Da Boot Sports 3/8/2023 By: David Penn BATON ROUGE, LA - The #1 ranked LSU Tigers, now 12-1, continue to look impressive on the mound and on offense. LSU Coach Jay Johnson said “It was a really complete win. It started on the mound, (LSU starting pitcher) Christian Little did a great job, along with Will Hellmers and Garrett Edwards in relief. We knew Lamar would put the ball in play a lot, and I thought we were outstanding on defense. (Third baseman) Ben Nippolt and (shortstop) Jordan Thompson were a big story in this game in how well they defended the left side of the infield. Offensively, I thought we had a great set of quality at-bats. We walked eight times, we were hit with a few pitches, and we really cashed in on those with runners in scoring position. I’m really pleased with the performance all the way around.” Christian Little started on the bump for the Tigers and improved his record to 2-0. Little limited Lamar (10-3) to 1 run on 4 hits with 3 Ks and 1 walk. Will Helmers would enter in relief in the fifth inning, giving up 1 run on 1 hit, earning 3 Ks. Garrett Edwards closed the affair from the mound, going the final 3.2 innings. Edwards allowed no runs, 2 hits, and fanned two batters. Tommy White led the LSU offense, going 2-5 from the plate with a double and a 387 yard bomb over the right field bench. White notched his 3rd homer of the season and collected 4 RBIs, the homerun in the second inning gave the Tigers a 6-1 advantage. Freshman Paxton Kling also went 2-5 from the plate and blasted his second homerun of the season. The Tigers drew 8 walks in the game and were hit by pitch 3 times, All-American Dylan Crews drew 3 bases on balls. LSU has won its last seven games and will host Samford at Alex Box Stadium this weekend. Samford will come to Baton Rouge with an 11-6 record, the Friday and Saturday night games will begin at 6:30 and the Sunday tilt will begin at 1:00.
