We had Constance Quinn in the huddle tonight to get them going. The alums were out tonight, so there was a lot of buzz around the park. It was great to get the series started that way.” Berzon tossed a gem in the opener to improve to 15-2. The two-time All-American fanned five batters and allowed four hits and no walks. Berzon’s fifth shutout this season is a new career high as she ups her total to 12 career shutouts. LSU’s hitting from the final two innings Tuesday night at McNeese rolled over to game one as the home team outhit Bama 11-4 and had four batters with two hits, including Danieca Coffey (2-for-2, 2 runs), Jalia Lassiter (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI), McKenzie Redoutey (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Savanna Bedell (2-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI). Lassiter capped the game with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Alabama’s starting pitcher Emily Winstead (7-3) picked up the loss. She had one strikeout and gave up three runs on four hits in 0.2 innings. LSU started fast with three runs on five hits in the first frame to take an early 3-0 lead. Two batters in, the Tigers were on the scoreboard thanks to a leadoff double by Coffey and an RBI single by Lassiter. Redoutey hit a one-out single up the middle to score Lassiter, and Bedell singled through the left side to plate Maci Bergeron who also singled through the left side. “When we start fast, it changes how we do everything,” said Coach Torina. “It changes how she [Sydney Berzon] can attack hitters. She gets to be so much more aggressive. If you give a pitcher like Sydney Berzon an advantage like that, you are going to have a good night. She is so talented; she can capitalize on that and feel confident. This team has been incredible about scoring first all season long.” After a couple of one-out singles for LSU in the third inning, Maddox McKee hit a run-scoring single, Bedell scored on a throwing error, and heads-up base running brought McKee home, extending the Tigers’ lead to 6-0. LSU put the exclamation point on the game in the fourth inning thanks to another leadoff hit by Coffey and Lassiter’s blast to left field to increase the margin to 8-0. Up Next Game two of the series will air on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 5. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." LSU (32-4) rallied from a late 2-0 deficit and put up six runs in the sixth and seventh innings behind 13 hits, highlighted by multi-run blasts by infielders Tori Edwards, Maddox McKee and outfielder McKenzie Redoutey to spoil what would have been an upset for McNeese (23-16). Edwards hit her 13th home run of the season and now has 53 RBI, which ranks No. 3 among freshmen all-time in program history in both categories. McKee’s insurance shot was the first of her collegiate career, and Redoutey’s two-run homer in the seventh was her second of the season. Eight of LSU’s starters registered a hit, including multi-hit games from infielder Avery Hodge (3-for-4), Redoutey (2-for-2), McKee (2-for-4) and outfielders Jadyn Laneaux (2-for-4) and Jalia Lassiter (2-for-4). Edwards drove in a game-high four RBI. LSU has turned in 16 games with 10 or more hits and 15 games with 10 or more runs this season. On Tuesday night, the Tigers scored the most runs in a game when held scoreless through five innings. The previous high was 10 runs against Troy on March 4, 2022. Jayden Heavener (10-2) tossed her ninth complete game of the season, had eight punchouts, and surrendered two runs on three hits and nine walks. McNeese’s starting pitcher, Kadence Williams, receives the loss after throwing 5.1 solid innings but gave up three runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts. McNeese held LSU scoreless through the first five innings and struggled offensively as Williams and the Cowgirl defense retired 12 of the first 13 batters faced through four stanzas. In the top of the fifth inning, Redoutey was hit by a pitch, and designated player Savanna Bedell broke up the no-hitter with a single to center field. An error by McNeese’s outfielder put Bedell and Redoutey in scoring position with no outs, but the Cowgirls turned a double play and retired the next batter to end the threat. In the bottom of the fifth, McNeese loaded the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch with two outs, and the Cowgirls broke through with a two-run single down the right field line off Rylie Bouvier’s bat, giving McNeese a 2-0 lead. The Tigers exploded in the sixth inning with six runs on seven hits. Hodge led off the inning with a single up the middle, and two batters later, Lassiter singled to center field. Another error by the outfielder brought Hodge home for The Tigers’ first run. Catcher Maci Bergeron drew a walk, and Edwards tagged a pitch over the left-field wall to give LSU a 4-2 lead. After Redoutey singled, McKee went yard to cap the inning, and LSU took a 6-2 advantage into the seventh inning. LSU added six more runs in the top of the seventh to build a 12-2 lead, featuring a sac fly for Edwards, a two-run home run by Redoutey, RBI doubles by Laneaux and Hodge, and a run-scoring single by infielder Danieca Coffey. The Cowgirls loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Heavener tallied her ninth strikeout to make the game final. LSU (31-3, 6-3 SEC) falls in consecutive games for the first time this season, and South Carolina (26-7, 3-5 SEC) picks up its first SEC series win over LSU since 2017. In the first game, the Gamecocks capitalized on four early and uncharacteristic LSU errors and scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to even the series with a 5-3 victory. In the second game, although LSU outhit SC 6-5, the Tigers were held to a season-low one run in the 4-1 series-deciding game. Designated player Savanna Bedell (.500) had a team-high three hits, two runs, and two RBI, including her first career home run in the first game. Infielder Tori Edwards (2-for-6) and outfielders Jadyn Laneaux (2-for-6) and Jalia Lassiter (2-for-7) rounded out LSU’s multi-hitters for the day. Game 1 LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon (14-2) threw all 8.0 innings, registered four strikeouts, and allowed four earned runs, six hits, and four walks in the loss. South Carolina’s pitcher Sam Gress (8-3) earned the complete game victory. Gress tallied seven strikeouts while rendering seven hits, three runs, and three walks. Bedell went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Tigers, including her first career home run in the fifth frame, and scored two runs. Edwards was 2-for-4 at the dish, and infielder Danieca Coffey was 1-for-2 and had a team-high two RBI. South Carolina capitalized on two LSU defensive miscues and scored one run in the first inning. After a scoreless second stanza, Bedell led off the third with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Coffey singled over to the shortstop, and Bedell came home from second base to tie the game, 1-1 after three. In the fifth, Bedell went opposite field for a solo shot that gave LSU a 2-1 lead. South Carolina pushed back, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to regain a 3-2 advantage, but LSU responded in the bottom half inning to force extras. Infielder Sierra Daniel drew a leadoff walk, and Bedell registered her third hit of the game to put runners on the corners. Coffey tied the game with a sacrifice fly two batters later as the teams went into extras knotted at three runs. For the second consecutive inning, the Gamecocks scored two runs to grab a 5-3 margin that would hold. SC’s infielder Brooke Blankenship single down the right field line to give the visiting the go-ahead run. The Tigers had one runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Edwards’ stand-up double, but a pair of flyouts ended the game for the South Carolina equalizer. Game 2 LSU pitcher Jayden Heavener (9-2) was handed the loss, despite fanning 10 batters in 7.0 innings. Heaver has turned in five games this season with 10 or more strikeouts. In Sunday’s appearance, the southpaw surrendered four runs on five hits and walked five batters. SC’s starting pitcher, Jori Heard (11-2), was given the win with five strikeouts and allowed one run, four hits, and two walks in 6.0 innings. Gress made her second appearance of the day to record her second save of the season, registering one strikeout and giving up two hits in the final inning. Laneaux and Lassiter were both 2-for-3 in the game to lead LSU offensively. Although Heavener struck out the side in the top of the first inning, the Gamecocks walked in a run after drawing three walks and were hit by a pitch. In the top of the second, SC’s Quincee Lilio hit a run-scoring single to give the visiting club a 2-0 lead, but Bedell put the Tigers on the board in the bottom half inning with a groundout RBI, making the score 2-1. From there, LSU was held to six base runners for the remainder of the game, including two in the seventh. Both ballclubs went scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but South Carolina’s catcher Lexi Winters hit an RBI single in the fifth, and pinch hitter Mya Flindt hit her first collegiate home run (solo) in the sixth that stretched the Gamecocks’ lead to 4-1. LSU had a couple of two-out singles against Heard, who entered in the seventh inning but closed the door with a strikeout to secure the series win. For the 14th time this season, LSU (31-2, 6-1 SEC) scored double-digit runs, logging its 14th run-rule victory and second in SEC play. South Carolina’s record fell to 25-7 overall and 2-5 in conference games with the series-opening loss. The Tigers outhit the Gamecocks 9-5. “The offense set a good tone,” said Head Coach Beth Torina. “I think they found a lot of good ways to get on base and drew a lot of walks. That helps you get the crooked number innings. The offense was definitely the star of the show tonight.” Infielders Danieca Coffey (2-for-3), Edwards (2-for-2) and outfielder McKenzie Redoutey (2-for-3) led the Tigers offensively. Edwards smacked her third grand slam of the season and had a team-best five RBI. Edwards joins Shemiah Sanchez (2019) as the only two players in program history to have three grand slams in a single season. Edward’s fellow smash sister, Bergeron, hit her eighth homer of the season, scored three runs and had three RBI in the win. Coffey registered her team-high 14th multi-hit game this season, scored three runs and drove in one run. Redoutey, who had two RBI, turned in her 35th career multi-hit and 30th career multi-RBI games. Pitcher Sydney Berzon improved to 14-1 in the circle after pitching four scoreless innings and ended the game with four strikeouts and allowed five hits, three runs and one walk in 5.0 innings. Despite a rocky fifth inning where she gave up three runs on three hits, Berzon only allowed two base runners in the first 14 batters she faced in the first through fourth innings. Berzon and the defense retired the Gamecocks in order in the first and fourth frames, highlighted by two strikeouts in the fourth alone. “Sydney [Berzon] was awesome tonight,” said Coach Torina. “We probably got a little ahead of us at the end trying to finish the game, but overall, I thought she was awesome tonight. I saw a lot of good things she’s been working on for a good bit.” South Carolina’s starting pitcher Nealy Lamb (6-2) received the loss. She recorded one out - a strikeout - and surrendered four runs on three hits and two walks. The Tigers got to work quickly, retiring the Gamecocks in order in the top of the first inning, and put up four runs in the bottom half inning thanks to Bergeron’s three-run shot over the left-center wall, and Redoutey’s run-scoring triple, her second of the season. After batting a round in the first, LSU continued to pass the bat in the second. Coffey walked, outfielder Jalia Lassiter singled through the left side, and Bergeron loaded the bags with a walk. Edwards stepped into the batter’s box and launched her third grand slam of the season to put LSU ahead 8-0. LSU bumped its lead to 11-0 through three innings with RBI singles by Coffey, Edwards and Redoutey. Up Next Game two of the LSU-South Carolina series will be at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday.
