Da Boot Sports 11/4/2023 By: Terrill J. Weil TUSCALOOSA, AL - LSU traveled to Tuscaloosa hoping to come away with a win to put themselves in great shape for a possible return to the SEC Championship in Atlanta, but it wasn't in the cards as Alabama shut down the explosive LSU offense while dominating the Fighting Tigers defense to win 42-28. The LSU defense was pushed around and man handled by a very physical Alabama offense. Bama put up 42 points and 507 yards of total offense. 288 yards rushing and 219 through the air. The Bama offense finished the game 11-14 on third down conversions, keeping the Tigers' defense on the field for 33:33 of the ball game. Jayden Daniels' solid night of play sadly ended in injury on a late hit after throwing a pass from the pocket. He finished 15-24 for 219 yards with two touchdown passes, while rushing 11 times for 163 yards and a score. Malik Nabers led the Tigers with ten catches for 171 yards and a touchdown grab. Greg Penn III was the leading tackler for the LSU defense with ten total tackles. LSU showed Alabama that they were there to play, scoring on their opening possession going 85 yards on five plays, culminating with a 46 yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels to Malik Nabers. 7-0 Tigers with 9:46 left in the first quarter. The Crimson Tide responded with a five play 76 yard drive, ending with a 23 yard touchdown run by Jalen Milroe. Milroe scampered up the near sidelines to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:14 left in the opening quarter. The Tigers misfired on their next possession, as Damian Ramos missed a 46 yard field goal attempt after the offense drove 54 yards in eight plays. Alabama answered with a missed field goal attempt of their own on their next possession. After driving 42 yards in seven plays, Will Reichard missed his kick from 47 yards out as Bama still led 14-7 with 7:14 left in the first half. LSU then drove 71 yards in eight plays to tie the game on a nine yard touchdown run by Jayden Daniels. The score stood at 14-14 with 3:09 left in the second quarter. The Crimson Tide wasted little time regaining the lead as the went 74 yards in nine plays, scoring on a Jalen Milroe 21 yard touchdown run, his third rushing score of the game. The score put Bama up 21-14 with only 1:01 left in the first half. LSU responded with a 103 yard drive due to a personal foul penalty on the offense in only six plays, culminating with a 26 yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Kyren Lacy with only five seconds left on the clock. We would go to the half with both teams even at 21-21. LSU received the second half kickoff and took it to the house, driving 75 yards on nine plays with Josh Williams finishing things off with a great two yard touchdown run. On the run, Bama stuffed Williams up the middle, but he was able to bounce it outside and race into the corner of the end zone for the score. Damian Ramos split the up rights on the PAT giving the Bayou Bengals a 28-21 lead. The highlight of the drive was an incredible 30 yard completion down to the Bama 13 yard line from Daniels to Malik Nabors. It was a perfect throw and a fabulous catch. The back and forth shoot out continued as the Tide answered LSU's score on a 16 yard touchdown run by Roydell Williams. The score capped off a nine play 70 yard drive to once again tie the game. 28-28 with 7:30 left in the third quarter. The Alabama defense forced the first LSU punt of the game and made LSU pay for the offensive sputter, driving 68 yards in six plays, scoring on a Jaden Milroe 11 yard touchdown run, his fourth rushing score of the night to put the Crimson Tide up 35-28 with only 1:01 left in the third quarter. The LSU offense flinched for the second straight possession as on the first play of the fourth quarter, Jayden Daniels had his pass deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Terrion Arnold who returned the ball to the LSU 25 yard line. Alabama took advantage of the huge turnover as Jase McClellan scored on a ten yard touchdown run, giving the Crimson Tide a 42-28 lead wiith 13:01 left in the contest. Jayden Daniels was knocked out of the game on a late hit by Dallas Turner. The play looked to be targeting, but the officials only called a personal foul. The LSU offense lost its bite with Daniels in the injury tent. Garrett Nussmeier finished the game for LSU, failing to lead the Tigers to a score, finishing 5-10 for 53 yards. With the loss, the Tigers are now 6-3 overall and 4-2 in SEC play. The Tigers need to put this disappointing loss behind them and get ready for the Florida Gators. This team has a good chance to win their final three games, finish 9-3 and play in a decent Bowl Game. Next up, LSU will host Florida at home in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, November, 11th.
