Da Boot Sports 3/2/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil HOUSTON, TX - The Tigers continue their successful stay in Houston, with a 5-4 victory over UL-Lafayette on Saturday night. LSU would pull out the win in a well played ball game. With the win the Tigers are now 10-1 on the season. “It was a great win, hard-fought, and we knew it would be,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “UL Lafayette has a great team, and I think this win will prove to be valuable for us down the road. We’re very happy to win; the players really did a good job tonight. We were a little slow at the start offensively, but we did what we needed to do to win the game.” The game developed into a great pitching duel over the first four and a half innings between Louisiana's Andrew Herrmann and LSU's Gage Jump, before LSU plated runs in the bottom of the 5th. Jake Brown lead off the 5th inning with a walk. Brown moved to second on a balk by Herrmann. After Alex Milazzo struck out looking, Paxton Kling headed to first base after being walked. Tommy White then singled to right center to load the bases. The Tigers got on the board when Brown was able to come home from third base on a wild pitch. Hayden Travinski then hit a single to left field, scoring Kling and White. Jared Jones stepped to the plate and doubled to left field to score Travinski. The game headed to the 6th inning with LSU up, 4-0. Griffin Herring replaced Jump on the mound to start the 6th inning. Jump had a marvelous outing, pitching five innings with five strikeouts while allowing only one hit. The Rajun Cajuns answered in the 6th on a three run home run off of Herring by Duncan Pastore. The homer chased Herring from the contest. Herring started the inning with back to back strikeouts before giving up back to back singles, then the home run. Jay Johnson went to the bull pen to bring in Gavin Guidry to end the inning. LSU struck for another run in the bottom of the 7th on a solo homer by Hayden Travinski. 5-3, Tigers. Louisiana cut into the LSU lead in the top of the 9th inning when Jose Torres hit a solo home run, his first of the season, to pull the Cajuns to within one, 5-4. The home run came with two outs in the inning. Gage Jump (1-0) got the win for the Tigers while Justin Loer earned the save. The Tigers will play their final game of the Astros Foundation Classic on Sunday, March 3rd against Texas State at 3:00pm CST.
