Da Boot Sports 12/9/2023 By David Penn New York, NY - That Kid Jayden Daniels became the 86th player to hoist the Heisman Trophy at the 87th presentation, joining Billy Cannon and Joe Burrow as the previous LSU Heisman winners. Once upon a time, that kid Jayden announced that he was entering the transfer portal. In response to his announcement, Daniels’ Arizona State teammates responded by destroying his locker. Daniels would commit to new LSU head coach Brian Kelly and his journey toward immortality would begin. In Daniels’ first season under center for the LSU Tigers, under the guidance of Kelly and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, Daniels would guide the LSU offense to a 10 win season, the SEC west title, and an appearance in the SEC Championship game. Daniels completed 68.6% of his passes for 2,913 yards, 7.5 yards per completion, 17 TDs, and only 3 INTs. Daniels also added 885 yards rushing, 4.8 yards per carry, and 11 TDs. Daniels though was often criticized for being a run first pass second QB in his first year in purple and gold. Improvement was Daniels’ focus in the off-season, improvement reading defenses, going through progressions, trusting his skill positions, and when to scramble. Mission accomplished. In his Hesiman campaign Daniels completed 72.2% of his passes for 3,812 yards, 11.7 yards per completion, 40 TDs, 4 INTs. He would rush for 1,134 yards at 8.4 yards per carry, and score 10 TDs. More impressively, he threw for 900 more yards in his second year while completing 61 less passes, he rushed for 249 more yards on 51 less attempts. Daniels was the most explosive player of the 2023 football season, accounting for nearly 100 plays of 20 yards or more. Daniels had the highest completion percentage in the nation on passes over 20 yards at 67%, Daniels threw no interceptions when the play was more than 20 yards down field, and threw 22 TDs on plays over 20 yards, he was ranked first in all 3 of those categories. After the ceremony, Coach Kelly said, “This was the most exciting player in college football, I’m so excited and happy for him that he was able to achieve a dream of his and be the Heisman Trophy winner, an exciting night for Jaden Daniels and LSU.” The most notable part of Daniels’ acceptance speech was when he said. “Being a college and winning this award has been a dream come true, I want to dedicate this award to every boy and girl who has a dream, with faith and hard work, you never know what’s possible.” Many will argue that perhaps a player on a different team was more deserving because LSU finished the season 9-3, not in the playoff hunt, not a division or conference champion, but the voters agreed that the Heisman isn’t about being the best player on the best team, it is about being the best player in the country. To congratulate Daniels on the accomplishment were two other QBs that won the award with multiple losses, Robert Griffin III and Tim Tebow were present on stage to embrace the newest member of the Heisman fold.
