Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The LSU Fighting Tigers took to Tiger Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to end their 2023 spring football camp with the annual National L Club Spring Game. Year two of the Brian Kelly era has begun with a successful spring camp with new players being introduced to the LSU practice routine and improvement being shown at every position in each practice. But most importantly camp ended injury free. The day began with the team coming out onto the field, opening up with a 20-minute warm up period. Next the team ran non-contact special team drills, kickoffs and punt formation. Redshirt freshman Javen Nicholas and senior Gregory Clayton Jr. both returned kickoffs while true freshman Kyle Parker and Clayton handled punt return duties for the Tigers. The team then worked on redzone offense and defense for a few plays before beginning the full spring game scrimmage. The scoring system for the game was: Normal scoring for the offense.. The defense would earn seven points for a turnover or a fourth down stop, five points for a missed field goal, two points for PBU, two points for a missed two-point conversion, two points for a missed PAT, one point for a sack or a tackle for loss, normal scoring for interception, fumble return for touchdown or safety. Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier both played well and were efficient with Daniels finishing 10-11 for 168 yards passing with two touchdowns, while Nussmeier went 5-8 for 139 yards with two touchdown passes. The Tigers had a difficult time rushing the football, finishing with only 86 total rushing yards on the day. True freshman Trey Holly led the team with 26 yards on eight carries. Holly also had a 15 yard touchdown catch from Jayden Daniels. The receivers had a good day. Kyren Lacy led the Tigers with five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Brian Thomas Jr. finished with three catches for 66 yards and a touchdown grab. Landon Ibieta had a very nice 70 yard touchdown catch and run from Nussmeier on the first play of the second half. The game began with Jayden Daniels throwing a 70 yard touchdown pass to Kyren Lacy on the first play of the game. Daniels pass was high and off target, but Lacy skyed up and grabbed the ball with one hand, pulling it in. Lacy then broke a couple of tackles and out-raced the defense into the end zone for the score. Damian Ramos kicked the extra point to give the white team an early 7-0 lead. The defense got on the scoreboard when true freshman Whit Weeks picked off freshman quarterback Rickie Collins and return the ball 40 yards for a touchdown. Garrett Nussmeier would lead the Tigers to their next score in the second quarter, driving 75 yards on six plays, culminating with a seven yard touchdown pass to Brian Thomas Jr. The defense held a 29-14 lead at the halftime break, but that changed quickly with Nussmeier's 70 yard touchdown pass to Ibirta on the first snap of the third quarter. A couple of possessions later, Daniels dumped a pass off to Tre Holly who took it into the end zone for the score. Daniels would then find Thomas in the end zone for the two point conversion to pull the offense to within 32-29. Rickie Collins did a nice job of driving the LSU offense on a 13 play, 54 yard drive to end the game, with Damian Ramos kicking a 34 yard field goal on the game's final play for the 32-32 tie. The defense was credited with three total sacks. Fitzgerald West Jr., Ovie Oghoufo, Harold Perkind Jr. all had stand out performances, along with West and Whit Weeks.
