Da Boot Sports 2/23/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - #2 ranked LSU returned to action on Friday afternoon, dropping their first game of the season, 5-2 to Stony Brook at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field in front of 10,303 Tiger fans. LSU simply had a tough day at the plate, struggling against the Stony Brook pitchers, Eddie Smink and Erik Paulsen, stranding eight men on base. Thatcher Hurd (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers. Stony Brook was able to take the lead in the top of the 2nd inning. LSU starting pitcher Thatcher Hurd gave up back to back singles to begin the inning. Matt Miceli singled to center field to drive in a run. Robert Taylor then hit a RBI double to right field. 2-0 Seawolves as the game headed to the botton of the 2nd. Josh Pearson led off the bottom of the 2nd with a walk. Mac Bingham then singled to third base. Paxton Kling stepped to the plate a hit a ball to deep center field that the outfielder couldn't handle. The error allowed two runs to score for the Tigers to tie the game at 2-2. The Seawolves would plate another run the the 4th on a bases loaded walk to regain the lead, 3-2. Thatcher Hurd was able to get out of the jam without anymore damage done. Griffin Herring replaced Hurd in the 5th inning and did a fantastic job of silencing the Stony Brook bats until the top of the 8th. The Seawolves opened the 8th inning with back to back singles before Herring walked Eric Paulsen to load the bases with no outs. Jay Johnson had seen enough and went to his bullpen, bringing in Samuel Dutton. After striking out Matt Miceli, Dutton faced Robert Taylor who doubled down the left field line to score two more runs for Stony Brook. 5-2 Seawolves. “We did a good job early in the game driving up Smink’s pitch count,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson, “and we were on the verge of getting him out of the game, but we did not do that. I thought the turning point in the game came in the bottom of the third when he retired the side with only nine pitches. Then, our pitcher had to go right back out there, and they scored a run to take the lead. We need to do a better job offensively for our pitchers, and that’s something we’re typically good at, but we didn’t get it done today. We did get some lead-off hitters on later in the game, but we weren’t able to produce multiple good at-bats in a row.” John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior) *John 3;16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
