Weil HOUSTON, TX - The 2nd ranked LSU Tigers were able to come away with a 6-3 victory over the #14 Texas Longhorns Friday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston. “A tip of the hat to our players, they’ve improved a lot over the past week,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “We’re excited about the upward trend of them understanding winning baseball and winning at-bats. We certainly saw that tonight.” After leaving five base runners stranded through the first three innings, the Tigers finally got on the board in the 4th. With the bases loaded and only one out, Michael Braswell III hit a two RBI single to left field, giving LSU the lead. Texas pitcher, Tanner Witt was able to get out of the jam sending the game to the bottom of the 4th with LSU up, 2-0. LSU starter Luke Holman had a great outing, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up no runs on three hits, striking out a career high 12, while only issuing one base on balls. Nate Ackenhausen entered the game in the 6th with a runner on second base with two out and struck out the first hitter he faced to end the inning, keeping the Tigers on top, 2-0. Tommy White extended LSU's advantage with a big swing of the bat, launching a rocket home run over the left center field wall to lead off the 7th inning. The Tigers were not done, as Jared Jones stepped to the plate with runners on the corners with only one out and blasted a three run home run over the right field wall. 6-0 Bayou Bengals. The Longhorns got on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning when Kimble Schuessler hit a lead off home run off of Ackenhausen, cutting the lead to 6-1. Ackenhausen would bounce right back striking out the next three Texas batters to end the 7th. Fidel Ulloa replaced Ackenhausen in the 9th to try and close out the contest for the Tigers. Texas was able to plate two garbage runs before Ulloa ended the game. LSU improves to 9-1 with the win. Next up the Tigers will play UL-Lafayette on Saturday, March 2nd at 7:00pm CST. in Houston at Minute Maid Field.
