LSU vs. top ranked, undefeated South Carolina for the 2023-24 SEC Championship Tournament Championship. In a heated contest South Carolina ended up defeating the Tigers, 79-72. With 2:08 left in the contest, a scuffle between both teams broke out. After everything was cleared up, the officials ejected all the players from both benches for leaving the bench and coming out onto the floor. LSU finished the contest with only five players, falling to the Gamecocks. LSU finished the contest shooting 25-67 for 37%. They hit 6-14 from behind the three point line for 43%. The Tigers finished 16-20 from the free throw line for 80%. LSU suffered through 17 total turnovers to South Carolina's 13. LSU out-rebounded the Cocks, 44-37. Aneesah Morrow lead the Tigers with 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Angel Reese managed another double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Hailey Van Lith scored 14 points. Flau'Jae Johnson added 13. Aalyah Del-Rosario contributed 6 while Janae Kent added 3 and Mikaylah Williams finished with 2. The contest lived up to expectations early on. with furious face paced action from both teams. LSU held a 13-7 lead at the first official's timeout at the 4:17 mark. The Gamecocks outscored LSU, 11-2 during the final four minutes of the period, taking a 18-15 advantage into the second quarter. The Tigers committed eight costly turnovers in the quarter that helped South Carolina take the lead. The two SEC giants continued to battle back and forth in the second period with South Carolina barely outscoring LSU, 18-17 to take a 36-32 lead into the locker room at the halftime break. LSU shot 12-29 from the floor for 41%. They hit 4-7 from behind the arc for 57%. The Tigers need to be better from the free throw line in the second half as they only sank 4-7 in the first half for 57%. The big key stat of the first half was the turnovers with LSU committing 13 while the Gamecocks turned it over 8 times. LSU held a 22-12 edge in rebounds over the first 20 minutes. Aneesah Morrow led the Tigers at the break with 11 points. Flau'Jae Johnson scored 6, Hailey Van Lith added 5 points. South Carolina did a great job of slowing Angel Reese down in the first half, holding her to 4 points and 7 rebounds. Janae Kent scored 3, Mikaylah Williams had 2 and Aalyah Del-Rosario added 1 point. South Carolina started the second half with a quick 6-1 run, forcing Kim Mulkey to call a time out to settle things down. With 8:08 left in the third quarter South Carolina held 42-33 lead. Three minutes later at the period's official's timeout, LSU found themselves trailing by eight, 46-38 at the 4:54 mark. The battle continued with South Carolina leading, 59-53 at the end of the third period. Ten minutes remained to decide a Conference Champion... Trailing by ten, 67-57 with 7:10 left in the game, LSU would go on a 9-0 run to cut the South Carolina lead to 67-66 with 4:36 remaining. LSU fought till the very end but the Gamecocks simply were just a little too much for the Lady Tigers! Kim Mulkey and the Tigers now need to rest up and get ready for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. There's a lot of basketball left to be played.
