LSU has not had an offensive explosion of this magnitude since Skip Bertman was in the dugout. “That’s really cool to tie the hits record, considering the history of this program,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “Just about everybody that played today got at least three at-bats. All of our players have been working hard, so I’m happy to those guys have success.” Brady Neal led the outburst, going 3-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and a grand slam with 6 RBIs. “I think Brady is one of the best players on our team,” Johnson said, “and I felt that way last year until he had an unfortunate injury. He’s healthy now, which is a good thing for us, and we’re excited about him going forward.” Freshman Steven Milam racked 4 hits on the day that included a double and 3 RBIs. Hayden Travinski and Jake Brown each recorded 3 hits, with Travinski collecting a pair of RBIs. In all, 14 of 15 Tigers recorded a hit, and 12 of 15 batters recorded at least 1 RBI. The LSU offense accounted for 20 singles, 5 doubles, a triple, and Neal’s grand slam. Javen Coleman started on the bump for LSU and pitched 3 innings for the Fighting Tigers, surrendering 2 hit and 2 walks, striking out 3, and giving up no runs to earn his first win of the season. Cam Johnson, Will Hellmers, and Kade Woods each notched an inning of relief, with Aiden Moffet closing out the affair in the seventh inning. For VMI, starter Andrew Jones was charged with loss, giving up 5 runs in the first (3 earned) on 4 hits, 2 walks, and a strikeout. The VMI defense was charged with 4 errors on the day, several seemingly routine fly balls found their way safely to the grass. LSU will host Central Arkansas to close out opening weekend on Monday February 19th with first pitch at 2:00pm CST.
