Da Boot Sports 9/17/2022 By: Corey Perrillioux BATON ROUGE, LA - The LSU Fighting Tigers defeated Mississippi State and their "Air Raid" offense on Saturday night in Death Valley in front of 98,520 jubilant Tiger fans. The Tigers continue to show steady improvement as they provided the Tiger faithful with a welcomed SEC victory and a reason to build on their optimism. What has been widely accepted as a rebuilding period for LSU football, the Tigers seem to be putting together a competitive football team as they are now 2-1 overall, 1-0 in SEC play. The LSU offensive line started the contest shaky with blown blocking assignments and false start penalties. But as the game went on they began to gel and provided better protection for Jayden Daniels while opening running lanes for the LSU running backs. Jayden Daniels certainly proved why he was the best choice to lead the LSU offense with his ability to run and pass. He finished the night rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown while passing for 210 yards with a touchdown pass to Jaray Jenkins. The Tigers rushed for a total of 206 yards with three rushing touchdowns. Armoni Goodwin had 75 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. John Emery Jr. added 32 tough yards on 11 carries, while Josh Williams had one carry on the night for a physical seven yard touchdown run. Malik Nabers lead the Tigers in receiving with 76 yards on six catches. Kayshon Boutte finished with three grabs for 31 yards and Jaray Jenkins caught three passes for 23 yards and a score. LSU receivers combined for 210 yards and one touchdown. LSU's defense was up to the challenge, grounding the high flying offense of Mississippi State. Bulldog quarterback Will Rogers finished 24-42 for 214 yards and one touchdown. The Tigers held Mississippi State to only 75 yards rushing in the game. Jay Ward lead the team in tackles finishing with 11 along with an interception. Micah Baskerville finished with eight tackles, while freshman Harold Perkins had five tackles with 1.5 sacks. The LSU offense started the game slowly as they showed no signs of life until scoring late in the second quarter. Trailing 13-0, the Tigers would drive 75 yards in seven plays culminating with Jayden Daniels finding Jaray Jenkins for an eight yard touchdown as the Bulldogs held a 13-7 lead into the halftime break. The third quarter was all about defense. Both LSU and State could only manage a field goal each as the Bulldogs would lead 16-10 heading into the fourth quarter. LSU dominated the final period on both sides of the ball. The Tiger defense turned up the heat as they constantly harassed Will Rogers causing the 'Air Raid Attack' to sputter for the remainder of the contest, while LSU's offense exploded for 21 unanswered points. The Tigers took their first lead of the game with 14:11 left on the clock when Jayden Daniels scrambled into the end zone from three yards out putting LSU up 17-16 with Damian Ramos' PAT. LSU then marched 85 yards on 14 plays on their next possession with Josh Williams finishing the drive with a seven yard touchdown run. 24-16, Tigers with 6:53 left in the game. After the Bulldogs second consecutive three and out, the Tigers put an exclamation point on the victory when Armoni Goodwin broke a 47 yard touchdown run for the final score of the contest. With the impressive win, the Tigers are now 2-1, (1-0) and will face New Mexico next Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
