The Tigers, who will be after a second straight 10-win season when they face Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 1 in Tampa, signed eight of the 10 highest-rated prospects in Louisiana. LSU’s signing class included 17 players who prepped at Louisiana High Schools and six from the state of Texas. “We’re excited about the 27 total signings - 26 high school players and one junior college player today,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “Fourteen of them will enroll in January, which obviously gives us a great opportunity to develop those players through the winter conditioning program and get them acclimated academically and socially. “We also can put them in a good position from a time management standpoint so that when we get into the summer and preseason camp, they’re a lot more comfortable being in college.” LSU signed one player from the states of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and North Carolina. Of the 27 signees, 14 plan to enroll early at LSU and take part in spring practice. “When we talk about recruiting and where our focus is, our focus is on the state of Louisiana,” Kelly said. “Our focus is on freshmen and it’s on a well-rounded student-athlete that recognizes the value of an LSU degree and wants to play for championships. That will be reflected in this class.” The LSU signing class includes 12 players who won a state championship while in high school, 12 who played on both sides of the ball, and 10 who were invited to participate in the All-America All-Star Games. The group also includes 22 players who were multi-sport athletes in high school. LSU’s signing class consists of 11 offensive players, 15 on defense and one specialist. The group includes the Mississippi Player of the Year in cornerback PJ Woodland from Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, and the Louisiana Player of the Year in cornerback Ju’Juan Johnson from Lafayette Christian Academy. The top-rated player in the LSU class is tight end Trey’Dez Green from Zachary. Green joins LSU after a stellar prep career, one that saw him star in both football and basketball. Green is the nation’s No. 1-ranked tight end and the top prospect in Louisiana. Johnson from Lafayette Christian Academy capped his prep career as Louisiana’s all-time leader in total offense (14,451 yards) and touchdowns (171). “In three recruiting cycles we’ve brought 64 freshmen into our program,” Kelly said. “I’ve said this since I got here - we’re going to build this program on freshmen. Last year, we had to bring in a number of transfers because that was necessary for where we were as a program. This year, we’ve only brought in two. “You can see the shift in transition towards developing our players and giving them the opportunity to grow within our program. Then, we have to put them on the field. We had some young players who had to play this year, and there’s some growing pains that come along with that. But I’m committed to that growth and that kind of development. I think in the long run that proves to be the way to championships, continuity and consistencies in your program.” LSU Football – December Signees Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Cl.-Exp. Da Boot Sports 12/9/2023 By David Penn New York, NY - That Kid Jayden Daniels became the 86th player to hoist the Heisman Trophy at the 87th presentation, joining Billy Cannon and Joe Burrow as the previous LSU Heisman winners. Once upon a time, that kid Jayden announced that he was entering the transfer portal. In response to his announcement, Daniels’ Arizona State teammates responded by destroying his locker. Daniels would commit to new LSU head coach Brian Kelly and his journey toward immortality would begin. In Daniels’ first season under center for the LSU Tigers, under the guidance of Kelly and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, Daniels would guide the LSU offense to a 10 win season, the SEC west title, and an appearance in the SEC Championship game. Daniels completed 68.6% of his passes for 2,913 yards, 7.5 yards per completion, 17 TDs, and only 3 INTs. Daniels also added 885 yards rushing, 4.8 yards per carry, and 11 TDs. Daniels though was often criticized for being a run first pass second QB in his first year in purple and gold. Improvement was Daniels’ focus in the off-season, improvement reading defenses, going through progressions, trusting his skill positions, and when to scramble. Mission accomplished. In his Hesiman campaign Daniels completed 72.2% of his passes for 3,812 yards, 11.7 yards per completion, 40 TDs, 4 INTs. He would rush for 1,134 yards at 8.4 yards per carry, and score 10 TDs. More impressively, he threw for 900 more yards in his second year while completing 61 less passes, he rushed for 249 more yards on 51 less attempts. Daniels was the most explosive player of the 2023 football season, accounting for nearly 100 plays of 20 yards or more. Daniels had the highest completion percentage in the nation on passes over 20 yards at 67%, Daniels threw no interceptions when the play was more than 20 yards down field, and threw 22 TDs on plays over 20 yards, he was ranked first in all 3 of those categories. After the ceremony, Coach Kelly said, “This was the most exciting player in college football, I’m so excited and happy for him that he was able to achieve a dream of his and be the Heisman Trophy winner, an exciting night for Jaden Daniels and LSU.” The most notable part of Daniels’ acceptance speech was when he said. “Being a college and winning this award has been a dream come true, I want to dedicate this award to every boy and girl who has a dream, with faith and hard work, you never know what’s possible.” Many will argue that perhaps a player on a different team was more deserving because LSU finished the season 9-3, not in the playoff hunt, not a division or conference champion, but the voters agreed that the Heisman isn’t about being the best player on the best team, it is about being the best player in the country. To congratulate Daniels on the accomplishment were two other QBs that won the award with multiple losses, Robert Griffin III and Tim Tebow were present on stage to embrace the newest member of the Heisman fold. The Joe Moore has been presented annually to the top offensive line in college football. LSU won the award in 2019. Joining the Tigers as finalist are Georgia, Oregon and Washington. “Each season seems to have a theme when it comes to O-line play, and each of this year’s finalists embody the toughness, physicality, effort, and strain that historically defines our position,” said Cole Cubelic, lead SEC Network sideline analyst, and Chairman of the Voting Committee. “These dudes are a bunch of cavemen that consistently ‘look for work’, enforce instead of watch, strain to finish, and work to eliminate their man on every play.” Coached by Brad Davis, the performance of LSU’s offensive line has been crucial to the Tigers leading the nation in several categories, including points per game (46.4) and total yards (547.8). LSU is the only team in the FBS to average 200 rushing yards (213.5) and 300 passing yards (334.3) per game. LSU leads the nation in rushing yards per attempt with a 6.33 average, which is on pace to break the school record of 6.1 set in 2015. LSU has started the same combination on the offensive line in 11 of 12 games and the unit is led by a pair of All-SEC tackles in sophomores Will Campbell and Emery Jones. Charles Turner, the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week in the win over Auburn, has started all 12 games at center, while Miles Frazier and Garrett Dellinger are the Tigers guards. Campbell leads all offensive line in snaps, playing 731 snaps without allowing a sack. He’s followed by Dellinger (723 snaps), Frazier (711), Turner (689) and Jones (634). Lance Heard, who started against Army, has 195 snaps, while fellow true freshman center DJ Chester has played 81 snaps. The unit has been instrumental in providing protection and support for quarterback Jayden Daniels and his record-setting season. Daniels, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and Heisman Trophy finalist, leads the nation in total offense (412.2), passing TDs (40), total TDs (50) and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,134). The Tigers have scored 40 points or more nine times, including six of their eight SEC games, and have topped the 500-yard mark on nine occasions. LSU racked up 701 yards in the 52-35 win over Florida, the most ever given up by the Gators. For the first time in school history, LSU’s offense cracked the 500-yard mark in seven straight games, doing so against Grambling State (622), Mississippi State (530), Arkansas (509), Ole Miss (637), Missouri (533), Auburn (563) and Army (569). LSU also reached the 300-yard mark in both rushing and passing yards in wins over Grambling and Florida. LSU tallied 302 rushing yards and 320 passing yards against Grambling and followed that with 329 yards on the ground and 372 yards through the air in the win over Florida. Prior to this year, LSU had only five games in its history with 300 rushing and passing yards. The winner of the Joe Moore Award will be announced in mid-December when the awards committee comes to campus to present the trophy to the winning unit. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Heisman Trophy will be awarded on Saturday, December 9th at 7:00pm CST in New York City and the five award finalist have been invited to attend. LSU's electrifying quarterback Jayden Dainels, who is now the heavy favorite will be joined by, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. No one meant more to their team than Jayden Daniels. Daniels carried the Bayou Bengals to a 9-3 record and a birth to the ReliaQuest Bowl where LSU will face Wisconsin on January 1st. in Tampa. Daniels dazzled the nation with crazy video game type numbers each week as defenses struggled to slow down the senior signal caller. He finished the 2023 season completing 236-327 passes, a 72.2 completion % for 3,812 yards with 40 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions, while rushing for a team leading 1,134 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Without a doubt he is the most dynamic and simply the best player in college football this season.
