Da Boot Sports 9/9/2023 By: Jason Watson Jr. BATON ROUGE, LA- Brian Kelly and LSU had a bounce-back performance in their home opener versus in-state opponent Grambling State. They balled out in front of a crowd of 97,735, and aside from a shaky defensive first quarter, the Tigers dominated in every facet of the game while showing the true potential of this team. In a first quarter that ended much closer than most fans expected, the Tigers could not stop an aggressive attack from the Grambling State offense. LSU capped off a 77-yard opening drive with a 26-yard dime to Brian Thomas Jr. for a touchdown. A strong start from the Tigers was answered right back by Grambling as they went downfield at will, scoring a TD on an 83-yard drive. Another LSU TD and a field goal from Grambling left the scoreboard at 14-10 at the end of the first. Missed tackles, poor secondary coverage, and a lackadaisical defensive effort against a weaker competitor plagued the Tiger defense early on. Although that would be all the scoring Grambling could muster for the rest of the game. Grambling State accumulated 259 first-half yards on offense and scored twice in their three red zone trips. They finished the game with 320 yards, a drop-off after a night-and-day defensive performance from LSU. The Tigers also forced two takeaways in the second half. Grambling’s runs continued to stifle the Tigers, but the passing attack was minimal at best. The LSU offense was nearly perfect on the night as they scored touchdowns on 10/11 of their drives. The lone series that did not end in a score happened late in the game as LSU attempted to run the clock down but failed to reach the marker on a 4th & 5 deep in Grambling territory. Jayden Daniels propelled LSU to a 42-10 lead at halftime. His night would end there, finishing 18/24, throwing for 269 yards, and tossing 5 TDs to 4 different receivers. Daniels joined Joe Burrow as the only quarterbacks in school history to throw five touchdown passes in a half. The running back room stood out most of the game. A trio of Logan Diggs, Kaleb Jackson, and Josh Williams all finished the game averaging over five yards per carry. Noah Cain even got into the action late, finding paydirt and ripping off a 15-yard run. Strong running all night was impressive from the Tigers and will be a topic of conversation as we trek towards SEC play. Harold Perkins attacked the game early after laying the lumber on a Grambling receiver in open space. He also had a pass breakup in the first half. Perkins was a big name that did not make much of an impact in the loss to Florida State, so it was good to see him getting around on the field in this one. Defensively, there were not many impactful plays throughout the contest, but Maason Smith’s return provided good reps after an injury kept him out of last season. Coach Kelly spoke post-game and preached that LSU “played the right way.” Execution and clean football were on display versus Grambling State, with the Tigers only committing two penalties the entire game. No turnovers for LSU and efficient, high-energy drives were the keys to playing winning football for the Bayou Bengals. LSU opens conference play next week as they travel to Starkville and take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The game will be broadcast nationally on September 16 on ESPN at 11 a.m. CST.
