Da Boot Sports 3/24/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA- The LSU Women’s Basketball team is sweet again! Kim Mulkey’s squad defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 83-56 in the Round of 32 on Sunday in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Angel Reese finished with a 20-point, 11-rebound performance. Flau’jae Johnson led the way for the Tigers with 21 points in the victory. LSU won the opening tip-off, but an empty possession for both teams came about. After a Middle Tennessee shot clock violation, LSU’s Aneesah Morrow and MTSU’s Savannah Wheeler traded back-to-back baskets. Ta’Mia Scott knocked down a big three-point shot to put the Blue Raiders up 7-4, but Angel Reese responded by running downhill and earning herself an and-one opportunity. Reese would miss the FTA, but a fastbreak layup from Flau’jae Johnson and a Mikaylah Williams jumper put LSU in front 10-7, heading to the first official timeout. Jalynn Gregory and Last-Tear Poa exchanged triples before Morrow got in on the action, draining one of her own. As the first quarter clock wound down, a pair of free throws from Johnson and a Wheeler three-pointer closed out the frame with LSU leading 20-15. LSU got a much better start to this game than they had against Rice in the first round, as they only turned the ball over once in the opening quarter. The Tigers and Angel Reese got the second-quarter scoring started with an inside layup through contact. Scott got multiple buckets back for the Raiders through a trey and second-chance lay-in. Wheeler took advantage of her first trip to the charity stripe, sinking both. She made it a two-point deficit. After making a tough layup, Reese used her size to get another chance at a free throw attempt. After another missed free throw, Middle Tennessee made a run to the lead, holding the Tigers to no field goals made over 2:15 plus. MTSU took a 29-26 lead into an official timeout with 3:20 left in the first half. Johnson made two FTA out of the timeout, but Morrow picked up her second foul on the other side, sending Courtney Whitson to the line for MTSU. Whitson converted both, getting the points back. Johnson found a rhythm, scoring again on the offensive end. She made a long midrange attempt for two, pulling LSU to within one. Ta’Mia Scott put the Blue Raiders on her back, scoring off a turnover and then stepping into a wide-open triple. Middle Tennessee would take a six-point lead, 36-30. On LSU’s final possession in the first half, Mikaylah Williams knocked down a tough stepback jumper while being fouled. Williams missed the FTA, sending both teams into the break with the Tigers trailing 36-32. MTSU out-rebounded LSU in the first 20 minutes, 25-18. LSU was not doing themselves any favors, shooting just 57% from the free-throw line. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders began the second half with scores from Anastasiia Boldyreva and Savannah Wheeler, extending their lead to nine. Reese answered with a fast-break layup, making it 41-34 MTSU. An Angel Reese steal led to a Williams jump shot, trimming the lead to five. LSU’s Johnson got a strip from behind off of MTSU’s Wheeler, leading to a pair of free throws from the Georgia native. Mikaylah Williams sent the PMAC crowd into a raucous after hitting a triple to tie things back up at 41 apiece. Flau’jae split a pair of FTA to put LSU in front 42-41. The Tiger lead did not last long as Middle Tennessee’s Scott got a layup to fall, giving the Blue Raiders a one-point advantage. With 4:21 to go in the third quarter, LSU trailed MTSU 43-42. LSU used strong offensive rebounding at the charity stripe to get the lead back on a wide-open look inside the paint from Aneesah Morrow. After a pair of FTM from Wheeler, LSU’s Williams knocked down a two-point shot. A turnover from the Blue Raiders gave the Tigers all the momentum they needed to make a big wave in the round of 32. Who else would step into the spotlight than Flau’jae Johnson? The guard stepped into a massive three-pointer to put the Tigers up five. With the third quarter winding down, MTSU’s Boldyreva fouled out. She is a critical loss for a gritty Middle Tennessee squad, especially with a quarter of basketball still to play. LSU outscored MTSU by 16 in the third frame, taking a ten-point advantage into the fourth quarter of play. Reese earned another easy layup, using her height to her advantage. A shot clock violation from MTSU paired with free throws from Mikaylah Williams sent the PMAC crowd into the loudest frenzy of the contest. Free throws came about for LSU in bunches throughout the fourth quarter as the Tigers ran out to an insurmountable 20-point lead. The LSU Tigers simply dominated the fourth quarter, or the second half, for that matter. For possibly the final time, Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith checked out of the game in front of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center crowd to a resounding applause. The LSU Tigers move onto the Sweet 16, held in Albany, New York, this year. Geaux Tigers! LSU won the opening tip-off, and a Mikaylah Williams mid-range basket started the scoring, putting the Lady Tigers up 2-0. Flau’jae Johnson followed that up with a three-pointer, sending the sold-out PMAC crowd into a frenzy. Sloppy play plagued the Tigers early, giving up four turnovers in the opening five minutes. Hailey Van Lith knocked down a three out of the first official timeout to put the Tigers up 10-6. Flau’jae Johnson showed off her bag of tricks with a nifty layup. The Tigers and Owls displayed a low-scoring affair. Fourteen total turnovers and 18 total points showed on the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter, and LSU led 12-6. Rice answered back with two triples to tie the ballgame at 12 apiece. Although it did not look great, LSU got some much-needed firepower from Williams and Aneesah Morrow. The Tigers had scored on four of five possessions to go up 28-19 but got held to a 2:30+ scoring drought following. Rice made a run of their own before heading into the intermission. The Owls trailed 30-27. LSU went into the break with 13 turnovers but out-rebounding Rice and still had just a three-point lead. The Owls struck first in the second half, an easy layup made it 30-29. The teams exchanged buckets before LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson had the fans out of their seats on a sweet Euro step move. With 4:50 remaining in the third quarter, LSU led 40-38. Out of the official timeout, Mikaylah Williams drove hard to the paint for a basket. On the other end, Angel Reese got a steal before going coast-to-coast for a pair of free throws. The Owls got an easy basket inside the paint off a miscommunication from LSU, but Williams put up a triple, sending the crowd into an eruption. LSU entered the bonus in the third quarter, earning multiple trips to the charity stripe. Pairing an aggressive defensive effort with that mix extended the Tiger lead to 11, heading to the fourth quarter. Angel Reese had a double-double entering the final frame, sitting with 10 points and 17 rebounds. The Owls scored a three-pointer to draw to within eight. With just under seven to play, the Rice Owls entered the bonus of the fourth quarter. Rice split a pair from the stripe to make it a seven-point deficit, but Hailey Van Lith responded with a side-step jumper. Malia Fisher of Rice fouled out with 5:42 to go in the game. Fisher finished with 13 points for the Owls. A second-chance layup from Rice’s Destiny Jackson made it a nine-point game. Aneesah Morrow committed a personal foul on the defensive end, sending the Owls to the free-throw line. They knocked down both, making it 57-50 with 4:30 to play in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Mikaylah Williams nailed a trey, pushing the lead back up to 10. After a split free-throw trip, Last-Tear Poa came up with a clutch layup for the Tigers, but Rice was not ready to quit yet. After back-to-back scores, the Owls had drawn to within six with under two minutes to play. Kim Mulkey called timeout with 1:43 on the game clock, leading 62-56. Out of the 30-second break, Flau’jae Johnson got an open look at a mid-range jumper and nailed it. Rice answered with a layup and caught a break with a traveling violation called on Hailey Van Lith, but the Owls turned the ball over to no avail. The Tigers entered the bonus, sending Poa to the free-throw line for two shots. The junior made both in a “need to have it” moment. After a few more free throw attempts, LSU was able to ice away the ballgame. #14 Rice gave the reigning national champions everything they could handle, but in the end, they fell just short of overcoming the #3-seeded Tigers. LSU survives and advances to the Round of 32. After a staple March Madness upset, they will have a date with #11 Middle Tennessee on Sunday. The Blue Raiders defeated Louisville 71-69 on Friday. Kim Mulkey’s squad emphatically defeated the Kentucky Wildcats behind double-double performances from Aneesah Morrow and Angel Reese. Flau’Jae Johnson tallied 21 points in addition to her seven boards on the day. Hailey Van Lith finished with 15 scoring. In the loss, Kentucky Wildcats forward Ajae Petty secured a double-double of her own with a 13 point, 15 rebound performance. Star forward Angel Reese got the first points of the game for the Tigers before Hailey Van Lith followed it up with four early free throw makes. Aneesah Morrow tallied four points in the opening five minutes played. Kentucky held the Tigers to a 1-8 shooting stretch during the first quarter to keep the contest close. Morrow knocked down a step-back jumper to break the drought. Flau’jae Johnson earned her first game bucket through an acrobatic reverse layup off of a fast break. The stifling defensive effort from LSU held the Wildcats to just nine first-quarter points. If that is not impressive enough, Kentucky finished the opening 10 minutes with as many points as they did turnovers. LSU’s Van Lith and Reese exchanged a streak of layups with one another. The Tiger offense got hot and extended their lead to 31-17 with 4:11 remaining in the opening half. As soon as they heated up, the LSU women got ice cold. Throughout the final 3:28 of the first half, the Tigers got held scoreless as Kentucky drew to within six. The teams headed to the locker rooms with LSU leading 33-27. The Wildcats out-rebounded and outshot the Tigers in the first half, but halftime still provided an electric atmosphere as the seniors were honored. Escorted by their families and the legendary Shaquille O’Neal, Hailey Van Lith and Angel Reese walked to mid-court to meet Coach Mulkey. LSU erupted out of the break, running out to a 13-2 run and going back up by a wide margin. Johnson got flashy off a steal and tossed a behind-the-back pass to the tailing Van Lith for the easy breakaway basket. The Tigers got to their scoring prowess, leading 58-43 with just over a minute to go in the third quarter. Following baskets from each side, both teams headed to the fourth quarter as Kentucky trailed 60-45. Kentucky got the first bucket in the final period, but LSU’s Morrow responded quickly. LSU led 69-53 with 4:02 remaining in the basketball game. Although it was a relatively uneventful fourth quarter, LSU maintained its lead and delivered a win in the regular season finale. Up next, LSU will turn its sights onto the SEC tournament set to be held in Greenville, SC on March 6-10.
