Da Boot Sports 2/17/2023 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - It was opening day for college baseball on Friday and the #1 ranked LSU Fighting Tigers started the 2023 season with a 10-0 shutout win over the Western Michigan Broncos at a chilly Alex Box Stadium. The shutout victory was led by great pitching and a solid defensive performance by the Tigers. Paul Skenes (1-0) started on the bump for the Tigers and the transfer from the Air Force Academy didn't disappoint going six innings, giving up zero runs, only three hits, while striking out 12 batters and only issuing one base on balls. Chistian Little had a solid outing, working two innings with three strikeouts, while freshman Micah Bucknam did a great job pitching the final inning of the contest. The Tigers wasted little time getting on the board in the bottom first inning. True freshman Paxton Kling lead off and was hit by a pitch. Dylan Crews then singled to left field advancing Kling to second. New comer Tommy White stepped to the plate and drove a single up the middle, scoring Kling and advancing Crews to third base. Tre' Morgan collected his first RBI of the season as his sacrifice fly to left field sent Crews to the plate as LSU led 2-0 after one. LSU plated another run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. True freshman catcher Brady Neal led off with a triple before Ben Nippolt picked up the RBI, grounding out to second base to bring Neal home. The Tigers increased their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth plating five runs. The inning began with back-to-back walks (to Dylan Crews and Josh Pearson) and a hit batter (Tre' Morgan), loading the bases with no outs. Jared Jones doubled to left field scoring Crews and Pearson before Brady Neal flied out to right field scoring Morgan from third. Nippolt registered his second RBI of the game bringing Jones home with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Tigers' final run of the inning came when Jordan Thompson was able to score from third on a pass ball. LSU would plate two more runs in the eighth for the final margin, Game two of the series will be Saturday afternoon at the Box. First pitch is set for 1:30pm CT.
