Da Boot Sports 5/31/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: William Franques CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Second baseman Steven Milam blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday, lifting LSU to a 4-3 win over Wofford in the opening game of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium. LSU improved to 41-21 on the season, while Wofford dropped to 41-19. The Tigers will play at 4 p.m. CT/5 p.m. ET Saturday against the winner of Friday night’s opening round game between No. 1 seed North Carolina and No. 4 seed Long Island. Wofford will face the loser of Friday’s UNC-LIU contest in an elimination game at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET on Saturday. Milam’s walk-off homer in the ninth inning Friday marked his second dinger of the day, as he also launched a solo shot in the seventh inning. The blast marked Milam’s second walk-off home run in LSU’s past three games – he also accomplished the feat with a 10th-inning, two-run dinger last Saturday in an SEC Tournament semifinal win over South Carolina. “What a game, I'm really proud of our team,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “Wofford is a great team, and we knew that coming in. They did a lot of things right today. Fortunately for us, we have great players. “Another clutch performance by Steven. I know the two home runs really stand out, but he took four great at-bats bats today.” “I wasn't trying to win it in one swing,” Milam said. “That's when you do too much. (Bouchard) threw probably, I think, eight fastballs, so I got my timing down and got a pitch I could drive, and it ended up leaving the park.” LSU reliever Griffin Herring (5-1) was credited with the win after retiring the Terriers in order in the top of the ninth inning. Wofford reliever Alec Bouchard (0-5) was charged with the loss as allowing three runs on three hits in 1.0 inning with no walks and one strikeout. LSU starting pitcher Gage Jump turned in a superb outing, working a career-high 7.1 innings and limiting the Terriers to three runs on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. “Gage was outstanding today,” Johnson said. “Good pitchers find a way to win no matter what. And there's nobody better than him.” Wofford starter Branton Little delivered an effective outing, blanking LSU through the first 5.0 innings and allowing just two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The Terriers struck for two runs in the second inning against Jump to grab a 2-0 lead. Catcher Daniel Jackson led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by rightfielder David Wiley, and scored on first baseman Tyler Hare’s sacrifice fly. Designated hitter Lucas Manning the singled, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by leftfielder Andrew Mannelly to give Wofford a 2-0 advantage. Milam’s solo homer to lead off the seventh – his seventh dinger of the season – narrowed the gap to 2-1; however, Wofford shortstop Jack Renwick led off the eighth with his fifth homer of the year, restoring the Terriers’ two-run lead. LSU shortstop Michael Braswell III led off the eighth with his fourth homer of the year, and one out later, first baseman Jared Jones tied the game by unloading his 27th dinger of the year to right-center field. “It's a great win for our program,” Johnson said. “Great win for the weekend. In postseason baseball, you have to master the art of moving on. So that's what we'll do now.” John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Da Boot Sports 5/26/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil HOOVER, AL - LSU returned to the diamond in Hoover on Sunday afternoon, this time to battle the Tennessee Volunteers for the SEC Championship. The Tennessee pitchers did a great job of keeping the LSU bats under control all day, as the Volunteers would win the tournament title, 4-3. Jared Jones gave LSU the early lead with a solo homer to left field with two outs. 1-0 LSU as we headed to the second inning. Tennessee flexed their muscles in the top of the third. With runners on first and second and two outs, Billy Amick blasted a three run homer over the left field wall. The homer chased Fidel Ulloa, who had replaced starter Nate Ackenhausen earlier in the inning. Christian Little took the bump and quickly got the final out to get LSU back in the dugout. The contest headed to the bottom of the frame with the Volunteers up, 3-1. The Vols extended their lead in the top of the seventh. With two on and two outs, Hunter Ensley singled up the middle to plate a run. 4-0, Vols as we moved to the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers made it interesting in the ninth, scoring two runs, but their tournament run came to an end, 4-3. LSU was just simply overwhelmed by Tennessee pitching throughout the contest. Next up, the Tigers will wait for their destination in the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced on Monday afternoon. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Da Boot Sports 5/25/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil HOOVER, AL - The Tigers return to play in the semi-finals of the SEC Tournament against South Carolina on Saturday as they look to advance to the SEC Championship game, and that they did with another incredible comeback! Steven Milam hit a two run, walk off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning for a 12-11 victory! South Carolina took the early lead as they platted a run in the top of the second inning. 1-0 Gamecocks as we headed to the bottom of the frame. The Gamecocks extended their lead in the top if the third, when Dalton Reeves hit a three run homer off of Aiden Moffett who had just replaced starter Javen Coleman on the bump. 4-0 Cocks as we headed to the fourth inning. The South Carolina bats continued to inflict damage in the top of the fourth. The Gamecocks scored two more runs, chasing Moffett who was replaced by DJ Premeaux. South Carolina was able to plate two more runs before Premeaux was able to get the Tigers back into the dug out. 8-0 Gamecocks as the game headed to the bottom of the frame. LSU refused to roll over and quit. Steven Milam started things off with a double to right filed. After Josh Brown would fly out, Ashton Larson would draw a base on balls. Milazzo popped out for the second out of the inning setting up Michael Braswell III, who singled to left field bringing home Milam. Tommy White was then walked to load the bases. Jared Jones stepped to the plate and was walked to bring home a run, keeping the bases loaded. Josh Pearson then came up with a huge hit as he singled up the middle, scoring Braswell and White and advancing Jones to third base. Hayden Travinski came up with a single down the left field line, scoring Jones and Pearson. The inning came to a close with LSU now only trailing, 8-6. South Carolina was able to extend their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two more runs. 10-6, Gamecocks as we headed to the bottom of the sixth. Jared Jones led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, cutting the deficit to 10-7. The Tigers inched closer to South Carolina in the top of the seventh. Josh Brown got things going with a single and was able to advance all the way to third base on a bad throwing error. Ashton Larson then flied out to center field to bring Brown home. Michael Braswell III stepped to the plate and hit a solo home run over the left center field wall against his former team. As the contest headed to the eighth inning, the score stood at 10-9, Gamecocks. We headed to the bottom of the ninth with the Tigers still trailing 10-9. Last chance for LSU. Do the Tigers have it in them? Ethan Frey would lead off pinch hitting for Larson. Frey would get things started with a double down the left field line. Paxton Kling entered the game to pinch run for Frey. Milazzo layed down a great bunt and was safe due to a throwing error by the third baseman. The throwing error allowed Kling to come around and score to tie the game at 10-10. LSU had a chance to take the win, but left runners on second and third. We headed to extra innings with the score all even at 10-10. In the top of the tenth, with two outs and runners on the corners, South Carolina attempted to steal home. Griffin Herring at the last minute fired the ball to Brady Neal who applied the tag for the final out. A controversial discussion about the play got LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson tossed out of the contest. The umpires decided to call the runner safe, who was tagged out by a mile on a ridiculous call, calling catcher's interference on LSU catcher Brady Neal and a balk on Griffin Herring. One of the worse calls I've EVER seen in a baseball game. The horrible call allowed South Carolina to regain the lead, 11-10. Hayden Travinski started the bottom on the tenth with a lead off walk. Steven Milam then stepped to the plate and launched a two run, walk off home run over the left center field wall. TIGERS WIN! 12-11! John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
