Da Boot Sports 9/28/2021 LSU Sports Information By: Michael Bonnette BATON ROUGE – Senior linebacker Damone Clark has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in LSU’s 28-25 win over Mississippi State on Saturday in Starkville. Clark, a Baton Rouge native, had a career-best 15 tackles in the victory over the Bulldogs. He also scooped up a fumble and returned it 35 yards on Mississippi State’s first possession of the game, setting up LSU’s first touchdown of the contest. LSU never trailed in the game after taking a 7-0 lead following Clark’s fumble return. The Southern Lab product was instrumental in LSU’s defense limiting the Bulldogs to only a field goal on their first seven possessions of the game as the Tigers built a 28-10 lead. On its first seven possessions of the contest, Mississippi State was forced to punt three times, had two turnovers and missed a field goal. For the game, LSU’s defense was on the field for 88 plays, but still managed to hold Mississippi State’s high-powered passing offense to 25 points and only 5.5 yards per play. The longest play LSU gave up against the Bulldogs went for 29 yards. The honor is the first for Clark and marks the second straight week an LSU defender has been recognized by the league as a player of the week for the SEC. Last week, sophomore BJ Ojulari earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his 2.5 sack performance in the win over Central Michigan. LSU returns to action on Saturday, hosting 22nd-ranked Auburn for an 8 p.m. kickoff in Tiger Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN. 2021 LSU Football – Player of the Week Honors Player Game Honor BJ Ojulari Central Michigan SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week Damone Clark Mississippi State SEC Defensive Player of the Week

Da Boot Sports 9/28/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA: Football runs deep through his veins. His father had a 15 year NFL career and won a Super Bowl. His mother was a volleyball star at South Florida University. The 6'-5" 229lbs four star quarterback from Athens, Georgia found himself third on the depth chart when he arrived at LSU at the beginning of the 2020 season. However, the team's starter, Myles Brennan would be lost for the season due to injury and after a few brief appearances in relief of a struggling T.J. Finley, Johnson found himself named the starter for the final two games of the season. Max Johnson didn't disappoint. The true freshmen played like an experienced upperclassmen with leadership and poise. First was Florida in Gainesville. The hostile environment never rattled the young man as he would finish 21-36, for 239 yards passing, with 3 touchdowns while adding 52 yards rushing on 18 carries. Many of those rushing yards came on big scrambles for key first downs that kept scoring drives alive. When the clock ran out on that foggy Florida night, the 13th ranked Gators had fallen to LSU, 37-34. Next up for the 4-5 Tigers was the Ole Miss Rebels in Tiger Stadium. This earlier season contest had been rescheduled to the final game of the year due to COVID-19 problems within the Rebels program. Johnson picked up right where he left off in Gainesville, as he would lead the Tigers to an electrifying 53-48 victory in Death Valley. He would outgun Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral in the high scoring shootout, going 27-51, for 435 yards passing, with 3 touchdown passes and one interception. Once again, Johnson made several huge plays with his feet, rushing for 45 yards on 14 carries, including two rushing touchdowns. After the disappointing 5-5 season in 2020, the LSU football program was looking to bounce back to their winning ways. To everyone's surprise T.J. Finley would enter the transfer portal after finding himself third on the depth chart behind Max Johnson and Myles Brennan at the conclusion of spring camp. Several expected Myles Brennan who started the 2020 season, putting up Heisman type numbers through the first three games before his season ended, to win his starting position back. However, the weekend before fall practice would begin, Brennan would break his left arm in a freak accident while on a fishing trip. This incident would make Johnson the starter for the beginning of the 2021 season. The Tigers looked horrible in the season opener losing to UCLA on the road, but Johnson, offensive coordinator Jake Peetz, and passing game coordinator D.J. Mangus would slowly begin to gel. With a sputtering running attack and a offensive line struggling in pass protection, the offense would begin to go with a hurry up, fast tempo style that has helped open things up for the sophomore quarterback. So far Max Johnson's stats rank with the best in the NCAA as he has put up impressive numbers so far. After four games Johnson has completed 64.4% of his passes going 87-135 for 1,144 yards passing, 15 touchdown passes while only throwing three interceptions. He has a passing rating of 167.8 .... Yet, you hear no one in the national media speak of this young man and what he has accomplished so far. He is 5-1 as LSU's starting quarterback and has passed for three or more touchdowns in each of those six games. This Saturday LSU (3-1) will host the 3-1 Auburn Tigers in a huge SEC West contest. Look for #14 in the purple and gold to stay as cool as a cucumber and make the big plays to lead his Tigers to victory. There is a good chance we will see T.J. Finley at quarterback for Auburn at some point during the game. If so, it will be interesting to see who out plays who. Max Johnson has done nothing to put himself in jeopardy of losing the starting role to Myles Brennan once Brennan is able to return in a week or two. If this team can continue to make steady improvement from week to week, look for Johnson's numbers to steadily improve, putting himself into Heisman consideration. Could he become as good as Joe Burrow? Time will tell for this very talented and special young man. Another gem that LSU has landed.. Da Boot Sports 9/28/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil STARKVILLE, MS: Revenge minded LSU headed into Starkville on Saturday and came away with a 28-25 payback victory against the Bulldogs for last season's 44-34 embarrassing loss in Tiger Stadium. After a low scoring first half, both teams eventually turn the contest into a shootout late as the final five of six possessions ended with a touchdown. The LSU offense proved to be just as dangerous, if not more explosive then the Bulldogs Air-Raid attack, while the Tigers defensive game plan was to play with a three man front forcing State to beat them on the ground and with check down passes. The Bulldogs moved up and down the field with ease throughout most of the contest, but a couple of turnovers and a handful of LSU stops were just enough to hold on for the win. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and began to easily move the ball down the field with ease, but after driving 45 yards in six plays, Will Rogers would complete a pass in the flat to Malik Heath. Cordale Flott would come up and hit Heath immediately causing a fumble. Damone Clark picked up the ball and returned it 35 yards to the State 35 yard line. LSU was able to take advantage of the turnover, going 35 yards in nine plays, with Max Johnson hitting Kayshon Boutte in the end zone from 11 yards out for the score. Key play of the drive was a three yard gain by Ty Davis-Price on a 4th and one to keep the drive going. 7-0 Tigers with 9:04 to go in the first quarter. After the teams would trade punts, the Bulldogs would start a drive from their own 37 yard line. Once again, State moved quickly into LSU territory, but on a 2nd and five from the LSU 25, Cordale Flott would pick off Rogers at the Tigers 11 yard line to end the drive. Mississippi State would finally get on the scoreboard driving 80 yards in 14 plays settling for a 23 yard Nolan McCord field goal after the LSU defense would come up with a huge stop at their own two yard line. Both teams headed to the locker rooms at the half with LSU on top 7-3. LSU received the second half kickoff, then went Air-Raid on the Bulldogs. On the second play of the half, Max Johnson would find Kayshon Boutte on a deep slant for a 64 yard touchdown. LSU's explosive drive would go 75 yards on two plays taking only :38 seconds off the clock. 14-3 Tigers with 14:22 to go in the 3rd. Later in the 3rd quarter with 3:45 left on the clock, LSU added to their lead in electric fashion taking only one play. On 1st and ten from the their own 42 yard line, Max Johnson would find a very wide open Trey Palmer deep down the center of the field for a 58 yard touchdown. Palmer was so wide open due to a bust in the secondary that we was able to slowly back pedal the final ten yards into the end zone. Cade York added his third PAT of the day to give the Tigers a 21-3 advantage with 3:35 left in the 3rd. The Bulldogs had moved the ball well all game long between the 20s, but would struggle to put points on the scoreboard. However, State would finally find the end zone on their next drive. Will Rogers would find Makai Polk for a 29 yard touchdown. It took the Bulldogs eight plays to go 75 yards in 3:09 cutting the LSU lead to 21-10 to end the 3rd quarter. The game began to shape into a track meet as LSU continued to play explosive offense, with a little help on this possession. The drive actually stalled at the Tigers 37 yard line, but on 4th and 8 the Bulldogs committed a personal foul during the punt giving LSU new life to take advantage of. Three plays later Kole Taylor would catch a pass that looked to be intended for a covered Kayshon Boutte, then rumbled 41 yards up the far sidelines for a touchdown. 28-10 Tigers with 11:32 left in the contest. The late second half track meet would continue as Mississippi State would refuse to quit, battling back to score again. The Bulldogs would march 75 yards in 12 plays, ending the drive with Rogers hitting Austin Williams in the end zone for a 2 yard touchdown. The PAT was good, as State would pull to within 28-17 with 6:48 remaining. The Bulldogs would end up scoring on their third straight possession after a LSU three and out. With the LSU defense beginning to look tired, Will Rogers again led his team on another 12 play drive, culminating with a Rogers to Jo'guavious Marks 16 yard touchdown pass. State would convert the 2 point conversion attempt to trim the Tigers lead to three, 28-25 with 1:52 left in the game. The Bulldogs would attempt on-side kick, but the ball never traveled the ten plus yards necessary with a Bulldog player touching the ball first. Mike Leach challenged the play but lost, which used up his final timeout allowing LSU to simply lineup in victory formation and kneel the clock down to zero. The Tigers did what they needed to secure the win, improving their record to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in SEC play. The defense continues to show improvement under defensive coordinator Daronte Jones who installed a nice game plan. LSU's passing attack at times resembles the 2019 offense, but they still CAN'T run the football. You will unlikely find success against Florida, Alabama, or Arkansas if you're one-dimensional. Another concern is the injuries that have been mounting up at certain positions. Max Johnson continues to play well as he finished the game, 17-27 for 280 yards, with 4 touchdowns and 1 INT. Ty Davis-Price was the team's leading rusher today carrying 13 times for 51 yards. Both Corey Kiner and Armoni Goodwin saw limited action but need to see the field much more. Several receivers made big plays in the game. Kayshon Boutte had 4 catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns... Trey Palmer had 1 catch and it was for a 58 yard touchdown... Kole Taylor had 1 catch for a 41 yard touchdown that ended up being the difference in the game... Brian Thomas had 43 yards on three grabs. On defense Damone Clark had a monster game with 15 tackles... Micah Baskerville totaled 11 tackles... Major Burns finished with 9 tackles,... while Cordale Flott had 8 tackles, and made two of the biggest defensive plays of the game, forcing a huge fumble and pulling in an interception,... and Ali Gaye racked up 6 tackles and a sack... The Tigers (3-1) return home next Saturday to take on the 3-1 Auburn Tigers in another huge SEC West matchup. Kickoff is set for 8:00pm CST and will be televised on ESPN. Da Boot Sports 9/24/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA: Coach Ed Orgeron met with the media after Thursday's practice to talk about and answer questions about Mississippi State, the Tigers opening SEC opponent on the road this weekend. Top news mentioned is that Derek Stingley Jr. is very questionable for Saturday after going down with an injury in Wednesday's practice. Orgeron stated that he reaggrevated the same injury that kept him out most of fall camp. Another area with cause for concern is on the offensive line at left tackle. “We’re still going to look at it. We’re going to make a game day decision. Garrett Dellinger, Anthony Bradford are the two guys fighting for it right now. Cam Wire practiced a little bit today, but we’ll see how well he is on Saturday morning.” The Tigers will need to put pressure on Bulldogs sophomore quarterback, #2 Will Rogers who has been protected well so far this season. He has only been sacked six times in the first three contest, while LSU leads the nation in sacks and tackles for loss, making the battle in the trenches the key matchup of the game. Even with Stingley likely out of the game, LSU still has a very talented secondary. It will be up to defensive coordinator Daronte Jones to have a solid game plan to apply pressure on the passer, while mixing up coverages to try and confused Rogers. I don't see either team running the football effectively in this one. The revenge minded Tigers have had to hear about State's Air-Raid attack all week long, with not many speaking much about Max Johnson or the LSU passing attack. Look for the Tigers to flex their defensive muscles while out passing the Bulldogs to victory in this one. PREDICTION: LSU 38, Miss State 24 Da Boot Sports 9/22/2021 By: Terrill J. LSU had previously announced its non-conference schedule for 2022, one that includes a Labor Day Weekend game against Florida State in the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, September 4. Other non-conference games for the Tigers in 2022 include the school’s first meeting with Southern University on September 10 in Tiger Stadium as well as other home games against New Mexico (September 24) and UAB (November 19). LSU opens SEC play on Saturday, September 17, against Mississippi State in Tiger Stadium. In October, the Tigers travel to face Auburn on the first Saturday of the month, followed by Tennessee visiting Death Valley on October 8. It will be Tennessee’ first trip to Tiger Stadium since 2010 when LSU held off the Vols for a 16-14 victory. LSU faces Florida in Gainesville on October 15 and then plays host to Ole Miss the following weekend in Tiger Stadium. LSU has an open date on October 29 before hosting Alabama on November 5. LSU closes out its 2022 SEC schedule with road games against Arkansas on November 12 and Texas A&M on November 26. Da Boot Sports 9/20/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA: Plenty breaking news to report from Tigerland today... We'll start with the bad first... Coach Orgeron confirmed on Monday that senior defensive end Andre Anthony will be lost for the remainder of the 2021 season due to a serious knee injury that occurred the first half of the Central Michigan contest. "What an outstanding Tiger, outstanding leader," Orgeron said. "We absolutely love him, he has a season ending injury and it's sad news. He was having a good season, he's gonna be unavailable but he's gonna be with us." Anthony is a sixth year senior who has been a leader on the defense for the past two seasons. He was having an All-SEC type of season thus far, with 3.5 sacks over the first two weeks, and then before his injury Saturday night, returned a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown. No word yet on if this will end his LSU career or if he may try to land an medical redshirt and return. The League Office announced on Monday that LSU defensive end BJ Ojulari has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week for his performance in LSU’s 49-21 win over Central Michigan. Through three games, Ojulari has recorded 4.5 sacks, which leads the nation along with Andre Carter (Army) and Jermaine Johnson (Florida State). The honor is the second of Ojulari’s career as he was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week last year for his play in LSU’s win over South Carolina. The SEC also announced on Monday that the LSU vs. Auburn game in Tiger Stadium on Oct. 2 will kickoff at 8:00pm and will be televised on ESPN. Coach Orgeron had his weekly "Tell the Truth Monday" press conference with the media on Monday. A video of the press conference is below for your viewing.... GEAUX TIGERS!!!!! Da Boot Sports 9/19/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA: LSU showed improvement Saturday night against Central Michigan, but Ed Orgeron knows they still have a long way to go. "We made some improvement tonight." Orgeron said. "For the most part we played a pretty good game. There are a lot of things we still need to get better at." Below are videos of post-game interviews after Saturday night's 49-21 victory over Central Michigan. The non-conference tune up games are complete and now the LSU football team will begin SEC play this Saturday on the road in Starkville. Mississippi State (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season last week, falling to Memphis 31-29 at the hands of a questionable officials call. The SEC admitted that it was an officiating error on a punt return that Memphis returned for a touchdown that ended up being the difference in the ball game. LSU should head into the contest revenge-minded after last season's embarrassing 44-34 loss in Tiger Stadium. GEAUX TIGERS!!! QB - Max Johnson TE - Jack Bech CB - Derek Stingley Jr. LB - Damone Clark DE - B.J. Ojulari Da Boot Sports 9/19/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA: LSU took a step in the right direction on Saturday night against Central Michigan, showing improvement in their play as they dominated the Chippewas with a 49-21 victory in Tiger Stadium. The LSU defense held Central Michigan, who came into the contest averaging 238 yards rushing per game to only 56 yards on the ground. Then put heavy pressure on Chippewas quarterback Jacob Sirmon all game long sacking him five times. Offensively the Tigers ran a no-huddle, up-tempo offense which had Max Johnson getting rid of the ball much quicker and using the short passing game as a substitute for a still weak running game. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and wasted little time as the offense would go fast with a no huddle. Max Johnson would find Deion Smith deep in the corner of the end zone for a 28 yard touchdown. The ball was slightly under thrown, but Smith made a fantastic catch over the defender for the score. The scoring drive took 8 plays to go 65 yards in 3:12. .. 7-0 Tigers... LSU would score again four plays later. Sirmon would complete a swing pass to Darius Bracy. Derek Stingley hit Bracy immediately, forcing a fumble. Andre Anthony then scooped up the ball and race 33 yards down the far sidelines for the touchdown. York would convert the PAT for a 14-0 LSU lead with 10:05 left in the first quarter. The Tigers continued to play aggressive adding to their first quarter lead. Starting on their own 37, Max Johnson would move the offense 63 yards in only three plays, hitting Deion Smith for a 40 yard touchdown. 21-0 Tigers with 1:52 left in the quarter. Central Michigan would answer the LSU score quickly. A break down in the LSU secondary would leave Chippewas' wide receiver JaCorey Sullivan running wide open down the far sideline. Sirmon would find him for a 78 yard touchdown to cut the LSU lead to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. With 11:58 to go in the half, the Tigers would start another scoring drive from their 35 yard line. We would finally see signs of a running game as Corey Kiner would begin to find some room to run. The Tigers mixed it up well on the drive with short effective runs and a nice short passing attack, driving 65 yards on 12 plays ending with Johnson finding Kayshon Boutte for a 2 yard touchdown. 28-7 Tigers with 6:54 to go in the half. The LSU defense would continue to dominate the Central Michigan offense, shutting down their running game and putting constant pressuring Jacob Sirmon. LSU would put another score on the board and do it in electrifying fashion. Starting at their own 8 yard line, Max Johnson would find Jack Bech for a 31 yard gain to the 39 yard line. Still going no huddle, Johnson would drop back to throw and find Brian Thomas Jr. streaking down the far sideline for a 41 yard completion to the Chippewas 20. Staying Up-tempo the Tigers rushed to the line, quickly snapping the ball to Johnson who would throw into the far corner of the South end zone to Jack Bech who would reach up over the defender, pulling in the ball for an incredible one handed touchdown grab.... 35-7 Tigers with 2:15 to go in the first half and would be our halftime score. The Tigers continued flexing their muscles early in the second half, beginning their first drive of the 3rd quarter deep in their own territory at the 7 yard line. Nine plays and 93 yards later, the Tigers would increase their lead to 42-7 with Johnson hitting Devonte Lee over the middle for a 21 yard touchdown. Key plays in the drive came when Johnson would find Boutte for a nice 15 yard gain on a 3rd and five from the Tigers' 15 yard line. On the next play Deion Smith would make an incredible adjustment to a back shoulder throw, catching Johnson's pass along the sidelines, keeping a foot in for a huge 18 yard pick up. Three plays later on a 3rd and ten, Smith made another fantastic grab for 34 yards down to the CMU 21 yard line. Max Johnson would make his first mistake of the contest on the Tigers' next possession. Facing a 3rd and six at their own 14 yard line, Johnson would be picked off by Devonni Reed who returned the interception 20 yards for a touchdown. 42-14 with 5:41 left in the 3rd quarter. The Tigers final score of the contest would come on a 6 play, 75 yard drive with Garrett Nussmeier running the offense. But the drive belonged to running back Corey Kiner who handled the ball on five of the six plays. He started the drive off stiff arming a defender to the ground on an outstanding 26 yard gain. Then finishing the drive off with an impressive five yard touchdown run, spinning away from a defender before trotting into the end zone. Great job by the Tigers' offensive line also, as they blocked well opening up nice holes for Kiner. LSU finally showed signs of life on Saturday night. For the first time this season, they played like a prepared, focused team. The defense was dominate again for the second straight week and the offensive line showed improvement in their pass protection. The no-huddle, up-tempo offense was executed well all night. Overall it was refreshing to see LSU play well and defeat an inferior opponent with ease as expected. It was exactly what the Tigers needed heading into SEC play next weekend. Max Johnson finished 26-35 for 372 yards passing, 5 touchdowns with 1 interception Corey Kiner was the team's leading rusher for the second game in a row as he had 74 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Deion Smith had a career night, leading the team with 153 yards receiving on 5 catches and 2 touchdowns. Jack Bech had a fantastic game with 5 catches for 81 yards, and a touchdown. Defensively, Damone Clark, Micah Baskerville, and Nav Strong lead the team in tackles with six each. The Tigers ended up forcing two turnovers and registering five sacks on the night. Next up the Tigers will travel to Starkville on Saturday, Sept. 25th to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 11:00am and will be carried on ESPN.... GEAUX TIGERS!!! Weil BATON ROUGE, LA: Ed Orgeron met with the media on Thursday after practice to answer questions and discuss Saturday's upcoming contest against Central Michigan. Orgeron as usual was happy with the preparation for the week, mentioning that it was a tremendous, spirited week of practice and several players will return from injury this week. The entire offensive line will be available this week except for Cam Wire. Armoni Goodwin may miss Saturday so there is a good chance that Tre' Bradford may see some action. The Tigers will take on a much tougher opponent this week with Central Michigan (1-1) coming into Tiger Stadium. Chippewas Head Coach Jim McElwain brings a well coached team into Baton Rouge who in week one gave Missouri all they could handle, just falling short of an upset, 34-24. They, like LSU are coming off of their first victory of the season, a 45-0 win over Robert Morris. "I think we're growing; I think we're growing as a program," said McElwain, who is in his third year in charge of the program. "You go out and you compete, and you compete at your highest level, it doesn't matter against who the opponent is. Their offense is lead by a very talented sophomore quarterback, #3 Jacob Sirmon who has completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 405 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions so far this season. But has been sacked 11 times already, which could be a problem against a LSU defense that showed improvement last week against an outmanned McNeese team, sacking Cody Orgeron eight times. (Tigers have 12 sacks on the season). Sirmon's top targets to watch for are #6 Dallas Dixon (10 rec. 156 yds. 2 TDs) and #11 JaCorey Sullivan (10 rec. 136 yds. 3 TDs). #88 Kalil Pimpleton is also a very talented wide out and dangerous return man. The Chippewas are averaging 238 yards rushing per game so far this season. They have a deep stable of running backs lead by #7 Lew Nichols who has rushed for 218 yards in two games. The Central Michigan defense is ranked 40th in the nation in scoring defense by allowing 17 points per contest on the year. But they haven't forced a turnover yet this season. They also have struggled with their pass rush, only registering two sacks so far. McElwain has done a great job improving the program at Central Michigan, but simply can't match the Tigers talent. If the LSU defense can shut down the Chippewas' running attack, look for them to have another game with a high sack total. Offensively, LSU must have success running the football, especially on short yardage situations. If the offensive line can give Max Johnson time, look for the Tigers to put up huge numbers through the air. LSU has no excuse not to dominate this opponent for their second win of the season before SEC play begins next week.
