing a Vanderbilt hitter to reach base. Reliever Griffin Herring provided excellent relief and earned his third save by pitching the final 3.1 innings with no runs, three hits, one walk and six strikeouts. “It was a good performance by our team,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “It starts on the mound -- Luke did a great job again and Griffin came in and picked him up. They combined for 16 strikeouts, so we only had to make 11 defensive plays, and I like those kind of games.” “Offensively, we had a really good inning there in the third and earned a win over a very good pitcher who nearly threw a complete game for Vanderbilt last week.” Vanderbilt starter Greysen Carter (3-1) was charged with the loss, as he surrendered nine runs – seven earned – on seven hits in 3.2 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. The Jaguars improved to 12-13 on the year, while LSU dropped to 20-10. The Tigers return to action at 6 p.m. CT Thursday when they open a three-game series versus Vanderbilt in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and televised on ESPN2. Hawkins’ three-run homer in the second inning and Ollison’s three-run double in the fifth inning highlighted Southern’s 11-hit output, which also included a two-run homer by first baseman Donny Sandifer in the five-run fifth. Southern reliever Antoine Harris (1-2) earned the win, limiting the Tigers to five runs – two earned – on four hits in 4.0 innings with three walks and four strikeouts. “Congratulations to (Southern coach) Chris (Crenshaw) and their program,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “They’ve rattled off several wins in row, and they’re playing good baseball. “We’ve got to change the way we prepare, clearly.
