Da Boot Sports 3/3/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA- The LSU women’s basketball team showed out in front of a sold-out PMAC crowd with a 77-56 victory on Senior Day. Kim Mulkey’s squad emphatically defeated the Kentucky Wildcats behind double-double performances from Aneesah Morrow and Angel Reese. Flau’Jae Johnson tallied 21 points in addition to her seven boards on the day. Hailey Van Lith finished with 15 scoring. In the loss, Kentucky Wildcats forward Ajae Petty secured a double-double of her own with a 13 point, 15 rebound performance. Star forward Angel Reese got the first points of the game for the Tigers before Hailey Van Lith followed it up with four early free throw makes. Aneesah Morrow tallied four points in the opening five minutes played. Kentucky held the Tigers to a 1-8 shooting stretch during the first quarter to keep the contest close. Morrow knocked down a step-back jumper to break the drought. Flau’jae Johnson earned her first game bucket through an acrobatic reverse layup off of a fast break. The stifling defensive effort from LSU held the Wildcats to just nine first-quarter points. If that is not impressive enough, Kentucky finished the opening 10 minutes with as many points as they did turnovers. LSU’s Van Lith and Reese exchanged a streak of layups with one another. The Tiger offense got hot and extended their lead to 31-17 with 4:11 remaining in the opening half. As soon as they heated up, the LSU women got ice cold. Throughout the final 3:28 of the first half, the Tigers got held scoreless as Kentucky drew to within six. The teams headed to the locker rooms with LSU leading 33-27. The Wildcats out-rebounded and outshot the Tigers in the first half, but halftime still provided an electric atmosphere as the seniors were honored. Escorted by their families and the legendary Shaquille O’Neal, Hailey Van Lith and Angel Reese walked to mid-court to meet Coach Mulkey. LSU erupted out of the break, running out to a 13-2 run and going back up by a wide margin. Johnson got flashy off a steal and tossed a behind-the-back pass to the tailing Van Lith for the easy breakaway basket. The Tigers got to their scoring prowess, leading 58-43 with just over a minute to go in the third quarter. Following baskets from each side, both teams headed to the fourth quarter as Kentucky trailed 60-45. Kentucky got the first bucket in the final period, but LSU’s Morrow responded quickly. LSU led 69-53 with 4:02 remaining in the basketball game. Although it was a relatively uneventful fourth quarter, LSU maintained its lead and delivered a win in the regular season finale. Up next, LSU will turn its sights onto the SEC tournament set to be held in Greenville, SC on March 6-10. LSU has already clinched the 2-seed for the tournament behind only Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks. An impressive performance would help LSU’s chances of moving up in seeding for the 2024 March Madness tournament. As always, Geaux Tigers!
