Da Boot Sports 3/8/2024 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA - A historic first matchup between LSU and Xavier (Ohio) on the baseball diamond saw Luke Holman earn another victory on a rainy, delayed-start on Friday night to begin weekend play. The Tigers defeated Xavier University 4-0. Holman began his night hot, earning his first strikeout versus the lead-off batter. The junior-righty forced the Musketeers into a shallow flyout and hard grounder to third, ending the top-half of the first. LSU’s offense found life early in the contest, putting up a 2-spot off three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Steven Milam got things started with a one-out single. Third baseman Tommy White matched the effort with a base hit of his own. Brady Neal stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. A hard hit, high-tracking ball made its way as close to a home run as you could possibly get without getting over the wall out in left. The ball deflected off the glove of the left fielder Carter Hendrickson before falling to the ground. Milam came in to score off the double. Hayden Travinski earned an RBI after a sacrifice fly to deep center. White came in for the second run before Ashton Larson grounded out to end the inning. Although a runner made it to first on a controversial hit by pitch, Holman delivered another strong session, mowing down two more Xavier batters in the second inning. Mac Bingham drew a walk with one retired for the Tigers. Michael Brasswell III earned an RBI Triple with a long drive that scampered under the glove of the charging Musketeer outfielder and rolled to the back wall. Paxton Kling struck out for the second time in as many at bats, but Milam doubled to pick up his second hit of the night as well as his first RBI. That would be all for the Tigers in the second inning, but not before doubling their lead to 4-0. An unusual leadoff walk came from Luke Holman after getting ahead in the count 0-2. However, solid defensive play behind the starter kept the inning quiet, escaping the small jam. LSU’s Travinski and Larson delivered back-to-back base hits, but were left stranded on base to end the third. The late-start continued to show its effects on the Tigers’ starter as Holman walked another leadoff Musketeer, and then hit the next batter. Xavier had strong potential to break the shutout in the top of the fourth with no outs and two on. Resiliency was displayed as Holman struck out the next three Xavier players. After a mound visit with Jay Johnson. He caught two looking and one went down swinging, sending LSU back to the batter’s box. Kling walked to get on base for the first time in the matchup. He proceeded to steal second and give Tommy White an RBI opportunity, but on a hard hit grounder to short, Paxton was caught in between bases. Grant Stephenson got the punch out at third base for the Musketeers. Three up, three down was the story of the 5th inning for the Xavier offense. Holman picked up his eighth K on the night before flipping a wobbler over the first base for the third out of the top half. Xavier starting pitcher Luke Hoskins settled in through the fifth. He ended the Tigers’ streak of four innings having at least one base runner. Jake Brown replaced Adam Larson in right field to begin the sixth inning for the Tigers defense. After both sides were seated quite easily, LSU’s Luke Holman retired for the night. He finished his night with 10 K’s, no hits allowed, and two walks through 97 pitches in six full innings of work. Through four starts, Holman has gone 24 innings and allowed just eight hits. Senior Christian Little came in relief for the starter. After sitting the first batter faced, Little gave up the first hit of the game for LSU. Catcher Matthew DePrey drove a double to deep right. Garrett Schultz followed it up with a base hit, placing runners on the corners. The Musketeers looked primed to get a runner across the plate for the first time on the night, but a 4-6-3 double play preserved the LSU 4-run lead as the teams headed to the top of the eighth. Little produced 1 ⅔ innings of work before Jay Johnson opted for Sophomore Griffin Herring to close. Herring struck out a batter on a check swing to retire the side. LSU’s Neal led off the bottom of the inning. Xavier’s Hoskins completed his night with a strong showing aside from the first two innings. He finished with five strikeouts and seven hits given up. Although the starter gave up four earned runs, he dealt 101 strong pitches on the night. Jake Lambdin came to pitch in relief. LSU’s pitching finished the game with 15 total strikeouts. Holman earned ten, Little with two, and Herring fanned three including two in the final frame. Although the offense went quiet after a blazing start, the Tigers cruised to a 4-0 shutout. The two teams will play again Saturday afternoon at 5:00 pm CST. You can catch that game broadcast on SEC Network+. As always, Geaux Tigers! John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life.
