7/29/2021 By: Terrill J. Weil Da Boot Sports! The SEC will now become a 16 team super conference. On Thursday SEC leaders voted unanimously to extend an invitation to Texas and Oklahoma to join the conference, effective July 1, 2025. “Today’s unanimous vote is both a testament to the SEC’s longstanding spirit of unity and mutual cooperation, as well as a recognition of the outstanding legacies of academic and athletic excellence established by the Universities of Oklahoma and Texas,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. “I greatly appreciate the collective efforts of our presidents and chancellors in considering and acting upon each school’s membership interest.” It's very unlikely either school will be able to join the SEC before 2025 without huge consequences. Unless the Big 12 and both schools can reach some sort of an agreement, it would cost Oklahoma and Texas both tens of millions of dollars in penalties to leave earlier. The loss of their two powerhouse universities could eventually mean the end of the Big 12.

I believe the Big 12 was the Big 8 before it was the Big 12. Nothing wrong with the Big 8.
