Da Boot Sports 4/21/2024 By: Terrill J. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - Many of you know who Ron Sancho is... The younger generation may not. Ron Sancho was one of the best players to ever wear the purple & gold... Period... A four year starter at outside linebacker from 1985-1988, Sancho was a playmaking machine, always around the ball. A nightmare for the opposing offense. He earned Honorable Mention All-American and 2nd Team All-SEC after recording 77 tackles, 10 TFL, and 5 sacks in 1988. Ron was selected in the 7th round of the 1989 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, but didn't make the team's final cut. A huge mistake by KC. He went on to play for the Denver Broncos in 1990. The WLAF New York-New Jersey Knights selected Sancho during the 2nd round of the league’s positional draft in 1991. He would go on to record a banner year for the team scoring three defensive touchdowns, (recovering a fumble against Frankfort in the end zone, blocking and recovering a punt against Montreal, and returning a fumble 14 yards against the Skyhawks). The Knights went on to lead the league with eight defensive touchdowns that season behind Sancho's impressive season. He finished second on the team with 69 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and 6 sacks. His nose for the end zone earned Sancho Second Team All World Honors in 1991. Ron returned to the Knights for the 1992 season where he’d add another four sacks to his career totals, but the league under pressure from the NFL owners elected to suspend the operations of the WLAF. Sancho retired from football in 1993 and currently owns his own company- Cardio Health Solutions LLC. We have been truly blessed here at Da Boot Sports to have him as our publication's sponsor. If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing Ron Sancho play football for LSU, please enjoy the video below that we created in his honor. Thank You Ron! You're a great person and a true Tiger! Da Boot Sports 4/13/2024 LSU Sports Communications By: Michael Bonnette BATON ROUGE – Junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier completed all seven of his passes, two going for touchdowns, to highlight LSU’s performance here at the National L Club Spring Game in Tiger Stadium. The scrimmage featured a unique scoring format for the defense as points were awarded for forcing a turnover, fourth-down stops, sacks, tackles for loss and pass breakups. The game ended in a 34-34 tie with the offense scoring four touchdowns and a pair of field goals. The defense scored points with two fourth-down stops, seven sacks, 13 tackles for loss and a pass breakup. There were no turnovers in the contest that featured 68 offensive snaps. “For me these are opportunities to flip from 14 preparations and practices to one performance and I wanted to see how guys handled that,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “There’s a big difference between a practice player and a guy that comes out and performs. It’s Tiger Stadium, there’s a history and tradition here so I want to see guys that can flip that switch and get in the right zone and play this game at a high level. “I want to see guys handle this as ‘I’m locked in and focused, I’m treating this like a real game opportunity’. I think some guys did that. Harold Perkins did a really nice job of working in the box. We were purposeful in running the ball at him and making him defend and get over the top of a veer block of a tackle. That was really good to see.” Perkins had three tackles and a sack for a 2-yard loss during the contest. “The other thing we highlighted was the running game and how important that is with our offensive line to exert our will and I thought I saw that,” Kelly said. “The tenets that we talked about leading up to this game, I saw a lot of them.” Sophomore Kaleb Jackson led all running backs with 59 yards on 14 carries. He scored on a 32-yard run in the first quarter. “You also saw the things that we have to get better at,” Kelly said. “We can’t let the ball over our head. We had some coverage mistakes. Those can’t continue to happen. We have to continue to evaluate and recruit at the defensive tackle position. That’s a must. “I like what our edges are doing. We are getting good pressure from the edge, but we have to be really stout inside.” LSU quarterbacks combined to complete 21-of-34 passes for 371 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Nussmeier led all quarterbacks with 187 passing yards. Rickie Collins completed 6-of-12 passes for 52 yards, AJ Swann was 4-of-9 for 55 yards and Colin Hurley was 4-of-6 for 77 yards and a TD. Nussmeier connected with transfer Zavion Thomas on a 45-yard touchdown pass on the first possession of the game and then found Kyren Lacy with a 59-yard TD later in the first quarter. Other scoring for the offense came on a 64-yard TD pass from Hurley to Khai Prean. Damian Ramos kicked a 23-yard field goal, while Aidan Corbello converted on a 37-yard attempt. Austin Ausberry paced the defense with seven tackles, while Gabriel Reliford had 3.5 tackles for loss, inc Photos Below By: Michael Bacigalupi Photos Below By: Jonathan Mailhes Photos Below By: Paige Luper John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. The annual event had LSU’s top players showcase their skill sets and elite talents in front of a record number of NFL personnel as well as over 125 credentialed media members. The star-studded LSU draft hopefuls were led by projected first-round picks: quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. A number of high-profile scouts, coaches, and front office officials were on site to see what the players had to offer. Some notable names in attendance include: Brian Daboll (Head Coach- New York Giants,) Dan Quinn (Head Coach- Washington Commanders,) Dennis Allen (Head Coach- New Orleans Saints,) Jerod Mayo (Head Coach- New England Patriots,) and many others representatives from all 32 NFL teams. Malik Nabers stole the show and was the highlight on many takes as he showed his capabilities in numerous individual drills as well as earning high marks in measurables. Nabers finished his day with a 42” vertical jump, 10’9” broad jump, 4.35 40-yard dash, and 15 reps on the bench press. The projected WR1 showed off his freak athleticism before even running his first route, catching passes from Daniels. LSU’s other participants in Pro Day were: Maason Smith (DL), Omar Speights (LB), Ovie Ogoufo (DL), John Emery Jr. (RB), Andre Sam (DB), Mekhi Wingo (DL), Jay Bramblett (P), Noah Cain (RB), Charles Turner III (OL), Gregory Clayton Jr. (WR), Jordan Jefferson (DL). Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - The Tigers practiced outdoors on Saturday morning as they continue to improve, gel and prepare for the 2024 season. They worked on individual and full team drills. with some 11 on 11 battles. The buzz on the backup quarterback competition continues as Brian Kelly hopes to settle on his #2 at some point soon. Look forward to a break out season by Kyren Lacy. He was joined by Chris Hilton Jr. and Aaron Anderson, working with the first unit on offense. Position battles continue to heat up as the Tigers work their way through the spring camp which will culminate with the spring game in Tiger Stadium on Saturday, April 13th. TBD. After the disaster last season that was the defense, which no doubt cost LSU a possible national championship run, everyone has high hopes for drastic improvement on that side of the ball. New defensive coordinator Blake Baker has brought energy to the defensive unit. The big buzz is now on a new position that he calls the "Star"... Major Burns has been working in the 'Star' spot which looks to be a rover type position. “The star gives you a lot more versatility in your defensive structure,” Kelly said. “A guy that can play man coverage, a guy that can blitz, a guy that can play zone coverage, a really good tackler, athletic in space. Also a guy that’s rugged enough that if you put a tight end he can handle himself at the line of scrimmage.” On Saturday Ashton Stamps and Javien Toviano continue to work with the first unit at cornerback. Jardin Gilbert, who transferred to Baton Rouge from Texas A&M and Sage Ryan are the first unit safeties at the moment. Ryan was everywhere on Saturday, making several big plays, including a pick six. It was great to see Emery Jones return to practice on Saturday. Video of Brian Kelly's post practice press conference is below.... John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Weil BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU returned to the practice field for practice five of spring camp. It was the second time the media was allowed to attend for a 20 minute viewing session. Practice once again took place in the indoor facility. As expected Garrett Nussmeier ran the first unit offense looking strong and accurate. The battle for the number two quarterback position seems to be heating up between AJ Swann and Rickie Collins. Both are competing hard and showing their talents well. Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton Jr. and Kyle Parker were the first unit wide outs. Lacy looks to be Nussmeier's favorite target so far. Josh Williams ran with the first unit while Kaleb Jackson took snaps with the second. They are both LSU's top backs and only scholarship running backs. The position is running on the thin side with experience for spring camp. Starting right tackle Emery Jones was MIA at practice as Tyree Adams stepped in to replace him. Left tackle Will Campbell, left guard Garrett Dellinger, center DJ Chester and right guard Miles Frazier joined Adams on the first unit offensive line. Mason Taylor was the starter at tight end, with Mac Markway ran with the second unit. No surprise that Harold Perkins and Greg Penn are taking snaps as first unit linebackers. The talented Weeks brothers, West and Whit are taking snaps with the second team. We are all expecting improvement in the secondary. Ashton Stamps and Javien Toviano are taking snaps as the starting cornerbacks. Jeremiah Hughes, JK Johnson and Jyaire Brown are getting a good look at the corner position. Jardin Gilbert is taking first team snaps at safety. Sage Ryan will once again be a huge part of the secondary, no doubt about that. The defensive line looks to be an early concern, lacking depth. This unit will be a work in progress. LSU made a few players available to the media after practice. Video footage is below..... John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. Similar to the 2024 SEC football schedule, in 2025 teams will play eight league games plus one required opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 or major independent. SEC schools will play the same league opponents in 2025 that they are scheduled to face in 2024. LSU will host Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M in Tiger Stadium in 2025 and will travel to face Alabama, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt. LSU’s non-conference games in 2025 has the Tigers traveling to face Clemson on August 30 followed by home games against Louisiana Tech on September 6 and Western Kentucky on November 22. “Continuing with our current format for the 2025 season provides additional time to understand the impact of the changes happening around us as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for SEC football scheduling,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. The full schedule of dates of games for the 2025 football season will be announced at a later time. The 2025 schedule format was approved by a vote of the SEC Presidents and Chancellors last week following a recommendation from the league’s Athletics Directors. The 2025 season will be the second year that the SEC Championship Game will feature the top two teams in the 16-team Conference standings at the end of the regular season. Beginning with the 2024 season, the SEC will eliminate divisional standings. John 14:6 - "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." The quarterbacks look sharpe, especially Garrett Nussmeier who is expected to lead the offense in 2024. Rickie Collins, who took snaps with the second team looks to have improved on his accuracy and showed flashes of his mobility. Newcomer AJ Swann led the third team and it was great to see Colin Hurley on the field wearing #16. The running backs showed speed and quickness during their position drills. Kaleb Jackson and Josh Williams will lead this group into the season. Trey Holly was absent due to his legal situation. The wide outs worked on making cuts and catching the ball out of the break. Kyren Lacy and Chris Hilton look to be the leaders of this squad. The offensive line focussed of foot work and technique.. We spotted Will Campbell wearing #7 today at practice, representing his team honor. Campbell looks fast, agile and menacing. He's a hell of a specimen. I apologize for no defensive information. That's one of three felony charges he's facing tied to a shooting last week in Farmerville, Louisiana. Sheriff Dusty Gates of the Union Parish Sheriff's Office in Farmerville told ESPN in a phone interview Thursday that Holly turned himself in around noon and is being held on $512,000 bond. Holly's arrest Thursday is one of three arrests tied to a Feb. 9 shooting, per Gates, in which two people were shot. Gates told ESPN that both of the shooting victims are expected to live. Holly is also facing charges of aggravated criminal damage to property and illegal use of a weapon, Gates told ESPN. Holly has been suspended indefinitely from all LSU football team activities. LSU said in a statement that it was "aware that a student-athlete has been arrested in relation to a shooting in Union Parish." A lawyer for Holly told The Advocate in Baton Rouge that his client plans to plead not guilty to all three charges. "Mr. Holly emphatically denies all charges, and we look forward to having our day in court," attorney Kelvin Rodgers said. Holly is a freshman who ran for 110 yards on 11 carries last season, including one touchdown against Army. He entered LSU as one of the most accomplished backs in Louisiana high school football, as he set the state's all-time rushing record with 10,523 yards. He scored 160 touchdowns in his high school career at Union Parish High School. Holly was ESPN's No. 10-ranked running back and No. 172 overall player in the Class of 2023. McKinley joins the Tigers after a dominant prep career, one that saw him lead Acadiana to the Louisiana Division I Select State Championship Game in 2023. A consensus five-star prospect, McKinley earned the state’s top rating and has been listed as high as No. 13 overall nationally and No. 3 at his position. A first-team 5A All-State selection as a senior, McKinley recorded 71 tackles, 15 quarterback hurries, and 11 tackles for loss for the 11-3 Rams. He had 86 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and 10 sacks in 2022. “Adding Dominick to this class really tops it off for us,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said. “He’s the top player in the state of Louisiana and we are excited about him joining our program.” The addition of McKinley to LSU’s class means the Tigers signed eight of the top 10 players and 12 of the top 15 players in the Class of 2024 in the state of Louisiana. LSU signed 27 players (26 high school, 1 junior college transfer) during the early signing period in December. Kelly also announced that the program added six players from the transfer portal. The six transfer additions to the team includes three players on both sides of the ball. Offensive transfers are wide receiver Zavion Thomas (Mississippi State), wide receiver CJ Daniels (Liberty) and quarterback AJ Swann (Vanderbilt). On the defensive side, the Tigers added defensive back Austin Ausberry (Auburn), cornerback Jyaire Brown (Ohio State) and safety Jardin Gilbert (Texas A&M). “It’s very strategic when looking at the (transfer) portal,” Kelly said. “We looked at it in terms of fit and need, but fit first. We are going to develop and build this program with high school players and then be very strategic with the portal. “It’s no coincidence that four of the six players are from the state of Louisiana. Two are from Baton Rouge and U-High and two are from New Orleans.” Thomas, who prepped at John Ehret High School in New Orleans caught 40 passes for 503 yards and a touchdown last year. He’s also a return specialist who returned both a punt and kickoff for touchdowns at Mississippi State. He earned Freshman All-America honors as a return specialist in 2022. Daniels caught 55 passes for 1,067 yards and 10 touchdowns for a Liberty team that won Conference USA and went 13-1 overall, losing only to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. He has seven career 100-yard games and has 106 receptions for 1,954 yards and 21 touchdowns during his college career. Swann started 12 games in two years at Vanderbilt, throwing for 2,731 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2023. “We needed to add some offense back into an offense that lost some prolific weapons and we do that with these three,” Kelly said. “Replacing some offense was very important strategically as we continue to develop and bring along young players in our program.” Defensively, Gilbert brings 25 games of SEC experience, including 12 starts, to the Tiger secondary. A product of University High School, Gilbert had 61 tackles and two interceptions as a sophomore in 2022. He played in only two games in 2023, missing most of the season with a shoulder injury. Brown, who played two years of high school football at Warren Easton in New Orleans, appeared in 14 games, including one start, in two seasons at Ohio State. Ausberry, also a product of University High School, spent two years at Auburn, appearing in seven games. “We were looking for someone with experience who played off the hash and we got that in Jardin Gilbert,” Kelly said. “Jyaire is an experienced player from Ohio State and Austin is an outstanding athlete. “I’m excited about the closing of this signing day with Dominick McKinley joining our program and with the additions we made in the portal.” LSU Football – February Signee Bio/Transfer Portal Bios Dominick McKinley Defensive Tackle 6-5 * 273 * Fr.-HS Lafayette, La. Kelly also announced that Slade Nagle is joining the LSU coaching staff and will handle special teams and coach the tight ends. “Joe did an outstanding job developing Jayden Daniels over the past two years into a Heisman Trophy winner,” Kelly said. “His experience here and at Louisiana Tech makes him a valuable recruiter who is well connected in the state. Joe is ready to work alongside a talented offensive staff and continue to operate an elite offensive system.” Kelly said Hankton will take on the day-to-day implementation and organization of the offense while still serving in his capacity as wide receiver coach. “Cortez’s development of Malik and Brian into likely first round NFL Draft picks goes to his expertise of coaching wide receivers,” Kelly said. “Cortez continues to be a tremendous asset for us in recruiting. I’m excited about the leadership and the direction of the LSU offense heading into the 2024 season.” Sloan and Hankton were both instrumental in LSU’s offensive explosion in 2023 as the Tigers led the nation in scoring offense (45.5), total offense (543.5) and pass efficiency. The Tigers scored 40 or more points nine times and LSU had nine games in which they reached 500 yards of offense with a season-high of 701 in the win over Florida. LSU was the only FBS team to rank in the Top 10 in both rushing and passing offense, averaging 338.9 yards (No. 3) through the air and 204.5 yards (No. 10) on the ground. They served as co-offensive coordinators for LSU’s ReliaQuest Bowl win over Wisconsin. In that game with first-time starter Garrett Nussmeier at quarterback, the Tigers racked up 492 total yards, including 395 through the air, in the 35-31 victory. Sloan and Hankton are both in their third year at LSU as they were among the first hires for Kelly when he took over the program in December of 2021. As the quarterback coach for the past two years, Sloan’s impact on Jayden Daniels’ development resulted in him winning the 2023 Heisman Trophy. Daniels was also named the winner of the Davey O’Brien and Manning Awards as well as being the AP, Walter Camp and Sporting News National Player of the Year. Daniels’ play was nearly flawless as a senior, leading the nation in total offense (412.2), pass efficiency (208.0), points responsible for per game (25.2), yards per rush (8.4), and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,134). Daniels became one of only five players in SEC history to account for 50 touchdowns in a season and he set the all-time FBS mark for pass efficiency, completing 236-of-327 passes for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Hankton’s wide receiver group produced college football’s top tandem in 2023 as Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas combined to catch 157 passes for 2,746 yards and 31 touchdowns. Nabers, a unanimous consensus All-America, led the nation in receiving yards per game (120.7), while Thomas, a third-team All-America led the country in receiving TDs with 17. Nabers capped his LSU career as the school’s all-time leader in both receptions (189) and receiving yards (3,004). He joined Josh Reed as the only players in program history with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. LSU’s other top receivers in 2023 included Kyren Lacy and Chris Hilton. Lacy caught 30 passes for 558 yards and seven touchdowns, while Hilton had 13 receptions for 225 yards and a pair of TDs. Nagle joins the Tigers after eight seasons where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Green Wave in 2023. Nagle coached the Tulane tight ends the first seven years he was with the Green Wave. He capped his time with Tulane as the interim head coach for the Green Wave’s 2023 bowl game against Virginia Tech. Nagle, a native of Lake Charles and a graduate of McNeese, previously served on the LSU coaching staff in 2009 when he worked with the special teams. Nagle’s dad, John Nagle, was a three-year letterwinner for the Tigers from 1969-71. “Slade brings a winning and an experienced collegiate resume to our staff,” Kelly said. “Whether calling plays or coaching tight ends, quarterbacks or special teams, Slade has excelled at all levels. A native of Louisiana, he has a great recruiting knowledge of the state and is known for developing his position group. We are excited about Slade becoming a member of the Tiger Staff.” In 2023, Tulane reached the championship game of the American Athletic Conference and posted an 11-3 mark. The Green Wave won the AAC title in 2022 and then went on to beat Southern Cal in the Cotton Bowl, 46-45, as they tied the school-record for wins in a season with 12. Nagle has had other coaching stops at McNeese (2012-15), Central Arkansas (2011), Texas State (2010), Northwestern State (2006-09) and Dodge City Community College (2004-05). The Tigers have also added another weapon to the offense, signing CJ Daniels out of the transfer portal. Daniels, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, is a dynamic talent who has been a key weapon for Liberty. In 2023 he lead the Liberty Flames with 55 catches for 1,067 yard and 10 touchdowns while earning All-Conference honors. Weil BO DAVIS RETURNS TO LSU AS DEFENSIVE LINE COACHBy: Michael Bonnette BATON ROUGE, LA - BATON ROUGE – Bo Davis, a former All-SEC nose guard who is considered one of the top defensive line coaches in college football, is returning to LSU and will serve as defensive line coach for the Tigers, head coach Brian Kelly announced on Wednesday. Davis joins the LSU staff after spending the past three seasons at Texas where he helped the Longhorns reach the College Football Playoffs in 2023 with one of the nation’s top defenses. Davis spent six years with the Longhorns, first as defensive tackles coach from 2011-13 and then as defensive line coach from 2021-23. Davis played for the Tigers in the early 1990s, served as a graduate assistant with the football program from 1995-97 and was a member of the strength and conditioning staff when LSU won the 2003 national championship. Davis returns to LSU with a history of developing some of the top defensive linemen in college football. In 12 years of coaching the defensive line in college football, Davis has produced 17 all-conference selections and seven all-Americans. He’s coached players who have won the Outland Trophy, the Defensive Player of the Year in the Big 12 and Conference USA, along with the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year. He’s also had finalists for the Outland, Nagurski and Bednarik Awards. “As a defensive line coach Bo brings a wealth of proven success at both the professional and collegiate level throughout his distinguished career,” Kelly said. “Additionally, coach Davis is an outstanding recruiter and developer of the players in his charge. I am excited to welcome back to LSU coach Bo Davis.” Davis has been part of three national championships during his collegiate career, winning the 2003 title at LSU along with championships at Alabama in 2009 and 2015 as the defensive line coach for the Crimson Tide. Davis’ 2023 Texas defensive line featured T’Vondre Sweat, a consensus all-American and the recipient of the Outland Trophy as the nation ‘s top interior lineman, along with Byron Murphy, who earned Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year. In 2023, the Texas defense allowed only 82.4 yards rushing a contest and held opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing in eight games. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Davis coached in the NFL for five years most recently as the defensive line coach for the Detroit Lions from 2018-20. Davis also spent the 2006 season with the Miami Dolphins as assistant defensive line coach and the 2016 as a defensive assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2017 as the defensive line coach at UTSA, Marcus Davenport earned Conference USA Player of the Year honors and went on to become a first-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints. Davis served two stints at Alabama, coaching the defensive line from 2007-10 and then again in 2014-15. In his first stop with the Crimson Tide, Davis developed nose guard Terrence Cody into a two-time consensus all-American, and a finalist for the Lombardi, Nagurski and Bednarik Awards. During his second stretch with the Crimson Tide, Alabama’s defense led the nation in rushing in 2015, allowing only 75.7 yards per game. Davis’ 2015 defensive line featured first-team all-American A’Shawn Robinson, who was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, along with Jonathan Allen, a first round 2017 first-round NFL Draft pick. Davis first joined the Texas staff in 2011, coaching defensive tackles for Mack Brown for three years before returning to Alabama in 2014. Davis played nose guard for LSU from 1990-92, earning All-SEC honors as a senior. A native of Magee, Miss., Davis graduated from LSU in 1993 and served as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning program from 1995-97. After four years coaching at North Shore High School in Galena Park, Texas, Davis returned to LSU as assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2002-05. LSU went 41-11 during that span. Davis and his wife, Omeika, have two sons, Beau and Jackson, and a daughter, Juliana. Davis’ hiring is contingent on a satisfactory background check and approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors. LSU CLAIMS SEVERAL NCAA STATISTICAL TITLES FOLLOWING 2023 SEASONBy: Michael Bonnette BATON ROUGE – For the second time in five years, LSU has claimed the NCAA statistical titles for scoring offense and total offense as the Tigers led the nation in both categories. The Tigers, winners of seven of their final eight games, posted a 10-3 overall mark capped with a 35-31 win over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl. LSU ranked first among all FBS teams in scoring with 45.5 points per game and the Tigers were No. 1 in total offense with a 543.5 average. LSU’s 45.5 points and 543.5 total yards per game rank No. 2 in school history, trailing only the 2019 team who averaged 48.4 points and 568.4 yards a contest. In addition, LSU’s total offense average ranks No. 3 in SEC history, trailing only the 2019 Tigers and the 2012 Texas A&M team that averaged 558.5 yards a game.
