Head coach Brian Kelly recently announced the recipients of the symbolic jerseys for the 2023 season. Junior defensive tackle, Mekhi Wingo, will don the number 18 this fall while offensive lineman, Will Campbell, was given the number 7 designation. Unfortunately, Campbell cannot actually wear no. 7 on the field due to NCAA rules and regulations regarding jersey numbers, so he will be an honorary “7” with a patch on his usual number 66. Neither of these achievements come as any surprise for those that keep up with LSU on the gridiron. Wingo attended this year’s SEC Media Day and represented the Tigers well in becoming a member of the SEC Football Leadership Council. He also earned AP All-America honors last season as a member of the third team. When asked about the number 18 and Mekhi, coach Kelly said, “The number 18 has great historical significance within our program… It’s worn by a player who represents the traits and spirit associated with a successful program and that’s Mekhi.” As for Campbell, the sophomore left tackle becomes the first lineman to be honored with the number 7 jersey. Kelly wanted to leave the legendary jersey with some Louisiana flair, and what better option than a Louisiana bred beast that protects your QB. Will Campbell stands at 6’6” and weighs in at 325 lbs. The Monroe native made the Freshman All-SEC team last season as well as earning a spot on the Second Team All-SEC squad. After having an already impressive freshman outing at LSU, Campbell will likely be looked upon as a player to stand out and make a huge impact this season. Kelly spoke and explained his decision with the number 7, “I like the significance of the left tackle because he is a playmaker who must protect the quarterback every play.” Campbell and Wingo join an notable list of players whom many have had significant time at the professional level with careers in the NFL. Many are hoping that the players in the trenches will continue that success and bring the fire for LSU this season. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers closed out their 2023 fall camp with a scrimmage on Saturday in Tiger Stadium. With camp now complete, Brian Kelly can now begin finalizing the depth chart and work on game preparation for their season opening contest against Florida State which is only 15 days away. Staff member, Michael Bacigalupi was able to observe the scrimmage from the press box with other members of the media and did a great job of covering the event. **No cameras were allowed for the scrimmage. After a typical warmup period and position drills, the team went into action with a 43 play scrimmage. Freshman running back Kaleb Jackson shined with two impressive scoring plays. One came when Jackson gathered in a screen pass from Garrett Nussmeier and took it 75 yards for a touchdown. His other score came on a nice 18 yard touchdown run. Jackson showcased his speed and power as he broke several tackles and out ran defenders. Kaleb Jackson looks to be the real deal and will be a very productive running back for the Bayou Bengals. The offensive line continues to look very solid. Here are some unofficial offensive stats::::: **Jayden Daniels:6-11 for 68 yds, 1-TD **Garrett Nussmeier: 5-8 for 113, 1-TD **Kaleb Jackson: 26 yards rushing on two carries, 1 rushing TD. He had one catch for a 75 yard TD. **Noah Cain: three carries for 14 yards. He had one catch for an 8 yard TD. **Malik Nabers: two catches for 17 yards **Mason Taylor: three grabs for 36 yards **Khai Prean: three catches for 25 yards Zy Alexander made a nice play when he stripped the ball away from Mason Taylor then recovered the fumble. Safeties Andre' Sam and Welton Spotsville each had an interception. Sage Ryan had to leave the scrimmage with what looked like an arm or shoulder injury. No official word on the injury but we have heard that a source reported it was only a stinger and the sophomore safety is okay. Maason Smith, Josh Williams, Armoni Goodwin and Logan Diggs are still nursing minor injuries and didn't participate in the scrimmage. Denver Harris returned to practice on Saturday. Expect to see a huge improvement in the return game for the special teams. Aaron Anderson, Jalen Brown, Javen Nicholas and Gregory Clayton Jr. all have shown they are reliable and have the potential to be dangerous punt and kickoff returners. This was the last day of access for the media until the season kicks off on September 3rd in Orlando. The Tigers will have a day off rest on Sunday after practicing for nine straight days before classes begin on Monday August 21st. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned to practice on Tuesday morning battling the extreme heat while working fast & furious to prepare for Sept. 3rd. It was another day for the offense to shine, as they dominated during 7 on 7 drills and during 11 on 11. The starting unit on the offensive line continues to be, LT: Campbell, LG: Dellinger, C: Turner, RG: Frazier RT: Jones.. Looking rock solid. Armoni Goodwin, Josh Williams and Logan Diggs didn't participate in practice as they were spotted on the stationary bikes. Noah Cain and John Emery Jr. had plenty of work with three teammates out of action. Jayden Daniels continues to show his leadership while displaying his improvement in the passing game. Showing nice accuracy with his throws. The receiving corp continues to shine making nice grabs while running crisp routes. Chris Hilton Jr. and Malik Nabers are such huge standouts. After a minor injury over the weekend, Maason Smith returned to practice but not full speed. No change at the linebacker position. Everyone looks good with great speed, power, talent and depth. The secondary is still a work in progress. The unit is slowly showing improvement but will definitely be a concern going into the season. Zy Alexander, Duce Chestnut and Ashton Stamps are all looking impressive. Looks like the secondary may have received another blow to its depth. Nothing official, but there is rumor that Denver Harris has been dismissed from the team or is facing some type of suspension. The highly rated five star defensive back out of North Shore High School in Harris County, Texas arrived in Baton Rouge via the transfer portal after having several behavior issues at Texas A&M. Rumor is he had a huge part in the ugly fight at practice last week, then attempted to carry it over into the locker room after. Harris was absent from practice on Monday and Tuesday and wasn't in the 2023 team photo taken. Brian Kelly is expected to address the issue after practice on Wednesday during his press conference. The Tigers will return to the practice field on Wednesday morning. Videos of player interviews are below.. Especially at running back where the position is super deep. The Bayou Bengals will practice everyday the rest of the week until their next day of rest on Sunday. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Bayou Bengals return to practice on Thursday after a much needed day of rest. The team continue to work hard preparing for the 2023 season as their first day in full pads saw them turn up the physicality of the practice sessions. Lineman went at it hard in blocking drills. It was great to hear the sounds of pads pounding in the air. We're getting close everyone! 24 days until the Tigers kickoff on September 3rd. The defensive backs turned it up a notch on Thursday, out battling the deep and talented group of LSU receivers. It was nice to see a defensive day since the offense has dominated in drills since fall camp has begun. Bad news for Ohio State defensive back transfer JK Johnson as he will be out indefinitely with a fractured left leg. The major injury to Johnson adds a sting to the depth in LSU's secondary. Other than Johnson's situation, the Tigers have been basically healthy for the first week of fall practice, except for a few minor bumps and bruises and some players struggling with the extreme heat. The Tigers will return to practice on Friday and Saturday before having a rest day on Sunday. Friday's practice will be closed to the media. Offensive Coordinator Mike Denbrock met with the media at the conclusion of the practice day. Video of his press conference is below. Da Boot Sports 8/8/2023 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - Unfortunately I was unable to attend practice for health issues on Tuesday as I continue to deal with side effects from my strokes. I apologize. There was no photography or videoing allowed on Tuesday. Only a media viewing day. So no photos or video clips to show today.. The Tigers will have a day of rest on Wednesday, which comes at a good time as some minor injuries and player problems dealing with the extreme heat continue to be an issue. The team has been splitting practice sessions up, practicing half the day indoors and then the other in the suffocating heat outdoors. The team will return to work on Thursday morning in full pads as they continue to prepare for the beginning of the 2023 season. Brian Kelly did hold a post practice press conference which is posted below for you to view... Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers return to the practice field on Monday morning after their Sunday rest day and put in another good Brian Kelly fast pace style workout. My staff photographer Michael Bacigalupi reported that the offense is looking really good. No doubt this will be a better football team in year two of the Brian Kelly era. Josh Williams and Logan Diggs are still splitting snaps with the first unit. Expect one of the two to be a starter. Noah Cain, John Emery and Armoni Goodwin will get playing time. The two freshman backs, Trey Holly and Kaleb Jackson continue to impress. The running back position is loaded. The wide receiver position is so deep and talented. If Malik Nabers draws double coverage it will open things up for Kyren Lacy and Brian Thomas Jr. who I expect to have a huge breakout season as a junior. Aaron Anderson is a huge addition and should contribute immediately. Looks like he may be the favorite to return punts. Jayden Daniels continues to show improvement on his deep throws. Nussmeier is improving on his decision making and has been throwing nice passes. At linebacker Harold Perkins and Omar Speights will be the starters. Greg Penn III looks impressive and will see playing time. The Weeks brothers, Will and Whit continue to show their talents and help add solid depth to the position. The defensive line has the opportunity to be a very powerful, dominating force. In the secondary, Duce Chestnut and Zy Alexander look to have a lock on the corner back starting positions currently. They are rotating a lot of bodies in the secondary. Tempers got as hot as the Louisiana heat during 11 on 11 drills as a huge ugly fight between the offense and defense broke out. The fight started after Harold Perkins and Kyren Lacy got into a scuffle. After the brawl ended some players were sent inside before practice continued. Brian Kelly seemed very disappointed while addressing the team after the fight. “We have to be able to maintain our emotions, while staying aggressive. It’s up to you all to figure that out, it’s not something that the staff can do for you. Respect your brother out here always.” ...... Practice then resumed for the final sessions. I'm sure the extreme heat has tempers short with the players, but fights like this one is a concern so close to the start of the season. We don't need someone getting injured from punches being thrown. A broken hand or broken jaw could end someone's season. The Tigers will practice again on Tuesday morning. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers hit the field for day two of fall practice, repeating Thursday routine as they began their day indoors. John Emery Jr. returned today and looked sharp. The running backs and wide receivers continue to impress. Both Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier continue to look good while making nice throws. So far Daniels looks to have definitely improved on his deep ball. Rickie Collins struggles with inconsistency on some of his passes, but is very talented. Improvement will come. Was only able to view the first 15 minutes of practice in the indoor facility. Should be able to view the entire practice on Monday.. There was no post practice press conference today. Saturday's practice is closed to the media. The Tigers will then have a rest day on Sunday before returning back to work on Monday. Watch for a practice video on Monday...
