BATON ROUGE, LA - After a record setting season opener where the Tigers outscored Bellarmine 125-50, the women’s basketball team followed up with another 70 point win over Mississippi Valley State, crossing the 100 point mark in each of their first two games. Coach Kim Mulkey’s squad improves to 2-0 to start the season with a #14 ranking in the polls.
LSU raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first period before finishing the quarter with a 32-9 lead. The Tigers were led by senior Alexis Morris, who had 18 points and 7 assists. Sophomore transfer Angel Reese managed her second double double in as many games with a 16 point 15 rebound performance. Freshman Sa’myah Smith chalked up 7 points and 10 rebounds.
The LSU defense forced 25 turnovers and turned that into 26 points and limited the opposition to just one player scoring in double figures, MSV starting guard Kyriana Jones scored 11 points. After limiting the MSV offense to just 9 first period points, the Devils ended the first half with just 17 points while LSU cruised to halftime with 59 points, leading the Devils 59-17. LSU held MSV to a 22.3 shooting percentage while making 53% of their shots. The Tigers out rebounded the Devils 59-20!
Coach Mulkey talked about the Devils playing zone, “It was a game where I’m glad the other team played zone. We need to play against teams that play zones, and I thought we attacked the zones better late in the game. When the game started, I think we were confused about if they were in a 3-2 or a 2-3 zone and we didn’t have people in the right positions. We’ll get the film out tomorrow and look at ourselves before we look at Western Carolina.”
The Devils had their best quarter in the third period where they put up 15 points, but the Tigers added 34 points to go into the fourth quarter with a 93-32 lead. The final margin of 111-41 marked the second time in program history that LSU opened the season with two 100 point performances.
The Tigers will take on Western Carolina on Sunday 11/13 at the PMAC with a 3:00pm tip time. Western Carolina is 2-0 with the Lady Catamounts earning victories over Bluefield State and Winthrop.
