Da Boot Sports 10/28/2023 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA- With LSU (6-2, 4-1) now on their bye week, a top 15 matchup with Alabama (7-1, 5-0) is in front of them for Saturday, November 4th, 2023. The Tigers will head on the road to Tuscaloosa with the SEC West title potentially hanging in the balance for the victor of that matchup. After falling to Ole Miss in a heartbreaking shootout, LSU is on the outside looking in for the lead in the west division. The Rebels are behind the Crimson Tide, each with one conference loss. However, Ole Miss still has a formidable schedule ahead of them, including a trip to Sanford Stadium in a contest with the #1 Georgia Bulldogs. If LSU can beat Bama and win out and have Ole Miss fall again, the Tigers would find themselves with replicated success as a 2-loss SEC West champion for the second time in as many years under Brian Kelly. An Alabama victory would all but guarantee that the Tide would claim a stake as the West champions for the tenth time under Nick Saban. While they control their destiny, the Tigers will be seeking another statement upset. LSU can win back-to-back games against Bama for the first time since 2010-2011 after posting a 32-31 overtime victory last season in Tiger Stadium. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is in the thick of the Heisman race, and besting an Alabama squad currently ranked in the top 10 would help his case significantly. LSU’s top-rated offense will put its talents to the test versus a tough Crimson Tide defense. Meanwhile, LSU is dealing with a few injuries to their secondary and trying to recover in time for the critical matchup. Most notably, cornerback transfer Zy Alexander is dealing with a lower leg/ankle injury hampering his play. If the Tigers can defeat Alabama and set themselves up for a date in the SEC Championship, earning a victory in Atlanta could have them in the conversation for a spot in the final year of the four-team CFB Playoff. Although LSU would be a considerably long shot to sneak in, I believe the committee would have difficulty turning down a 2-loss SEC champion with a Heisman finalist, at least the fourth seed. LSU will take on Nick Saban and the Tide on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, at Bryant-Denny Stadium in prime time at 6:45 CST on CBS. Geaux Tigers! Please "LIKE" us on Facebook.... Da Boot Sports 10/21/2023 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU took a break from conference play as they welcomed the Army Black Knights to Death Valley for their 2023 Homecoming game. LSU honored Army with camouflage painted end zones and a special pre-game ceremony, highlighted by the Silver Wings Parachute Team. The Tigers ended up blowing out the Black Knights, 62-0. Nothing personal Army, strictly business. With the victory Brian Kelly earned his 300th win as a head coach. Jayden Daniels had another strong performance, going 11-15 for 279 yards with three touchdown passes. He rushed for six yards and a touchdown. Trey Holly led the team in rushing with 91 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Noah Cain had seven carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Logan Diggs finished with 26 yards on six carries and a rushing touchdown. Malik Nabers had a great game catching four passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, while Brian Thomas Jr. finished with three catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers rolled up 570 yards of total offense on the night. Omar Speights led the LSU defense with nine total tackles. Harold Perkins Jr. finished with seven total tackles. The Tigers held the Black Knights to only 193 yards of total offense. and collected four turnovers. The Tigers wasted little time scoring as they took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in eight plays culminating with a Logan Diggs two yard touchdown plunge. 7-0 LSU with 12:05 left in the first quarter. The highlight of the drive was a beautiful 28 yard pass completion from Daniels to Brian Thomas Jr. on second and ten to the Army 32 yard line. After each team traded possessions, LSU quickly extended their lead when Jayden Daniels was flushed from the pocket on second and four and hit a wide open Brian Thomas Jr. down the near sidelines for an 86 yard touchdown. The drive covered 92 yards in two plays and only took 52 seconds. 14-0 Tigers with 5:26 left in the opening quarter. The LSU defense slammed the door on Army's face on the next possession when Andre' Sam intercepted Champ Harris at the LSU 34 and returned the ball 33 yards to the Black Knights' 33 yard line. The LSU offense took advantage of the turnover going the 33 yards in only three plays as Jayden Daniels found Brian Thomas Jr. in the back of the end zone for an eight yard touchdown. Damian Ramos' PAT made the score, 21-0 Tigers with 11:28 left in the first half. The Tigers got the ball right back as Ovie Oghoufo forced a fumble and recovered it at the Army 37 yard line. Once again, the Bayou Bengals took advantage of the turnover, scoring on a Jayden Daniels one yard touchdown run to put LSU up, 28-0 with 5:01 to go in the second quarter. On their nest possession the Black Knights turned the ball over on downs at their own 41 yard line after failing to convert on a fourth and four. LSU took over and drove 24 yards before the drive stalled, forcing a 35 yard field goal attempt by Damian Ramos. Ramos drilled the kick to increase the Tigers' lead to 31-0 with 2:10 left in the half. LSU continued to poor it on the Black Knight as they drove 72 yards in three plays, taking only 27 seconds off the clock as Jayden Daniels threw a perfect pass to Malik Nabers for a 26 yard touchdown, extending the lead to 38-0. Army had one last possession in the half. It ended with a Zy Alexander interception at the LSU 11 yard line on a poor Hail Mary attempt by Black Knight quarterback Champ Harris. The contest went to halftime with LSU holding a commanding 38-0 lead. Garrett Nussmeier took over the offense to begin the second half and led the Tigers to a score as he hit Malik Nabers in stride for a 51 yard touchdown. The drive went 72 yards in four plays. 45-0 LSU with 9:07 left in the third quarter. Next LSU extended the lead to 48-0 on a 32 yard field goal by Damian Ramos on a short drive that stalled after moving 20 yards on 11 plays. After Army turned the ball over on downs for the third time in the contest, the LSU offense stayed in high gear as Nussmeier led the Tigers on a 13 play 60 yard drive, eating 8:20 off the game clock finishing with Noah Cain finding the end zone from two yards out putting the Tigers up, 55-0 with only 4:40 left in the game. Up 55-0 with 2:07 left, the LSU offense was still not done. The Tigers kept it on the ground, trying to run the clock out to end the contest, but true freshman running back Trey Holly had other plans as he took a hand off on third and seven from the LSU 33 and raced 67 yards for his first touchdown wearing the purple and gold. The electrifying run finished off the scoring on the night. 62-0, Victory for LSU! With the dominating victory the Tigers are now 6-2 overall and sit at 4-1 in the SEC. Next LSU will have a bye week, to rest and prepare for a huge matchup on Saturday, November 4th in Tuscaloosa against Alabama. Game time and network coverage TBA. Da Boot Sports 10/15/2023 By: Corey Perrillioux BATON ROUGE, LA - The LSU Fighting Tigers put on an offensive clinic in Death Valley against the Auburn Tigers and the LSU defense showed up to play football after several weeks of struggling in a 48-18 win in front of 102, 321 electric Tiger fans. LSU opened the game on offense with a 9-yard pass to TE Mason Taylor. The offense went tempo with a huge Diggs run for 35 yards. In four plays, the Tigers punched it in with a passing TD from Jayden Daniels to Malik Nabers. One minute and 39 seconds is all it took for LSU to go up 7-0. Auburn started their first possession from the 25-yard line. The Tigers of Auburn couldn’t generate any offense and punted after a three and out. LSU fielded the punt and following a holding penalty started their second offensive possession from their 22-yard line. LSU would again start fast on offense with an impressive drive. Dual threat quarterback Jayden Daniels showcased his running skills with a 26-yard scamper into Auburn territory. The 66-yard drive was a mix of runs and passes and culminated with a 30-yard Damian Ramos field goal to extend the LSU lead to 10-0. The second Auburn drive began from their 22-yard line. LSU’s defense again forced a 3 and out. The LSU Tigers began their third drive from their 35-yard line. On 2nd and 11, Jayden Daniels connected with running back John Emery Jr. for 49 yards down to Auburn’s 17-yard line. Four plays later, Emery punched it in the end zone for a touchdown and following the extra point, the Bayou Bengals lead 17-0. The drive went 65 yards in 6 plays. Auburn began its third drive from their 25-yard line. They finally got a nice drive going with the aid of an LSU defensive pass interference penalty. The first quarter ended with Auburn driving and LSU leading 17-0. Auburn reached the end zone with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jarquez Hunter. The drive took 8 plays and went 75 yards to close the LSU lead to 17-7. LSU took its first possession of the 2nd quarter at the 25-yard line. Following a sack of QB Jayden Daniels, the offense once again began a methodical drive. The Auburn Tigers Defense appeared to have no answer to the LSU offense as the high-powered Bayou Bengals drove down the field at will. The drive stalled at the 12-yard line following a false start by the offensive line. Ramos capped the drive off with a 35-yard field goal to increase the LSU advantage to 20-7. The drive went 57 yards in 9 plays. Auburn began its first drive of the 2nd quarter at the 25-yard line. Following a few nice runs, the LSU defense stiffened and forced an Oscar Chapman punt. LSU’s offense took over at the 20-yard line. The Tigers suffered their first 3 and out drive of the game as Jay Bramblett punted to Auburn, LSU's only punt of the contest. Auburn’s possession started at the 20-yard line. The LSU defense again stifled the Auburn drive forcing a 3 and out and a punt from the Auburn 13-yard line. LSU began its next drive from midfield, its best starting field position of the game. D.J. James intercepted Jayden Daniels at the Auburn 16-yard line following a deflection. LSU’s defense showed improvement from week's past as they shut down the Auburn drive forcing a punt. LSU took over at the 5-yard line with 9 seconds remaining in the 1st half. Taking a knee, LSU took a 20-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. LSU performed with nice offense execution and the defense showed up playing strong in the first half. The Pete Jenkins effect appears to be working nicely for the Tigers defense. The Auburn Tigers opened the 3rd quarter from their 25-yard line. QB Robby Ashford replaced Payton Thorne to begin the second half and the Auburn Tigers put a nice drive together. Harold Perkins ended the drive with a sack on 3rd down, forcing Auburn to try a field goal. The 38-yard field goal attempt was good closing the LSU lead to 20-10. LSU took the kickoff at the 1-yard line and RB Kaleb Jackson broke a nice kick return to the Auburn 39-yard line. Jayden Daniels hit Kyren Lacy for a 25-yard touchdown strike to bring the LSU lead to 27-10. Once again, Auburn would begin their drive from the 25-yard line. The LSU defense again forced a three and out and punt from the Auburn 30-yard line. The LSU Tigers started the next possession from the 33-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Jayden Daniels hit Kyren Lacy for a huge 57-yard play to the 10. Three plays later, Daniels hit RB Josh Williams for a 13-yard touchdown. The drive covered 67-yards in 4 plays. LSU now lead 34-10 with 3:53 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Auburn began the next drive from the 16-yard line following a personal foul. LSU aided the Auburn Tigers with a personal foul face mask penalty. Auburn was forced to go for it on 4th and 4 from the 14-yard line. They converted it to keep the drive alive with a 1st and goal from the 6-yard line. The 3rd quarter ended as Auburn had a 2nd down and goal from the LSU 3-yard line. The score after three was LSU 34, Auburn 10. Auburn opened the 4th quarter with a 3-yard touchdown pass from QB Robby Ashford to TE Brandon Frazier. Auburn followed the touchdown with a 2-point conversion from Ashford to Frazier. The score now stood at LSU 34 Auburn 18. From the 25, LSU’s powerful offense began its next drive. Jayden Daniels again showcased his running ability as he ran for 23-yards. LSU drove the 75-yards and capped the drive off with a 5-yard Logan Diggs touchdown run. LSU went up 41–18. Auburn took the ensuing kickoff with a return to the 25-yard line. Aided by a roughing the passer call, the Tigers continued to drive until a failed attempt at a 4th and 5 at their 45-yard line, turning the ball over on downs. LSU took over on offense at Auburn’s 48-yard line. This drive showcased the hard-nosed running of running back John Emery Jr. with 28 yards before heading to the sideline with an injury. RB Josh Williams capped the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown bringing the score to 48-18. The game ended in a 48-18 LSU victory. John Emery Jr. rushed 6 times 42 yards and a touchdown. Malik Nabers had 6 receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown grab while Kyren Lacy had 4 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. LSU’s high-powered offense continued to dazzle fans and what at times seemed as though they scored at will against the Auburn defense. The Bayou Bengals had 39 rushing attempts for 238 yards and 27 passing attempts for 325 yards totaling 563 yards of total offense. LSU’s defense had 2 sacks. One from Harold Perkins Jr. and the other by Mekhi Wingo respectively. The leading tackler for the Tigers was Zy Alexander with 9 total tackles. The LSU defense was much improved this week in a valiant effort to hold Auburn to 18 points and only 293 yards of total offense. With this victory LSU improves to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in SEC play. Next up LSU will take a break from conference play as they will host Army on Saturday, October 21 in Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30pm CST and the contest will be televised by SEC Network. Weil COLUMBIA, MO - A reeling LSU team limped into Columbia, Missouri facing a must win situation against a 5-0 Missouri Tigers team and came away with a huge 49-39 win. Once again, it was Jayden Daniels who put the Tigers on his back and carried them to victory. Daniels finished the game going 15-21 for 259 yards passing and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 130 yards and a score. Logan Diggs had a solid day, rushing for 134 yards and a touchdown. Malik Nabers led the Tigers in receiving with 146 yards on six catches with a touchdown grab. The defense struggled through most of the contest, but came up with some big second half stops and the big play of the game in the fourth quarter to seal the win when Major Burns returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown with 34 seconds left. The home team Tigers wasted little time getting on the board, driving 87 yards in nine plays to score on an 18 yard touchdown pass from Brady Cook to Theo Wease on their first possession of the game. Cook would then run the ball into the end zone for a successful two point conversion to put Missouri up 8-0 with 9:50 left in the opening quarter. LSU answered Missouri's score, driving 75 yards on eleven plays, culminating with a one yard touchdown leap by Logan Diggs. Damian Ramos pushed the PAT through to pull the Bayou Bengals to within, 8-7 with 3:33 left in the first period. The LSU defensive woes continued as Mizzou easily drove 75 yards on only six plays to increase their lead to 15-7 on a 21 yard touchdown run by Cody Schrader. After a quick three and out by the visiting Tigers, Mizzou took full advantage, driving 57 yards in six plays, scoring on a Cook to Brett Norfleet touchdown pass to extend the home team's lead to 22-7 with 10:47 to go in the first half. While the LSU defensive play was as horrifying as a Stephen King novel allowing Missouri to score at will, the Mizzou defense was doing its part to help their team, keeping the Bayou Bengals out of the end zone to force a field goal attempt. Damian Ramos drilled his kick from 48 yards out to pull LSU to within, 22-10 with 5:43 left in the second quarter. On Missouri's next offensive possession the LSU defense finally came up with a huge stop when Harold Perkins Jr. intercepted Brady Cook at the Mizzou 45 yard line, giving the Tigers offense another opportunity to cut into the lead before the half. LSU was able to capitalize on the turnover, taking six plays to drive 45 yards, scoring on a three yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Mason Taylor. 22-17 Mizzou with only 1:59 left in the first half. Missouri was able to answer the LSU touchdown, driving 42 yards on nine plays, extending their lead to 25-17 on a Harrison Mevis 50 yard field goal on the last play of the first half. Missouri took the kickoff to start the second half and began to march down the field. But the LSU defense bent but didn't break on this drive, stopping the Tigers and forcing a 44 yard field goal attempt. Harrison Mevis pushed the ball wide right and the LSU defense got the huge stop. It appeared that Harold Perkins Jr. may have gotten a hand on the kick. LSU began their first drive of the second half at their own 27 yard line and drove into Mizzou territory before stalling at the 12 yard line. Damian Ramos kicked a 29 yard field goal to pull the Tigers to within five points, 25-20 with 8:12 left in the third quarter. The LSU defense was able to force a three and out for back to back stops, giving the Tigers an opportunity to take their first lead of the contest and that's exactly what the LSU offense did. Jayden Daniels hit Brian Thomas Jr. in stride in the end zone from 42 yards out to give LSU a 27-25 lead with 6:00 left in the third quarter. It took LSU only two plays to score on the drive. However LSU's defense couldn't protect the lead, as Missouri responded by driving 75 yards in six plays, scoring on a two yard touchdown run by Schrader. 32-27 Mizzou with 2:22 left in the third period. After a 73 yard punt pinned LSU back deep in their own territory, an injured Jayden Daniels drove the Tigers 92 yards in seven plays, culminating with an incredible 35 yard touchdown run by Daniels. Daniels then hit Malik Nabers in the end zone to convert a two point conversion giving LSU a 35-32 lead with 7:54 left in the game. But as before, the LSU lead didn't last long as Missouri answered with a 70 yard touchdown drive as Cody Schrader punched it in from one yard out as the home team Tigers grabbed a 39-35 lead. The LSU offense remained in high gear as they responded to the Mizzou score going 75 yards in five plays as Daniels hit a wide open Malik Nabers for a 29 yard touchdown. The PAT gave the Tigers a 42-39 lead with 2:58 left in the contest. LSU's defense made a much needed stand late as Bradyn Swinson sacked Cook, forcing a fumble that Missouri recovered for a 26 yard loss setting up a fourth and 32 from the Mizzou 28. Missouri went for it and the Tigers held, giving the LSU offense the ball at Mizzou 48 yard line with only 1:06 remaining. The Tigers sputtered putting themselves in a third and 19 situation from their own 43. Logan Diggs picked up eight yards to set up a fourth and 11 from the Mizzou 49. Jay Bramblett launched a 44 yard punt that went out of bounds at the Missouri five yard line with 45 seconds left on the clock. On second down from the five, Brady Cook was intercepted by Major Burns who returned the ball 17 yards for the pick six! The Bayou Bengals now led 49-39 with :34 seconds left in the game. With the win LSU is now 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SEC play. On a night where over 1,300 total yards of offense got put up, defense, or lack-there-of, seemed to stir most of the conversation. Jayden Daniels and the Tiger offense looked every bit like a championship-caliber group, putting up seven touchdowns in the contest; unfortunately, the other side of the ball looked like middle-school benchwarmers who were only on the field because Matt House was their father and coach. LSU did everything they could to let Ole Miss claim victory in this one, including allowing 21 first-quarter points. Missed tackles, several broken coverages, and no forced turnovers kept the Rebels in it late into the end of the game. The SEC foes battled to the sights and sounds of a record crowd attendance of 66,703 under a full-moon evening. Although the game stayed competitive for most of the night, things began to get chippy after a late controversial LSU touchdown gave them the lead 49-40. A punch thrown by an Ole Miss defender and beer cans raining down from the Rebel student section as LSU lined up for the point-after attempt resulted in Brian Kelly pulling his squad to the sideline as officials attempted to settle the atmosphere. Jaxon Dart got left with too much time on the clock for him and the quick-paced offense to storm downfield and get themselves in position to win the game on a touchdown pass with 39 seconds remaining. A successful 2-point conversion put the Rebels up by 6, but the Tigers were allowed a chance to win the game. Daniels fired a 42-yard pitch and catch to Chris Hilton Jr. on the first play of the final drive, putting the ball on the Ole Miss 33-yard line. The Tigers retained two timeouts and used them with the game clock winding down. A horse-collar tackle penalty against an Ole Miss defender would set the Tigers inside the red zone. With the ball on the 16-yard line, Daniels stands a real opportunity to take a couple of shots into the end zone. However, two false start penalties committed by stars Will Campbell and Malik Nabers pushed the LSU offense back to the 26 and left time for just one more play. The last play of the game saw quarterback Jayden Daniels roll out to his right with pressure sent up the middle. He quickly changed direction and found some breathing room on the left side of the field. Daniels fired a ball into the end zone amongst a cluster of jerseys but somehow hit Hilton in the hands on a high jump ball. Defenders surrounded the Tigers, and the ball deflected off the potential receiver; the game was over. A red and powder blue sea flooded the field as #20 Ole Miss claimed a critical conference win over #13 LSU in the Magnolia Bowl. This game was a gut-wrenching loss for Brian Kelly and LSU fans. The Bayou Bengals are now on the outside looking in with a 3-2 record, and it will not get any easier. A ranked Missouri team awaits LSU as they duke it out in Columbia next Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. CST. As always, Geaux Tigers!
