Da Boot Sports 5/31/2022 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers take on the Kennesaw State Owls on Friday in game two of the Hattiesburg Regional at 7:00pm. But who are these Owls that have earned a spot in the field of 64 in the NCAA baseball tournament? They are located in Kennesaw, Georgia and they are a NCAA Division I college baseball program that competes in the Athletic Sun Conference (ASUN). They began competing in Division I in 2006. This season is only the second time that the Owl's have earned a trip to the NCAA baseball tournament. The other was in 2014 when they finished 40-24, winning the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships. They would win the Tallahassee Regional before being eliminated by the Louisville Cardinals in the Louisville Super Regional. Kennesaw State finished 35-26 in 2022 under first year head coach Ryan Coe. "We are extremely excited," Coe said. "I've been to Southern Miss before, and it's a great atmosphere. This entire Regional is very competitive, and we are looking forward to getting started." The Owls top pitchers are #11 Jack Myers (has a record of 5-3, 65 strikeouts, 49 BB, with an ERA of 4.01)... #31 John Bezdicek (has a record of 5-1, 81 strikeouts, 31 BB, with an ERA of 3.75) and #16 Jared Rine (has a record of 4-0, 34 strikeouts, 24 BB, with an ERA of 5.31 and leads the team in saves with 7).... At the plate KSU is lead by #13 Josh Hatcher (.386, 55 RBIs, 13 HRs)... #25 Donovan Cash (.356, 57 RBIs, 10 HRs)... and #4 Cash Young (.296, 58 RBIs, 17 HRs)... The Owls have a team batting average of .301 and have hit 67 home runs this season. If whoever takes the mound on Friday against the Owls can pitch deep into the game, combined with the return of Jacob Berry and Cade Doughty back into the lineup, the Tigers should come out on top in this one and move into the winners bracket. PREDICTION: LSU 12 - KSU 4 GEAUX TIGERS!

Da Boot Sports 5/30/2022 By: Terrill J. Weil QUOTES FROM LSU COACH JAY JOHNSON – May 29, 2022 after NCAA Tournament bracket announcement On how the SEC Tournament prepares LSU for the NCAA Tournament … “There’s probably very few things you can do that can prepare you better for the postseason than the SEC Tournament, and it was a great exercise for our team. It was a good challenge, especially after going through the 30-game regular-season SEC schedule. To go against teams that are fighting to get into the NCAA Tournament, fighting to host, fighting for seeding, it was a good experience that will benefit from moving forward.” On the effect of Jacob Berry and Cade Doughty returning to the lineup … “They’re two Top 50 draft picks. (The previous LSU staff) recruited Cade here, and I’m glad that they did, he’s a great player. We brought Jacob here, and he’s a great player. I feel that we’re a better team when we have those two guys back in the lineup.” On four teams from the state of Louisiana receiving bids to the NCAA Tournament … “It’s awesome. It’s kind of a random coincidence, I played most of the state of Louisiana baseball programs when I was at Arizona. They came out to Tucson, and we had some really competitive games with them. I’m happy for them, and this is a good baseball state. We’ll be pulling for all of those teams to win their regionals.” On playing an NCAA Regional on the road (LSU has never advanced to the CWS by winning a regional and super regional on the road) … “I love doing things that have never been done before. The selection committee decided we’re playing on the road, we’re not changing their mind now, and I think we’re excited and ready to roll. The success we had in the SEC this season should give our team great confidence. We swept the defending national champion (Mississippi State) on the road, we swept the national runners-up (Vanderbilt) on the road. We won two out of three at Florida, which has been one of the premium programs in college baseball for the last 13, 14 years. If that doesn’t give our team confidence, I don’t know what will. This week will be all about being in the right frame of mind and playing good baseball.” On the team’s outlook for the Hattiesburg Regional … “It’s a great regional field in Hattiesburg and we’re excited to be a part of it. My teams (at Arizona) have gotten to Omaha entirely from the road, and they gotten to Omaha from our home stadium, so I know it can be done both ways. I’m just really excited for this team, to be going to the NCAA Tournament, to have a 38-win regular season while going through a lot of adversity. To do all of that and to play the road schedule that we did, I think it’s a great accomplishment, and it should give our team a lot of confidence going forward. Right now, all that matters is going forward.” On the characteristics of the LSU team … “There are some unique things about our team that make us tough to play. I think (LSU centerfielder) Dylan Crews is the best player in the country. (LSU third baseman) Jacob Berry hit .400 in SEC games this season. I think that makes us incredibly difficult to deal with. For the last month-and-a-half, we just haven’t had everybody in the lineup at the same time due to injuries. I think that speaks to the strength of our team; we’re still standing here, and we were on the cusp of playing a regional at home when we haven’t been fully healthy. I feel good about our team and how they’ll respond to the challenges we’ll face this weekend.” Da Boot Sports 5/30/2022 By: David Penn BATON ROUGE, LA - Today the Fighting Tigers learned that their post season journey will begin in Hattiesburg, MS. LSU will be the second seed in the Hattiesburg regional and face off against the Kennesaw State Owls on Friday night at 6:00pm CT. Host University of Southern Miss will play the Black Knights of Army at 1:00pm. The Hattiesburg regional is paired with the Coral Gables regional where Miami is hosting Ole Miss, Arizona, and Canisius. The Tigers will have a chance to host a super regional at Alex Box Stadium if they win the Hattiesburg regional and Miami fails to win the Coral Gables regional. Coach Jay Johnson is looking forward to getting a pair of Tigers back from injury with the return of Jacob Berry and Cade Doughty to the lineup. “They’re two Top 50 draft picks. (The previous LSU staff) recruited Cade here, and I’m glad that they did, he’s a great player." Johnson said. "We brought Jacob here, and he’s a great player. I feel that we’re a better team when we have those two guys back in the lineup.” Coach Johnson is also aware that LSU has never appeared in the CWS without being a host site. “I love doing things that have never been done before. Said Johnson. "The selection committee decided we’re playing on the road, we’re not changing their mind now, and I think we’re excited and ready to roll. The success we had in the SEC this season should give our team great confidence. We swept the defending national champion (Mississippi State) on the road, we swept the national runners-up (Vanderbilt) on the road. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU (38-20 overall, 17-13 in SEC play) will not host a regional this season after a disappointing 1-2 performance in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers haven't hosted a regional at home since the 2019 season. The 2020 season was lost due to COVID-19... In 2021, LSU traveled to Oregon to play in the Eugene Regional which they won, before falling to Tennessee in the Knoxville Super Regional. LSU will find out their regional destination on Monday as the team will watch the NCAA Baseball Selection Show on ESPN2 at 11:00am in the Champions Club of Alex Box Stadium. The 2022 sixteen regional sites are listed below::
Da Boot Sports 5/29/2022 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques HOOVER, Ala. – Kentucky left-hander Tyler Bosma threw a no-hitter for six innings on Saturday as the Wildcats posted a 7-2 SEC Tournament win over LSU at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Kentucky (33-25) advanced to Saturday night’s semifinal round against Tennessee, while LSU (38-20) was eliminated from the tournament. The Tigers are expected to receive a bid on Monday to play in the 64-team NCAA Tournament. The teams and regional host sites for the tournament will be announced at 11 a.m. CT Monday on ESPN2. “We’re excited to move on to the NCAA Tournament,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “I’m proud of our team for putting ourselves in position to be in the NCAA field. We’ve had a good overall season, but we didn't play well today. We'll be ready to go next Friday (for the first regional game). “I'm not pleased with today, but it's time to move on, so we'll either get ready to play at home or we'll get ready to get on a bus or a plane on Wednesday and go to work.” Bosma (4-3) had not allowed a hit through the first six innings of the game until catcher Tyler McManus tripled in the top of the seventh to score first baseman Tre’ Morgan, who had reached on an error to lead off the frame. McManus scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Gavin Dugas, narrowing Kentucky’s lead to 7-2. Relievers Wyatt Hudepohl and Daniel Harper combined to pitch the final three innings of the game, allowing no runs on one hit. Bosma was charged with two runs – one earned – in his six innings of work, allowing one hit with two walks and 10 strikeouts. The Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning against LSU starter Jacob Hasty (2-1). Second baseman Daniel Harris provided an RBI single and later scored on a Hasty wild pitch. Hasty work just 0.1 inning and was charged with two runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeout. Kentucky extended its lead to 3-0 when first baseman Jacob Plastiak homered against LSU reliever Eric Reyzelman in the bottom of the third. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fourth inning as leftfielder Hunter Jump delivered a sacrifice fly and third baseman Chase Estep contributed an RBI groundout. The Wildcats increased the advantage to 7-0 in the fifth, as rightfielder Adam Fogel homered against reliever Bryce Collins, and Jump lined a run-scoring single off of reliever Trey Shaffer. Da Boot Sports 5/28/2022 By: David Penn HOOVER, AL - The top seeded Tennessee Vols beat the LSU Tigers 5-2 in the late game on Friday night in the SEC Tournament in Hoover. The Vols rolled out SEC pitcher of the year Chase Dollander who worked 6.2 innings for the Vols and limited LSU to two runs on four hits. The loss sends LSU to the losers bracket where the Tigers will rematch the Wildcats from Kentucky for a chance to play Tennessee in the semis tonight. A pair of wins for the Tigers on the day will send LSU to the championship game on Sunday. After beating Kentucky in the opening game the Tigers RPI jumped to 20th and D1 Baseball currently projects that LSU will be the 15th national seed and host a regional at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers could use a little insurance, which they can gain by beating UK for the second time this tournament. Dylan Crews and Drew Bianco were the only base runners LSU was able to move across home plate, doing so in the fifth inning when the Vols defense committed errors on back to back hits by the Tigers. The Tigers were limited to six hits during the game with Crews accounting for two, Bianco, Tre’ Morgan, Gavin Dugas, and Tyler McManus accounting for the other four hits. LSU stranded eight runners over the course of the affair. Ty Floyd got the start for the Bayou Bengals and went 4.2 innings for the Tigers. Floyd surrendered five runs on six hits, walked three, and earned five Ks. Trent Vietmeier pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Tigers and gave up no runs, hits, or walks and struck out three batters. The Tigers will face the Wildcats after the conclusion of the Florida vs. Alabama game and are hoping to make it to the semis to face Tennessee again. A win for the Tigers in the semis would be a single elimination game and would advance LSU to the championship game on Sunday. Da Boot Sports 5/27/2022 By: Terrill J. Weil HOOVER, AL - After several weather delays the Tigers finally got their opportunity to take the field at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium on Thursday in the SEC Tournament night, dominating the Kentucky Wildcats, 11-6. Ma’Khail Hilliard had a strong performance for LSU on the bump as he pitched six innings, giving up only two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Hilliard earned the win and is now 7-1 on the season. Offensively the Tigers picked up where they left off last weekend, staying hot at the plate with 13 hits despite missing both Jacob Berry (broken finger) and Cade Doughty (dislocated left shoulder) to injury. Josh Pearson led the Tigers going 5-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Pearson became the first LSU player to record five hits in an SEC Tournament game as he hit three singles, one double and a two run homer. “It was an unbelievable environment tonight, and I’m really thankful for our fans for coming and I thought it provided us a lot of energy.” Jay Johnson said. “I don't think there's a venue that could better prepare you for what's coming in the postseason. The SEC Tournament is a great, great event." The Wildcats struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. But LSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the third as Tre’ Morgan registered a RBI, grounding out with the sacks loaded. Tyler McManus then ripped a two-run double off of the left field wall. The Tigers plated three more runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 6-2 as Dylan Crews and Josh Pearson would each drive a run in with a couple of singles before Jordan Thompson laid down a sacrifice bunt for an RBI. In the sixth inning, LSU added three more runs before Pearson would blast a two run homer to give LSU an 11-3 lead. It would be his eighth home run of the season. Kentucky would add their final three runs in the top of the eighth inning on a three run home run by Devin Burkes. “Kentucky is playing for a lot right now." Johnson added. "So we knew we were going to get their best shot. So we were able to withstand that, and then settle into the game and just play really mature baseball, which I was really happy to see.” With the victory, LSU improves to 38-18 on the year, while Kentucky falls to 31-25. Next up the #4 seed Tigers will face perhaps their toughest challenge of the season as the will face the #1 ranked, red hot, Tennessee Volunteers on Friday. First pitch is set for 8:00pm CST and the contest will be televised on SEC Network. Jobert, a sophomore from Slidell, La., enjoyed a phenomenal week, hitting .500 (8-for-16) in four games with one double, one triple, five homers and 13 RBI. In the three-game Vanderbilt series, he batted .500 (6-for-12) with one double, one triple, three homers and 10 RBI. In Sunday’s win over Vanderbilt that clinched the No. 4 seed in the SEC Tournament for the Tigers, Jobert tied the LSU single-game record for RBI with nine, as he blasted a grand slam, a three-run homer and a two-run double. He tied the school RBI record originally set on March 5, 1999, by Eric Hendrickson versus Ohio University. Jobert, who also homered twice and drove in three runs in the Tigers’ midweek win over Northwestern State, is second on the LSU club this season in homers (17) and RBI (55). Da Boot Sports 5/21/2022 By: David Penn NASHVILLE, TN - The Tigers' quest to host a regional in front of the LSU faithful at Alex Box Stadium received a huge jolt this weekend after breaking out the brooms to sweep the Vandy Boys in Nashville with a 21-10 victory on Sunday afternoon. LSU put up 42 runs on the Commodores over the course of the three game series, but nothing as emphatic as the 11 run outburst the Bayou Bengals had in the top of the eight inning on Saturday. Every Tiger in the batting order scored during the eight inning with the exception of Josh Stevenson, who laid a pair of sacrifice bunts that moved base runners and scored runs. Sam Dutton started on the bump for the Tigers and retired the first five batters he faced, but the Vandy Boys strung together five runs on five hits in the second inning chasing Dutton for Riley Cooper. Cooper would give up six hits but limited Vandy to just one run while striking out four batters in the three innings he worked. Blake Money came on in relief to earn the last out of the fourth inning but would exit in the sixth after surrendering three runs. Bryce Collins would get the call and go the distance for the Tigers, not allowing any more damage from the Vandy bats and was credited with the win. The Tigers had been scrappy all game long, but blew the game wide open in the eighth inning with an 11 run eruption that Vandy would be unable to recover from. Brayden Jobert crushed two homeruns in the contest, and was a single short of hitting the cycle as he collected nine RBIs. Dylan Crews was mostly held in check but added an exclamation point of his own with a home run in the ninth, his 21st of the season and likely the emphasis needed to collect SEC player of the week honors. Tyler McManus also collected a homerun for LSU in the contest. Crews, Tre’ Morgan, Collier Cranford, and Josh Pearson all scored three runs each for LSU. McManus, Jobert, and Jordan Thompson each scored twice. Morgan was 3-3 at the plate and Jobert was 4-6, highlighting a spectacular day at the plate for the JUCO transfer from Slidell. “We made some small adjustments this week with Brayden, he went to work with it, and it’s really gratifying to see the results,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “It’s allowed him to connect his bat to his strength, and he’s incredibly strong, so it’s been a great week for him.” The Tigers will now shift their focus to the SEC tournament where they will be the four seed and will play the winner of game four on Wednesday evening, a tilt between Auburn and Kentucky. The Tigers are hoping to remain hot in order to become a national seed and host a regional at Alex Box Stadium. With the sweep, the Tigers finish the regular season 37-18 overall, 17-13 in SEC play. Da Boot Sports 5/20/2022 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Centerfielder Dylan Crews launched two homers Friday night to lead LSU to an 8-3 win over Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field. The Tigers improved to 36-18 overall and 16-13 in the SEC, while the Commodores dropped to 35-18 overall and 14-15 in conference play. Friday’s win clinched LSU’s first series victory in Nashville since 2005. The Tigers had lost four straight series at Vanderbilt prior to this weekend.
