Weil ALBANY, NY - The Lady Tigers returned to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row, finding themselves doing battle with the regions top seed, The Iowa Hawkeyes. LSU hoped to repeat the success they had against the Hawkeyes in last season's national championship contest, when the Ben-Gals defeated Iowa, 102-85 to win the programs first ever national title. But it wasn't meant to be as Caitlin Clark's 41 points was simply too much to overcome as Iowa defeated the Tigers, 94-87. The Tigers finished the game shooting only 39% from the floor. 8-24 from behind the three point arc for 33%. They sank only 11-17 from the free throw line for 65%. Johnson led the Tigers in scoring with 23 points. Williams scored 18 points. Angel Reese finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points with 20 rebounds before fouling out late in the contest. Morrow finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points while grabbing 14 rebounds. Van Lith added 9 points, while Last Tear Poa finished with 6. Iowa got on the board first on a three pointer by Caitlin Clark at the 9:44 mark. Iowa would build a nine point lead, 15-6 with 6:41 left in the first quarter. LSU would go on to outscore the Hawkeyes, 25-10 over the final six minutes of the period to take a 31-26 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter began with both teams trading three point baskets, but Iowa would outscore LSU, 10-5 over the next eight minutes to tie the game at 39-39 with 2:34 left in the first half. Both teams played even, 6-6 over the final two minutes of the period, as we went into the half even at 45-45. We were watching an Elite Eight game that was living up to the hype thus far. LSU shot very well from the floor in the first half, hitting 19-41 for 49%. They hit 4-11 from behind the arc for 36%. The Tigers sank 3-4 free throws for 75%. LSU forced Iowa into six turnovers while committing only five. The Lady Tigers won the first half rebound battle, 23-15. Angel Reese led the team at the break with 13 points. Flau'Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams both had 8 points each. Hailey Van Lith scored 7, Aneesah Morrow added 6, while Last Tear Poa contributed 3 points. LSU would go cold in the third quarter, allowing Iowa to outscore the them, 16-7 over the first six minutes of the period. The Hawkeyes held a 61-52 advantage at the official's timeout with 4:23 left on the clock. The third quarter ended with Iowa leading, 69-58, as LSU continued to struggle to score from the floor. Once again, both teams played even over the first five minutes of the final period, as LSU couldn't gain any ground on the Hawkeyes, trailing, 80-69 at the 5:05 mark. Between Clark's outside shooting and LSU struggling to score in the second half, the Tigers season ended in Albany. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
