Da Boot Sports 9/23/2023 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - It was another close and crazy contest with the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday night in Death Valley that the Tigers found a way to win, 34-31 in front of 99, 648 LSU fans. On a night when the defense struggled the LSU offense made the plays and won the ball game. Jayden Daniels had another great game after a slow start going, 20-29 for 320 yards and four touchdown passes while adding 36 yards on the ground. Logan Diggs lead the team in rushing with 97 yards on 14 carries, running hard all night long. Brian Thomas and Malik Nabers both had a huge night. Thomas finished with 133 yards on five catches with two touchdowns, while Nabers finished with 130 yards on eight grabs with two touchdowns. The Tigers finished the game with 509 yards of total offense. Arkansas got on the board first, driving 51 yards in 12 plays, finishing the drive with a 23 yard Cam Little field goal giving the Razorbacks a 3-0 lead with 5:56 left in the opening period. The Tigers looked to answer the Arkansas score, but after driving into Razorback territory, Jayden Daniels threw an interception to former Tiger Dwight McGlothern at the Hogs 30 who returned the ball to the Arkansas 45. LSU took the ball right back on the very next play as Andre Sam intercepted a KJ Jefferson pass at the LSU 31 yard line. The Tigers were unable to move the ball after the back-to-back turnovers, punting it back to the Hogs. Arkansas then drove 75 yards in 13 plays culminating in a 23 yard field goal, giving the Hogs a 6-0 lead with 6:33 left in the second quarter. The Tigers finally responded going 68 yards in eight plays, highlighted by Josh Williams' 41 yard run down to the Arkansas 19. LSU had to settle for a 24 yard field goal by Damian Ramos to cut the Razorback's lead in half, 6-3 with 4:02 left in the first half. Arkansas quickly answered LSU's score, going 75 yards in eight plays, scoring on a 19 yard touchdown pass from KJ Jefferson to Tyron Broden, increasing the Razorbacks advantage to 13-3. With only :48 seconds left in the first half, the LSU offense finally gave Death Valley a reason to roar as Jayden Daniels hit Brian Thomas Jr. in stride for a 49 yard touchdown to put the score at 13-10 as we would head into the half. LSU received the second half kickoff and wasted little time taking their first lead of the contest, marching 75 yards in only three plays as Jayden Daniels connected with Brian Thomas Jr. on a 49 yard touchdown. Thomas made an incredible catch of an under-thrown pass and then out raced the Arkansas secondary into the end zone. 17-13 Tigers with 14:00 left in the quarter. Just like in the second quarter, both teams continued to answer each other's scores as Arkansas responded to LSU's touchdown with a 53 yard drive that ended with a 40 yard field goal to pull the Hogs within a point, 17-16 with 5:44 left in the third. LSU would then drive 75 yards in nine plays, scoring on an eight yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Malik Nabers to increase the lead to 24-16 with only 1:40 left in the third period. Arkansas took their next possession into the final quarter and took full advantage of a break down in the LSU secondary. On 3rd and six from their own 41 yard line, KJ Jefferson escaped the pocket and spotted a wide open receiver running up the sidelines. Jefferson hit him in stride for 59 yard touchdown. The Hogs went for two and were successful to tie the game at 24-24 with 14:11 left in the contest. The Tigers once again came right back at the Razorbacks, driving 75 yards in nine plays to regain the lead on a beautiful 20 yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Malik Nabers. 31-24 LSU with 9:43 left in the game. The back and forth shoot out continued as Arkansas answered the Tigers by driving 75 yards in ten plays to once again tie the game. KJ Jefferson connected with Luke Hasz for an 11 yard touchdown. Before the Arkansas score it appeared that LSU had Arkansas stopped, forcing an incomplete pass on 3rd and 18, but Harold Perkins Jr. was called for roughing the passer giving the Hogs new life at the 11. LSU took the ball on their next possession and turned out the lights, as they methodically drove 72 yards in nine plays, eating 5:02 off the game clock to set up a Damian Ramos 20 yard field goal attempt with 11 seconds left. Ramos nailed the kick giving LSU a 34-31 lead with only 5 seconds remaining. Arkansas attempted a Hail Mary pass, but it was intercepted by Zy Alexander to clinch the victory. With the exciting win LSU is now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in SEC play. Next up, LSU will travel to Oxford to take on the (3-1/0-1) Ole Miss Rebels/Black Bears/LandSharks, whatever the heck they call themselves on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 5:00pm CST and will be carried on ESPN. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - On Friday, September 22nd LSU will unveil The Tiger Walk Display featuring former LSU offensive lineman Ruffin Rodrigue. Ruffin Adam Rodrigue Jr. played at LSU from 1986-1989 and was a force on the Tigers' offensive line. He was named an All-SEC Lineman and helped lead the Bayou Bengals to SEC Championships in 1986 and 1988. After graduating from LSU, he played for the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks of the World League of American Football until an injury ended his football career. After his football career he became known for opening Ruffino's restaurant in both Baton Rouge and Lafayette. Ruffin tragically passed away on November 24th, 2020 of a heart attack. He was 53. Rodrigue's display which will be named 'The Tiger Walk Monument' will stand at the top of Tiger Hill on North Stadium Drive. The ceremony will begin at 10:30am. Saturday's player walk down the hill will be dedicated to the memory of Ruffin Rodrigue. "Ruffin was the guy who bled purple and gold and grew up wanting to play for LSU." said former LSU center Nacho Albergamo. "His dad played at LSU FROM 1962-64 and he wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps and that's what he did. God Bless him." "He's missed. No one else could typify being at that Tiger Walk more than him because he was truly a Tiger." Ron Sancho said. "He was a great guy. Not a day goes by that I don't remember him. God Bless him, his wife and his kids." Once again the Ruffin Rodrigue 'Tiger Walk Monument' will be unveiled on Friday, September 22nd at 10:30am on top of Tiger Hill on North Stadium Drive where the LSU football team unloads off the buses to begin their Tiger Walk to Death Valley on game day. Weil BATON ROGUE, LA - LSU traveled to Starkville into cowbell hell-land and came away with an impressive 41-14 SEC victory. It was a complete team win with Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers having an incredible day along with a strong performance by the LSU defense. Daniels had a brilliant, record setting day, finishing with a LSU school record, completing 88.2% of his passes. He finished the game going 30-34 for 361 yards with two touchdown passes. He also added 64 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Malik Nabers ran wild through the Bulldog secondary finishing with 13 catches for 239 yards and two touchdown grabs. The defense played with hustle and heart all day long, dominating the Mississippi state offense as they made life miserable for State quarterback Will Rogers, sacking him four times and harassing him all game. LSU took early command of the contest, as the defense did a great job of shutting down the State offensive attack, while Jaden Daniels and the offense looked explosive. The Tigers drove 77 yards on 14 plays on their first possession, settling for a Damian Ramos 22 yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 6:36 left in the first quarter. Jayden Daniels and the LSU offense remained hot as they extended their lead to 10-0, going 70 yards in only four plays as Daniels hit Malik Nabers on a 26 yard touchdown in the far corner of the endzone. At this point in the game, Daniels was 13-13 for 128 yards passing and a touchdown. LSU took their next possession into the second quarter and added to their lead when Daniels found Nabers again, this time for a 33 yard touchdown. The drive covered 63 yards in eight plays. 17-0 Tigers with 14:11 left in the first half. The Tigers were hungry for more as they would drive 66 yards in only six plays, culminating with a one yard touchdown run by Josh Williams, giving LSU a 24-0 advantage with 3:24 left in the second quarter. The Bulldogs finally put a drive together, driving 72 yards on six plays, highlighted by Jo'quavious Marks' 52 yard run. Mississippi State finished off the possession when Lideatrick Griffin punched it into the end zone from nine yards out to cut the LSU lead to 24-7 with 50 seconds left on the clock. LSU would take an impressive 17 point lead, 24-7 into the locker room at the half time break. The Tigers opened the second half driving 53 yards on 11 plays, settling for a 41 yard field goal to extend the lead to 27-7. After the Tigers defense stopped State on downs, the LSU offense produced another nice scoring drive, going 63 yards in five plays, finishing with a five yard touchdown run by Jayden Daniels. 34-7, Tigers with 3:27 left in the third quarter. LSU would then go on probably their nicest drive of the contest, going 75 yards in 12 plays, ending with a one yard touchdown run by Jayden Daniels. The highlight of the drive was a beautiful 41 yard completion from Daniels to Malik Nabers down to the State one yard line. 41-7 Tigers! With Brian Kelly deciding to insert reserves into the game with a commanding lead, the Bulldogs were able to put a scoring drive together, going 58 yards on 10 plays, scoring on a four yard touchdown pass for garbage points. LSU now held a 41-14 lead with 4:26 left in the contest. The Tigers would run out the final 4:26 to clinch the huge road conference win. LSU (2-1 / 1-0) will return home next week to host the Arkansas Razorbacks. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm CST and the game will be carried on ESPN. They balled out in front of a crowd of 97,735, and aside from a shaky defensive first quarter, the Tigers dominated in every facet of the game while showing the true potential of this team. In a first quarter that ended much closer than most fans expected, the Tigers could not stop an aggressive attack from the Grambling State offense. LSU capped off a 77-yard opening drive with a 26-yard dime to Brian Thomas Jr. for a touchdown. A strong start from the Tigers was answered right back by Grambling as they went downfield at will, scoring a TD on an 83-yard drive. Another LSU TD and a field goal from Grambling left the scoreboard at 14-10 at the end of the first. Missed tackles, poor secondary coverage, and a lackadaisical defensive effort against a weaker competitor plagued the Tiger defense early on. Although that would be all the scoring Grambling could muster for the rest of the game. Grambling State accumulated 259 first-half yards on offense and scored twice in their three red zone trips. They finished the game with 320 yards, a drop-off after a night-and-day defensive performance from LSU. The Tigers also forced two takeaways in the second half. Grambling’s runs continued to stifle the Tigers, but the passing attack was minimal at best. The LSU offense was nearly perfect on the night as they scored touchdowns on 10/11 of their drives. The lone series that did not end in a score happened late in the game as LSU attempted to run the clock down but failed to reach the marker on a 4th & 5 deep in Grambling territory. Jayden Daniels propelled LSU to a 42-10 lead at halftime. His night would end there, finishing 18/24, throwing for 269 yards, and tossing 5 TDs to 4 different receivers. Daniels joined Joe Burrow as the only quarterbacks in school history to throw five touchdown passes in a half. The running back room stood out most of the game. A trio of Logan Diggs, Kaleb Jackson, and Josh Williams all finished the game averaging over five yards per carry. Noah Cain even got into the action late, finding paydirt and ripping off a 15-yard run. Strong running all night was impressive from the Tigers and will be a topic of conversation as we trek towards SEC play. Harold Perkins attacked the game early after laying the lumber on a Grambling receiver in open space. He also had a pass breakup in the first half. Perkins was a big name that did not make much of an impact in the loss to Florida State, so it was good to see him getting around on the field in this one. Defensively, there were not many impactful plays throughout the contest, but Maason Smith’s return provided good reps after an injury kept him out of last season. Coach Kelly spoke post-game and preached that LSU “played the right way.” Execution and clean football were on display versus Grambling State, with the Tigers only committing two penalties the entire game. No turnovers for LSU and efficient, high-energy drives were the keys to playing winning football for the Bayou Bengals. LSU opens conference play next week as they travel to Starkville and take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The game will be broadcast nationally on September 16 on ESPN at 11 a.m. CST. To say this was a disappointing start to the season for the Tigers would be an understatement. LSU looked like they’d start the game with a bang after getting into the red zone in three quick plays. However, a goal-line stand from the FSU defense kept the game scoreless and set the tone for the rest of the contest. LSU’s offense moved up and down the field, mustering five trips to the red zone. They could not take advantage of their offensive success, scoring just two touchdowns and a field goal in those opportunities. Although the final score tells a different story, LSU led and was in contention for most of the game. They went into the locker rooms with a 17-14 lead and trailed at the end of the third quarter by just a touchdown. A fourth-quarter defensive collapse from the Tigers and an onslaught by Jordan Travis and the ‘Noles offense led to FSU putting up 21 points in the final frame, nearly doubling their game score. In post-game press conferences, coach Brian Kelly spoke on his team’s effort in the game: “Execution in the first half, the inability to convert in the red zone. You know the second half didn’t play with a sense of urgency. You know those fall on coaching and getting our players to recognize and make those choices in practice.” The Tigers’ defensive backs were outmatched all night with tough matchups versus the FSU wide receivers. Opelousas native Keon Coleman led the way for the Seminoles with nine receptions for 122 yards and a trio of touchdown grabs. Coleman feasted all night, helping open up the playbook for Mike Norvell. Arizona St. transfer Johnny Wilson also contributed seven catches and eclipsed the 100-yard mark. When asked about the defensive challenges faced, Kelly said, “I thought we competed there… I don’t know that there was much more else that they could have done.” Kelly will discuss with his team and coaching staff to make adjustments and improvements this coming week in practice. There is still a lot of football to play in the 2023 campaign, but if LSU wants to make some noise and compete for titles, the turnaround has to start now. LSU will move on and play their home opener next Saturday, September 9th, in Tiger Stadium. Grambling State will take on the Tigers for the first time on the gridiron. You do not want to call any game a cakewalk, but LSU will use this game as an opportunity for change before starting SEC play. The game will begin at 6:30 pm CST and broadcast on ESPN+.
