Da Boot Sports 11/30/2023 LSU Sports Communications By: Michael Bonnette BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Jayden Daniels picked up his first national honor on Thursday as he was named the recipient of the 2023 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation announced. Daniels learned of winning the award on Thursday morning when John Unitas, son of the legendary Baltimore Colts quarterback, called the LSU senior with the news. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is presented annually to the nation’s top quarterback who best exemplifies character, scholastic and athletic achievement. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is one of three national awards dedicated to quarterbacks and Daniels is a finalist for the other two – the Manning Award and the Davey O’Brien Award. Daniels joins Joe Burrow as LSU’s two Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winners. Burrow won the award in 2019. Daniels becomes the third LSU quarterback to win a national award, joining Burrow and JaMarcus Russell. Burrow won every national award for a quarterback on his way to the Heisman Trophy in 2019, while Russell was the recipient of the Manning Award in 2006. Daniels’ exciting achievements will be honored on Thursday, December 7, in Baltimore. Two-time Super Bowl Champions and former Baltimore Colt Billy Curry will serve as the keynote speaker at the event. The 2023 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award presentation celebrating Daniels will be livestreamed on the Golden Arm Award YouTube channel – watch live here. The candidates for the award were selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players. The award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class. Candidates are chosen based on player performance on-and-off the field. Daniels, who has had the best season of any FBS quarterback with nearly 5,000 total yards of offense, is also a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, and the Maxwell Award. The finalists for the Heisman Trophy will be announced on Monday night on ESPN. Daniels has put together a record-setting season in 2023, leading the nation in total offense (412.2), touchdown passes (40), TDs responsible for (50) and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,134). His pass efficiency rating of 208.0 through 12 games is the best in FBS history. The five-time SEC Offensive Player of the Week this year, Daniels is one of only two players in SEC history to pass for 3,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season, joining Johnny Manziel who did it in 2012 at Texas A&M. Daniels is also one of only five players in SEC history to account for 50 touchdowns in a season, joining Heisman Trophy winners Burrow (63), Tim Tebow (55), Cam Newton (51) and Bryce Young (50). Daniels became the first player in FBS history to pass for 350 yards and rush for 200 yards in a game when he did it in the win over Florida, setting the SEC record for total offense with 606 yards. Daniels passed for 372 yards and rushed for 234 yards in the 52-35 win over the Gators. A week later, he tied the LSU record for touchdowns in a game with eight (6 passing, 2 rushing) in the win over Georgia State. He tied Burrow’s mark which was set against Oklahoma in 2019. Daniels has accounted for at least four TDs in nine games this year, one shy of the school record and he’s reached the 400-yard mark in total offense six times. He joined Burrow as the only players in LSU history to have three 500-yard games of total offense in a season. Overall, Daniels has thrown for 3,812 yards, connecting on 236-of-327 passes with only four interceptions. Daniels has been the catalyst behind an LSU offense that leads the nation in total offense (547.8) and scoring (46.4). The Tigers are the only team in college football to average 300 passing yards and 200 rushing yards a contest. LSU ranks No. 4 nationally in passing yards per game (334.3) and No. 7 in rushing with a 213.5 average. The LSU offense also features the nation’s leader in receiving yards in Malik Nabers and the top two touchdown producers at wide receiver in Brian Thomas (15) along with Nabers (14). *John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - On a beautiful morning in Tiger Stadium, LSU honored their senior class, then highlighted the day with a huge 42-30 victory over the visiting Texas A&M Aggies. After the slow start Jayden Daniels finished the day going 16-24 for 235 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 120 yards rushing on 11 carries. We now wait for Saturday, December 9th in New York City to see if Daniels will be LSU's third Heisman Trophy winner. Malik Nabers finished with six catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Nabers surpassed Wendall Davis for the most catches in LSU history with 184 career grabs. He also just fell 21 yards short of becoming LSU's all-time leader in receiving yards, a record that he should break in LSU's bowl game. Harold Perkins Jr. lead the Tigers defense with nine tackles, a half a sack and one and a half tackles for loss. Greg Penn III added eight total tackles, one sack and a huge interception. LSU got on the board first halfway through the first quarter, driving 60 yards on nine plays, ending with a Logan Diggs one yard touchdown run. 7-0 LSU with 7:52 left in the first period. The Aggies responded with an impressive 17 play, 67 yard drive, culminating with a two yard touchdown run by Le'Von Moss to tie the game at 7-7 with 13:43 left in the second quarter. A&M ate 9:02 off the clock on the scoring drive. After a LSU three and out, Texas A&M drove 35 yards in nine plays to take their first lead of the contest on a 48 yard field goal by Randy Bond. 10-7 Aggies with 8:17 to go in the first half. The Tigers answered the Aggies score to reclaim the lead, 14-10 on a six yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Malik Nabers. But the LSU defense couldn't slow down or stop the Texas A&M offense as they would drive 78 yards in 13 plays to take a 17-14 lead on a 14 yard touchdown pass from Jaylen Henderson to Jake Johnson with only 14 seconds left until halftime. HEISMAN WATCH: Jayden Daniels finished the first half going 7-10 for 52 yards and one touchdown while adding 59 yards rushing. Texas A&M took the second half kickoff and easily drove 75 yards in seven plays to increase their lead to 24-14 on a one yard touchdown run by Mark Nabou Jr. with 11:04 left in the third quarter. Jayden Daniels and the Tiger offense quickly responded with a eight play 73 yard drive, culminating with a one yard touchdown run by Josh Williams. 24-21 A&M with 7:51 left in the third. The highlight of the drive was a 49 yard run by Daniels on 4th and four from the LSU 47 to the Aggies' four. The LSU defense finally came up with their biggest stop of the game when Greg Penn III intercepted a Jaylen Henderson pass at the Tigers' 39 yard line. The Tigers took full advantage of the A&M turnover, driving 61 yards in only three plays as Jayden Daniels found Brian Thomas Jr. in the far back corner of the end zone for a 23 yard touchdown. The score put LSU up 28-24 with 11:52 left in the game. The LSU defense doesn't get many back to back stops, but they did just that on the Aggies' next possession, forcing a punt after a three and out. The Tigers increased their lead to 35-24 when Jayden Daniels hit Malik Nabers on a beautiful 21 yard touchdown with 8:25 left in the contest. The LSU defesnse continued to stink like Bourbon street on a Saturday night as they allowed the Aggies to go 64 yards in only three plays to score on a 51 yard touchdown from Henderson to Max Wright. Wright broke three tackles on his way to the end zone. A&M went for two and the conversion fail, as LSU now lead 35-30 with 7:20 left on the clock. The LSU offense responded with a seven play 75 yard scoring drive as Jayden Daniels connected with Kyren Lacy for a 15 yard touchdown with 4:19 left, putting the Tigers up 42-30. Texas A&M turned the ball over on downs on their next possession putting LSU in position to drive the final nail in the coffin with another score. Starting at the A&M 17 yard line, the Tigers simply ran out the final 2:48 of the game. Victory for LSU! With the win LSU finishes the season 9-3 overall and 6-2 in SEC play. Now the Tigers will wait to find out their bowl game destination after next weekend's conference championship games. Weil BATON ROUGE - LSU took a break from conference play as they welcomed Georgia State to Tiger Stadium. LSU defeated the Panthers 56-14 behind Jayden Daniels eight touchdowns, (six through the air & two on the ground). Daniels had another Heisman caliber performance, finishing the night going 25-30 for 413 yards and six touchdown passes. He also added 96 yards rushing with two scores. Malik Nabers had eight catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Kyren Lacy finished with five grabs for 101 yards with two touchdowns and Brian Thomas Jr. had four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Omar Speights led the Tigers with ten total tackles on the night. Ashton Stamps had a solid contest finishing with eight tackles. The Panthers took the opening kickoff and methodically drove 75 yards in eight plays culminating with a six yard touchdown pass from Darren Grainger to Tailique Williams. 7-0 Georgia State with 11:53 left in the first quarter. LSU answered the Panthers driving 75 yards in seven plays, finishing with Jayden Daniels connected with Malik Nabers for an 18 yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:20 left in the opening period. Highlight of the drive was an electric 29 yard run up the middle by Daniels. The embarrassing defensive start for LSU continued as Georgia State moved the ball up the field before the Tigers defense was assisted by a Panthers' holding penalty that nullified a first down play and enabled LSU to finally get a stop. The Tigers took their first lead of the contest on their next possession on a 14 yard touchdown run by Jayden Daniels. The score ended a nine play, 53 yard drive as the first quarter came to an end. 14-7 Tigers. Georgia State continued to take advantage of LSU's pitiful defensive play as they quickly pulled even with the Tigers, 14-14 on a a 44 yard touchdown run up the far sideline to cap off a four play 75 yard drive. The LSU offense continued to do what they do best, score! As the Tigers drove 80 yards in seven plays culminating with a 27 yard lazer dart from Jayden Daniels to Kyren Lacy giving LSU a 21-14 lead with 10:00 left in the first half. The LSU defense finally came up with a huge stop, holding Georgia State on a 4th and seven. The turn over on downs gave the Tigers a first and ten at their own 30 yard line. It took LSU one play to extend their lead as Daniels hit Brian Thomas Jr. in stride for a 70 yard touchdown, putting the Tigers up 28-14 with 2:26 left in the second quarter. The Tigers were able to score one more time before the halftime break as Jayden Daniels found Kyren Lacy for a 13 yard touchdown, extending the LSU lead to 35-14 as the contest would head into the break. HEISMAN HALFTIME ALERT: Jayden Daniels finished the first half going 15-19 for 282 yards with four touchdown passes, while rushing for 57 yards on four carries with a rushing touchdown... LSU took the second half kickoff and marched 70 yards in eight plays, ending with a three yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Mac Markway, putting the Bayou Bengals up 42-14 with 11:00 left in the third quarter. Highlight of the drive was a nice 20 yard run to the Georgia State three yard line by Noah Cain. LSU increased their advantage to 49-14 on a one yard touchdown plunge by Jayden Daniels, his seventh of the game, (5 passing, 2 rushing). The score capped a 63 yard, eight play drive. LSU continued their onslaught on the Panthers as Jayden Daniels air it out deep, hitting Malik Nabers in the end zone for a 40 yard touchdown. The Tigers now led 56-14 after the five play 82 yard drive with 8:59 left in the contest. After a horrible start, the LSU defense picked up their level of play in the second half, keeping Georgia State scoreless the rest of the way. With the victory LSU is now 8-3 overall and 5-2 in SEC play. Next up LSU returns to Tiger Stadium to take on the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, November 25th. DA BOOT SPORTS SUPPORTS AUTISM AWARENESSDa Boot Sports 11/12/2023 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA- The SEC added another chapter to the history books on Saturday night when LSU defeated the Florida Gators 52-35 in front of a sold-out 102,321 paid-attendance crowd in Death Valley. The story of the game was offense or the lack of defense. LSU and Florida combined for 1,189 total yards of offense. Florida running back Trevor Etienne finished the night with three touchdowns on the ground, but LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels was the overwhelming star of the night. Daniels finished 17-26 through the air for 372 yards and three touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading rusher by a mile, as he added another 234 yards on the ground and found the end zone twice more. Daniels joined Johnny Manziel as the only two in SEC history to finish with over 200 yards, passing and rushing in the same game. He also became the first player in FBS history to record 350+ passing yards and 200+ running in the same game. Wideouts Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. are also both worth noting. They finished with six receptions each and tallied 132 and 150 yards, respectively. Thomas also hauled in two of Daniels’ touchdown passes. Florida won the coin toss and deferred the ball. Both teams came out aggressively on the opening drive, but LSU’s offense and the elite chemistry between Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers was on display early. The Tigers went 75 yards in 7 plays that took just over three minutes off the clock. Josh Williams, starting in place of the injured Logan Diggs, found paydirt with a 1-yard touchdown run to put LSU up 7-0. LSU’s poor defensive effort continues as they allow Florida to respond with a 9-yard TD pass on their first offensive series. Eugene Wilson III made the snag and finished running it in. The Tigers drove down the field on their next possession but were not fortunate this time. The Gator defense held up with a goal-line stand. LSU attempted four straight runs but could not punch it into the end zone. Florida couldn’t take advantage of their stout defense. The Tigers D proceeded to force a strip-sack on Graham Mertz and earn the takeaway. Tempers began to flare as the first quarter winded down, but neither side could put more points on the scoreboard. 7-7, headed to the second. LSU struck first in the second quarter. They faltered in the red zone and had to settle for three, as Ramos notched a 28-yard field goal, capping off a 79-yard drive and putting the Tigers up 10-7. With 8:34 to go in the half, LSU took over from their 15-yard line. They take possession after a Harold Perkins forced fumble on third down that Florida retained and punted away. It wouldn’t take long for them to score. LSU’s Heisman hopeful Jayden Daniels showed off his wheels as he scampered for an untouched 85-yard touchdown run that sent Death Valley into an absolute frenzy. The touchdown put the Tigers up 17-7. Controversial penalties and disgruntled players and fans were the story of the second quarter. LSU linebacker Andre Sam got ejected on a targeting call that drew jeers and boos alike from the LSU faithful. A few moments later, defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory got flagged for unnecessary roughness after the play. These calls extended Florida’s drive and led to an eventual 7-yard rushing TD by Trevor Etienne. The Gators drew within a score, 17-14. LSU would send a punt back to Florida before the clock ran down. LSU and Florida headed to the locker rooms with the Tigers up 17-14. The Tigers' defense came out of the break on a mission and forced a three-and-out. Jayden Daniels thanked their effort by leading a 6-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a Kaleb Jackson 5-yard rushing touchdown. LSU extended their lead to 10, going up 24-14 with 11:05 remaining in the third quarter. Florida bounced back with a 33-yard pass from Mertz to Ricky Pearsall and back-to-back long runs of 18 yards and 21 yards; the ladder resulted in a touchdown. This rush made the score 24-21 LSU. As if things couldn’t get worse, true freshman Jackson muffed the following kickoff, enabling Florida to take the lead on a 1-yard rush from Graham Mertz. Florida silenced the crowd in Tiger Stadium as they went up 28-24. Who needs running backs when your quarterback can do it all? Jayden Daniels put a definitive stamp on why he deserves to be at the Heisman ceremony at the bare minimum. “The Kid” bobbed and weaved his way through defenders for a 51-yard TD run, his second of the evening. Daniels put LSU back in front 31-28 with 6:09 to go in the third. Jayden Daniels connected with Brian Thomas Jr. for a deep 59-yard pass to set them up inside the Florida red zone after the Gators had to punt the ball away. LSU’s offense got their third red zone touchdown off a 6-yard pitch and catch from Daniels to running back Noah Cain. The Tigers’ lead grew to 10. Although Florida closed the third quarter driving the football, chants of L-S-U were deafening going into the fourth. The teams headed for a fantastic finish in Baton Rouge. Florida took just over four and a half minutes off the fourth quarter clock and capped off a 13-play drive with a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Etienne. Etienne would finish with three scores on the night. The Gators made it a three-point game, 38-35 LSU. Jayden Daniels drove the Tigers 75 yards down the field in just three plays. The LSU QB hooked up with Thomas Jr. for a 37-yard touchdown as the response. The second score through the air made it 45-35, Tigers. The offense would get the ball right back after LSU’s defense forced a turnover on downs on the ensuing Florida possession. LSU would rub salt in the wounds of Billy Napier’s Gators by scoring once more before the final horn sounded. The Tigers found Brian Thomas on a 7-yard TD catch, making it 52-35. It was an unbelievable night in Death Valley capped off with the playing of both schools’ alma maters as the remaining fans trickled out of Tiger Stadium. Weil TUSCALOOSA, AL - LSU traveled to Tuscaloosa hoping to come away with a win to put themselves in great shape for a possible return to the SEC Championship in Atlanta, but it wasn't in the cards as Alabama shut down the explosive LSU offense while dominating the Fighting Tigers defense to win 42-28. The LSU defense was pushed around and man handled by a very physical Alabama offense. Bama put up 42 points and 507 yards of total offense. 288 yards rushing and 219 through the air. The Bama offense finished the game 11-14 on third down conversions, keeping the Tigers' defense on the field for 33:33 of the ball game. Jayden Daniels' solid night of play sadly ended in injury on a late hit after throwing a pass from the pocket. He finished 15-24 for 219 yards with two touchdown passes, while rushing 11 times for 163 yards and a score. Malik Nabers led the Tigers with ten catches for 171 yards and a touchdown grab. Greg Penn III was the leading tackler for the LSU defense with ten total tackles. LSU showed Alabama that they were there to play, scoring on their opening possession going 85 yards on five plays, culminating with a 46 yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Malik Nabers. 7-0 Tigers with 9:46 left in the first quarter. The Crimson Tide responded with a five play 76 yard drive, ending with a 23 yard touchdown run by Jalen Milroe. Milroe scampered up the near sidelines to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:14 left in the opening quarter. The Tigers misfired on their next possession, as Damian Ramos missed a 46 yard field goal attempt after the offense drove 54 yards in eight plays. Alabama answered with a missed field goal attempt of their own on their next possession. After driving 42 yards in seven plays, Will Reichard missed his kick from 47 yards out as Bama still led 14-7 with 7:14 left in the first half. LSU then drove 71 yards in eight plays to tie the game on a nine yard touchdown run by Jayden Daniels. The score stood at 14-14 with 3:09 left in the second quarter. The Crimson Tide wasted little time regaining the lead as the went 74 yards in nine plays, scoring on a Jalen Milroe 21 yard touchdown run, his third rushing score of the game. The score put Bama up 21-14 with only 1:01 left in the first half. LSU responded with a 103 yard drive due to a personal foul penalty on the offense in only six plays, culminating with a 26 yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Kyren Lacy with only five seconds left on the clock. We would go to the half with both teams even at 21-21. LSU received the second half kickoff and took it to the house, driving 75 yards on nine plays with Josh Williams finishing things off with a great two yard touchdown run. On the run, Bama stuffed Williams up the middle, but he was able to bounce it outside and race into the corner of the end zone for the score. Damian Ramos split the up rights on the PAT giving the Bayou Bengals a 28-21 lead. The highlight of the drive was an incredible 30 yard completion down to the Bama 13 yard line from Daniels to Malik Nabors. It was a perfect throw and a fabulous catch. The back and forth shoot out continued as the Tide answered LSU's score on a 16 yard touchdown run by Roydell Williams. The score capped off a nine play 70 yard drive to once again tie the game. 28-28 with 7:30 left in the third quarter. The Alabama defense forced the first LSU punt of the game and made LSU pay for the offensive sputter, driving 68 yards in six plays, scoring on a Jaden Milroe 11 yard touchdown run, his fourth rushing score of the night to put the Crimson Tide up 35-28 with only 1:01 left in the third quarter. The LSU offense flinched for the second straight possession as on the first play of the fourth quarter, Jayden Daniels had his pass deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Terrion Arnold who returned the ball to the LSU 25 yard line. Alabama took advantage of the huge turnover as Jase McClellan scored on a ten yard touchdown run, giving the Crimson Tide a 42-28 lead wiith 13:01 left in the contest. Jayden Daniels was knocked out of the game on a late hit by Dallas Turner. The play looked to be targeting, but the officials only called a personal foul. The LSU offense lost its bite with Daniels in the injury tent. Garrett Nussmeier finished the game for LSU, failing to lead the Tigers to a score, finishing 5-10 for 53 yards. With the loss, the Tigers are now 6-3 overall and 4-2 in SEC play. The Tigers need to put this disappointing loss behind them and get ready for the Florida Gators. This team has a good chance to win their final three games, finish 9-3 and play in a decent Bowl Game. Next up, LSU will host Florida at home in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, November, 11th.
