Da Boot Sports 2/28/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil HOUSTON, TX - LSU began their trip to Houston, Texas meeting the Rice Owls on Wednesday night at Reckling Park. The Owls became the Tigers first victim of the week, as LSU beat Rice, 16-4. The Tigers scored 16 runs on 11 hits. Brady Neal hit two home runs to highlight LSU's offensive attack. Kade Anderson (2-0) got the win for the Tigers. Primeaux, Dutton, Bronzini and Hellmers each made an appearance on the bump to finish off the Owls. “We did good job with plate discipline tonight,” Jay Johnson said. “A lot of free passes, and then we cashed in with two outs and runners in scoring position. If you can do that, you can have a very good night. Our kids are great, they work hard, they’re bought in and will continue to improve.” After a quiet 1st inning, LSU made some noise in the top of the 2nd. Josh Pearson started things with a walk. After Travinski grounded out, Brady Neal drew a base on balls. Jared Jones stepped to the plate and singled to left field to score Pearson, but was thrown out trying to advance to second base. Mac Bingham was then hit by a pitch. Michael Braswell III then walked to load the bases. Paxton Kling singled to left field to plate two more runs for the Tigers. The game headed to the bottom of the 2nd with LSU on top, 3-0. LSU added to their lead in the top of the 3rd. With two outs, Hayden Travinski was hit by a pitch. Brady Neal then launched a two run home run to right center field. With the bases loaded, Paxton Kling was hit by a pitch to bring another run home. An infield single by Steven Milam, scored Bingham from third base. Tommy White joined the party with a two RBI single up the middle to increase the Tigers' lead to 9-0 after two and a half innings. The Owls struck back in the bottom of the frame, plating three runs off of LSU starting pitcher, Kade Anderson. A couple of singles, a hit batter and a couple of errors contributed to the Rice runs. LSU now held a 9-3 lead after three. Bingham began the 5th inning with a jog to first base after being hit by a pitch. Michael Braswell III stepped up next and singled to right field. Bingham and Braswell then pulled off a double steal. Runners on second and third with no outs. Kling would hit a sacrifice fly to bring Bingham home. Milam stepped to the plate and repeated Kling, lining out to left field, allowing Braswell to come home safely. White struck out looking to end the top of the 6th. 11-3, LSU..... DJ Primeaux entered the game to relieve Anderson to start the bottom of the 6th inning. Rice was able to plate another run, pulling to within 11-4. Kade Anderson pitched very well in the contest, going five innings, giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out seven and walking one batter. LSU drove the final nails into the coffin in the top of the 7th. With Paxton Kling on second with one out, Tommy White doubled to right filed, sending Kling home. Two batters later, Travinski would hit an RBI single to left field. With two on and two outs, Brady Neal launched a three run shot over the right field wall, his second homer of the night. Heading to the bottom of the 7th, LSU now held a commanding 16-4 lead. The 2nd ranked Tigers are now 8-1 on the season.
