Da Boot Sports 9/28/2022 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - Former LSU and New York Giants defensive end Leonard Marshall was inducted into the 'Giants Ring of Honor' this past Monday night, Sept. 26 in MetLife Stadium during halftime of the Giants vs. Cowboys MNF contest. He joined six other Giant greats, Joe Morris, Rodney Hampton, Ottis Anderson, Kyle Rote, Jimmy Patton and athletic trainer Ronnie Barnes, as each were presented with their ring of honor jackets as their names were unveiled in the honorary ring around the stadium. Marshall, a native of Franklin, Louisiana played football at LSU from 1979 to 1982. He finished his career with 180 tackles and five sacks. During his senior season he was a huge part of one of the greatest defenses ever assembled at LSU, finishing with 53 tackles and four sacks and went on to be named the team's most valuable defensive player. He graduated from LSU with a degree in Business Administration and was later inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame in 2008. The New York Giants drafted Marshall in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft. He would go on to be a part of two Super Bowl Championship teams, as the Giants won Super Bowl XXI and XXV. Marshall played for the Giants from 1983-1992 before finishing his career with the New York Jets (1993) then the Washington Redskins (1994). He played in 177 NFL games totaling 714 tackles and 83.5 sacks, as well as being voted to the Pro Bowl in 1985 & 1986. He has the third most sacks in Giants history, only behind Michael Strahan and Lawrence Taylor. Three years ago Leonard was nice enough to take time out of his busy schedule to do a Q & A with me for Da Boot Sports. Since then we have become friends, keeping in touch regularly. I'm so excited for him, as this honor has been long overdue. What a great football career! Please enjoy looking at the photos from the big day provided to me by Leonard Marshall himself. **John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." That they did, as they coasted to a 38-0 victory in front of 100,501 fans in Death Valley. It was a dominating win as the LSU defense completely shut down the Lobos all night long, keeping New Mexico off of the scoreboard while allowing only 88 yards of total offense. Damian Ramos added the point, giving LSU a 7-0 lead with 9:52 left in the first quarter. The Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 on their next possession as Damian Ramos kicked a 31 yard field goal. LSU's final score of the first half came on a one yard touchdown run by Armoni Goodwin with :23 left on the clock. The score ended a 88 yard drive on 15 plays, taking 5:44 off the clock. 17-0 LSU at the half. Garrett Nussmeier entered the contest to finish the drive and the game. On the Tigers next possession the offense would strike quickly, going 73 yards on four plays in only 1:33. Brian Thomas Jr. showed some outstanding moves, following blocks by his teammates down field as he caught Nussmeier's pass at the LSU 46 yard line, then raced 57 yards for the score. Ward, who plays both safety and nickel back, is this week’s SEC Defensive Player of the Week, while Ojulari has been named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week. The honor is the first of Ward’s career, while Ojulari has earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week three times. Ward and Ojulari served as the catalyst for an LSU defense that held the Bulldogs to nearly 200 yards below their season average. LSU also limited Mississippi State to just 3-of-14 on third-down attempts and stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down three times. Will Rogers, who came into the game leading the SEC in nearly every passing category, was held to season lows for yards (214) and touchdowns (1). He was also sacked four times as LSU’s defense allowed only 289 yards to a Mississippi State offense that came into the game averaging 486 yards and 44 points a game. Down 13-7 at halftime, the Tiger defense gave up only three second half points and 86 total yards. Meanwhile, LSU’s offense outscored Mississippi State, 24-3, in the second half, including 21-0 in the fourth quarter. Ward finished the game with a career-best 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and an interception. His interception came late in the fourth quarter and sealed the win. Ojulari had four tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He added a pair of quarterback hurries. **John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. (Find Jesus. The Tigers continue to show steady improvement as they provided the Tiger faithful with a welcomed SEC victory and a reason to build on their optimism. What has been widely accepted as a rebuilding period for LSU football, the Tigers seem to be putting together a competitive football team as they are now 2-1 overall, 1-0 in SEC play. The LSU offensive line started the contest shaky with blown blocking assignments and false start penalties. But as the game went on they began to gel and provided better protection for Jayden Daniels while opening running lanes for the LSU running backs. Jayden Daniels certainly proved why he was the best choice to lead the LSU offense with his ability to run and pass. He finished the night rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown while passing for 210 yards with a touchdown pass to Jaray Jenkins. The Tigers rushed for a total of 206 yards with three rushing touchdowns. Armoni Goodwin had 75 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. John Emery Jr. added 32 tough yards on 11 carries, while Josh Williams had one carry on the night for a physical seven yard touchdown run. Malik Nabers lead the Tigers in receiving with 76 yards on six catches. Kayshon Boutte finished with three grabs for 31 yards and Jaray Jenkins caught three passes for 23 yards and a score. LSU receivers combined for 210 yards and one touchdown. LSU's defense was up to the challenge, grounding the high flying offense of Mississippi State. Bulldog quarterback Will Rogers finished 24-42 for 214 yards and one touchdown. The Tigers held Mississippi State to only 75 yards rushing in the game. Jay Ward lead the team in tackles finishing with 11 along with an interception. Micah Baskerville finished with eight tackles, while freshman Harold Perkins had five tackles with 1.5 sacks. The LSU offense started the game slowly as they showed no signs of life until scoring late in the second quarter. Trailing 13-0, the Tigers would drive 75 yards in seven plays culminating with Jayden Daniels finding Jaray Jenkins for an eight yard touchdown as the Bulldogs held a 13-7 lead into the halftime break. The third quarter was all about defense. Both LSU and State could only manage a field goal each as the Bulldogs would lead 16-10 heading into the fourth quarter. LSU dominated the final period on both sides of the ball. The Tiger defense turned up the heat as they constantly harassed Will Rogers causing the 'Air Raid Attack' to sputter for the remainder of the contest, while LSU's offense exploded for 21 unanswered points. The Tigers took their first lead of the game with 14:11 left on the clock when Jayden Daniels scrambled into the end zone from three yards out putting LSU up 17-16 with Damian Ramos' PAT. LSU then marched 85 yards on 14 plays on their next possession with Josh Williams finishing the drive with a seven yard touchdown run. 24-16, Tigers with 6:53 left in the game. After the Bulldogs second consecutive three and out, the Tigers put an exclamation point on the victory when Armoni Goodwin broke a 47 yard touchdown run for the final score of the contest. With the impressive win, the Tigers are now 2-1, (1-0) and will face New Mexico next Saturday in Tiger Stadium. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU senior running back John Emery Jr. will be available to play for the Tigers this week after sitting out the first two games of the season due to academic issues that unexpectedly extended over from last season's suspension. Emery has had a strong spring and fall camp and is looking forward to finally returning to the team and is ready to hit the field and contribute. Brian Kelly has been very pleased with Emery and is looking forward to working him back into the offensive attack. “Let’s be careful now, he’s been out for a while, so to put a lot of expectations on him for the first game, we certainly can’t do that,” Kelly said. “We have other backs that have done really well, but he will be part of the mix. We’ve seen his capabilities throughout camp. We’ve kept him active within our rotations, so he’s ready to play. We’re excited to get him back.” **John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father except through me." (Find Jesus. God Bless) Da Boot Sports 9/13/2022 By: Terrill J.
