Da Boot Sports 12/30/2023 LSU Sports Communications By: LSU Staff BATON ROUGE -- Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow both had double-doubles to power the Tigers past Jacksonville, 110-68, Saturday in the PMAC, closing out the year and the non-conference schedule. “We have to take it up a notch now,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “Everything we do has to be a little bit harder, a little bit more aggressive. The first part of our season is over. We have to evaluate what we think we did in the first part of our season and then we need to flush it. Now you go into the most important part, and that is SEC play.” The Tigers will begin SEC play on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT when they host Missouri on the SEC Network. “I think we have some things to clean up,” Coach Mulkey said. “We have time to prepare for a very good Missouri team. You know what you’re going to get from them. You have to defend in transition and defend the three ball. Hayley Frank is one of the top players in our league and in the country.” Reese had 17 points and 20 rebounds, going 11-14 from the free throw line. It was her seventh 20-rebound game at LSU. She also had 3 assists, 3 steals and a block. Morrow had 20 points and 10 rebounds with 2 steals and 2 blocks for her eighth consecutive double-double Flau’Jae Johnson also had 20 points with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and two blocks. Mikaylah Williams finished with 17 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Aalyah Del Rosario went for 14 points and 7 rebounds with 2 blocks. Hailey Van Lith, in her first game back after missing the previous four, had 11 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Last-Tear Poa had a game-high 7 assists. For the team, LSU came out smoking and made six threes in the first quarter; eight in the game. It was the Tigers’ sixth 100-point game of the season. Edyn Battle led Jacksonville with 17 points followed by Asiana Britt with 11. No Dolphin had over 3 rebounds or two assists. Williams hit LSU’s first shot of the day, a three from the left wing assisted by Reese. Then it was Van Lith hitting her first shot attempt since returning, another three to give the Tigers a 7-0 start as Jacksonville took its first timeout. Williams hit her second three from the right corner off the baseline inbound dish from Van Lith as the Tigers continued their quick start. LSU started 10-0 before the Dolphins got their first bucket, but the Tigers went up 17-2 when Williams fired a cross-court pass to Van Lith on the right wing for her second three of the quarter. She hit a step-back three from the left wing on the next possession to start 3-3. Van Lith then hit Flau’Jae Johnson with a deep pass in transition to the left wing and she nailed it to go up 23-2 as the Dolphins called for another timeout which they came out of to go on a 9-2 run, but the Tigers finished the quarter up, 29-13. Morrow pushed the Tigers past 30 on the first possession of the second quarter. Reese hauled in her 10th rebound within her first 13 minutes on the floor as she approached a double-double. Later in transition she found Williams cutting who pulled up and hit a mid-range jumper as LSU held a 40-23 lead into the media timeout. Johnson hit Last-Tear Poa in transition on the right wing to go up 47-26 for LSU’s seventh three of the opening half. Already with 16 boards, Reese sank two free throws to reach 10 points, all from free throws, for a first half double-double. LSU held Jacksonville without a made field goal through the final three and half minutes of the half to take a 51-33 lead into the break. In the second quarter LSU got into the bonus quickly and subsequently shot 20 free throws, sinking 15 of them for the majority of the Tigers’ points in the quarter. Johnson got the Tigers quickly started with a left corner three on the first possession out for the half. After Van Lith’s third steal she found Angel cutting who made the layup for her first field goal of the game. Williams got the Tigers to 60 after a drive from the left wing, pulling up from six feet. After Jacksonville Coach Special Jennings was called for a technical, Williams went to line having made 31 consecutive free throws, but missed the first to end her streak. Aalyah Del Rosario put LSU over 80 in the third quarter with an and-one to give LSU an 82-52 lead going into the fourth. After Johnson got a layup off an inbound pass from Poa, Del Rosario converted another three-point play to go up 87-52. She got another bucket off an offensive rebound to make her the sixth Tiger in double-figures. The Tigers went over 90 after breaking a press resulting in a wide open layup for Morrow. Coach Jennings was called for another technical and Poa sank both free throws before Williams drove in for a layup to get the Tigers to the century mark. Just getting to come to a historically black college was important. My aunt (played) here and my cousin. I got to come back and do a lot for this community and show little girls that this is something that is possible and was very important to me.” “You saw an arena tonight that sold out a long time ago because of Angel Reese, the national championship, and how we play the game,” Coach Mulkey said. “It was very visible tonight.” Wednesday’s contest marked the first time that a defending women’s NCAA DI National Champion played at an HBCU, per ESPN Stats & Info. Reese dropped 26 points and brought down 6 boards to lead all scorers on 11-15 from the field. She also tied her career-high with 5 steals. Much of the 4,100 announced crowd came out to see Reese make her return to Baltimore for the first sellout in the history of the PEC Arena. “It means everything,” Reese said. “When I was little I wanted my own opportunity. I am at the point where I have stretched a lot of young girls’ and boys’ minds. They know they can be in this position one day. Being able to be a leader and someone they look up to is something that I have embraced. Being from Baltimore, as you know I know, I have a great representation. Coming back here is great. I am the Baltimore Barbie before I am the Bayou Barbie.” Last-Tear Poa was efficient running the point guard position, dishing out a career-high 8 assists with no turnovers. Reese led all scorers with 25 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, second consecutive. Morrow finished with 16 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to make her season total 7 double-doubles, six in a row. “The more they play together, the better they become,” Coach Kim Mulkey said about her post duo. “You better get a body on them because they will be around the goal when the ball is shot. Morrow defends on the perimeter a little bit better than Angel. Then Angel will strip someone on a pick while hedging.” Mikaylah Williams was dry in the first half with no points, but got going in the second half to finish with 14 points and LSU’s only two made threes of the afternoon. Williams added 5 boards and three steals. Flau’Jae Johnson was the only other Tiger to reach double figures as she added 13 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals. The Tigers will head to Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday to take on Coppin State at 5:00 p.m. inside the Physical Education Complex Arena. It will be the first time Angel Reese has played in her hometown since transferring to LSU. “It is going to be a surreal moment, it is my homecoming,” Reese said of the trip to Baltimore. “I think it is sold out right now. My Auntie went to Coppin State. Everybody is going to come out, I don’t know who they will be cheering for, Coppin or LSU, but I’m just excited to be able to see so many people in the community come out to see LSU.” Reese scored 4 points and hauled in 3 rebounds in the first minute and a half of the first quarter to spark a 13-0 LSU run. Northwestern St. got on the board with an Ayres triple just before the first media timeout. Morrow finished the first quarter with 8 boards as the Tigers out-rebounded the Demons 14-8. She has that eternal chip where she knows that she can play at any level.” “She’s one of the top freshmen in the nation and she has a lot to add to her game,” Morrow added about Williams. “She hasn’t reached the peak of her game. She got more rebounds than me tonight and that’s something I’ve been challenging the guards to do.” Freshman Aalyah Del Rosario also played valuable minutes with 7 points and 8 rebounds. Her return comes after announcements that Kateri Poole was not with the squad while losing sophomore forward Sa’Myah Smith for the season with a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. Not only did LSU pick up a statement win, coach Kim Mulkey achieved her 700th career win. Mulkey became the fastest ever to the milestone, having done so in just 813 games. She passes legendary UCONN coach Geno Auriemma, who previously held the record at 822 games. The Tigers trailed early versus the ACC foe and made a triumphant comeback. After the first quarter, Tech led 20-13. LSU’s defense would come alive in the following frame and hold the Hokies to nine second-quarter points. LSU’s star power flipped the script and enabled the team to jump to a 35-29 lead at halftime. Hokie guard Georgia Amoore led all scorers with 25 on the night, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Tigers’ balanced offensive attack. Four of LSU’s starters brought their point total into double digits; freshman Mikaylah Williams headed the Tigers with 20. Reese and Morrow tallied 19 points. LSU got to the line often but struggled from the charity stripe, only managing to shoot 17-26, a 65.4% rate. LSU’s largest lead of the night was 22 points late in the fourth. Virginia Tech attempted to rely on their three-point shooting to keep them in the game, but they could only knock down four shots from the perimeter all night. LSU’s a powerhouse on both sides of the ball, and it showed against a top-ranked opponent. It’s a long season, but the Tigers are in a prime position to make another championship run. The Lady Tigers are back in action on December 10th at home against the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. The game will be at the PMAC at 2:00 pm CST and broadcast on SECN+. Geaux Tigers!
